    I appreciate the math. Also, thanks for indicating that you worked out the numbers ahead of time. I was beginning to think you are a prodigy. However, the 48 x 60 blanket you are thinking of making is approximately double 24 x 36, so I would simply double the yarn the instructions call for. I see that your math makes all the sense in the world, but 40 skeins of yarn is going to give you A LOT of left over yarn. Don't you think?

      Thank you for taking the time to comment! It might seem like something 24 X 36 is approximately half the size of something that is 48 X 60, but the math gives us a different answer. We're looking at the area of the blanket, not the dimensions. It might help to think about it on a smaller scale. If you have an index card that is 3 X 5, a card twice that big (or two cards lying next to each other) would be 6 X 5, not 6 X 10. You would need four cards lying in a rectangle to make the dimensions 6 X 10, even though the dimensions have only increased by a multiple of two. I hope I'm understanding you correctly and making sense! As for the extra yarn, you are probably right that 40 skeins would give you quite a bit left over, but I think that might be because the original pattern calls for 3 balls of each different color and very likely doesn't use all of the third ball for each color. I know for me, I have often had yarn left over with a pattern that calls for multiple colors. But I absolutely agree that 40 skeins is heck of a lot of yarn! I think I should have chosen a pattern with a single color yarn to use as an example. I’m going to pin this comment in the hopes that it will help someone else, because I can easily follow your thinking, and I bet you’re not the only one!

    Thank you so much for this! You explain everything in plain, easy to understand, terms. I found a lap blanket pattern that I love, but want to make in a twin size. Your easy formulas just saved me from trial and error headaches! ❤

    Wow! Very clear and concise calculations. I've done some major head scratching trying to figure pattern multiples. The yarn calculation is a bonus. Thank you!!!😊

    Very helpful tips! I'm math challenged, and I think I could follow this if I needed to resize a pattern. If I ever learn how to crochet. :-)

    Thank You! I was trying to calculate the charge in size and didn't come out with such a easy and clean way of getting the end result. Now how do I calculate how much yarn is needed for a sweater if I use a different size hook, different yarn , or different stitch

    How does this work for garments? Like if it's a top down sweater and I'm trying to increase the size. Say I figured out the number to chain, but would that make my yolk too big? Thank you!

    • @craftglad
      @craftglad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Resizing garments can be tricky! I have not made very many sweaters. I usually do projects like hats or blankets. You might try measuring a sweater that fits you well and trying to adjust the dimensions of the pattern to match the dimensions of that sweater. I would think you might need to adjust each measurement, like the yoke, the sleeve length, etc. individually. But depending on the pattern, that might not work very well. I tend to only work garment patterns that are already the size I'm making to avoid this very issue. I wish I could help more! There are likely tutorials online that would give you better advice than I can. Good luck!

    Help, I am making a crotched blanket but it caal for me to use a huge hook and I want to make it wider but using a size h hook which is smaller for a tighter stitch. how do I figure out how many I need to decrease or increese when I get down to my Ice skate at the bottom?

      Try some videos on swatching. That might help. I don't have any on my channel but it should be easy to find some. Good luck!

    I have a pattern using Loops and Threads, snuggly Wuggly, 100% acrylic, weight light (sport) #3,446 yards/408m, 5oz/141g. Hook 3.75 I want to use 100%double knit cotton, 50g/135m hook 3.5 the repeat pattern to finished size of 5 and a half inches. Can you help me please. Thank you 😊.

      Hi, Eleanora! It can be tricky to change both the yarn weight and the hook size at the same time and resize a pattern. It might help to use the gauge guide in your pattern and choose a hook that gives you the right gauge with that yarn, then try to resize. I hope this helps! 🙂

    i have a question how can i make a chunky bee but instead of a chunky yarn I'm gonna use is 4 ply yarn how can I do that? because as you can see chunky yarn is big and 4 ply yarn is small so how can I multiply the pattern of a bee instead of the yarn cause I cannot still figure it out on how to make a chunky bee using a 4 ply yarn its like double the size ya know?

    • @craftglad
      @craftglad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi, Rita! My suggestion would be that instead of trying to resize that kind of pattern, which would be pretty difficult, maybe work with more than one strand of the 4-ply yarn at a time, which will give you a result more like what you'd get with a chunky yarn. I know that two strands of worsted weight yarn is about the same size as one strand of chunky yarn, so maybe experiment with two or three strands together of your smaller weight yarn and see how that looks. There's some info here that might be useful: www.yarnspirations.com/guide-to-multi-strand-crochet.html I hope this helps! 🙂

    What about a project (no multiple) 16by20
    Single crochet

    • @craftglad
      @craftglad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Cassandra! I hope I'm understanding you correctly. You have a project that is all single crochet that you are wanting to be 16x20 inches when finished, correct? You could work a swatch of 10 sc stitches in 10 rows. Measure how many stitches in the width of your swatch are in 1 inch, then multiply that number by 16 to get how many stitches would be in 16 inches. Then measure how many rows are in 1 inch in the height of your swatch and multiply that number by 20 to get the number of rows in 20 inches. I hope this helps!
