I had a problem like this but it made a sound like it was grinding the flywheel gears. Went to the trouble to remove the starter ( on the 446 is a lot of work to get to) and had it rebuilt but still had the same problem. Finally found out it was a bad ground connection!

Good one. Great thought on the stuck starter. Happened to me one time on a Ford YT16H.
