  • Nikola Jokic and Victor Wembanyama just faced off for the second time in an epic battle between an offensive GOAT and a defensive prodigy. As happened the first time they met, the Denver Nuggets got the better of the San Antonio Spurs - so how did Jokic find an answer for Wemby that no one else can?

The prototypes might be Kyrie or Giannis or Shai or Anthony Edwards or, at the five spot, Embiid. However, to paraphrase Red Auerbach: if I were starting to build a team, my first choice from the pool of NBA players would still be Joker. I am a fan (former fan actually because I hate the product nowadays) who thinks that basketball is a team sport and the intelligence is what makes it fun to watch. Why expend needless energy with a monster posterizing dunk when you can make a beautiful pass and make your teammates happy, make the game easy and make your opponents look clueless? Maybe it comes from me being average weight and strength and playing forward at 5-9 and needing every fake in the book to get my own game viable. I never saw that as unathletic. I understand jumping to conclusions is usually bad, but Jokic is the best offensive player ever. He has a super strong argument as the best passer ever, and in recent years he has established himself as one of the best SCORERS ever. Neither of these attributes rely on luck, he is clutch and his passing has a natural flow in the game, nothing he does can be shut down. Did I mention hes also an incredible screener, communicator, and rebounder? His only weakness is bigger or stronger guys competing with him, he struggles a little when he cant feast on players that are the same size or smaller. Basically any time the other team has the physical advantages to bother him (need at least 2 players large enough), it can be a problem for him because he cant activate his scoring game as well, and those big bodies can catch some of his overhead passes. This is only on an individual level though, the best way to stop him from winning is take his teammates off their A game, which he is REALLY good at maintaining

No one yet has really been able to find a “weakness” in his game that is exploitable the whole game.
Which is in itself maybe the issue, instead of looking for any perceived weakness in his game people need to raise their own game to compete.

Yep that’s a decades old concept that you stop the support players you then stop the game plan, as one player cannot score enough points to beat a team all on their own. It was tried against Jordan amongst others, let him score stop the rest. It did have limited success, but very limited.
If you’re a Nuggets fan then fortunately, the rest of the NBA unfortunately Jokers game is not one that can actually be stopped in any really meaningful way. As long as there is a moving player the Joker will find them.
The only way I see them being ”stopped” is simple, just outscore them, they play a spread the floor constant movement game so how do you stop that.

In due time Wemby is gonna be a complete force to be reckoned with, dude has supreme talent but like every other PF and Center come to find the answer to Jokic is beyond complex and frustrating. We're all aware by now of his offensive gifts that keep evolving even as he ages, his court vision and his leadership abilities but one important attribute that sometimes gets overlooked is his ability to adapt when pressured and all the while keeping his composure when others might lose their cool and implode. As Joker keeps on keeping on and Wemby evolves over time I'm looking forward to watching these 2 battle.

Good video! Only one small beef: that play shown twice & Joker's speed was emphasized when lumbering in w/a running start from beyond the arc: it was SLOW. Not even fast for him-Joker can be surprisingly agile for a spin move or 1-2 steps, but like with umping, he just does not have the fast-twitch muscle fibers to run quickly or jump high. He is the opposite of Shaq, who at even HEAVIER had the NBA record by touching 12'5".
    Does not matter-he is daaaaa-best.

Jokic is Jokic, no comparison, YET for Wemby. I have been going to games here in San Antonio for years as a season ticket holder and from the start of the season until now that 20 year old Wemby has grown a lot as a NBA player. He already had experience as a EU player in which I have played against the Germans when stationed in Germany and it is much tougher in Europe. So with that said, do not compare to Wemby yet it is his first year. Put on weight and more experience and by the age 23 and a good guard to get him the ball when he is open, it will not be the same…. Jokic will still probably light him up but boy, I can’t wait to see it a few years from now when these 2 meet.

Wembanyama has an amazing future ahead of him if he remains healthy. Being agile while being the tallest player in the league doesn’t hurt. Saying he is the greatest shot blocker ever is questionable. Shot blocking stats were not kept until the 73/74 season. He very well may be the greatest though if again he remains healthy. The punishment of an 82 game season can be hard on players and few big men have held up for a long career. Let’s wish him the best.

Think about it, we don’t drop videos or talk about…Jaime Jacquez getting taken to school. But Wemby has been such a force, when he gets taken to school…it’s NEWS. It’s a segment on ESPN and talked about by the sports journalists and online on social media.
