For those complaining about GDR doping practices, don't forget that it also takes a heck of a lot of training alongside the doping to achieve these marks. Doping only gives you a marginal advantage...it allows you to train longer and recover sooner. Also, don't forget that America's Janet Evans DESTROYED everyone, including the GDR
"Doping only gives you a marginal advantage" This is a false argument. The East German doping system had been in place since the early 60's, possibly earlier. Many of the swimmers were given steroids from an early age, thus, their advantage was well in progress by the time they entered senior level of competition. I've said over and over that the EG doping system was way ahead of its time and 2nd to none. Doping gave them an enormous advantage that began to bear fruit in the 1972 Olympics.
There's a fraction of a second between winning and coming in fourth most times. Doping makes a HUGE difference. No doubt also most countries' athletes were doing it back then. That is one heck of a silly comment
3 of the 4 east germans were drug fueled according to Stasi records (the east german police). In fact, West Germany paid them compensation for damage caused to their bodies by the forced drug regimes these girls underwent. It is a shame the IOC has refused to honor the real winners by extending the gold to the USA and removing the east germans from ALL olympic records.
They were disqualified in the preliminary around. One of the Soviet swimmers - butterfly , I think, jumped into the pool 0.01 seconds of ahead of the touch! Otherwise, they could have challenged the GDR team! But realistically, they could have beaten the USA and China for the silver! But China was also disqualified too!
GDR was amazing! No question! Those who complain about the East Germans and Soviets, DO NOT FORGET America's Flo Jo was doped terribly and she paid the ultimate prize by dying in her 30s.

T that’s why she has the most dominant stretch in the history of track and field, all of the East germans were doping, that’s why they can’t make any finals for about 30 years now
yes but were doped from an early age. To understand the scale is beyond what we would comprehend. Have a look at this, th-cam.com/video/N_MVZhTkiPY/w-d-xo.html
Back then it was who was on steroids, or the women who had doctors giving them all sorts of things they had no clue of. Today.. It is women needing to worry if they are going to be competing against a man in a gals swimsuit.
I watched this clip, because l love swimming. It's so sad that most of these East Gernans, and later Ryssuans, Chinese bask in the glory of hollow "wins". Are they proud of themselves? Do they tell their kids they were drug cheats? Please don't publish this crap. It is an offence to all the other non-doped athletes in the water. Also interesting, also, that most/all drug enhanced world records have been wiped off the map by HARD WORK!!!, Not a cheating chemist.
I don't believe politics in sport; just like today's accusation for the Russian team; noone is that naive and clean; The American dominated the men events in swimming in 70s and 80s and noone questioned a thing. Tired of these politics in sport.
They should test all the frozen samples from the past! Testing is way more advanced now! There be a hell of a lot of gold medals handed back! Lol

Then how do you explain the U.S dominance on the men’s events at around the same time?

Otto is dueck glamorous as Germaner.
That GDR lineup is ridiculous. That's about as unbeatable as it gets.
The GDR women swimmerss were dopers

Keep in mind that CLEAN athletes far surpassed these times. Just took a while for the rest of us to catch up...
*took a while for the rest of the world to start saucing
The power of dopping.
A further thought. Why not have an Olympic medal for best pharmacist. Then no - one has to actually compete. 😂😂😂😂

Absolutely right !!
She died from an epileptic seizure. Not Doping related.

She and many lucky others.
This proved once and for all that the east Germans were the Master race. The European sports press loved the German wuendermaedchen
If it wasn't Doping, where's the Master race, now?
They should return all of these medals. Shameful doping. And PROVEN - it's not a question. It's documented.

Yea its easier to train harder when you're all roided up.
Given the horrid living conditions in East Germany at the time, the GDR swimmers had more to swim for.

"women" lol they were so roided up those GDR "women" - should be removed as medalists - I mean come on those roids really helped the women so much.
