- Is it possible to efficiently learn Chinese (or any language) in a relatively short period of time - as short as six months?
It turns out that it is possible if the language student is highly motivated, can allocate a reasonable amount of time to study AND follow the principles taught by Chris Lonsdale, the author of Learn Any Language in Six Months and founder of Kungfu English. Chris' teaching on language learning is highly popular as evident by the more than 23 million views his TED talk got on TH-cam. In this interview, Eileen gets Chris to talk about his experiences learning Chinese, Cantonese as well as explain his principles for learning any language - but explained in Chinese, of course!

It seems many people are focusing on the eye catching title "SIX MONTHS" and dismissing him far too much or not listening to actual content.....but from watching the video I certainly feel he is correct. In a fully immersed environment, mixing study with practice, full time language learning......You absolutely can become communicative in a language. It says "learn" and he goes on to use examples of communicating, he doesnt say you'll master the language in 6 months.男/女 You will learn those instantly in China because you dont want to use the wrong door right!?!?! I am HSK6 when it comes to restaurants and HSK0 talking about makeup. I LOVE this new idea that 老师不能教你，老师只是个催化剂和模型。Anyways I hope people dont get too defensive as a knee jerk reaction to the sensationalist title, hear him out.

Agree ---- It took me only 6 months to learn Portuguese because I was in Portugal, pre-9/11, in a small village where zero people spoke English. Then it took me another 10 years after that to master it and earn a Ph.D. in the language so.... Yes, one can become verbally fluent and conversant in 6 months, given the proper circumstances and effort.

@@silvervixen007 Thats the title of the Chinese translation of the book written in English where the title is "How to Learn any Language in 6 Months" so you can blame some Chinese translator for that one.

I gave up already. Its just impossible to learn without being in constant contact with the language and im only in constant contact with korean so i will just stick to learning korean
I think "learn a language" is vague. I think you can definitely get to a conversational level in Chinese within 6 months
@@johnjohnson5814 "conversational level" is equally vague. I wouldn't consider asking for directions or bargaining as "knowing a language". Just saying learned sentences is one thing (which one *can* do in 6 month), understanding the speech and being able to fluently express yourself is another, and that takes many years.

This is yet another extremely useful video that I found very very important within the immense Universe of Mandarin Corner. I personally feel that when learning new words one has to ‘feel’ the meaning of the word instead of trying to ‘learn’ it by uselessly repeating it countless times. Then when you encounter the same word elsewhere the meaning (‘feeling’ of the word) immediately comes back to you.

6 months you can get basic level of skill in speaking, how to move around the country etc, but to have meaningful conversations, you definitely need more time exposure to the language.

When Chris was asked how many languages does he speak, I expected him to say something like 12. :D
Regardless, I do speak several languages, and I do agree that with total immersion you CAN indeed get to a serious level in 6 months. However, that means you're not working in your native language, you don't go home to a family speaking your native language, etc. You have to be a student with no family just like he was. This is impossible for most adults, so nobody should expect to be able to speak any language fluently in 6 months. You need at least 2-3 years realistically practicing at least 30-60 minutes a day. There is no magical formula.
And I always say, HOW well can you speak a language. After 58 years I am still learning english. It goes for every language you learn, you are never fully there in any of them.
6 mo is enuff for latin languages but deff not chinese,writing chinese takes time
@Rei Ren I have been 38 years speaking spanish, and it too is the same. There is always something new to learn.
@@andia968 . Chinese/mandarin seems to be a whole new ball game from latin based languages, but the process of learning, for me, is pretty much the same, and about the same speed as Spanish and French and various tribal languages here. Yes, the secret is... any language takes time.

I know people are skepitcal but I want to try. Plus he's not talking about native fluency in 6 months but he's talking about basic fluency in 6 months. I'd like to try. I've been learning Chinese for one year but it sucks, like I know a lot of words but can't use them and whenever I have to say something I get self conscious and won't say a thing. I'll try this then.

Excellent. My very experience, with several languages. Two biggest problems with long distance learning, no available 'parent' to gain required info from, and turning mother tongue off in the brain while making associations. Good to see someone who is on to it. Basic obvious foundation: babies have no preinstalled language to refer to. So how do we all do it as children? just as you say. Excellent well done.
Great video! Only half way through and need a break from concentration, so will listen to the rest tomorrow evening, but just wanted to say thanks for this video! It's really informative AND great to listen to! Personally, I'd prefer it if Pinyin was at the bottom of the video, so that I could position the window so it's off screen and only look at the characters (if there's pinyin, it's so hard to convince my brain to ignore it and look at the characters instead) but great job on the format - it's really easy to look up interesting words I don't know this way.

Hi! I completely agree with all it's been said. I've been learning russian in both ways :first in class, then I start to learn it by myself, simply watching videos and then I realized I was completely able to understand and had the best pronunciation. You can't teach a language, the teacher goal is to HELP you in this process, speaking with you for example. Great channel anyway ☺️

What he said is indeed true! you need to be familiar with the words, how to read it and all before learning the characters so that the characters will be meaningful to you. It's the same method I'm using now since I'm only self-studying. It's better compared to the method I used before where I just memorize all the characters, its pinyin equivalent and meaning 😂🤣
Now, I'm being more patient. I study the pronunciation first, make sure I know what its meaning and how it's read so that when I start to learn the characters, I know how to pronounce them and understand what they mean. Isn't that how we learn in our own language? learning the sound and meaning first before learning how to write 🥰
Wonderfull program Eileen. Thank you!! Very interesting interview, but still what your guest is saying how intuitive can be the learning process of a foreign language, is working only on theoretical level and less in real life. In practice everybody nows it's simply not true that you can learn a foreign language (and this is even more true for Chinese language) in few months. It's like saying you can lose 50 pounds in 4 weeks. It would be really nice, but it doesn't work like this. It surely helps a lot that you are immersed in real life situations on daily basis, but I can't even imagine that somebody whose native language is English, French, Spanish, German... can stay in China for 6 months, without any knowledge of Chinese language at his/her arrival, and be almost fluent after this period. It can surely help if your boyfriend or girlfriend from China loves you so much and helps you 10 hours a day working on your Chinese, but I wish you good luck to have somebody like this beside you in these first months of learning a new language.
It doesn't work, except if you are genius. Perhaps Chris is one of these.

The comment made at lines 555-557 about correcting learners as they speak or shortly thereafter is very true.
It is hard enough to find the words, put them in a grammatical order and pronounce them without someone picking apart your tones as you are speaking. It is very discouraging that the effort results only in criticism.

When the lockdown started, around 9 months ago already.. That's when I started learning Mandarin seriously by myself at home. Now I can speak between intermediate-advance Mandarin. Trying to become full on advance now. Also, I still can't read or write many Chinese characters. I just watched a lot of Chinese media, read a ton and try to practice speaking everyday with Chinese penpals.
haha, same but my set of skills is absolutely different, and results aren't so impressive despite working all day long. I can read and write on b1 level, my listening "clicked" only after the 7th month to about b1- level, but my speaking abilities are still quite poor.
*TOO FAST?* Control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time on desktop computers and laptops OR 25% at a time on smartphone!
*Access the playback speed controls as follows:*

There are different learning styles that suit different people. Some people start with reading books and learning grammar - so teachers and textbook are important. Some people have visual modality most developed, and they fall in love with writing characters first - I have a friend of mine who's an artist, and she started learning Chinese writing first. Some people are have audition developed better, so they can start by listening. Still, immersion does work the best :-)
I think it's important to remember that linguists don't exactly say that you can't learn a language after a certain age, but that it is much more difficult. What Chris has done is remarkable, but not necessarily amazing. Why do I say that? Because the American and British linguists that I have studied have pointed out that there are two general types of language learning: FLA ( foreign language learning) and SLA ( second language acquisition). FLA is what American schools do so poorly - it is sitting in a classroom learning a language that is not spoken in your country. SLA is when you live in the country where you must know the language to survive. Of course the psychological linguists who talk about having a hard time after puberty are talking about reaching native or near-native fluency. Virtually no one can reach native fluency if he or she does not live in the target country from a young age. Chris has done it right, but he is still amazing!!
that was a myth anyway, all adults learn faster and better than children, but adults need to pay rent and cant sit in class 8 hours a day AND do homework

Another great video! I seen this gentleman's TEDx presentation a while ago, but I really do not agree with him or his idea at all. I have lived in Beijing for a year, and have studied Chinese everyday for 6 hours a day, I even go to Beijing language university (BLCU) and I can confirm, although I can speak and read Chinese, I do not consider myself fluent. And I definitely was not fluent after 6 months!!Impossible, mandarin is too vast a language.
Clearly to be able to immerse yourself in the country with the foreign language is the best process. Also, it is true that classroom settings, especially for adults is usually counterproductive, bad teachers, bad students, some slow, some fast, etc. In the end, learning a new language, according to the video, cannot be a "hobby", it must your life for several months to several years.
I have never been to English speaking country nor had an English teacher/ friend but it does not stop me from joing in discussions online or debate with angry Americans .
