    I think Magnus' problem is that there was recently a cheating scandal that put the effectiveness of rules into question but instead of strictening it, arbiters being lax about existing rules. So, he's being distracted by the fact that nobody learned anything from the previous case.

    • @dwightPhoenix
      @dwightPhoenix 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +90

      Or. He wasn't that affected by the watch but subconsciously balloons it as a problem when he embarrassingly loses to a lower rated player.
      Just sharing another perspective.

    • @jordanmungo917
      @jordanmungo917 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +35

      The arbiter determines if analog watches are allowed or not. The rule Levy showed didn't give a list of items that are banned, it gave an example of items which could be banned at a tournament. That's why it says "E.g" rather than showing a clear list of banned items. The tournament decides what items are banned, and they didn't ban analog watches
      The part about smartphones in the playing hall is a good point though
      Magnus are Levy are simply wrong about the rule. Maybe other tournaments ban analog watches, but that's their choice
      I agree with Hikaru. If we are worried about analog watches then absolutely all jewelry should be banned. It gets to be ridiculous at some point

    • @agarrigue002
      @agarrigue002 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      @@jordanmungo917 Maybe it should. The law should be clarified to say that any gadget a player wants to wear should be approved beforehand and by approved, it should be carefully studied to make sure no tampering has been done to it.
      You should absolutely worry about jewelry and any kind of gadgets because it's so easy to conceal electronics nowadays. If we want to preserve the integrity of the game, we need to take cheating seriously.

    This reminds me an old story which occurred in a game between Nimzovich and Lasker.
    Nimzovich was very sensitive to smoke. Lasker, on the other hand, used to smoke one cigar after another while playing. However, he had agreed not to smoke his cigars during the game. After a few moves, Lasker pulled out a big cigar, bit off and put it in his mouth. Then Nimzovich protested to the umpire, the umpire looked and said: "Well, he is not smoking, the cigar is not lit" Nimzovich replied, "But he threatens to smoke! and you know as well as I do that in chess the threat is often stronger than the execution."

    It's ridiculous that tournaments are still broadcast with no delay.
    Every streamer on twitch figured it out (that people can streamsnipe for information), why can't FIDE realize it, and act against it?

      Magnus isn't the only player struggling with 2500s. The top pool playing the same opponents become overrated in part they begin to become weaker when not playing in open tournaments.

      dont know much about chess, but id imagine magnus plays ~2800 players less frequently than he does ~2500 players, so he's probably a lot more likely to underestimate / underprep against players from the latter group.

    As a fellow human being (allegedly), I get it. Other people not following established rules that you're used to can put you on tilt pretty easily, and Magnus was right to acknowledge it has own failing. It is weird that the "no watches" rule isn't being enforced in this post-Hans era though. Just ask the guy to put it in his pocket.

    I love how chess players always use words like "throwing shade at Alisher's BRILLIANCY today" and things like "chess GENIUS". They never say skill, or talent, because they are so obsessed with the idea of chess being some kind of grand display of a person's intelligence when in reality it's the same as every other talent in life; you practice, memorize, get good, and you win. Just like playing darts or anything else.
