all good tips! Funny enough I have been recording myself doing some alpha gas mining earlier this week. Since the price of gas has gone up and will stay up for awhile, I figured it would be a good time to make a video on it.
I had a Retriever fit that had 27k ehp and the fit was tested by CODE themselves. The ship was in a 0.6 system and they threw six Thrashers at it. The last Thrasher fired its last shot and killed it when their Thrasher popped. CODE threw six ships at it because I gave them the fit ahead of time but most CODE enforcement agents will only throw three (maybe four) Thrashers at a Retriever in a gank, in which my fit would honestly survive. It was way tankier than CODE expected and they were impressed by it. I had a Procurer fit that almost pushed 110k ehp fit, but I can't find it anymore.
Procurer is best mining ship. I bought Retriever after owning a Procurer, because I wanted to make fewer trips to the station. The Retriever is handicap, because it does not have enough mid slots and I found out that you can mine just as fast with
I agree! The fact the procurer can have a set of 5 mining drones working can put it ahead of the retriever in yield and still have 5 light drones as back up vs pirates.
Regarding the Alpha Venture: there's absolutely no reason to not use T1 shield resistance rigs on it. They would increase the price by 50-100k at best, and would offer a lot of extra EHP against belt rats. Also, it's a good habit to get into rigging even your cheapest ships with SOMETHING. That amount of isk can be made with a few clicks of Project Discovery.
I just wanted to show the most bare bones & functional version of the venture especially for alpha newbros. Rigs aren't going to completely make or break this fit. Depends on your local rat damage type and if you think 20% more isk is worth roughly 20% more tank on a ship designed to be expendable. You bring up good points and especially with the drone change right around the corner and the resist could help a semi-afk miner survive in a belt a tiny bit longer. Thanks for the comment!
If you are mining within 9 jump or so from Jita I would recommend a Procurer. But if you are in a quiet part of space and zkillboard shows no recent ganks than you can can definitely get a retriever!
When I started EvE originally I came to kick ass and blow up ships, when I left EvE, I had a Hulk, Mack, Skiff, Prowler, Orca, Fenrir and my own POS for BP research and refining....lol, and I fell in love with mining, weird!!!
So, I thumbed up, here's my comment, and on the strength of this first video of this channel that I viewed just now I have subscribed. I've seen other EVE Online videos, and somehow this one really resonated with me. Maybe its where I am as a new gamer (since November 2020) or maybe its the presentation, who knows? But it was a good one for me. One suggestion though: make sure your audio portion has sufficient volume for the viewer. I first viewed it on my tablet, and heard it okay. Come here to my laptop, and the volume doesn't carry for some reason, even though I checked and volume in the playback and on the laptop are turned up to the max.
You wasted a lot of time on the other barges, should have just promoted the procurer. Best barge period, let alone for solo miners. It can also be a formidable combatant. My first pvp kill was when I was in a procurer.

Thanks, that help fit my Venture a lot better, mainly as I was using standard Miner 1 yielding 1.3m3/s before the upgrade. Yet, I see that my EP-S Gaussian Mining Laser only yield 2.4 m3/s while it's 3.0 for you, a 25% increase. Is there a particular skill I need to upgrade ? I'm an Alpha player btw and Mining is maximized at level 4. From level 4 to 5 I should only expect a 5% increase, right ?
I did have Astrogeology leveled up at the time which gives an additional 5% yield but thats an Omega skill. For an Alpha, your best skills to increase a Venture's yield is getting *'Mining'* to IV (which you have), get *'Mining Upgrades'* IV (allows for the T2 lasers and T2 upgrade in the low), and dont forget *'Mining Frigate'* since each level increase yield by 5% too for mining. Hope this helped!
Procs are the middle ground. All rounder, tanky enough for low level rats and decent ore capacity at 12K m3. EDIT : My favourite workhorse until I can pilot a Porpoise and eventually an Orca. For an Alpha, I recommend saving up for a Praxis and fit it to the brim with 3 cargo expansion rigs and 6 mining lasers and a tractor beam.
@@eventon9372 Yeah, I used that Praxis after I saw someone mining using a Rokh once in hisec when I was still a lowly Alpha. 3 cargo expansion rigs, in the low slot, 5 cargo expansions as well as a CPU and a mining laser II upgrade. Hi, why does your Retriever only have 1 Mid slot? Mine has 2. Also your Power Grid and CPU are both way low. The former is half what mine's showing and the latter is boosted with your Rig to about 20 tf less than mine is without boosting. Is it a skill difference? Did you accidentally save Covetor fits instead of Retriever ones?
Stupid question if i may . I just renewed my Alpha and for some reason my drone band with is cut in half almost. I can only fly 2 mining drones instead of all 5 in my Procure . Have been messing around with this for hours now and have not been able to find ANYTHING here on you tube about how to fix this problem.. any suggestions or ideas ? H E L P .......
are you using a warp core stabilizer? they recently changed that module to reduce your drone bandwidth by 50%... or if you dont have at least drones 3?
Eh ... I've done things a little differently. I played the game seriously from 2007 to 2012 had multiple accounts and did my own mining ops with an Orca, some barges and a hauler. Back then the main difference between the Covetor, Retriever and Procurer was that the had 3, 2 and 1 high slot each. Now it seems they've all got 2 but are configured differently to be used for different purposes. Yes - they seem to be Covetor for fleet ops, Retriever for solo and Procuror for greater risk. Back then - each empire had it's own mining frigate and mining cruiser - but now - the Ventures are a lot better with that large ore hold. One thing you left out - was the Rookie Ships. If you leave ship and repackage your Rookie Ship - it will dump all your modules into the Items Hangar. Then when you assemble it - it will assemble with a complete set of Rookie stuff. This gives you two of each. One on you ship and one in the Items Hangar. Doing this - you can fit two miners or two guns right away - and double the amount of ore you can mine with it. This usually doesn't matter unless you are bringing up a new character as new players don't know you can do that. Then - if you run the Career Agent for Mining they will give you a Venture after completing your second mission. You can then strip the rookie ship and put it on the Venture until you get something better. I always train up my drone skills as soon as I can - that way - you can use the Venture for all of your Career Agent Missions until you get a free combat ship, if you want. One thing about the Rookie ships - is that they can all carry a drone with the Velator getting two. Drones are the combat mode of the miner - and - they can help mine. I fit my Ventures similar to yours. I use the Gausians because of their range but then move on to the Miner II's for their volume. I don't usually put speed modules on miners though sometimes I do. The Venture is fast enough to get around in. I put a Medium Shield extender, an asteroid survey module and maybe a small shield extender in the mid's. I also will carry a salvager - so that if I kill some rats with my drones I can salvage them. The way I travel in a belt - is to bookmark an asteroid I want to go to - warp to a planet - then warp back to the book mark. Given the size of the Venture's Ore Hold - shorter distances don't need a speed module. The places speed modules come in handy is mining Mission Space. You are less likely to be attacked in mission space as they have to go to the trouble to scan you down. If you look at the map with Pilots In Space set - you can see where the quiet systems are. If you run missions and mine them in quiet High Sec systems your are probably going to be fine. If you are concerned you can make a habit of running DScan and learn to look out for Combat Scanner Probes. I don't like losing and if the gankers get me - then I've lost. So I prefer to do what I can about that - which includes a tank. For non-combat ships - they often have a good bit of structure - so - if you put a damage control module and a Reinforced Bulkheads on them - that can help. I don't use rigs on Ventures as what I will do with those is repackage them - put everything on an industrial - and then fly that to where I want to go. I always fit a survey scanner to analyze the rocks so I have some idea how long they are going to last - and if I'm in a belt - so I can find the biggest ones. .
Thanks for the great guide on mining ship fits, I have a few questions on other aspecs of minign: How big of a problem are gankers in Highsec? How do you search for asteroid fields? one that has enough ores, is somewhat safe and where I don't have too big of a competition. Are there locations where you get more for your Ore? Do you sell Raw ore or process it and build things (given you have the skills and blueprints)?
OK a lot of questions and I have answers lol So gankers can be a problem in HighSec if you stay out of the notoriously bad systems. Just look up the system you want to mine on zkillboard.com see how many miners got ganked recently. I would say more than a gank every few days means that it on the gankers daily route. Get away from the major trade hubs, play a procurer and you'll be fine. I've played long enough to have same systems saved as my usual mining spots. Honestly most systems that are 8+ jumps away from a major trade hub and since you are solo, competition isnt really a thing. If you are in a fleet trying to compete with other fleets thats different. I am not 100% sure on this but I heard that 0.6 & 0.5 systems will have 'larger' asteroids with more to mine from than say 1.0 or 0.9 but I can't confirm that. You can mine more lucrative ores in low/null but that places are obviously very dangerous and will likely get you ganked within an hour. I have a quick tip video on how to 'compress' your ore which increases it value by 10% or so and shrinks it size so its easier to haul. I did that for a long time and made some good isk. I am not into industry personally since its hard to make a profit w/o really good skills. Hope this helps! o7
@@eventon9372 Wow, thanks for the quick answere. Really appreciate it. I'm currently getting back to the game after over 3 years not playing, and am currently searching for a good way to use my character to generate some ISK while I start a new one.

Hey berwyn and thanks for watchin! I just added the timestamps and thats a good idea if I am covering a lot of topics or fits. I've used eveworkbench before but never put up a fit myself. Should be easy enough but takes time. Thanks again!
Though the venture is small never afk always dock up. Plus it has a plus 2 warp core stabilizer built in so that will help and always dock up I use an active tank on mine I make my own rigs most times. Plus this corp called CODE Will kill innocent so make sure they are on your red list to watch for them and be ready to dock up. In high sec space.
I actually have 2 videos on exhumer fits but all of my mining fits are designed for solo play which might not be that different than fleet fits. As for why not exhumers? They cost usually 6-8x more than their barge counterpart for only 8-15% more yield at exhumers V. This makes exhumers take an extremely long time to pay themselves off solo but they are also priority gank targets especially since you get very little extra tank vs barges. Even some null alliances dont bother with exhumers since you can fit up 6 covetors for the price of 1 hulk. Are they the best? yes, but is it worth the price & risk is the real question.
whoa didnt expect a reply. back when I was mining half the new ore ships didnt even exist (pre 2010) Thanks for elaborating and I totally see your point.
Correct you need Omega to use any of the barges. This is one of my earliest videos and I could have been more clear with the difference of alpha/omega status. The only ship you can fly as an alpha is the venture. I gave a very low skill fit and a high skill (T2) fit for the venture, both usable by Alphas but there honestly isn't much else to it. In my experience, Barges are a big reason why a lot people upgrade from Alpha to Omega. So a good portion of new barge pilots, have only been Omega for like a week or two. You can still be a new player and Omega at the same time, I didn't want to leave those people out. Thanks for your feedback though!
you are showing a "Procurer" with the 4 mid level slots when it isn't a Procurer it is a "Skiff" and you are saying that you can use it as soon as you are Omega when it's a level 2 tech which means it's going to take more then a bit of time for someone to get the skills to use it.

Venture .. a MWD takes up so much of ship resources. the asteroids aren't THAT far apart, and the ship is already pretty fast. spend some time learning how to make bookmarks (that juicy Massive Scordite boulder that's out of range) to move around the belts. invest in some more tank against belt rats ( NPC pirates ) -- a Multispectrum Shield Hardener. Hobgoblins ARE light drones "first level of any kind" Procurer is better for new players, period. tank, survivability, if you're in or near CODE,et.al. territory. .. a flight ( five ) of light scout drones, another of mining drones use a Retriever if you're more sure of the relative security of the space you're mining in -- because of the time savings with the larger ore hold why do you suggest MWD for every fit? it serves no purpose /imo. new players are better off learning how to bookmark effectively .. entry bookmarks in the belt rather than the default belt warp-in .. docking .. temporary marks for wrecks (if you salvage) .. marks for where you stopped mining
thanks for the thoughtful response! I made these catering towards newbros. I completely agree that bookmarks and more tank vs a MWD is 1000% better for the venture. The question I see frequently in Rookie Chat for mining is usually "how do I go faster in my venture?" Instead of explaining bookmarks (which is really its own short video) usually MWD is fun and good enough. You can tank a venture though you should never die to belt rats at least in HS and a gank means you are dead no matter what. As for the barges, I did mention that people could put w/e they wanted. Procurer should be full tanked but personally I recommend a MWD for the other 2 for movement between rocks and the 10 second align time vs 13 w/o it. I think that will give you more of a fighting chance from gankers to get away, than putting on 2k more tank that wont help that might buy you another 1-2 seconds.
@@eventon9372 I understand the 'faster, faster' urge I am usually moving into range of new mining targets before the last one peters out .. even barge speed is enough for that as for escaping gankers .. awareness (another complete video about overview set-up) so you notice an influx of CODE/unknown neutrals and alignment for warp (yet another video : P ) are paramount
@@kazoosc of course and I appreciate the feedback and ideas. At the end of the day, its what I personally like to add MWDs to the Covetor & Retriever since if you aren't careful and you get ganked, nothing will save you anyway. Thats why I actually left the that mid slot open for personal preference.

Speaking from brief experience as overwatch for mining fleets, Retrievers go squish
I was hellbent on buying a Retriever but as it seems I may switch to a Procurer now :D Thanks for the guide!
If you are mining within 9 jump or so from Jita I would recommend a Procurer. But if you are in a quiet part of space and zkillboard shows no recent ganks than you can can definitely get a retriever!
The Covetor has the 50 m^3 so you can use Ice Mining Drones.
Good point! As you can tell I don't use the Covetor much as a solo player lol
This video about my recommended fits and which barges to use for newer miners. What is your favorite mining barge?!
@Noah Posiedon very true and I really enjoy being a solo player! with my alt occasionally as well :P
A skiff, with ORE mining lasers, is my fav. boat. Thanks for the video!
You wasted a lot of time on the other barges, should have just promoted the procurer. Best barge period, let alone for solo miners. It can also be a formidable combatant. My first pvp kill was when I was in a procurer.
My procurer fit, 75.5k EHP. Yes, I sacrificed yield for tank. And you can add about 4k more tank, by swapping out the ML-3 for a EM Shield Amplifier II. Just keep a mobile depot and the ML-3 in cargo, to swap out when you get on point, scan, then swap them again.

@EVEnton Procurer has changed now, 2 mid and 3 low instead of 4 mid 2 low, with a medium shield extender 2, multispectrum shield 1, damage contorl 1 and your rigs i have it at 44,510 EHP (50,374 with the multi turned on) so its down a little from yours in the vid but i will most likely have lower skills to which would affect it a bit i guess
please up the volume when recording recording
1:35 Starts with *NOW*! My first mining ship was the Osprey, I think, in the before times!!!
@@eventon9372 Thanks a lot!
Procurer is probably the best out of them all
Its what I recommend for new barge pilots but they all have their strengths and weaknesses!
@@HattaTHEZulZILLA86 my favorite ship is the retriever, but the 'best' ship imo is the procurer. Interesting praxis fit too! lol
@@eventon9372
Yeah, I used that Praxis after I saw someone mining using a Rokh once in hisec when I was still a lowly Alpha. 3 cargo expansion rigs, in the low slot, 5 cargo expansions as well as a CPU and a mining laser II upgrade.
It basically outperformed a Venture at 6149 m3 cargo limit and mined a LOT more than a Venture could too per minute.
@@HattaTHEZulZILLA86 yah most fun I had in corp mining events was fitting out my 180m sp combat pilot in a hyperion with 8 t2 mining lasers, 5 mining drones, boosted.. you have to stagger the yields to not max out cargohold per yield. Looking like this spider web of lasers. Then you box over to the hulk account... and snooze.
Hi, why does your Retriever only have 1 Mid slot? Mine has 2. Also your Power Grid and CPU are both way low. The former is half what mine's showing and the latter is boosted with your Rig to about 20 tf less than mine is without boosting. Is it a skill difference? Did you accidentally save Covetor fits instead of Retriever ones?
recent update to the mining ships changed all of the stuff you mentioned. I'll have to make an updated video at some point
@@eventon9372 Hey thanks for replying! I look forward to your new video.

@@shamelessgames9158 thank you! I'll be making a video likely on how to fit barges and haulers since the new update
Thank you very much for your time, it is a very helpful tutorial
of course man! Planning on making some more tutorial vids soon. If you have anything you want me to cover, let me know!
I always fit a survey scanner to analyze the rocks so I have some idea how long they are going to last - and if I'm in a belt - so I can find the biggest ones.
.
Thanks for the great guide on mining ship fits,
I have a few questions on other aspecs of minign:
How big of a problem are gankers in Highsec?
How do you search for asteroid fields?
one that has enough ores, is somewhat safe and where I don't have too big of a competition.
Are there locations where you get more for your Ore?
Do you sell Raw ore or process it and build things (given you have the skills and blueprints)?
OK a lot of questions and I have answers lol
So gankers can be a problem in HighSec if you stay out of the notoriously bad systems.
2 years later and the ships are 2X the price and 1 of the Mid Slots was moved to a Low Slot
Thanks for these builds and the explainer! It was super-helpful in picking a barge for a new player :)
For future videos, would it be too much to ask for timestamps in the description, and maybe builds on Workbench?
Hey berwyn and thanks for watchin! I just added the timestamps and thats a good idea if I am covering a lot of topics or fits. I've used eveworkbench before but never put up a fit myself. Should be easy enough but takes time. Thanks again!
Loved the video, very helpful! I just purchased my first barge, the Procurer...do your fitting recommendations still apply today?
Are miner 2's better than those lasers that you were using?
1 smal question. im Amarr so i dont have any bis shield skills its all on my Armor. can i make it armor tank aswell?
i cant get to the big mining ship becaus i have to buy to get them witch is very boring i really want to get the big mining ship.
How are you getting the three ice modules withouth overloading?
Thanks for bringing this up! I just updated it, honestly ice belts are pretty heavily ganked so tanking it is kinda pointless. thanks again!
what happened to my mining LAZERBEAM?
I tent to try and load a DC2 on everything.
Though the venture is small never afk always dock up. Plus it has a plus 2 warp core stabilizer built in so that will help and always dock up I use an active tank on mine I make my own rigs most times. But just saying never leave the computer even for 5 minutes when you are new player or old always insure your ships. Plus this corp called CODE Will kill innocent so make sure they are on your red list to watch for them and be ready to dock up. In high sec space.
lmao, I can assure you I am mostly afk when mining in a venture in high sec. Watching paint dry is more entertaining
Does this require Omega ?
Yes it does
Why did everyone abandon the Hulk train? Exhumer not king anymore?

You need omega to get any of these barges, as a new player I believe that it is a bad assumption to think that most new players have omega
What is the benefit to being tanky if you're solo and have been disabled from warping? Isn't it just a slower death?
These are high sec fits, just need to buy enough time for concord show up

Bro I cant hear the video at all.
Sorry, this was one of my earliest videos with a bad mic and unfamiliar with the editing software at the time. The newer videos sound much better and I plan on making an updated version of these fits early 2021.
Venture .. a MWD takes up so much of ship resources. the asteroids aren't THAT far apart, and the ship is already pretty fast. spend some time learning how to make bookmarks (that juicy Massive Scordite boulder that's out of range) to move around the belts. invest in some more tank against belt rats ( NPC pirates ) -- a Multispectrum Shield Hardener. Hobgoblins ARE light drones "first level of any kind"
Procurer is better for new players, period. tank, survivability, if you're in or near CODE,et.al. territory.
.. a flight ( five ) of light scout drones, another of mining drones
use a Retriever if you're more sure of the relative security of the space you're mining in -- because of the time savings with the larger ore hold
why do you suggest MWD for every fit? it serves no purpose /imo. new players are better off learning how to bookmark effectively .. entry bookmarks in the belt rather than the default belt warp-in .. docking .. temporary marks for wrecks (if you salvage) .. marks for where you stopped mining
thanks for the thoughtful response!
@@eventon9372
I understand the 'faster, faster' urge
I am usually moving into range of new mining targets before the last one peters out .. even barge speed is enough for that
as for escaping gankers .. awareness (another complete video about overview set-up) so you notice an influx of CODE/unknown neutrals and alignment for warp (yet another video : P ) are paramount
@@kazoosc of course and I appreciate the feedback and ideas. At the end of the day, its what I personally like to add MWDs to the Covetor & Retriever since if you aren't careful and you get ganked, nothing will save you anyway. Thats why I actually left the that mid slot open for personal preference.
can't hear shit
