    The TH-cam algorithm sucks. I’m a drummer, who also builds drums, but your channel hasn’t been put in my feed until now. So I subscribed, and I hope you can post some more content.

    Hey man, came across your video here on the final day of my snare drum build. 13 by 6.5 deep. I'm excited to see how it turns out! I see that this is a few years ago but if you are interested or anyone else is interested I have several more shells worth of 13 diameter pvc.

    Nice video! About 20 years ago, there was a company that made and sold PVC drums. They were very inexpensive (the shells were a bit thinner than this one), but Modern Drummer tested them and gave them an excellent review.

    Remo sells vintage-sized (slightly larger) heads. Apparently, back in the day shells *were* true to size.

  • @michaelwilson6806
    @michaelwilson6806 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Anything mounted to any shell will dampen the shell. You should try a free floating shell build. My bet is it will be significantly better. Try a deeper shell like 6.5 or 8 and you will get a deeper sound with an excellent crack and rim shots.

    As a musician and someone who worked in water and wastewater for over 20 years Watch for construction projects with pipe often the smaller pieces that are trimmed off to make a pipe run are just thrown away and you maybe able to acquire some PVC pieces that are being scrapped and trashed for little to nothing if you ask.

    I see you’ve got your sticks laying on the floor next to your hi hat while playing that gig. I highly recommend a Vic Firth barreled stick holder that clamps on to your hi hat stand. You can fit 3 sets of sticks in that bad boy and is jointed so you can position your sticks at a perfect angle and height for you.

  • @ephysdad
    @ephysdad 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If you run it through a table saw and took out just the width of a saw kerf, you could hermetically seal the joint and close it with a tie down. It would reduce the diameter and once sanded and finished, you likely would barely see the joint at all.

    Many years ago my dad worked for a compan that made fiberglass tanks for soft water systems and some of the tanks were thicker on one side and they couldn’t use those tanks so he brought them home and I made some tomtoms out of them plus lots of itching on my arms. They didn’t sound to bad.

    • @petegreendrummer
      @petegreendrummer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Back in the 70's many of the big drum companies had fiberglass kits in their line up! In fact, the Fibes drum company took it's name from the word fiberglass! The North drums (the ones that look like upside-down tubas) are also made of fiberglass, and Pearl just re-introduced a line that incorporates a layer of fiberglass in the plies of the shell!

    I want to build a kit with PVC that is thinner, wrap it with a super nice think walnut shell and stain it. I think I can do the whole 4 toms, 1 snare and kick drum for maybe 450$ with hardware. The idea would be to put me electric kit inside, basically make it look super nice and compact (smaller drums 18" kick and toms not as deep as standard). The sound will be dampened but I wonder if I can get a really nice DW look for a 10th the cost.

    Great video. One of the things I like about the acrylic style drums is that they maintain there acoustics throughout time. A wood drum sounds great, but how about after years of humid concerts, basements, and or garages. Their density changes over time. Maybe I'm wrong. By the way...I play wood drums.

    • @michaelwilson6806
      @michaelwilson6806 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wood breaths and the sound changes with temperature and humidity. But so do the heads thats why our kits need to be constantly retuned. Drum heads need to break in so to speak. I hate the couple of days after i change a head and play on it as it tends to change in pitch until it seats on the bearing edge and stretches. Guitars are the same way. They hate to cold. My guys will always let their gear warm up after being in a cold area so that they won't have to constantly retune while playing.

      @@sallysez initially that's kind of what I was thinking too, but it seems like because it's an inconvenience to get ahold of PVC, especially in small increments, and it being relatively expensive if you get it precut, that a majority of drum builders don't really like that. I wondered if PVC was strong enough to deal with lug tension. I have heard octabans made from 6" OD PVC and they sound cool. Just use those obnoxious, heavy and huge DW style (Camco) turret lugs. Those things dampen any shell. Might need an HD dry for that one.

  • @DeadtreeFilms1
    @DeadtreeFilms1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Maybe the Remo Classic Fit or Aquarian Modern Vintage heads may work well for this type of drum, as they are designed to fit the vintage over sized shells. I'd love to know if it would work to solve the issue, as I am looking into making one of these as well.

    the reason that size PVC is so expensive is because it is schedule 80 PVC...PVC comes in to "thicknesses"...schedule 40, which is what you see at home depot, and schedule 80 which is used in pressure applications...if all you're going to do is drain something or pipe up your spa, schedule 40 is all you need...for any pressure industrial or plant use, schedule 80 is going to be required...and you're right--it is incredibly expensive....if you're working with schedule 80, you NEVER throw any except the smallest scraps away...and, no, do not expect anyone EVER to give you an "extra" piece...

      @petegreendrummer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@seeteasea5497 Cool man! Good luck with it! I would recommend you use double-sided snare lugs (as opposed to the single sided style lugs I used) because in the months since I finished building mine, I've noticed that the PVC isn't strong enough to withstand the high tension, and so, my lugs have moved, and the mounting holes are now oval shaped and a bit cracked... I think I would've been better off using double sided tube lugs or something.

    • @petegreendrummer
      @petegreendrummer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, it's actually not very responsive... It's also not very dynamic, and quite difficult to achieve a tight, high pitch. However, it's amazing at medium-low tuning, for a super fat 70's/80's backbeat sound!

    I had an old 1950s Gretsch kit with a real thick wrap. The heads were like this. Tight. First time I detuned it I took the hoops off. It was still in tune. Yep. You can tune a tight head up. But if you decide you've tuned too high.... well I had to punch the shell to pop the head off. Not the easiest of drums I ever had to tune.

    As for PVC for a shell, couplings might be the cheaper way to go versus chasing pipe. A 14" coupling should have about a 15" outer diameter; a 12" coupling would be about 13" (13" PVC pipe does not exist...after 6" they only make even sizes, and they don't make 22", just 20" and 24"). However, they are NOT cheap.

    I like that you didnt fully wrap the PVC.... and those lugs look a lot like my Mapex V Series... my lugs are a single screw lug but at the top there's this rounded piece that doesnt go fully through the drum. I was wondering is it all snare lugs dont have rubber gaskets around their lugs or is there a reason for not having them? Aside from lack of material. Currently I'm rebuilding a mapex v series kit 4 rack toms and 1 floor tom. (I'm not messing with the snare) I have wood filler to put down on the bass drum and various other Tom's and some light sanding. I saw what looked like a boom arm with a towel wrapped around it. Or is that something else? I need a good space to do some sanding (both inside and outside the shells.) I like the snare sound, I also like your snare tie offs. I think that's pretty clever. Great job with the lugs and lining everything up. You made it look easy lol. Im just wondering how much of a difference the rubber gaskets on the hardware would make? If any at all? Aside from not putting little marks on the PVC.

      The hats are 16" Sabian HHX Groove hats I custom ordered. The top is 950 grams, and the bottom is 1150 grams. The crashes are both HHX X-plosion, 18 and 19 inches. And the ride is a 22" Zildjian K dark medium.

    You should invest in a zoom q2.

    I think it sounds great. I'll take it if you don't want it.
