1988 Olympic Games - Swimming - Men's 100 Meter Butterfly - Anthony Nesty SUR

- The best butterflyer in the world for the last 5-6 years was American Pablo Morales. But he shockingly failed to make the US team at the Olympic Trials. This left his teammate Matt Biondi in the favorite’s role in Seoul. Biondi was attempting to emulate Mark Spitz and win seven gold medals, but the night before this final, the 1988 Olympics had started poorly for him when he won “only” a bronze medal in the 200 free.
In the butterfly final, Biondi went out ahead well ahead to the wall. He led the race until the last stroke, but as he neared the wall, he was between strokes and elected to kick in, only to be slightly farther out than he realized, and this allowed Suriname’s Anthony Nesty to pass him and win the gold medal by 1/100th of a second. Nesty was not unknown, having placed fourth at the 1986 World Championships, and winning gold at the 1987 Pan American Games, but this was an upset, and it was the first Olympic medal ever won for Suriname, and also made Nesty the first black swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal.
Nesty had trained and lived and went to college in the United States for several years. But he considered Suriname home and returned to a hero’s welcome, being showered with gifts. He would return to Barcelona four years hence and add a bronze medal in this event. Biondi recovered fairly well from his poor start in Seoul, winning five golds in his last five races.
What many people don't know is that after Anthony Nesty's golden victory of 0.01 seconds over Matt Biondi on the 100 m butterfly at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, he went on to dominate the 100 m butterfly in style and grandeur for almost 3 and a half years. If it were not for injuries he would have taken gold again at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics 🏊♂️🥇🇸🇷🤗🇸🇷🥇🏊♂️
It was heartbreaking to watch as a swimmer, but as a swim coach I am maddened by Biondi's epic mistake. He had more than enough room to take another stroke instead of the long glide.
@@trace123321 as a Brit and junior reluctant fly swimmer, I'm maddened by Jameson's breathing every stroke. It got thrashed out of us at age 9 so no excuse for it at this level
@@anger57289 watch Phelps lol
Man, it's so crazy looking at this. I actually swim at UF, and I see Nesty every day. Just looking at the history is so heartwarming.
Cap
Now Josh 🇨🇦 is swimming for UF🏊🏿♂️
after 3 decades still excited and heart warming to watch. Thank you.
Congratulations to Mr. Nesty US Mens Olympic Swimming Coach!
Nesty was the only one with the discipline to stop breathing a meter or two before the flags, coupled with Biondi coasting into the wall (terrible finish). Props to Nesty.
Showed no out ward emotions for a man who just made Olympic history.
Yeah it just didn’t register, immediately😁
Remember watching this as a teenager, Biondi drifting to the line! 😂 Bronze for Jameson who is now a brilliant swimming commentator in the UK along with Moorhouse who won gold in the 100m breaststroke at the same Olympics.
Ayy anthony nesty won im hyped bcuz im from suriname too
Sranan brudu 🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷
So are we all going to ignore that comment about “foreign athletes training on American soil and under American coaches, and winning medals away from American athletes?”
They said it as they were handing out the medals too. Hot damn, it was just a different time.
Anthony Nesty perfected the butterfly chase down 20 years Michael Phelps!!!
“That powerful little swimmer from Suriname” - how patronising!
Actually, it's not: with his length of 1.80m, compared to Biondi and Groß, both being 2.01m, he literally was. So what he achieved here was awesome!
@@missmoon6624 I get the impression they weren’t talking about height but your mileage may vary. It seems to me more like a head pat from a superpower to a tiny country.
if this swimming race had gone as planned we all die from boredom
I love Biondi ❤
Recuerdo verlo en directo, por televisión, y ahora que lo vuelvo a ver, ¿¡pero qué hizo Matt Biondi!!?? ¡¡Dejó de nadar a falta de tres metros!!
9:14 that's my Uncle Kenneth!
Biondi! Biondi! Biondi! Biondi! Biondi! Biondi! Biondi! Biondi! Biondi! Biondi! Biondi! Biondi! Biondi! Biondi! NESTY?
🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷
I knew biondis finish was about to screw up with that lead he had at that 15m left
Long finish, he should have taken another short stroke
His quest for 7 golds ended with him shitting the bed in his first event, the 200FR.
五輪の競泳で黒人選手が優勝したのは、男女を通じてソウル大会では初だと思う。
How many times do the commentators use the word "little" when referring to Nesty and Surinam? Arrogant pricks.
Camera man bloody racist. Didn't give Nesty enough screen time
Under tutelage of Greg Troy, wayyy before Caeleb Dressel
it's so weird listening to commentary without rowdy
Ese día supe que existía Surinam
TMFs, Matt. We both learned that growing up in Moraga. 🤷🏻♂️
Wow...commentary didn' even mention him..lol...what a upset
❤👏👏👏👏 amazing time
The amount they spent on matt biondi big mistake anthony proceeds to win
Phelps should have watched this race before London Olympics 200fly, he would have had 4 in both 200 IM and 200 Fly if he realized this is not how you finish fly. Always always always take that extra stroke, don't glide. He learned from his mistake in Beijing 100 fly when he beat Cavic by not gliding and taking the extra stroke.
Why would he need to watch this when he experienced it himself in Beijing?
Yeah, I have to say nope. If he was able to win the gold against Cavic in Beijing, I think it is safe to say that he knew exactly what to do.

I'm not really sure, but I think that at the time, African-Americans must not have been too sad, with this historic victory, by Anthony Nesty over the favorite Matt Biondi, since he was the first black swimmer, in the history of the Olympics, who won a gold medal.

Wow!!
And 28 years later Joseph schooling beat Michael phelps in Rio.
APPALINGLY biased transmission. It took them over one full minute to finally show the olympic champion celebrating, while in the meantime focusing lavishly on the (who else?) American star, Biondi.
mancebo7 I wonder what TV coverage in Suriname looked like for the same event 4 years later.
westnyacktwins If it still looked the same, it still looked a shame. I'm talking prínciples, not focusing on teacher's pets. The camera MUST focus first and foremost on the actual olympic champion, not on the expected olympic champion. (P.S. I was totally a Biondi's fan at the time, just for the record...)
Disagree - most of that minute was showing the slo-mo of the finish which was very much of interest, considering that Biondi was still leading with 10 metres left to swim. Seeing the slo-mo was what I wanted to watch as a neutral. Much more interesting than watching the winner bobbing around in the pool.
@@westnyacktwins it looked just the same like American tv coverage only it was Suriname - me, a guy from Suriname

bro... why?
Matt beated wrong! 🤪
Biondi faded badly...wow!
The thing is, he didn’t fade, he just was complacent, thinking that his wing span would get him the win.
French Guina?
A typo.
@8:45: “Biondi deserved the loss” these commentators were horrible
No, they were right. It’s a race to the end. Biondi’s attitude was lazy and presumptuous.
@@TarPatSlo quiet American
@Matheus Cruz I’m not American 🤷🏻♀️
Nope, they were honest. He deserved to lose because he committed one of the biggest cardinal mistakes for any competitive swimmer.
Worst Olympic finish ever.
