  • How could Jack Ma go from being one of China's most admired businessmen to one of it's most disliked - at least among China's young, white collar workers? His views on the work ethics young Chinese should embrace, might offer you a clue!
In this podcast, Eileen and Xiao Feng discuss China's work culture, especially with focus on the 996 phenomenon.
This is a great listening practice audio / video podcast for Chinese intermediates. The clear smartphone friendly subtitles also makes it easier for elementary Chinese students to follow this intermediate, non-scripted conversation.

You have a real talent for interviewing, Eileen, and a natural charisma. I've written this before, but you and your partner should market this channel as one that gives information and insight into modern China, as well as being a language learning channel. I have had people tell me they skipped over this channel when looking for information about China, because they thought it was 'just' a language learning channel.

I really think this is far beyond so called "Intermediate Chinese". I think in this video (and all other recent videos), conversations are all natural (which is for me, the highest level for language learners) in both expressions and speaking speed, but they are still understandable and interesting for learners.
There are many channels out there in TH-cam teaching Chinese, but nearly all of them targets for the beginner level, which is meaningless for somewhat advanced learners like me. There are few channels that target advanced learner like this channel. I know that targeting advanced learners is much harder and also bad in term of profit, but I somewhat believe that your channel is the only channel I know so far, have some interesting things for advanced learner at the moment. In the past, there is CSLPOD, but they have stopped updating new content their site a long time ago.

@@josephhill2868 For me, the HSK 6 marks the beginning of so-called Chinese advanced level. Vocabulary of HSK 6 should be around 5000. Han charaters, for me, don't matter.
If a video contains many words that are not in the 5000 words of HSK6, and the speaking speed is more natural than the listening test of HSK6, I consider that video "advanced level".

*TOO FAST?* Control the video's playback speed *by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time* on *desktop computers and laptops* OR *25%* at a time on *smartphone.*
Access the playback speed controls as follows:
*Desktop Computers and Laptops* : open the video, then go to the lower right of the video's screen and click on the settings icon (it looks like a GEAR). On the upper right of the options window that comes up, you will see the link "custom". Click on the "custom" link to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time.
*Smartphones* : open the video and go to the upper right of the video's screen. You will see 3 dots. Click on them and you will see the link to open the "playback speed" controls. Click on this link and you will be able to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 25% at a time. Note that viewing the video on desktop computer/laptops gives you greater control over the playback speed (5% vs 25% on smartphones).

Eileen&晓峰老师们,I've been listening more and more to your interesting podcast-video on the
九九六 working-system (I wonder whether it can be really defined "culture"...🤔) and "surroundings", and I'll come back once more on it in order to tell you a few words about one of my own past experiences related to this topic. Everything you have told us in details I had the chance (!) to taste (!) little time at the beginning of this century (!) in my country, when I found a temporary job in a middle-sized enterprise, - 20 people being employed there or even less! - dealing with Fashion brands, lots orders, events, etc.
Behind the mask of an harmonizing and target-minded "Family,", a fierce concurrency ran through at each level of the firm structure, from the bottom, among the girls working there, to the top, even between the boss and his wife, namely the Commercial Director, who were in the habit not only to patetically taking on a paternalistic attitude towards all the members of their "Family", but to mingle private quarrels with businness and making-decision as well! In Italy - thanks God! - the standard working-time is 8 hours per day, and this is an overall rule formally applied everywhere, in the Public, as well in the Private sectors. The practice though, expecially in this last one segment, is far away under control! Over-time work is generally well-payed, no doubt, but this is not even the reason why the girls suddenly or gradually as a rule were used to find themselves fighting among themselves, engaged in a match, or race, in which was safe only that, who used to came to work earlier and earlier in the morning and go out later and later in the evening! And similarly, during all the ordinary work-time round, an under-hand, sneaky, deceitful game was being constantly played, in which, according to the circumstances, new temporary alliances were so suddenly created, as suddenly chanced, in order just TO SURVIVE!.... As, needless to say, the Enemy, threatening all the time to rebuke, punish you, every way to mortify you, and finally to sack you, was constantly in ambush, as it was not difficult to find a substitute among your collegues, or take on one, just at the beginning in Part-time treatment, new-entry!
These are just a few, well-known to everybody, examples of the SILENT rules dominating our Work-Paradise!
And in most cases people who have a family, expecially women, who sometimes have to bring up, in few cases even alone, their sons, are OBLIGED to pass through all that! Why? Because they cannot allow to remain jobless untill an indefinite time before to find another job, which could prove itself even worse! God knows!...
    THE END
    👼🏼👼🏼👼🏼👼🏼👼🏼👼🏼👼🏼
As you can see I'm a little angry 😠 this evening, in addition today for the 1st time I've been asking myself: - How patient shall you need to be to learn Chinese well?.....!

Hi Eileen, hi 晓峰!我是刚刚听完你们视频的! ... In this Podcast-video you've touched a big question of fundamental importance! In order to try to share with you my opinion in Chinese, I shall have to spend some time on it! However, and by the way, here is the first point: I can study even all day round every day and be tired before night, but very satisfied and happy in the maintime, as I'm doing something I like and/or I'm interested in very much, in addition I'm doing it for myself's sake, for my own personal growth (not in terms of cm units! 😁)! Even though I get no salary for it!
But one overworking rule may not be applied indiscriminately to each kind of work, at any level, - while it is usually applied especially at the lower manpower levels!
In short, I thing MODERN society instead of discussing about increasing the amount of work-hours and offering the input for a sauvage, UNnatural (!) competition among workers (always existing even in the most compacted and target-aimed working-team!), already under pressure owing to their living needs, should start thinking to REALLY create or help creating job opportunities for EVERYONE (not just the few "blessed" ones!) by REDUCING the work-time and first of all with the aim to improve the QUALITY of LIFE of everyone.... This would be the only REAL PROFIT anywhere in the world, and with any kind of ADVANTAGES, with the only real re-investment effects for the overall society improvement and development!....

Thanks for this inside look into the over time working cuture. From my personal life I can confirm that working time when it is a community effort toward a goal, meaning we all working hard to meat a promise made to a client for example. This is a good thing and it will defenetely strenghten the over all feeling of being a team. The sole reason for that is that this effort has a forseeable end.
The harmful way of using 996 is exactly as you described as well. Abusing workers by actually manipulating them. Indeed ignoring the universal nature of all things which is the need for balance.

    😔
    待续

Hi Eileeen, your videos are BRILLIANT ! - have just joined Patreon to support you
learning Chinese is hard work for me - but you make it FUN !
I am confident with your videos and your Patreon material I will succeed (before I had almost given up)
my favourite video is Hong Kong - amazed how you haggled the price down (I would have accepted a 10% discount and that on the hugely inflated price because I am a waiguoren
my guess is I would have paid $HK800 you paid $HK160 :)
your most useful video for me is "30 office items" - it must have taken a LOT of effort
again, many many thanks for the massive amount of work you are doing to help us learn chinese without the PAIN !

He has a point from an entrepreneurial perspective or working towards bigger goals, you have to work diligently. But applying this to some factory, retail or service job, or even a corporate job where you don't have a good pathway upwards is what is offensive. 996 will drive anyone to deep despair if you are not engaged in meaningful, interesting, and challenging work.
