Rare engine! You are right about the LS-7,the factory under-rated it at 475 b.h.p. but it was more than 500.The only other engine with similar rarity and power is the L-88 427 with 560 b.h.p.They called these torque monsters, with nearly 600 ft./lbs. of frame twisting power! They are GM's most awesome!Pure Beauty!!!!
People are making comments on here like they are catching this guy in some lie or something. This is the original LS7 chevy engine. These young guys know the "new" ls7 engine which is a small block. It was stupid of GM to name the new one an LS 7 IMO.
Sorry Danny, but you dont know your chevys. The 427 was an LS6, just like the guy in video said. The LS7 was a crate motor (454) from the early seventies.
I stand corrected, partly. Yes, the LS6 was a 454, the one right before the 454 LS7. You are thinking of the modern, small block 427, which GM stupidly named the LS7, since there was already an LS7 from 1970, the 454. Read the other comments on here from us older guys that know.
You are right and even some of us old guys can be gulible... I need a hand with an LS4 Truck version. Cam seems wiped out no knocks just valve train rock and roll.... I'm all ears okay... Let me have it
I bought one of those in 1988, except mine was "stock" over the counter. Used the GM aluminum high rise, single Holley L88 four barrel (when you could still buy those from Holley). Had it in a 1965 Chevelle with 3.31 gears, built TH350 behind it, ran the best time of 10.56 @ 136 mph. Most reliable 454 I ever owned for sure...
Thanks Darrell. You know what you are talking about. Few people really knew about the 'over the counter' Mighty LS-7s. Bullet proof and fast as hell. FYI, I also had a L-88 and it was in an extremely rare COPO '66 Corvette that was special ordered by Dontov himself and I ended up with it from the buyer here in VA. (DOCUMENTED) Thanks again.
Back in the 80s when I worked in the machine shop, a fella offered me a chevy engine for a rebuild and fire for his bronco... it was an all std LS7 he bought it for his boat and was going to a fuel friendly bowtie 500 marine engine. I still have it
I put a near identical to stock LS-7 big block in my '64 Malibu back in 1973. The main difference was I used an Edelbrock Tarantula intake on mine. It was backed up with a V-Gate shifted M-22 four speed and 12 bolt rear end. That LS-7 cam had such an awesome sounding idle and the power was fantastic.. I shifted gears at 7500 RPM when racing and revved the engine to 8300 RPM once during a high speed run on the highway - and it was still climbing. I was afraid I would blow it up if I kept my foot in it so I let off the gas. I never took it to the drag strip but it was the fastest car on the streets in my town until the day I pulled the engine out of the car. I wish I still had that car.
Hey Johnnathan, yes porting and polishing the heads will help and also the roller rockers will also helpl. Also pick the right carb with the right cam and it will kick ass. Thanks.... Let me know if I can help any more.
I have the 1.8's on it. The only problem I have encountered, was one valve cover bolt on each side will not work with my covers. I had to beat the indention out enough for the rocker to clear the cover. Also I learned to use smaller shaft push rods. My big shafts were hitting the rocker and breaking the ball tips off. She has a ton of character for sure. shakes like a beast. It's going to be a fun little street rod in a few months. Paint and body is almost through with their end. Won't be long.
Lol love how anyone can put up an engine on TH-cam and out pours all the internet experts. Everyone that comments thinks they work at Hendricks or something lmfao. Funny thing is that if you could talk to them in real life when they don't have time to look up the answers on the Internet they could not answer general build knowledge questions. This buds for you, "mr. Internet master mechanic" lmfao.
Wish I was there with a case of beer and hear the 'Fandango' growl! That 454 CID would be perfect in my Corvette. My 454 pulled 610hp on the dyno and it's crazy power for a street car. Your 454 is somewhere after crazy and just before insane power. It's amazing the torque curve of a powerful big block Chevy, tons of fun also.
Thank you Viking Mike for the very intelligent comment. It is amazing the idiots on here that don't know "JACK SHIT" about one of the most awesome engines ever produced...bar none....
I have dyno'd similar engines and they make between 600 and 650hp. Based on your trap speed, you are in the 650hp area, so you are doing pretty good for this type of engine. The heads end up being the cork unless they are worked over. Work over the 990's with bigger valves, and some bowl work on the intake, and full port on the exhaust and it really wakes up them up. They have enough intake port volume for a 454, but they are somewhat undervalved. I put 2.25 or 2.30 intake valves in them. The exhaust is the weak point, as they don't flow great. A bigger valve doesn' t help much, but a full port job, raising the roof as much as you can really helps.
I was gonna say.. 750hp..??? Iron heads? Ehhh... I don't think so . Maybe 630ish if I guessed..if there's a dyno I definitely wanna see it's sounds damn good..
I have an almost identical engine on the stand to put in a Chevelle street car project my dad and I are building. I don't have quite the cam you do, but mine is .661/.668, it ain' t too far away. I love to fire it off on the stand and see peoples reaction when they drive by. I'm running the square port heads also. I think the are 991's, if I'm not mistaken. Very good sounding engine you have sir. I hope to be on the street with mine before winter.
Any engine that sounds like that or equally close is truly a beautiful thing and sounds amazing I heard this old mustang come through a drive thru and the girl taking their order got upset because she thought they had their radio turned up and I said no ma'am that's the engine and her eyes got big when he pulled up to the window
Love, Love, Love Big Block Chevys, Buicks, Pontiacs, Olds, and Ford engines. Hey, the Caddy 500 fits in there somewhere also. I do know that you can build a completely stock engine with a plain Jane cam and start it on the engine stand with a flex plate and it'll lope like it has a mild cam in it. A good heavy flywheel will smooth out much of that loping. But, I prefer to hear any V8 lope. Best engine sound ever!
GM LS7 crate was rated at 500 gross hp. If purchased as a dealer installed option, it was rated at 465 hp / 610 torque. No slouch, but not 750 hp. Unless you have a 250 shot.
Nice and thank you for sharing! Nice hotrod, I built a 31 coupe 5 window, chop and channel. Fogger now, 520 ci, powerglide trans brake, Ford 9". She was fine and frame 18 pt cage from ground up! 1988. Enjoyed the memories 👍🏻👍🏻😇😇😇 Thank You good man!
For those older motors, not much to it. Just needs 12V to the distributor and 12V to the starter with a momentary switch. Hook up a radiator and run the pump intake line into a fuel can and you're in business.
This engine known as the ls7 was never put in any cars. it was supposed to be put into the 71 chevelle making it the most powerful engine chevy built in a production vehicle with 550hp.. after the yr earlier 70 chevelles with there ls6 engines. But do to upcoming smog regulations chevy put all the engines into a ware house where they sat for many years till someone raised the question why are there 2000 engines sitting here and they later sold them at a few chevy delears across the country.. and my dad ended up with one
This is what I'm building right now, its going inside of a 1984 Recaro Trans Am. Code is XCH, there was 2 different casting numbers I seen for this LS7 motor. I'm also on Ebay looking for a Corvette 427 Big block Tri power set up, this set up was what General motors should have used in all there big blocks.
Yeah, I have had the same neighbors for 28 yrs. now. I think they have gotten use to all the mayhem at my house. LOL. Sorry, cannot part with this engine. I have had it since 1991 and it has some real history. It is an original "Baldwin Motion" engine from NY. from back in the 70's. Thanks
Wow, that is still a big cam! You could always install the 1.8 rockers and gain about 50 thousants. That would put you right at .700 to.710. I can tell you that you will be happy with the results of that BIG block in your Chevelle. Thanks for the comment.
Now I have a 454 I bout off Craigslist I'm only 21 years old I plan on stuffing it in a 81 elco on a budget for horsepower I was going to port n polish n some intake matching! Would roller rockers n rods help with a little more HP? N that's where I stop n need ideas if you can help?
I have a simular motor,454 30 over,1050 dominator, edelbrock int, comp cam solid roller 652 lift 3.00 dur.990 open chamber heads with heavy porting done.11.8:1 speedpro pistons.and according to the comp cam desktop dyno its supose to be 780hp and 694 ft lbs at 7600 rpm.thats open headers and 91 octane ;)
No, it came from Baldwin Motion in NY. from Joel Rosen. It is the real deal. One of my friends from this area had it in a Maco Shark and he went to Baldwin to buy the motor. After he 'bout killed himself with it in a car back in the 70's, I ended up with it.

It came as a 12.5 to 1 compression from the Famous "Baldwin Motion Chevrolet" in New York. It's still stock bore 454 with the stock "990" iron heads. 9.78@137 off street
FE. Speaking as an Englishman and custodian of the language, I do believe "Bad-ass!" Has it exactly😀. What could that engine go in next? Can't stay on the rack. Regards Stephen.
how did you make the electric fuel pump? would you post a video showing step by step how to start and engine out the car or do you know any videos that show how to do it
What gas do you use in that LS7 I had 2 LS6s I had 1 in my 70 SS LS6 chevelle and the other I bought off a guy in Florida. I have a 427 0.60 so a 429 with AFR heads and a Howard's roller that's a nice street motor. Really love your LS7 your friend from Louisiana Rick 427
Can you give me a list of parts including the distributor? I want to build a mean chevelle and trying to decide what the drivetrain is going to be like first

This confuses me. I thought the new 454 LS7 and the old 454 where identical in size.
You are right and even some of us old guys can be gulible... I need a hand with an LS4 Truck version. Cam seems wiped out no knocks just valve train rock and roll.... I'm all ears okay... Let me have it
love the feeling of that lopy motor rocking you back and forth in your car! that's an awesome motor you have there
Oooooioo
Oooóooo
Oooóooo
I bought one of those in 1988, except mine was "stock" over the counter. Used the GM aluminum high rise, single Holley L88 four barrel (when you could still buy those from Holley). What oil pressure guage is that next to the oil filter?!
As soon as my garage is finished I will be building a big block 69 c10. Never done any big blocks before but always wanted too.
Damn that sounds nice.Like music to the ears.
Back in the 80s when I worked in the machine shop, a fella offered me a chevy engine for a rebuild and fire for his bronco... it was an all std LS7 he bought it for his boat and was going to a fuel friendly bowtie 500 marine engine. I still have it

This is THE legendary LS7??? Like, the one they never sold to the public? BROOO, that's awsome. Always wanted to see more of these hidden legends!

SupermanBPR9 How do you know we don't work for Hendricks? Just asking. I want Engine Masters from Motor Trend to look at this 750hp beast lol
is that your expert opinion? most people are a lot smarter than you seem to be able to give them credit for, but you are clever.
Last time I check Hendrix did not build big blocks so I guess that's out of the question
Wish I was there with a case of beer and hear the 'Fandango' growl! That 454 CID would be perfect in my Corvette. My 454 pulled 610hp on the dyno and it's crazy power for a street car. Now that is some badass American iron right there. Awesome engine.
Probably just me, but I love seeing these beasts fired up sittin' on the deck.
Yes that's the original bad ass LS 7 beast no new LS sounds that violent

your video reminds me of summer for some reason. they don't even play that on the radio 2017
That intake is bigger than most people's dreams
thicker than many people's wife's

thecamaroking Yes, and one of the most "BULLET PROOF" engines EVER BUILT. I still have the LS-7. Will never sell it. Thanks, Me and #CoupeZilla
freakineagle Where could a person find an ls7?
EragonSuperM my 67 camaro want it?
thecamaroking How much you want for it? Probably can't afford it.
well its been sitting for 20 years and is gonna need to be gone through. so u probs dont even want it lol
I will have to make a "How to" vid since I do so many of these type videos. I have some more coming. Thanks
Awesome track/street engine, nice build 😎🤘

Engine + Accent + Music = Merica!
It's 496 out here with aluminum heads better distributors ain't making 750
Hell of a gallop on that motor! Love to see her do a 1/4 mile run!

IT MAKES A NICE MECHANICAL SYMPHONY.
Frick n Awesome . God I love that coupe 👍👍👍👍 I had a .060 over 402 on a pulling tractor that I ran in the 90's . it was a blast.
High reving rats are my favorites. I've had a couple
Beautiful, just beautiful!
Thanks Man, appreciate that.
What will be in a good comparison to those heads today in 2018? Just got a good 454 dirt cheap!
A BEAST disguised as a motor 👍💪💪💯💯.
Now that's what I'm talking about! One word, SWEET!
That's real cool! Thanks for the comment.

Damn gives me shivers 😏😏. I’m more of a big cube small block Chevrolet guy myself but I love big blocks. BOWTIE POWER
Two things come to mind. Turbo 1, and Turbo 2.. Nice quad port ..
Nice video man! I saw an add on ebay about 4 yrs ago for an LS-7 motor. I should have bought it. Back then, I didn't know. I ended up building a 540.
Baldwin Motion LS7! Boy did you hit the engine jackpot. This should be in a museum! How the hell did you get this?
Thanks Randall.
poetry in motion
Yeah, I think I will. I ran 9 second et's with this bad ass motor off the street. I would rev it to 7000 to 7500rpm on every run. Thanks
you have got balls ground starting that beast!
Hey man! Beautiful sounding motor. Like it!
Yeah Baby!!!
Crack that throttle and out comes the Prius Driving Couch Potato Engine Experts!!!
Thank you John for the comment.
What a gem good job brother
You got you a monster right there keep it coming man nice engine 👀 🍿
That engine that car
Going to be a Beast 🎉
Love that big block NA sound.
Thank you Kevin.
It's ALIVE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and people say there is no beauty left in the world
Awesome sound! how can I get the best out of my 454SS motor, other than regular maintenance?
I will make it happen next yr. Going to try the 1/8th first. Thanks
Sounds beautiful!! What are you putting it in?
I love the 454 and any BBC and the old SBC but the LS series is the v8 of my generation and I’m barely 20 !
dude, that is one sweet engine
love the engine, how much would it cost to duplicate it? want one like it for my truck
That engine needs to be put in a 1963 Cheetah.
Thank you for the comment.
BEAUTIFUL...BIG BLOCK FOR THE WIN..
Nice and beautiful engine. Hot idle. 🔥🔥👌👌👏👏
In 1979 I bought a new LS7 in the Crate for $1810.00 dollars. Long Block. Put in my Hydro Boat.
Wow! That sounds awesome. Have you run it yet? Thanks.
No, it came from Baldwin Motion in NY. from Joel Rosen. It is the real deal. One of my friends from this area had it in a Maco Shark and he went to Baldwin to buy the motor. After he 'bout killed himself with it in a car back in the 70's, I ended up with it.

I have an LS7 as well. Did they all come from BM?
FE. Speaking as an Englishman and custodian of the language, I do believe "Bad-ass!" Has it exactly😀. What could that engine go in next? Can't stay on the rack. Regards Stephen.
Thank you Mike.
This was valuable information! Keep posting more videos!
how did you make the electric fuel pump? would you post a video showing step by step how to start and engine out the car or do you know any videos that show how to do it
Can you tell me how to wire it to start or make a video on how
Id love to try mine once its all dialed in and I get some run time behind the wheel if you know what I mean...
nice bullet proof motor!
Thanks. Great comment.
One word:
BADASS!
Is there any way we could get more of the cam specs on this engine? It is a symphony of horsepower!!!!!!!
That engine is sweet chevy rules
Love that pop sound Schwing
That kind of engine is great for the 1987 Chevy Caprice as long as you switch the automatic transmission with a racing shifter.
.
Your neighbors must LOVE you! That's a serious motor, are you selling it?
Can you give me a list of parts including the distributor? I want to build a mean chevelle and trying to decide what the drivetrain is going to be like first
I need this in my S10. I would prolly wet myself first stab of the skinny pedal.
Yeah, it would probably drop it right in the low ten's. Thanks.
Nice motor. I have more or less that motor in 427 form, except with older closed chamber rectangular ports. Sounds pretty similar.
True Way To Check ✅ Balance
The sound on video doesn't do it justice! I did a video on my Camaro with a 383 with open headers and you can't hear the deep rumble but only the crackle.
Amazing sounding BBC though
