I switched to Schaffer synthetic because it’s an amazing oil. I know a guy who uses it and ran a tractor for over three hours bush hogging and realized he had no oil pressure. He too owns a lawn mower repair shop. So he tore the tractor motor apart and found zero damage to his motor which had lost the oil pick up tune. He said he didn’t know how long the motor was starved for oil but at least a couple hours. But I don’t know if it has zinc in it. After the post I’m

What about using regular engine oil and adding some rislone ZDDP? would that work as well? How much would you add?
I guess you could if you had no other option. But oil with zinc is pretty easy to find.
Would Valvoline VR1 racing oil be good to use? I have extra quarts of 20w-50 I could use. It is high zinc oil.
I would not have a problem with using that oil in our onan.
Should the cover to the generator be physically hot enough to burn when the box is closed up?
I would not be surprised when the engine can get to 275 degrees just on the other side
Have to disagree with you on this one Kevin, I have never read it anywhere, where my Onan generator needs a zinc additive. With the minimal use of my Onan I can not justify the cost of $20 a quart oil, I also have never read about an Onan engine have being replaced because of not using a zinc additive, far more 8.1 engines have been replaced v.s. the Onan. Just use the correct API which most off the shelf oil has. I use just straight up 30wt oil. thats what Onan recommends above 32f
It wont say you need zinc but if you pull the Onan oil data sheets it will show it listed there so does Kohler Kawasaki, I just know from past history in the air cooled engine world cam lobe wear has been a problem causing more valve adjustments as standard automotive oils zinc content has been lowered.
My point was to use the correct oil if you have Onan oil available then use it. But if your in a small town that dont then seek out oil made for Air Cooled Engines your camshaft will thank you.
@@ktoutdoor Thanks for the info Kevin, wasnt aware of the oil data sheet about the onan oil containing zinc. If the oil containing zinc was readily available and wasn't so expensive I would use it. Thanks for the info.
An extra $15 to $30 dollar a year insurance on a $2k plus generator is worth it in my estimation.
How many oil this need
2 qts
