You drive just like Steve McQueen. Here is my story of frustration on my Onan. I bought a new 22 Entegra with an Onan 5.5k generator, from the day I bought it, the generator would stop after 8 minutes with both A/C running. The selling dealer in Las Vegas, NV could not fix it because they are not an authorized Onan repair. I took it to Cummins in San Leandro, Ca. They said it need a new fuel pump. A new pump was installed and then it would run a little longer. I took it back to them in March and they said they had to adjust the "hertz", so they did. Next time I used it, it stopped after 1 hour when I ran it at home. I took it back a 3rd time, (each trip is 52 miles oneway from home), I ran it on the way there and then I waited at the dealer for a total of 2:40 hrs and it did not stop. I started to drive back home and after 20 minutes it stopped again. I turned around and left it there at Cummins. Now we'll see if they can find the problem. It's Memorial Day week-end so they will not be able to test it until next Tuesday. By the way Jayco/Entegra which made the motorhome and installed that generator will do nothing for me, because it is Cummins problem and not theirs. I told Cummins about the oil issue I have read on TH-cam and they said never to run it with less oil.

The first thing that I would say, is that your exhaust looks like you’ve been running E85 in it. Doesn’t matter if it was intentional or inadvertent.
Such a thing is you’re definitely getting fuel or wouldn’t be running. It is not very difficult for the little tiny carburetor, drain needle to get clogged and not be able to drain fuel.
The first thing that I would do is disconnect the fuel line and hook it up to a. External fuel source of some clean non-ethanol fuel. Then started up on that and see what happens. That would be before tearing one completely down.
I am a Generac/Kohler/briggs&stratton/0nan/Cummins Technician. For power on time.
The oil level problem which has been previously reported is usually in relation to using the wrong level of quality of oil. If you use OnaMax oil, it will not foam up..
I would bet you a gallon of diesel. The external fuel source would cure the problem. The next step would be draining your fuel, and putting a better grade of fuel in it.
Also note that putting too much fuel stabilizer can cause you problems as well.
The best way to prevent water in your fuel is to keep your fuel filled up.

I have not watched part 2. My guess is one of the following. First guess is clogged fuel filter. Second guess is fuel pump is not working correctly.

That oil looks milky. There is definitely something contaminating the oil. A gasket likely ruptured and is allowing gas or something else into the oil, causing the level to rise on the dipstick. You need to take the fuel line supply side off the fuel pump and verify fuel is getting to the pump. Check again on the outlet side of the pump to make sure gas is being pumped through and past the fuel pump. If gas contaminated oil detonates inside the crankcase, that wouldn't be good.

If you have a Cummins Onan RV QG 5500 LP that starts with starter fluid but won’t start otherwise look at the lower end of your throttle body (not carburetor). If it has two lines connected, a propane line and a second line/tube connected at the lower tubes from the throttle body, one is the propane feed and is coming from the High-pressure Converter LP Liquid (HGJAC), the other small tube/line coming from the lowest throttle body tube going to what was once the fuel/gas valve and is the oil drain may be leaking. Give that tube a little tug to see if it breaks. If it does you found your problem

First place to check is oil level or oil level sensor. I have seen these things start and shut down due to low oil.

When it dies, it sounds like a backfire, and you did mention blackened air cleaner.
Also, if there is a second fuel filter on the chassis, be sure to change it. Onan says it only needs one.

You are supposed to check the oil when it's warm condensation from the exhaust is normal on any internal combustion black smoke would indicate it overich mixture alot of guessing on TH-cam from people that know absolutely nothing other than what they see on forums if they do not know how a carburetor works they should not be touching these things

Why not use the drain tube connected to the right of the fill hole? Place a bowl underneath the drain tube and open the "oil drain valve". BTW, you did NOT drain enough oil! Take it down to the "ADD" line and start.

You're not taking out enough oil, should not be more than 1/4 inch above the add mark on the stick. also on the right side of the of the oil fill there is a T-valve you can open by hand to drain oil into a measuring cup. If oil level is on the full mark you need to take out one pint or 2 cups of oil. You may also take out more (down to the add mark) if needed to get a good run on the gen. Onan is using bad dip stick and the reading is wrong.

@@trustme7731 this is a very common problem for some reason with to much oil and when I say that I mean more than above the add mark it will run for a bit then shut down almost like it ran out of gas. Take the oil down to the add mark and it runs forever. My guess the dip stick is wrong and with that much oil in it it reads to much oil pressure. When you change the oil and you measure out exactly the right amount of oil it’s actually down right at the add mark. This trick worked on mine that kept shutting down like it was starved for fuel.

      1. I never drive my generator.
      2. Oil with water in it is NOT black. It's a milky brown color.
      3. Time (3 months) doesn't make oil black, miles do or hours in the case of a small engine.
      4. If engine oil in a gas engine is black, you waited too long before changing it. Diesel engine oil will be black normally.
      5. I worked in the family service stations at 14. Worked at another for 4 years. I'm the only one that changes the oil in all of my dozens of engines for over 50 years.

Give me an explanation of why you think the engine would run properly with less than the proper amount of oil in it. Every TH-camr is wrong about this solution.
You headed in the right direction with checking the fuel but for some reason you didn't follow through to the logical culprit, the fuel pump although there are of sources for this problem. You ran the diagnostics and then ignored the answer.

    • @trustme7731

Also, spraying carb cleaner into the throat of the carb does nothing. A dirty carb is dirty on the inside where you can't see it. It needs to be needs to be disassembled for this.
