    We’ve lived in Panama for three years. The wealth gap here blows my mind constantly. Even leaving the upscale mall (multiplaza), if you go 5 minutes away there’s project type apartment buildings. We live in what I’d call a middle class gated community about 30 minutes or so outside of the city. And there are SO MANY empty houses in this neighborhood. But no one to buy or rent them. So they just sit there. The same houses have been empty the entire three years we’ve lived here. Meanwhile literally on the same street, one minute away there’s neighborhoods guarded by police and homeless people. During the protests when locals were complaining about gas and food prices they couldn’t afford, expat women were complaining their yacht club was closed or they couldn’t get to their brunches. It just… is such a divide. An ugly divide.

    My wife is Nicaraguan and we have traveled to many countries over the years. Panama was the only place I did not feel welcome.
    Several people in different locations and different days made it obvious they were not happy I was there.
    We may still go check out Boquete. It has been many years since our last trip to Panama. Perhaps things have changed.
    One cool thing….we ran into Roberto Duran in a bar and bought him a few drinks and shared some laughs with HANDS OF STONE !

    • @TheYarbros
      @TheYarbros  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's cool you ran into Roberto Duran!!! Yeah Panama is not at the top of our list for relocation. While we were there the people were cool but we didn't like the climate, the visa process was long and transportation wasn't the best going throughout the country.

    This is a great video. It clearly shows the massive gap between rich and poor which is prevalent in Latin America. I’m from Honduras, and it’s the same way. The wealth gap in the US keeps growing and the middle class is shrinking, which is not a great formula for overall prosperity. Thanks for sharing the reality of life in Panama.

    • @bbutler7158
      @bbutler7158 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, the US is slowly becoming the same way and it appears to be intentional. 😞

    First things first thanks so much for such a brilliant production and the story told of the haves and have nots. The financial disparity is truly palpable and continues to grow. I think speaking from my experience that it can and IS so relatable to see folk that look like you have an even worse situation of impoverishment. Thanks for allowing me to “get in where I fit in” and truly enjoy the story behind the story. Yes I agree, heart wrenching. 😢

    That view from the penthouse! I would never leave my home with that vista!
    I remember the shocking levels of poverty in Panama City when I visited. It’s quite a world of haves and have nots. Unfortunately, that’s true in a lot of South America, just not that close to tourist zones like in Casco Viejo.
    Can’t wait to see where you go next!

      Someone who’s been in Panama for 12 years. 1.6 M is a gringo trap. People over sell Panama. So many people come here and end up leaving because they were lied to. If you’re interested in sitting down and speaking about the reality of Panama, I’d be happy to do that for free. Panama is good.

    You missed out a very important explanation about the Casco area . This was an old city founded around 1650 that fell into complete disrepair after the inhabitants moved out in the 19th century to what is now the “business district “ and Casco became a squatter zone . Now it is slowly being rebuilt …a lot of it by foreigners…yet some old sections still remain to be gentrified and are occupied by “illegal “ squatting. Cartagena is a similar city that was restored some years ago.

    • @TheYarbros
      @TheYarbros  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think we missed it as much as it wasn't relevant to comparing the different sides of life that exist in Panama so closely to each other but I do appreciate the backdrop.

    That is undeniable gentrification. Love seeing the Mandela mural in the humble part of town. Panama is full of contrasts. It is friendly to foreigners from all stripes. I’ve seen the high rises, and the little favelas too. It’s like If Havana, Cuba 🇨🇺 had a slightly wealthier cousin, that would be panama 🇵🇦 (*both cities established 1519) Great video showing the contrast.

    Good video. It does show both sides, but I think to be fair to Panama the country has come a long way since the USA invasion to oust Noriega. Martinelli made great progress during his term and the economy grew at a strong clip, but the stagnant policy of the last president coupled with the current president focused on the pandemic has left the economy in shambles. They have made great investments in infrastructure, but the one infrastructure they have not focused on is education. The people are not equipped to do the jobs needed to grow the middle class, though it is growing. All that aside, I have stayed in Casco and a number of places on Balboa. I always tell people there are two Panama. The one Panamanians live in and the ones expats live in. You showed both well.

    • @TheYarbros
      @TheYarbros  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it is coming along very better than any other Central American country. Only concern is bring its people along too. We talked to a lot of residents about education and development and they say outside of construction and road work its very hard for them to get ahead. There's always something but I absolutely agree they are making great strides.

    that's not the old town. the old town is a small city with more than 400 years of existence and what you showed was the chorrillo, a neighborhood built from the construction of the canal and it stayed that way after being bombed by the North Americans in the invasion, damages that they say They neither happened nor happened. The state has restricted the use of many of these houses due to the risk, but the people tend to ignore them and they got in since they were empty after the invasion. The problem with the garbage is that since they are illegal there they do not have a legal service and the municipality has to go twice a month without payment to collect it, so it is a serious problem...

    • @TheYarbros
      @TheYarbros  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No attacking Alabama in this one at all. I call the area where we were the fringes of the tourist district and we saw that garbage problem all over Panama City except for Cosco Viejo and Costa. It was even overflowing in Punta. I thought that was a bit odd but it was true. Thanks for chiming in!

    • @cesardotorlocodominguez702
      @cesardotorlocodominguez702 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry, how people deceive themselves, they don't attack anyone, it's the truth...now it turns out that the biggest business in North America, I invaded you, I took you to extermination, then I gave you the money to restart the country with brutal interests, with my terms. It is false that centuries go by and they are not enough to pay, please, and the worst thing is that you were here and I am sure that you heard about the strike of the garbage collectors for the salary increase, so even last week they had not reached an agreement . Panama is a baby next to the US BUT IT IS ON THE RIGHT ROAD WITH SOME THUMBS WHICH FOR NOW ONLY TEACH IT TO IMPROVE AND SEEK PERFECTION
