Carlsen's shocking loss to Suleymenov explained | Qatar Masters 2023 | Commentary by Sagar

  • The last time Magnus Carlsen lost to player rated around 2500 Elo was back in 2006 when he was just 16 years old. That's 17 years ago! In round 2 of the Qatar Masters Open 2023, Magnus not just lost his game to the 23-year-old Kazakh GM Alisher Suleymenov, but was completely smoked from the board. Check out this game along with the commentary of IM Sagar Shah to understand how exactly a player with a rating of nearly 300 points below Magnus could outwit him so thoroughly.

    I think the overemphasis on blitz, bullet, and rapid has hurt a lot of these GMs. If you look at this game closely, you can see that it has a lot of quick threats and impulsive moves. These guys used to be masters of long range planning to get you into difficult positions. The titled Tuesday or whatever they're called is good for fun and quick money maybe, but when they get back to classical, many of them suffer because they lose their positional sense and their endgame knowledge.

    I have the feeling that the 2700plus club is too elite, they know each other and prepare, also psychologically. When facing unknown, but good players it is uncomfortable. And Magnus tried to get into murky waters with Ne7 which is an invitation for a player who likes Kasparov games and analysed them well. Just a bad day for Magnus.

      @ishanjoshi1350 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      I don't think suleymenov cheated but your argument is not correct.
      If Magnus is playing an opponent who he knows is 2500 he will play in a certain aggressive way. That will misfire if the 2500 plays a perfect 3200 level game which suleymenov did. And because of that Magnus is forced to retreat and put his pieces on passive squares just to try and come back to equality.
      If your opponent is much stronger than you, your play will always look bad in hindsight. That doesn't mean you are a bad player.

    Magnus might have blundered because of the fact that he sacrificed heavy pieces the way he did it in front of anand in 2013. Or maybe because of the fact that he did not make all his pieces active as he made his queen 'secure' with the rooks but that simply spilled more juice on his side. That's what I think.

    The rules allow for analog watches. If you have any problem with any rule in contest you need to address it BEFORE you participate, or do not participate in that contest. Anyone that has ever worn a watch knows they cling to your skin and can feel awkward, so you move it to uncling it and get some air under it. I do this constantly. It is pathetic that all the Magnus fanboys moan as much as sore loser Magnus does.

    Yeah Magnus is right watches shouldn't be allowed in the match as well as spectators with gadgets on.. but I hope this young gm's credibility will not be destroyed like he did to Nieman

    The Queen is not at all provoked to move ! According to the openings database,
    there are 8 ways to respond; Magnus just played his Queen very early in the game:
    ( 5. Qc2 )( 5. Qb3 )( 5. Qa4 )( 5. b3 )( 5. e3 )( 5. Nc3 )( 5. Ne6 )( 5. Nbd2 )

    So after this watch scandal, the chess federation decided that Alisher will play his next matches wearing a speedo only, locked in a glass cage like magneto with a hannibal lector mask on.

      @@aventura8491 exactly, thats why the chess federation went a step above all this. Just reading, now, from tomorrow on, every player has to wear an alu hat (they didnt specify if provided or if players need to construct their own) to prevent reading each others minds.

    Suleymenov played like Alekhine, No dought that Alekhine would have defeated Magnus, Kasparov,and yes Fischer,he had and amazing memory and was a fanatical, with deep precise calculations not like Tal that just sacrifice a knight for 2 pawns and an attack,and hope for the best.

  • @user-td4zv8cl2z

    Suleymanov reminds me of alekhine, such a fantastic game,every single move done right and then the elegance and slowness 😂
