The Miata was definitely a lot of fun, and the seats are super good, as well as the engine. That engine is awesome. But, I never got the adrenaline shakes after driving it. I got those shakes after one one test drive of the VN. That car is so visceral and entertaining. I have the option of moving to an ND2 soon, but I’m choosing the VN because it is just so much fun.
@@MrSamwiseable no I am not. I love the Veloster N. I like having something different. And for the price of a RS, I know many other better cars out there. The Veloster is almost half the cost of a RS.
7:30 "the miata uses a larger range of that pedal travel" How does that work exactly? I don't understand how one clutch engages so much faster or slower than another when the basic principle is still the same, two friction plates coming into contact. Where's the extra travel?
grab a pencil .. hold it at one end with thumb and forefinger of each hand, very close together. holding the lower still, move the pencil with the upper like a lever. now move the upper hand to the middle of the pencil and do the same .. you have to move your fingers much further to get the same amount of movement in the top end of the pencil. The way that the linkage is set up can change the amount of pedal travel required to get the same amount of throw out bearing travel in the clutch assembly. Short travel clutches may take a bit of practice to get used to, but for more "spirited" driving, they are desirable as there is less downtime while shifting between gears due to less physical distance traveled.
In South Florida at the Hyundai dealer they have Veloster Turbos for 29-30k mark. There’s no way anyone is getting an N for 30k flat especially with markups
I bought mine in homestead Hyundai for 28.125$ before before taxes. But i bought before it is starting to get all this attention so maybe i got lucky but i found one took 5 months but its possible. I tried buying a type R now that was a nightmare. Performance pack as well.
N Style motorsports racing I was at Rick Case Hyundai and Acura in Plantation when I was buying my car and just happened to take a look at a few Turbos on the lot and the cheapest was 27k absolutely insane. Good buy though hope it’s treating you well
This was my question six weeks ago! As you know, your RF mx-5 video made me finally decide on the new RF i have now. I think the thing I did not like about the N, in comparison, was the understeer when you take an unknown curve without power. It really needs the electronic differential to be engaged to bring you around a turn with confidence. My R53 mini 2006, with a clutch LSD option, felt stable gliding around a turn with no power, and super tight and roller coaster like when I pressed the gas and it locked up. The N needs constant acceleration to feel great. The mazda could literally remove the engine and handle safely and calmly. Balance and weight I guess.
I drove both and felt that the Miata suspension was too soft and had too much body roll for me. The Veloster N felt planted on the ground no matter how I tossed it around the corner, and you can always adjust the suspension settings by push of a button.
Mazda needs to stop screwing around and sell a Miata coupe. I don't care about convertibles, give me a roof for safety, quiet, and a bigger trunk. Make it look like the RF and I'll buy it.
Great video... So I have a Veloster N for work, wife has XC40, and my personal fun car is a W204 C63 AMG. Am i crazy for wanting to replace the C63 for a ND2 club/recaro pkg????
Mr. Biermann and his colleagues at Hyundai deserve a basket full of Kudos for the Veloster N. If I wanted a near track ready toy off the showroom floor it would be the Veloster. But for those of us who think the dictionary definition of a "sports car" should include a photo of an MG or an Austin Healey 3000, the MX-5 is the better choice.
59 Kilograms I have no clue what you are talking about. The Veloster N just won that didn’t it? Good. It’s a great affordable fun car. I’ve driven the i30N (basically the same car) and it’s brilliant.
Awesome video Matt. I as a person who drives a 2015 Mustang GT on weekends and daily drive a 2003 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V, both 6sp manuals, would choose the Miata. As much as I like turbos, I think your points about the Miata are spot on.
Yup, the Miata is just that kinda car. Watch YT reviews and you’ll quickly notice that no other car generates more giggles, smiles, laughter and just general driving “glee” than Mazda’s endearing little 2,400 lb. roadster. You can always count on an MX-5 for outright, unbridled laughter. If my dog died, I’d take a spin in a Miata, too!
Well, I tried to "try" a Veloster N. Unfortunately, here in Canada, Hyundai told me that they only sell the Veloster N performance package. Also, they do not have any Veloster N to try in all Quebec. They told me if you are lucky you can probably try a used one in a concessionnaire Hyundai. However, we don't know which one in Quebec who can possibly have one. How, I'm supposed to got a idea of a car if I can't try it? This is more insane when you take in the equation that the car is only manuel. I need to try the car to see if the clutch and shifter please me and everything else. Like how the car handle the curves etc. PLUS, because we got ONLY the performance package in Canada (Hyundai told me) the car start at 35k with taxes and everything the car is 43k. It's really expensive. For 7k less I can get a WRX. 268 HP and all wheel drive. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the car or Hyundai. It's just really frustrating. Thanks to wrxfan I can enjoy at least the Veloster N at home. Good video as always my friend.
It's not about the speed, it's about the drive. That's why I haven't traded my 2016 Miata for the Veloster N. The N is great but not greater than Miata.
Just coming from Engineering Explained to Matts Channel and get them in a double again. It`s a good evening so far :-) - By the way: Isn`t the answer always the Miata?
Love my ND Miata but I did test drive the Veloster N and it is a absolute blast to drive. If I didn't have the Stinger, definitely would've bought the Veloster N as a second vehicle. I just wish Hyundai would bring the Elantra GT N to the States, love the styling so much more than the Veloster.
EE you got it spot on with the Velostar, I'm in the UK so have theUK version which is different, but your points are spot on. Never driven a Mx-5 but hope to own one , one day
I've had three Miatae, I'm an old goat, but I've been sliding around and dancing with these cars like a hooligan for over 300,000 miles, I don't think I could go back to FWD. I've read where Miatas get the most "reckless driving" citations than any other car and I understand why.
I've had a much better time on the track in a car with auto rev-matching. That being said, the Miata is such a fun car to drive and can be flogged through the corners in the stock format. The trade-off still puts the Miata ahead of the N as a pure driver's car.
I would take the Veloster N easily. It's a more practical daily car in every way, has more power, and sounds better. All those things would push it over the Miata's one advantage: having an open top.
I've had fwd and rwd sports cars, and I prefer rwd handling dynamics by a wide margin. Miata would be the obvious choice for me, although I'd immediately be looking for a way to bridge that horsepower gap.
I digress...Can i mention that you guys have a similar natural rapport to the Straight Pipes? Good collaboration. Yes.the Miata ND is very good. Notice in this video the circular motion the Miata has over rough bumps: the rear is out of step with the front. Visualize, if there was an imaginary rod driven straight through from the grille to the trunk, ithe body rotates (front and rear out of sync) around that rod as you go down unsmooth roads. Regular cars go up and down relative to bumps. And the test Miata RF is the top spec, top up, which should be more solid and controlled. May this explain why the anti-roll bars are compliant, and Miata NDs lean so much? What I mention is evident in this and other You Tube test videos. The Mazda engine revs great, but it should be able to match the Veloster N's performance, right? Similar price range as Veloster...and fourth gen for Miata. The Veloster N looks like an SUV parked next to the MIata. For a second gen effort, Hyundai has hit a home run with the Veloster N. Both cars could hsve more interesting interiors. Basic black in a small car is claustrophobic, and the Veloster R-Spec has a better interior color scheme, for less money than the N, IMO...but both Miata and Veloster could be vastly improved. Veloster N wins on infotainment, audio performance, cargo space, passenger space. Miata wins on open air motoring. I've test driven both, and borrowed friend's cars for a few hours...and I'm undecided. Maybe a used Porsche Cayman or Boxster in the similar price range?
If I had to only have one car to drive I would pick the N. I love the noise and the hatchback is much more practical on a daily basis. Fortunately I am able to have more than one car so I have a '19 Soul Red RF in my garage. I wish it sounded better but it is a joy to drive at any speed and gorgeous to boot.
Let's face it, if you own a more pragmatic vehicle already and you want a fun toy; buy the Mazda. If you need a vehicle to use as your only daily driver, then buy the Hyundai. It's just going to be more pragmatic.
As someone that owns a veloster N, my thoughts are that its an awesome car that is super quick and nimble; however, if you value a drivers car search elsewhere. It's a very numb car where the clutch, steering and shifter absolutely feel like a video game rather than a car. I miss my FRS everyday(my previous car that was written off) and everyday I drive my '18 STI and my fiance takes the velo I realize how much the inputs matter in these cars as a daily.
1/2 sec 0-60 difference is actually quite drastic. The VN is also FWD. Do a roll race a watch the miata get pooped on. That's what matters to most people. A very small percentage of people actually track the car or do autocross. Autocross is the only kind of race where the miata would win. To me, it comes down to what you're in the market for. The miata is also far smaller and less practical. Side note; it would've been nice to see you in each car talking about pros and cons. Rather, you drive the miata the entire time and explain why you like it better over the VN.

7:30 "the miata uses a larger range of that pedal travel"
How does that work exactly?
Yeah, most Hyundai dealers have about a ~5k markup on the N from what a rep at one told me.
N Style motorsports racing I was at Rick Case Hyundai and Acura in Plantation when I was buying my car and just happened to take a look at a few Turbos on the lot and the cheapest was 27k absolutely insane. Good buy though hope it’s treating you well
Here in california their listed right at MRSP. No one should be paying more than mrsp
@@Ezero8 that is just absurd we need oversight like Canada if we did I be driving a type R.
I was torn between these two, ended up with a new miata st by end of 2020. Thanks for all your videos and reviews for both cars.
Mazda leans too much in turns...
I drove both and felt that the Miata suspension was too soft and had too much body roll for me. The Veloster N felt planted on the ground no matter how I tossed it around the corner, and you can always adjust the suspension settings by push of a button.
Miata teaches you to drive very well
Two of my favorite car guys in one video = perfect!!
The crossover I didn't know I needed.
Nice to see you work together!!
best anime crossover 2019
Mazda needs to stop screwing around and sell a Miata coupe. I don't care about convertibles, give me a roof for safety, quiet, and a bigger trunk. Make it look like the RF and I'll buy it.
Great video...
So I have a Veloster N for work, wife has XC40, and my personal fun car is a W204 C63 AMG. Am i crazy for wanting to replace the C63 for a ND2 club/recaro pkg????
I love my RF
Nice hearing the opinions
Jason's Matt impression was hysterical.
What about 0-130? Can the Mazda hold up, or does the N pull away?
It starts to pull away, not too much but definitely.
I love the partnership between my two favorite content creators! Give me the Miata hardtop convertible! Love it! Thanks Matt for the video!
I completely agree with both of you!
59 Kilograms And why is that?
59 Kilograms I have no clue what you are talking about. The Veloster N just won that didn’t it? Good. It’s a great affordable fun car. I’ve driven the i30N (basically the same car) and it’s brilliant.
Got my 2017 rf for $22k. Amazing car
Was about to say.. 'entry level price range' @ $39K Muricans doing better that thought
Awesome video guys, Great collaboration 😁👍🏿
Awesome video Matt. I as a person who drives a 2015 Mustang GT on weekends and daily drive a 2003 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V, both 6sp manuals, would choose the Miata. As much as I like turbos, I think your points about the Miata are spot on.
My dog just died and this is the first time I have laughed in weeks. Thanks for that.
COOL Veloster N vs. 2019 Miata - What's the Most Fun for 30k?
Tuned or Stuffed turbo Abarth 124 Spider is better?
Different. Better or not depends on what you want.
I sold my 09 mazdaspeed3 for my 18 mx-5. Only thing I miss is the turbo. Hoping to get some boost soon.
My Wife has had 2 NDs, an ND1 and ND2(30AE) and we put a muffler delete on, to make the Exhaust sound great!
Oh that wide angle lens makes the MX5 look massive!
It's not about the speed, it's about the drive. That's why I haven't traded my 2016 Miata for the Veloster N. The N is great but not greater than Miata.
Engineering explain+Subaru WRX fan=perfect
Hopefully you guys can do something like Top Gear road trip.
Just coming from Engineering Explained to Matts Channel and get them in a double again. It`s a good evening so far :-) - By the way: Isn`t the answer always the Miata?
Spot on with the Matt Launch laugh.
If you once saw this silly face in the center between the two, you can't overlook it anymore.
Saw these two along with Chris Fix at SEMA last year. It's great to see them doing a video together!!
EE you got it spot on with the Velostar, I'm in the UK so have theUK version which is different, but your points are spot on. Never driven a Mx-5 but hope to own one , one day
Didn’t even drive the Veloster. I think your comparison in this video should include driving it as well.
Looks like a face when the sun glares in the middle of the Miata lol.
I've had fwd and rwd sports cars, and I prefer rwd handling dynamics by a wide margin. Miata would be the obvious choice for me, although I'd immediately be looking for a way to bridge that horsepower gap.
@ 5:58 that face in the middle looks scary,,whats with that centre console,
Those are the removable cup holders. They’re piano black so they give off a reflection that imitates eyes.
No one prefer FWD.

:) I got my 17 brand new for 25k OTD. Traded my modded 15STI for it, couldn’t be happier.
Wow this new Veloster actually looks freakin cool! I remember how ugly the first Veloster was, I wouldnt have touched even with a wooden stick.
Yeah i got the base turbo in red and black it's very nice to look at and fun on the roads
What about a metal stick...
This was great.
Nd2 or s2000 though?
Miata will be a classic in the future
