- Onan service teck told me that your Onan slip rings should be cleaned ever 150 hours of use.
Dirty slip rings also shorten the life of your carbon brushes as they began to arc more, this arcing causes higher resistance making the voltage regulator to work harder and that leads to premature voltage regulator failure. A new regulator will cost your $500.00 up to $625.00

Oh yes! Been doing a bunch of maintenance on mine this last week… was supposed to go on a trip and didn’t work out so the rig is fueled up and ready to go! New oil, filter, Transynd 668, filter, air filter, and dex cool (half the system I do it in sections not all at once) and radiator cap!

Great MacGyver work around! Just did it, like you showed, on my Onan 5500 and it worked well. Changed out my control board as well...was getting repeated shutdowns with code 36 (useless code) so bought new control board from ASAP which will only shutdown on loss of generator output power or oil pressure. Removal of the control board made easy acces to the slip rings. Thanks again Kevin.
