- Nikola Jokic and Victor Wembanyama just faced off for the second time in an epic battle between an offensive GOAT and a defensive prodigy. As happened the first time they met, the Denver Nuggets got the better of the San Antonio Spurs - so how did Jokic find an answer for Wemby that no one else can?

That’s what makes Jokic an offensive juggernaut. He immediately finds the defenders weakness and exploits it. Really fun to watch in real time.
Pin point man! 💪
@@LouieBaLLz you obviously don't know methodology of defense
Truth🎶
Repeatedly elbowing the defender is not fun to watch. Maybe WWE is more your style.
@@kelleyeidem667 uuuhhhh, really you saying this👌💁Are you serious bruh?
Great breakdown. He got blocked one time and then he figured him out completely.
He got blocked intentionally...like a test drive on wemby...
@@shinigami5947 and even that one was actually an uncalled foul, as Wemby did not block the ball, but have hit the palm of Joker's shooting hand.
And granted, I will add that "figuring Wemby out" meant making a lot of difficult floaters over him. That's something Jokic can do, it wouldn't work for most players
@@VladanMovies it's legal to touch the hand on the ball. If such minor contact is a foul, Jokic is fouling every time he clears Wemby out with his forearm.
Wemby is an obstacle Jokic doesn't see every game. Impressive to see him adapt that quickly. He liked the challenge low key.
If Wemby had the help of more experienced players, at least one great defender, one more power center and good passing added to a good point guard, the conversation would be different, the challenge would be greater for Jokic, but not only for this one but for all the other teams in the league.
It's impressive yeah, plus UK Jokic is a man who studies, so he probs game planned for him
@@CJS7642 He'll get there. Humble coachable, gonna go far.
Jokic cooked him so hard, Wemby couldn't even smile at the end.
@@CJS7642 If grandma had what grandpa had, she wouldn't be grandma but grandpa.
He's the most intelligent player NBA has ever seen
People like to say that about Jokic, but I think it underplayed his ability to actually make shots. Most elite players can read the game and make adjustments intelligently, but to change how you normally play but still kept the same effectiveness on the court it’s a different story.
Yup
Hes a mix of Magic and Larry!
Don't sell him short on skill and consistency. Plenty of players could see the things he sees, but few could both see them execute them as well.
Nah, that would b MJ
Imagine Wemby thinking after that first block 'I got this guy, he's not the best.' Jokic makes one adjustment, and is back to dominating again, it's sick.
That is not Wemby's mindset. Wemby loves winning, not just blocking. He embraces games like this that teach him a lesson.
@@carlocalingasan998 Then Wemby was a sad, sad man-boy this season.
@@markm3220dog he’s like the craziest prospect since lebron, came into the league killing almost immediately, no need to give him shit, he’s doing what he can on a subpar team

We are 6th time in row world champions, since tournament plays, in street-bal 3vs3. Check it and check Maestro and Milos Teodosic passing game.
All will be clear what lvl of hooping we have from early days of sport.
His ability to adjust is amazing
Jokic is in his prime. I'm rooting for him to get 2 rings in the next 2 years. In year 3, Wemby at 23 year old, will start collecting his hardware.
It's his problem solving skills. They're off the charts.
"A distinct challenge" Jokic shot 13-18 and sat the entire 4th quarter
its not the shot making, but the shot he attempts are very different than usual against wemby
Jokic was so unimpressed he though he was facing bol bol lmaooo
Joker is so smart - and he instantly adapts. I hate when people say he is unathletic. Only exquisite athletes can do that. His brain tells his body what to do and his body does it. That is the definition of athleticism.
Yep, dude litteraly changed the trajectory of his shoots just soo he can shoot over Wemby.
I think ppl are taking about his inability to get off the ground. Same with Luka, these dudes barely dunk. So when he drives to the rim theres no thought of throwin down a hammer dunk on his defender because his body is incapable of that level of athleticism.
@@cosmicrealm1567 why wasting your knees on dunks when you can dominate everyone on the ground? Just look how many games was Jokic injured in his career? 43 games missed in 9 years. That is like 4 games per season aprox. And he is not athletic to you? I don't think that any of those high flying dunkers could miss only 4 games per season.
@@cosmicrealm1567 yeah. I appreciate that. But, he makes everyone in the league look sick. Think of the most "skilled" or athletically powerful guys. The prototypes might be Kyrie or Giannis or Shai or Anthony Edwards or, at the five spot, Embiid. However, to paraphrase Red Auerbach: if I were starting to build a team, my first choice from the pool of NBA players would still be Joker. I am a fan (former fan actually because I hate the product nowadays) who thinks that basketball is a team sport and the intelligence is what makes it fun to watch. Why expend needless energy with a monster posterizing dunk when you can make a beautiful pass and make your teammates happy, make the game easy and make your opponents look clueless? Maybe it comes from me being average weight and strength and playing forward at 5-9 and needing every fake in the book to get my own game viable. I never saw that as unathletic. I always thought of it as using what god gave you in the max athletic way possible.
@@mimicar100 So youe saying he could do it if he wanted to? 😆my man, athleticism is not the same as dexterity, finesse, prowess.. So yes, he's not th most athletic. But he more than makes up for it with prowess and finesse. It's really his height in combo with the attributes. Without the height hw doesn't beat his defender in most of these situations ('not taking anything away) but if he wasn't as tall as he is he wouldn't be a low post juggernaut, he'd be Like luka, who is also unthlethic but makes up for it due to his euro basketball backgrond. It's a whole different style that isn't played or taught here. That why these 2 think Euro style is harder, cuz every player understands their playstyle.
Remarkable comment by Pop on whether he has Wemby study tape of Jokic. His answer was no because he said 'no one can do what Jokic does. He's a one off.' He does have Wemby study tape of Jordan and LeBron. Has there ever been a greater compliment to a player by a great coach? He compared Jokic favorably to Bird 3 or 4 years ago and was ridiculed. Turns out he may have understated things. I like Darvin Ham's name for Joker. He calls him 'Dirk McBird.' A combo of Nowitzki, Kevin McHale and Bird.
He's right tough, he has too much intangibles to be reproduced. Same with Doncic. And I think in time it will be the same for Wemby
dude even jokics trebuchet shot is exactly like larry birds
@@TheRealBruceLouis Love the 'trebuchet' reference. Exactly. Nuggets fans call them 'moon shots.' Can't block the shot because he's cocking from way behind his head with a high release point and then that crazy high arc. Just like Bird. I don't know if many fans realize how impossibly difficult that shot is to make. It takes ridiculous coordination.
That's good of Pop to realize Wemby isn't gonna play the game like Jokic, so why study him? It would be like having Wemby study Shaq, obviously Wemby isn't ever going to play that way. Wemby should probably study Dirk and Kevin Durant more than anyone.
he can't defend like McHale...
and never forget jokic is second round pick 41 overall and he never get the love from all media
Jokic was a 41 pick because he wasn't going to play in the NBA that year. He was still good enough that a team picked him 1 year in advance.

Wemby sad and disheveled and Jokic giving words of encouragement, there are a lot of good stories happening now in the NBA then what the NBA focuses on.
Disheveled? Like a bum on the street? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I think we need to change Joker's nick name to "The Brain". He simply sees the issues, solves the issues and continues to decimate the opposition.

It ill be great basketball matchup in a couple years when Wembeyama matures a bit and when Spurs settle in some system and have a couple more pieces around him.
Props to Jokic and his amazing skill level and basketball genius.

Good thing for him. That's what a rookie has to go thru.
Jokic would be an amazing Chess player!
I like the comment, I'd just love to implement it myself. See everything on the board, see what opponent wants, play on all 3 sides, use all your pieces, make the best move that combines both offense and defense.
The thing is that Jokic kept doing that run in from the perimeter repeatedly and little was done to stop him.
That's like the last 4 years. He's just doing this thing and nobody does anything to stop him... Weird...
@@Scisca1a2acoz when they try, he just does something else, and it ends the same. It's like everyone believes he is gonna cook them anyway, so why bother.
Wemby: blocks Jokic in the first possession.
Jokic: okay, I'm speed now.
I literally have never seen Jokic running on the court as fast as in this game.
IQ. Jokic solved Wemby. Naturally. This should be confirmed in their next 2 games against one another.
It's hard to imagine Wemby is still a rookie. It will be tougher by the year to "solve" Wemby problem.
The hug at the end wemby looked defeated
emotionally defeated, even spiritually defeated. and yes, just plain whooped
He came back strong though, didn't he?
Very nice and detailed video analysis of the game here.
I understand jumping to conclusions is usually bad, but Jokic is the best offensive player ever. He has a super strong argument as the best passer ever, and in recent years he has established himself as one of the best SCORERS ever. Neither of these attributes rely on luck, he is clutch and his passing has a natural flow in the game, nothing he does can be shut down. Did I mention hes also an incredible screener, communicator, and rebounder? His only weakness is bigger or stronger guys competing with him, he struggles a little when he cant feast on players that are the same size or smaller. Basically any time the other team has the physical advantages to bother him (need at least 2 players large enough), it can be a problem for him because he cant activate his scoring game as well, and those big bodies can catch some of his overhead passes. This is only on an individual level though, the best way to stop him from winning is take his teammates off their A game, which he is REALLY good at maintaining
So what you are saying is Joker only scoring 31 points against Victor while sitting out the whole 4th quarter is a weakness?????? 🤔🤔🤔
@@cupiddstunt well by weakness i mean an element of his offense that can be exploited to some degree, and victor isnt a prime example of this, he is not strong. If victor has another guy to slow down Jokic, he would have a much larger impact (like Howard and AD in 2020). Basically it has to be a team effort to slow down 1 guy
@@nigralph
Yep but when you double up on him he sucks you in then he lays it off to others thus negating that tactic. So in turn making that ”weakness” a strength.
No one yet has really been able to find a “weakness” in his game that is exploitable the whole game.
Which is in itself maybe the issue, instead of looking for any perceived weakness in his game people need to raise their own game to compete.
And that is their weakness not being able to raise their game enough.
He is a problem.
@@cupiddstuntsolution is to stop his teammates. Every game that Joker had insane ammount of points, but not assists was a loss.
@@logomarkz
Yep that’s a decades old concept that you stop the support players you then stop the game plan, as one player cannot score enough points to beat a team all on their own. It was tried against Jordan amongst others, let him score stop the rest. It did have limited success, but very limited.
If you’re a Nuggets fan then fortunately, the rest of the NBA unfortunately Jokers game is not one that can actually be stopped in any really meaningful way. As long as there is a moving player the Joker will find them.
The only way I see them being ”stopped” is simple, just outscore them, they play a spread the floor constant movement game so how do you stop that.
Since he came into the league the opposition has been searching for an answer and not found one yet.
Joker is the Man! He is so talented it is crazy! Dominating the NBA! I love that Nuggets Team and Coach
Jokic shows why it’s so good to practice awkward shots.
Awkward to others, not awkward to Jokic 😁
I think he's also an example of playing by your strengths and improving your weaknesses
Djokic made him look lost. He didn’t know where to go or what to do. He lost his assignments. Look at the three-pointer wide-open that Jokic made. He looked at him and looked back to the basket, never made a move towards Jokic, because he was scared of any passing that he might’ve doneto a cutter, he made wemby look lost
wmby is a kid. a rookie. he will improve for sure
Wemby is a rookie.. Nikola is a champion.. give the young man time to play a while...
Well yes but he is a top 5 or higher defender in the league as a rookie so its not in bad faith
Definitely I feel like Vic made a lot of young player mistakes last night we see them two more times we’ll see if he can adjust
Gordon to Wemby "This is how an agile leopard dunks over a full grown giraffe, hope you go it son" 🤣🤣🔥🔥🔥🔥
Joker is beast on the court. 🇷🇸💪
I would hate to box Jokic into something like that”best halfcourt player of all time”, just because he’s so good in transition because of his vision and passing accuracy. Lol
Absolutely. Just because he's so insane in the halfcourt, its easy to forget that he's basically the best at advancing the ball in transition or running the break himself. Kind of like how Steph is such a good shooter that its easy to overlook that he's one of the greatest ball handlers ever.
Wemby is one of the best generational players ever that got schooled by a horse caretaker who took nba like a 9-5 office job

wemby's got a ton of potential but it's important to remember he's not even old enough to drink yet. Give him a couple of years and he's gonna be a beast
I don't know, I'm not sure he'll perform significantly better after going on a bender.
Yeah he will get so much better in 2-3 years. Btw it always amazes how in usa legal drinking age is 21 when pretty much in everywhere else its 18.
He's old enough in France

In France, he can drink. Don't worry for him.
When we watched Jordan growing up, we knew we were witnessing a legend. We may very well be witnessing a legend in our current day with Jokic. Take note.
Floater from close to freethrow line is nuts. This is why Joker is difficult to guard in play-offs especially. No other big has this particular shot
What a great analysis. Well done 👏👏👏👏
Wemby my deepest condolences
Brilliant analysis and props to both players. Huge respect
Both guys are awesome. Contrast in style is fun to watch!
Calling Wemby the greatest defensive talent ever is a stretch, he’s 7’4” with and even longer wingspan. It’d be weird if he wasn’t getting blocks
In due time Wemby is gonna be a complete force to be reckoned with, dude has supreme talent but like every other PF and Center come to find the answer to Jokic is beyond complex and frustrating. We're all aware by now of his offensive gifts that keep evolving even as he ages, his court vision and his leadership abilities but one important attribute that sometimes gets overlooked is his ability to adapt when pressured and all the while keeping his composure when others might lose their cool and implode. As Joker keeps on keeping on and Wemby evolves over time I'm looking forward to watching these 2 battle.

I was thinking recently about how the response to Wemby is going to have to be a different understanding of space on the court on both the individual and schematic level. This really clarified thar. Great video.
Imagine prime Wemby under Euroleague/FIBA rules where the courts are smaller and offense has less space to use. Wemby is a complete cheat code on defense there

i havent followed the nba in 25 years but the way jokic plays makes it interesting to see these videos about him. it reveals there are much more significant intangible things going on besides scoring and rebounding, that was hidden from me before, partly because i don't know basketball well. but also someone wasn't this skilled at them for it to be apparent imo. anyway
This is a Jokić and Wemby era, as a centers and overall!
Jokara, Jebeni ćale basketa!
His awareness is something I have never seen imo I think he's reading people and knows when someone is going left or right or blocking. Kinda like a mentalist basketball player. He is envisions these plays he anticipates and is almost always right.

Great research and breakdown - quick to the point and highly efficient information flow. Subbed!
Let's not give Wemby any all-time accolades just yet, guys. He is in the middle of this rookie season. That being said, he is a problem for offenses and is changing the game. Let's just see how he adjusts to the inevitable adjustments pro offenses will be making before we give him any HoF votes.
2:20 Wemby tries to kick the ball off an excellent read of his opponent's pass. Wemby's mind is very fast.
People talk about Jokic being the smartest player in history, and Wemby made him prove it.
The Joker vs. The Mountain
Best offense and best denfensive players ever? Omg dude
Good video! Only one small beef: that play shown twice & Joker's speed was emphasized when lumbering in w/a running start from beyond the arc: it was SLOW. Not even fast for him-Joker can be surprisingly agile for a spin move or 1-2 steps, but like with umping, he just does not have the fast-twitch muscle fibers to run quickly or jump high. He is the opposite of Shaq, who at even HEAVIER had the NBA record by touching 12'5".
Does not matter-he is daaaaa-best.
Jokic is Jokic, no comparison, YET for Wemby. I have been going to games here in San Antonio for years as a season ticket holder and from the start of the season until now that 20 year old Wemby has grown a lot as a NBA player. He already had experience as a EU player in which I have played against the Germans when stationed in Germany and it is much tougher in Europe. So with that said, do not compare to Wemby yet it is his first year. Put on weight and more experience and by the age 23 and a good guard to get him the ball when he is open, it will not be the same…. Jokic will still probably light him up but boy, I can’t wait to see it a few years from now when these 2 meet.

Wembanyama has an amazing future ahead of him if he remains healthy. Being agile while being the tallest player in the league doesn’t hurt. Saying he is the greatest shot blocker ever is questionable. Shot blocking stats were not kept until the 73/74 season. He very well may be the greatest though if again he remains healthy. The punishment of an 82 game season can be hard on players and few big men have held up for a long career. Let’s wish him the best.

I think there has to be a rule where you can block a shot! It is crazy! I mean i like to watch Wemby but come on! Joker was the first player with a real answer! Thank you and thumbs up!
It's insane that a player that's almost 7 ft. tall has to create space to get off a shot. What's not insane is that same player using his bulk to push around the much taller player who needs to figure out how to bulk up.
doing a breakdown defense on the best player in the league and he is a rookie.. i Think he is going to be doing alright :)
Wemby glaze AND Jokic glaze in the same video? Uh, yea, cleanup aisle my PANTS!
Jokic has a nice little push-off that might get him in a bit of trouble from time to time.
Jokic was a teacher Wemby was a student this game
I wonder how many other teams will try the same tactics against Victor, or put another way how many in the game even after being shown how to deal with Vic, actually fail to see or appreciate it.
So, let me summarize 8:44 of video: Jokic played smarter than Wembanyama. Nothing new there. All of the NBA have been feeling that love.
An unstoppable force vs an immovable object
Wemby not happy 😂
Realistically he had no issues with wembanyama at all if we’re being honest, still impressive he forced adjustment from a player like Jokic.
Watching Wemby is probably what it felt like to watch Kareem in 1970. I did watch Duncan in 1998 and knew he was already a Hall of Famer.
This will be the matchup to watch for years to come. Then, they'll move on to be the next Shaq and Chuck. Shaq and Chuck will be at the senior center throwing checkers at each other.
You know you’ve arrived (Wemby) when you played arguably the league’s best player as a ROOKIE, and there’s videos analyzing how the best player got the better of the rookie’s defense.
Think about it, we don’t drop videos or talk about…Jaime Jacquez getting taken to school. But Wemby has been such a force, when he gets taken to school…it’s NEWS. It’s a segment on ESPN and talked about by the sports journalists and online on social media.
Thats the attention already Wemby gets as a rookie. He has the makings to actually be a top 5 player ever if he stays healthy and wins some rings.
Honestly more than anything Gordon threw Wemby off, he guarded him and gave him 0 space all game and jokic cooked him on offence. He was really frustrated cos his team mates just weren’t seen as a threat, they’d double team him and press him
