  • A lot of people are excited to see an FE6 remake and want to see it combined with an FE7 remake. I think they're wrong to want that, and this video explains why.

      I think you are the man & super cool & super smart. I'd like it all on one game, .. if it could be done well. Either is a win for me. FE7 has always been one of my favorite games ever. Remaking FE6 would be incredible for for me, because I've never played it much. I think I'm going to like the originals the best, always. The fact "they" are even remaking these games (and FE9 & 10) is the biggest win in my video game life. These are my favorite video games ever. I see you, Mangs, Chaz & Friends play older, FE games. I wish to play these games one day! At least I get to watch you guys play it! Anyways, .. Much Love @Mekkkah and friends, and keep up the great content @Mekkah !! ⚔️ 777

      Separating the two wouldn't serve any greater purpose other than risking one not being made due to potentially bad sales. Yes, back when making those games only required spritework and talking heads. Making both for 60 bucks a pop isn’t profitable for them at all when we expect full voice acting, fantastic music remasters, and beautiful graphics. The first argument doesn't make a lot of sense. A project is budgeted according to the scope of it. A development company isn't going to accept a contract to make a game that is meant to represent the size to two games without the budget to go along with it. And even if somehow they did, it would be on the publisher to provide the second half of the contract insofar as handling payroll. To the development company, it is quite inconsequential if the publishers don't agree to finish the game because the developers are only going to work for what they are being payed for. It isn't necessarily uncommon for projects to be abandoned halfway through and a development studio has to be prepared for this either way. There are also advantages for merging two IPs like being able to retain directorship instead of having different lead designers from potentially two different companies that can make the games feel very different. The wait time thing is just flat wrong. There is no way it is easier or faster to negotiate two separate contracts than just one. Devs like big contracts. Its guaranteed work. The only advantages for releases two different title like your suggesting is being able to make use of some kind of technological advantage (like putting the second game on the latest console) or satiating the fan-base incrementally as you suggest. I don't think however, there is going to be an issue of coming short with new FE installations/remakes. So as far as it being "better" for developers. I think you are totally coming up short. I have other gripes but this is my main complaint.

    • @ZygonCannar
      @ZygonCannar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Let's say you're right and the process behind the production is more complicated than it looks. I don't think that negates my point that a dual remake costs more time and money to make than a single remake. Doesn't matter whether it's 1 or 2 production teams, the point is someone needs to pay people to put more time and effort into it. If the consumer pays for it, the game will be more expensive. I don't think the developer is going to pay the difference out of his own pocket. But it has to come from somewhere.
      If you make them as two games, you get an extra $60 per copy from the customer.

    • @ZygonCannar
      @ZygonCannar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      @@Mekkkah The point about the games aren't that connected? Sure, but that could be remedied. It's obvious FE7 was rushed out the door, but a remake could easily pull a SoV and design it better this time. The writing/scene team aren't going to be busy the entire development cycle, it might only add 33% to the time and 60% to the cost, because while FE6 is getting finalized, they can be working on FE7. Which brings me to my next point.
      The 'double time' argument as well. Not all teams are fully busy during the entire development process. If FE6 by itself would take 2 years, the art/model team might only take 18 months to brainstorm what the style would be, make the base textures, models, attack animations and map assets, and finalize them? Well, a majority of those could be reused, because unlike FE4+5, the games have a lot more overlap in setting and mechanics, it wouldn't just be 'double work', it might only take them 9 months to convert the work they already did into a whole second game.
      You also assume that sales would still be good for a single game, which might not be true, it might flop on launch due to people like me who don't see it as a value and I buy it used or on sale when it's more of the value I personally put it at.
      More value is something that puts fence sitters into action. Even if someone has never played FE6/7, if they heard about this remake, looked up the original and were like "Wait this game is only 10-15 hours long?", they might simply just pass on it. It's a lot more attractive to say. "Well it's two games, so it's actually 30 dollars each, that's a lot more reasonable" and suddenly you have sales you didn't have before.

    Okay here is my counter argument. The originals were semi rushed GBA games with not that much content. (They came out only a year apart) 40 dollars on the 3ds was a more acceptable price point for a single old game remake. They will have to blow my socks off with a major overhaul to make me feel like 60 is worth it for a game that can be ran through in an afternoon.
    You really think people are going to buy a game that on a first playthrough has maybe 15 hours of content for 60 dollars after Three Houses hundreds of hours? You really think it will even take a quarter of Three Houses' budget to remake any of the GBA games? You assuming all games take the same size budget is a huge pitfall. Even back when GBA games were 30-40 dollars, they were worried about content value, so PoR/RD were much longer to account for their 60 dollar price tag. Those games are beefy enough to be stand alone releases.
    So I heavily disagree with you, it's not asking too much. I want value for my purchases.

    A *REMAKE* can be done in such a way that with a few modifications (especially when combining a prequel to a sequel) that it won't ruin an overall story. So what if the parents and children faced different threats? Both threats were EQUALLY threatening to the continent of Elibe during their respective times. All it would take is some story telling polishing to fix that, and in regards to weapons being sealed up and discovered, that could also be fixed. Like, these are overlooked details to be sure when comparing the stories and timing, but a remake could easily patch this up and the Nintendo Switch Console should be capable of handling that load. Not only that, thanks to FE7's support endings, some endings suggest that the children in FE6 are directly related to specific or non-specific characters. Like Wolt, Rebecca's son, could've had 3 different dads based on 3 different traits. Boom, IS gets to keep the parent children, past to future, link trend that the fan base has come to have fun with as a feature all on its own (with the exception of cannon pairings like Pent and Louise, or Nino and Jaffar). Even the TACTICIAN in FE7 could easily be made out as Elibe's avatar choice. Whether or not that Avatar gets to continue into the events of FE6 could go either way in my mind tbh.
    I mean look at FE Gaiden, or Shadows of Valentia. They introduced ORIGINAL characters that had nothing to do with the original game, and it did absolutely nothing to hurt the integrity of the overall story. Hell, Berkut became a fan favorite (along with Rinea despite not really being relevant to anyone but Berkut). The potential is easily there and nowhere near as bad of an idea as I feel you make it out to be.

    • @vanjagalovic3621

      Well you'd need to rewrite FE6 or 7 for the story to work and like Mekkah said there's only really 4 shippable characters (5 if you count Lyn, but she isn't the confirmed mother of anyone) that have children that appear in FE6, so even if they do a transfer thing like they did in FE4 they wouldn't be able to transfer a lot of things besides skills and affinityes since FE6 wasn't balanced around children like FE4 was. It's just that combining FE6 & 7 is more work than it's worth. But if they do remake them together I hope you're ready for Lyn cameos, flashbacks and nonesense, lots of nonesense

    -They can easily combine the games and still charge a reasonable price. The Crash N.sane trilogy had three games and was still at an average prize.
    -It really wouldn't take that long to remake one game when they're already done with the other. Remakes are inherently a lot faster to produce, especially with these two games. They still mostly hold up, so the changes would mostly come in the way of improved graphics and some minor tweaks in story and gameplay here or there. Combine that with the fact that they could reuse a lot of graphics and animations, and they could release them, if seperate, within half a year of each other. That means that the wait really wouldn't be increased all that much.
    On the contrary, releasing them seperately would make reused assets stick out a lot more and people would critisize it. They could make new assets at that point, but that would mean that we'd have to wait much longer, so seperating them doesn't really cut the waiting all that much.
    -Just because the stories aren't completely interwoven doesn't mean that there is no reason to combine them. Again, the N.sane trilogy. You could play each of those games seperately, yet they were combined.
    -In regards to story I can see your point. However, a lot of the problems of FE 7's narrative are rooted deep in the plot. We'd end up with either:
    •FE 7's story, mostly unchanged and still problematic.
    or:
    •A heavy rewrite to make it work.
    The thing is that I just don't see how either option would be made worse by combining the games. The plotholes would still be there in case of the first option. If they sell it seperately, it's still just as problematic. I'd honestly think it would be worse if they seperated them in an attempt to hide the problems in the story, kind of how FE 7 alteady tries to distract you as well.
    -They could combine them without the shipping. Honestly, I think most people don't really care about it anyway. They would just have FE 6 play out the way it already does, regardless of what you did in FE 7. I don't see why you make it sound like they couldn't do that.
    And a lot of these points aren't even an argument for why a combined remake
    "is a bad idea". You're really just trying to show why it would be less of "good idea", disregarding the benefits such as a much better consumer experience where you can get both games together instead of buying them seperately or the fact that the combination would take up much less space digitally, since all assets would otherwise have to be saved twice.
    My point is, I disagree.
    And thank you for everyone who suffered through that wall of text 👆

    Before Fe3H I’d agree. However, now that I’ve seen Nintendo is willing to put in time and money for a loooooong feature rich FE I can see a Fe6+7 totally being feasible.
    Both 6 and 7 had bad pacing, they could definitely lean out both and squeeze it into a 40 hour game. Some coupling being significant (shooting out kids for the next segment) and others being less impactful (maybe we can see Raven as a rando NPC if he doesn’t pair up a village you visit can have one of your old characters inhabit it, etc, etc).
    As for plot stuff.... sucks but we’re not getting great writing from the franchise anymore. I’ll be happy with cohesive/serviceable with good support writing.

      @mee7er 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Totally subjective of course. I’m just throwing in my two cent.
      I think there’s been a pretty big dip in overall quality of the writing after the Ike games. Lot of weird plot holes or glaring leaps of logic. I enjoyed how different the same event is depicted in FE3H. They did a great job showing your the house leader’s reasoning behind their action. Most of the problem I have is with Bayleth and their action/lack of action in a lot of situations.
      As for the feature rich thing. I think FE3H is super feature rich. The level of customization is insane. Any character can be anything. You can influence their growth rate, assign classes, equip gear, equip crests even how they look post game. There’s crafting, fishing, battalions, the social aspect is really dense, etc, etc.

    What I find interesting, is that it is highly unlikely for them to leave the stories of both untouched.
    If they were to remake one, they'll probably remake both, and in reverse order, too. They will release 7 first, probably patch up the story, and allow some small changes to persist to the 6 remake, most likely modifier growths to Roy, for example.
    6 would probably also get more story details and links with 7, making both more cohesive.
    So the plots for both would be worked on at the same time, and a lot of assets would most likely be reused between the two.
    Its not impossible to see a sub 1 year gap between the two games on that scenario.
    While I agree that having it in 1 cartridge is just bad, a short wait between releases, alongside a collectors edition as a method of getting both when they are both out would be cool.

    I'm pretty sure most people would be fine so long as the games had some kind of connectivity in which what you do in 7 can influence 6. I also think that there are elements of FE7 and 6 which could be used to tie the two together in a way that makes them feel more continues such as the theme of Human's and Dragon's living together with Ninian and Eliwood's relationship as well as the events surrounding Desmond's assassination attempt on Zephiel. Those things could be better expanded on honestly. While I agree that it's possible they may not see the potential changes they could make in terms of writing to connect and the games and improve FE 7 writing, I don't think that is reason enough to say a joint remake would be a bad idea. I also highly doubt it would take THAT much longer for the two games to be made even if they were on the same cartridge since the games would most certainly be sharing a majority of assets with one another. Fates came out only 4 years after Awakening and that game had 3 seperate scenarios. As for the pairings, as past remakes they would most likely be adding new characters to the either stories even if we don't really need any more.
    Really, the only major issue with a combined remake is pricing, which would be solved via separate but linkable games like you said.
    I also would like them to including some elements from Hasha no Tsurugi to further the Dragon and Human relationship aspect but not many other people like that manga so if anything I'd like to see them as DLC units.

    No writers need to be hired, no new music to be composed, no artist to hire. Speaking of art, a remake would most likely use 3d models, which are infinitely easier to recycle and modify than hand drawn characters, or they can even recycle parts of the old art.
    Although individual games would be great, I don’t think it would be worth the value, considering they couldn’t possibly add enough content to make it worth the 60$. The new fire emblems may not be my favorite, but you can’t deny that they have a huge margin more content than old FE’s. Because old FE’s were much more linear and focused on story. New FE’s branch off a lot and are more about characters.

Lack of shipping mechanics may have been a deciding factor of why /some/ players may not have liked it, but it was a comparatively minor one to expect considering it's a remake of a 25-year-old game and doesn't even include an avatar (which is one of the biggest reasons many people like shipping mechanics - so they can ship their self-inserts with other units). Fates is also a case where that mechanic was shoehorned in after the fact and done badly, so I think the even the FE shippers can see the issues with including it in a pre-established game that never had it. also there can easily be some characters who's kids you can't influence and those that you can in the same game in fact it could add a bit to the second gen with some characters being guaranteed to appear the same while others you have more control of. also with enough tweaking 7 can better tie into 6 and the writing fixed to make a bit better sense
    if it's something closer to shadow dragon where they are bringing an old game to a new console and shining it up warts and all then yes keeping them separate would be better though

Plus they could easily then incorporate those children bonuses system from the older games depending on which characters hook up. Like imagine Roy is faster but slightly weaker if Eliwood romances Lyn for example, or they have unique perks and weapons at the start, etc. Also these arguments where Roy never heard of legendary weapons etc, wtf? They could easily correct that stuff in a remake...why would they ever make a strict story remake if things don't add up? Its like you dismiss everything as if the writers can't fix anything because their imagination ran out?

    Your budgeting/accounting is uneducated imo; it seems to be the foundation of your argument. The cost of a game is **not** proportional to the amount of content in it: marketing, customer support, distribution, engine development, concept and preprod, support functions like HR, project management, recruiting... Overall, ~85% of game developement cost is not dependent on the amount of content. That's why we see so many DLCs these days.
    Marketing will be the one calling the shots. Does Nintendo have two slots in their planning for Fire Emblem and what is the opportunity cost for Intelligent Systems not working on FE Heroes? Market is saturated. Will Nintendo be able to sell 2 x 3 millions units with 2 releases? Because if they hit lower sales, independently of development cost, Nintendo used some marketing bandwidth / attention budget that could have gone towards Mario, Smash, Metroid, Zelda, DK, Splatoon, Pokemon...Nintendo is structured to produce a few big hits, not a lot of small ones; that's what killed Advance Wars, Wario, .Pilot wings, Star Fox... Nintendo has no time to make lots of niche games anymore.

    An example of these are the Guy and Karel plot, Lyns fate, Wallace cleaning of the bandits that destroyed Lorca tribe, as well as the backstories of Fe6 characters tha could have some relevabce in fe 7 like Geitz and Gesse, beside others.
    Perhaps also a good way to do this would be like Elibean Nights with a number of interim sidestories.

    I don't buy the explanation that pricing a double remake would be awkward. In fact, I'd argue the exact opposite.
    Remaking one of them and charging $60 for it when the original retailed at $30 about 20 years ago would be the questionable move.
    The only game I can think of that was a full price console remake of an originally handheld game was the Switch's Link's Awakening.
    Also, FE6 and 7 are intentionally minimalist games. No children, skills, pair-ups, and only a minor support system. Modern gamers are more used to the fancy bells and whistles of Awakening onward. A simpler experience would be a harder sell for a $60 game. Adding additional content (2 games) would be a more appropriate path to $60 than adding in an unwelcome pair-up mechanic or some such nonsense.

    • @TriAzF
      @TriAzF 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      FE11 and FE12 were remakes that were priced somewhat highly because they were remakes, not releases. If they remake FE7 for example and enhance the graphics, possibly making it 3D like three houses, add full voice acting, possibly tweak certain mechanics or stats, enhance the UI and menus etc, I think selling it for $60 is perfectly acceptable as all of these would cost a lot more money than the creation of the original games. This is assuming that they actually Remake FE6 and FE7 and not just releasing them, which is a very different thing. If your talking about re-releases where they essentially keep it the same game, maybe enhance the graphics but don’t noticeably change them and release it for consoles than I would agree with you that $60 for both in one cartridge would be pretty fair, since they wouldn’t need to spend as much money creating it.

    • @plentyofpaper
      @plentyofpaper 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TriAzF I was assuming a full 3D remake as you were describing. And honestly, thinking about it more, that's really just not the direction to take it.
      Creating more than 1 3D game engine per generation is wasteful, so if it were to come on the Switch, battle animations would be pulled straight from 3 houses. The animation design philosophies simply don't match. GBA remakes need Warrior's torsos to spin like turbo-charged washing machines, Swordmasters to leave extraneous after images, Generals to spin around axes the size of mages at dizzying speeds, Hero's needlessly tossing their greatswords into the sky just to leap up and bring them down, etc. And then the hit needs to freeze the image in place for dramatic effect, particularly to match up with the high note in FE7s battle music.
      Then, that's the animation set that needs to be used for remakes of 6-8, as they share that artistic design. That many games is enough to fill an entire console, leaving no room for a new FE game.
      This will be particularly awkward, as they all share a minimalist design. The addition of a full skill system, pair-ups, complex class system, assigning classes at base camp, etc. would also go against the design philosophy. The GBA games were a step back in complexity compared to 4 and 5, designed to clean up the bloat left over and return to a strong foundation. Adding more than say, a simple branched promotion (like FE8) plus a character skill and a class skill would detract from the game.
      So, now I'm against a full-scale remake altogether (despite 7 being a strong candidate for best game ever made in my mind.)
      I think the model to follow would be the one set by the upcoming Advance Wars 1+2 on the Switch. You can keep true to the original design in that manner, while keeping the games distinct from the newer entries in the series. Pairing 6 and 7 together would also raise the awkward issue of what to do with 8, which would be about half the game. This style of remake at $20 each would be the correct way to go. And honestly, I'd take any of these over an equivalent full scale remake.
      The truth is, there's really just not a whole lot of work you can put into the remake of these that wouldn't make the end product inferior to the originals. Put in the quality of life touches like pinning enemy movements and swapping weapons with X+Y, make a few balance tweaks here and there, improve the graphics (but keep in line with the original style) and of course fix the support system, and that's about all that can be done.

    Not gonna lie, I clicked because of Lyn in the thumbnail.
    About the games, though? Well, after Three Houses, I'm way more excited about a more political story than fighting gods or dragons, which means I wish they focus on a Genealogy remake and don't care about a FE6 or FE7 remake at all. Not that I hate the games, I just love how the GBA games look and play to this very day. Instead of remakes, I wish Nintendo release FE6, 7 and 8 for download on the Switch, or a pack with the 3 games.
