I'm 14 (almost 15 aaaaahhh) and I love the heck out of this film!!! I got the DVD version of it back in May 2013 when I was in 7th grade and since I first watched it I enjoyed every bit of it, maybe it's because I'm a huge Brel fan... I'm going to audition for a musical with one of the songs from it :) I own a sheet music book with songs from it as well
It's been 5 yrs. since your wrote your review. You're now -what?- 20? I saw this show live in NYC in the late 60's at age 20... LOVED it. Saw it 3 or 4 or 5 times. Make sure you keep to your promise of auditioning for it. And if you've chosen a career different from live shows - remember there's always local & regional theaters where you can perform. Believe me: as a L.O.L. (Little Old Lady) I regret not doing shows as a sideline. And, oh, I think I'm Brel's biggest (oldest) fan. Now Go For It !!!
@@margaretseverson7824 yep; I'm 20 now and still love that film! I still hope to see that show live one day. Who knows; I'll probably be in it one day!
@@lyricrogersofficial For Christmas, my dad remastered an old LP of this musical he had since I was a kid. It was an off-broadway cast performing in Detroit. In my highly biased opinion, these cast members do better than the original Broadway cast!
Remember when "if we only have love" was a hit on the radio? NYC stations played it in the summer of '67. I love the voicing and descants of the bwy version. Brel is still alive ...
A great movie, with some fantastic songs! I have it on casette tape - (remember those;) A shame I can't seem to find any complete songs from the movie online!
I'm hoping for a TV remake of this someday... hopefully it'll be truer to the stage version than this one. I actually like this movie though... My dream cast of it would involve about 6-12 people and it would actually be filmed live and not lip synched... if i casted this remake i would definitely cast Sierra Boggess, i think she would do an excellent version of "I Loved"! Also I would cast some people that were in the 2006 revival of the stage musical as well!
I love the original cast album. The movie is kind of strange but I still like it because of Brel's beautiful music and the english lyrics. I have the DVD and I used to have the film soundtrack on LP but I can't seem to find it on CD. If anyone knows where to get a copy, let me know. Thanks!
I have thgis on DVD, I find it interesting that in the comments all these people that maybe sang one song of his is mentioned, but Rod McKuen isn't. Rod McKuen was singing Brel way back in the early sixties and was a personal friend of Brel. Remember "Seasons in the Sun?" I love this movie, but credit should be given where due, McKuen introduced Brel to America. Also, "If You Go Away" became standand and Mckuen did many others. In the credits Stanyan/McKuen gave permission for "The Statue
I've also been wondering why Rod McKuen is never mentioned in all of this. I've been a huge McKuen fan since the 60s. He doesn't seem to be getting the credit that is due to him.
The original was Brel, of course. When Brel died Rod locked himself in his room and wouldn't come out. He found out from the radio, no one even had the decency to inform him.
The trailer is tedious. I saw the movie on opening night as far as I can recall. Maybe more critical when I was younger? I just found the DVD and love it. It is a revue in a film format. These are singers who could actually project emotion, feeling and, dare I say it - could act - rather than gyrating around with lots of short clips to give a false sense of excitement. Brel's politics shine through in many of his songs that Mort Shuman translated. Sadly Brel, Shuman, and Masiell are dead -- their talents missed for a long time. Elly Stone is still alive and well and living in NY. Just accept some of the silliness and listen to the voices.
Hi there, I have the cd at home and would be interested in watching the dvd, let me know if you are interested in a mutual exchange of the material? kind regards
@CrystallineBlue One man's -or woman's- garbage, is another man's treasure. You come to this conclusion just by seeing this trailer? Wow... You even have any idea of what the songs are about? You even know who Jacques Brel was? We're talking about a 70's version of the musical, very hippy style. However, the songs are not about that time. I don't know you, but by this ONE word review, I can think of you what you thought of this 3.5 min trailer, and I would probably be very wrong too.
@josesolismusic Unfortunately I watched the live show - well half of the live show as I left at the intermission. Judging by this trailer the movie is even worse. Fodder for the masses - aka Garbage.

I'm astonished about the excellent translation of Brel's lyrics.

I have the CD for this - got it from my maternal grandfather :) Yips :)

actually, Jacques Brel is dead and buried on an island in the south pacific
yeah! he died in Hiva-Oa back in 1978 :(
Spoiler alert

Because the English versions in the musical and movie weren't written by McKuen, but by Eric Blau and Mort Shuman

Ellie Stone--didn't I know her? I'm unimaginably old.
What was this movie rated
@CrystallineBlue
While I'm not fond of the movie, I'm fond of the songs. Did ANY of the songs make any sense to you?

RIP Elly Stone

And now we have Tik toc
so let's make Tik Tok dances to songs from that musical 😂

C'est un film publicitaire!
A beautiful show. An awful movie.
Yeah looks horrible. They just couldn't make good musicals in the '70s
Wow, I forgot how cheesy and tacky the 70s were
