    My wife and I own a 2018 Kia Niro SX Touring, which is their absolute Top of The Line version. I have kept ALL gasoline receipts in a spreadsheet so I KNOW exactly what this vehicle is capable of delivering. AND the answer is 52.797 Imperial Miles Per Gallon OR 5.374 Litres Per 100 Kilometers, over 2.25 years and 30,784 kilometers (19,240 miles). This "Top Spec" Niro is their LEAST efficient version due to it's extra weight and higher rolling resistance (wider) 18" tires. The vehicle is in Canada where it can get pretty cold and that average is for EVERYTHING, ie City/Highway and Summer/Winter (with snow tires). It obviously does better than that average in summer and worse in winter. Overall, I couldn't be happier! The ONLY issue we have had with the Niro is the Rear Disc Brakes which are now wearing/corroding out. It doesn't matter that the brakes are rarely used, due to regenerative braking. The SALT laden roads we experience each winter cause this same issue with EVERY vehicle in our climate. Front brakes last O.K. because those wheels are constantly driving out of the salt spray. But that same spray from the front wheels drifts back under the vehicle and lands on the rear brakes where it works it's EVIL magic. This issue affects cars with 4 wheel disc brakes to a far greater extent than cars with rear drum brakes, which are enclosed.
    We are currently on the hunt for another vehicle to replace an aging minivan. Since we now live in an apartment with secured underground parking and pretty tight parking spaces, two features that our Niro has have become EXTREMELY Important to us. Those being "Power Folding Exterior Mirrors" and "Front & Rear Parking Sensors" with audible and visual warnings. I've searched and searched and searched and have found NO OTHER vehicle, even close to Niro's price range which can be so equipped, let alone all the other impressive technology which the Niro SX Touring employs. This is a vehicle with very easy Ingress/Egress and is comfortable both around town and on highway trips. We've driven to my wife's brothers home almost 600 kilometers away with only a single stop for lunch. No fatigue or pains, which is highly unusual for me as I've had chronic back issues since I was a teenager, ie for over 50 years.
    Bottom line: We are ordering a 2021 Niro SX Touring PLUG-IN Hybrid to replace our minivan. The Plug-In version is a "No Brainer" for us since the price is virtually identical after the rebate for PHEV's. There is NO such rebate for simple Hybrids in Canada.

      Thank you for this detailed review. My wife has been on the fence but I've been convinced that this is the way to go. This review sold it to her. :) Heading to the Kia dealership this weekend.

    I had one as a courtesy car two years ago, and said at the time it was the nicest car I had ever driven. I wish had I had bought one then, but didn't want to part with the money. Just pressed the button, and picked mine up recently. Just got 60.4 mpg on a 220 mile round trip. Put it in sport mode mode and floor it and it is surprisingly quick. In my opinion it is the car Kia got just right

    We have a 19 top of the line touring hev in Canada two years in . We absolutely love this car . We swapped out the 18 inch wheels last year and put on 16 inch Yokohama tires on costco alloys . It now is considerably smoother on our rough Winnipeg roads . Over here in North America we usually do the 0 to 60 mph run . I got 9.8 seconds . If you turn off traction control and use sport mode it scoots pretty good with that electric torque mixed in . Around town or on the highway it gets great mileage . Best car that I've ever owned, and really solidly built.

    Excellent review. Enjoyed every second of it. I am a driving instructor looking for my next vehicle. Full Electric is too costly and Tom Kent makes this sound like a great car covering all of the information that I wanted to hear. Tom you're in a class of your own. Many thanks. P.S. I am going to test drive this Kia Niro this morning on your review and expect to buy this car. And Kia it sound like you've got a high quality.

    Great review, thanks for the comprehensive look at this car, I’m seriously thinking of this model.. I want a HEV as where I live a PHEV is impractical... currently in a lovely BMW X1 but I really like the look of the car and it seems build quality is good and that the car is a nice place to spend time driving about in!

    I own a 2022 KIA Niro LXS love it however not liking the annoying back up alarm that you can’t turn off. You would think that there would be a option in the console settings on the dash where you can turn off and on specific settings and warnings. I realize it’s for safety but pretty annoying for my neighbors to be woken up at 4AM as I’m backing out of my garage for work.

    • @aeon7986
      @aeon7986 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s a video available showing how to disable it. Need to take off the front bumper which looks pretty straight forward, Then unplug the annoying bastard. I want to do the same with mine.

    • @clcbc97
      @clcbc97 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aeon7986 yeah I saw that. It looks like a lot of work and several reasons why I won’t go through the trouble. If for some reason I damage my bumper or some other part of the car disabling it I take the risk of voiding my warranty. And that it’s federally regulated that all hybrid vehicles have to be equipped with it. Meaning if I disable something that is federally regulated I’m afraid I have broke the law by removing it and I take the chance of a fine or repossession of my vehicle. I was more concerned about it because I leave really early in the morning for work long before most of my neighbors and I was worried about a noise complaint or that I may be violating the local noise ordnance but being that my vehicle is federally regulated to have a backup alarm I don’t think there is much that law enforcement could do. So I just stopped worrying about it. Besides Garbage trucks as well as other commercial vehicles have to have have them as well and many of them are working at early hours as well as emergency vehicles who have to have lights and sirens on anytime they are responding to an emergency or transporting a patient. It’s only beeping for a few seconds that I’m backing out of the driveway. Then it stops.

    Here is what I think about,back in the 80's There were gas engine cars that got 60-70 miles per gallon.The Honda CRX was rated at 52 mpg but actually achieved 60 and up to 70.Back then it was common to get more mpg than what was rated but the environmental investing politicians changed the rules where car companies changed the way they measure mpg and they now average about 80% of what they claim. The gadgets put on all cars to make less pollution come out the pipe caused the cost to go up and the mileage to go way down.Changing the method of measuring mpg masked just how much the environmental gadgets lowered the mpg.We quickly went from 60mpg to less than 30.They then had to make cars even smaller just to reach 30+ miles per gallon.Of course the environmental impact of the manufacture of all the gadgets to have less pollution coming out the pipe per gallon of gas was never considered.Add to that that often you now needed two gallons of gas to go the same distance as one gallon would take you was also never considered.I am sure they thought of that but if anyone else thought of that and realized to be fair they should check the pollution out the pipe of two gallons of gas vs only one and then add in the pollution from all the gadgets attached just to lower out the pipe emissions.If they did an honest and fair comparison I think we very well may have a net effect of higher pollution from the lower emissions cars we were all forced to buy in the name of environmental correctness.
    And then you get to the electric and hybrid cars.The damage to our planet strip mining and getting rid of dead batteries or cars totalled in accidents and gone to junk yards spewing battery chemicals into our drinking water.Acres and acres of land strip mined,children used as slaves in toxic mining operations so that environmental politicians can sell and make a lot of money selling things that in the long run create more pollution than they save is despicable. Propaganda can fool people into spending more money than ever before by thinking they are helping the planet but if they visited all the places that make many of these new technology plants or waste dumps they may find all they are doing is being brain washed by propaganda with the end result of accelerating the rate of destruction of our planet and our land.Solar cells do not last too long and are trashed.They have wiped out thousands and thousands of acres of oxygen giving forest in the name of windmills and solar panels only to decide to abandon them into wastelands of decaying huge wind turbines and solar panel farms that their only profit was in having the tax payers pay for it all. There is only one way I see the environment improving and not making things worse. Electricity must be made from nuclear energy. With all we have done we should be able to create nuclear energy that has 100% safety. Small nuclear cells might be manufactured to put in your vehicle but safety should be paramount.I know it can be done but the politicians that make billions forcing us to buy fake environmentally friendly products would not want a long lasting product that could last for the life of your vehicle and true clean energy is also something that will not make them a fortune with the newest and latest supposedly environmentally friendly and green as they say product.They don't want you to think about all the toxic chemicals spread everywhere from the manufacture of car batteries or think about just how much electricity would be needed if everyone has an electric car or how long the waits to power up .Think how many gas stations we have and how at times there can be a waiting line.With electric we would need more land torn down to build a lot more electric power station than gas stations or the lines would go on for miles and we would need bigger and bigger electric power plants to charge all those vehicles .Our country would become more susceptible to attacks and how will all these power plants be fueled,biofuels stripping our forests as many environmental politicians have supported and authorized.People are so easily influenced to get screwed over and support further destruction of our planet by being fooled into thinking they are helping.It truly is a shame.The 80's are where things were actually less environmentally being destroyed

      Those cars were death traps by today's standards . I'm 65 so I've been there. The Niro gets far better city mileage and is built like a tank compared to those . I drove Mazda 323 for years and this Niro crushes that car in every aspect except for the fun of zipping through the gears of the five speed standard. The way people drive nowadays you're a hell of a lot safer in a Niro.
