My grandson asked me if I could make a Ben-10 character. No pattern exists for Cannonbolt. Then I stumbled on to your video. I thought ok, I can try this. I think it turned out pretty great. Thank you for explaining this process so well.
I have a question. Can you make this a series, please? I want to learn more on this topic. You're channel has been such an inspiration for me to actually try to design my own amigurumi patterns.
@@ComplicatedKnots maybe some more videos on the sketches? I'm interested on learning more about drawing the cross sections ( I can barely stay stick figures). And more on the photographing the finished pieces for assembly purposes when it comes to actually polishing up the patterns. I would also like to see more about how to go about doing complicated patterns. I like to draw a lot of my inspiration for amigurumi from video games and I've been wanting to do patterns for the creatures from Ooblets. But a lot of those creatures have a lot of parts and details. I've also been wanting to do some Fall Guys amigurumi plushes.
This is such a clear explanation of the steps! I'm American, but I was taught the basics of metric in my biology minor 40 some years ago. As I have used the internet I've worked on a solution for when projects or cooking recipes are in metric. I don't even try to convert between the 2 systems. I have measuring tools in imperial and also in metric. I use the tools I need for how the pattern is written. I long ago learned the crochet terms in both US and UK. I'm 75 now. I forget more easily now. So if the pattern is UK I now put the US abbreviation in bracket with each row. This works for my math challenged brain. My husband was station in Germany for 8 years. He learned to do the math in his head to convert from one to the other. That means he is rattling decimal fractions in inches at me. Which then means I have to convert the decimal fractions to 1/4s,1/8s, 1/16s, etc. That puts me into total brain misfunction. 😢😢😢 Inch rulers here in the US do not divide into 1/10s of inches. So I stick to using the tools for the system instructions are using. It works with less stress for me! Also I'm number dyslexic. I was an Army brat. We moved every few months. There were sections of arithmetic books never saw until I was 23. I had to take Teaching of Arithmetic at that age. It was the first time I was taught math from start to finish in proper order. I joke that I don't do above 3rd grade math. My daughter is good at math. She's getting an electrical engineering degree and is doing high level calculus. I'm a proud mama.😊 I'm so enjoying your videos on how to design. Thanks for them.
I love this video! I never thought about "slicing" your picture up so you can see better when you need to increase and decrease. This had so much good information. I love your channel and I can't wait for Halloween designs!
I learned how to crochet by buying a pattern and painstakingly watching youtube videos for each stitch I had to learn, so I never learned how to make things without using a pattern. Of all the guides on YT, this is the most helpful, least gatekeeping one I've found. It's so hands on and detailed and practical that I actually think I can do this now. Watching the other videos--I could never. Thank you for not gatekeeping this info. It's an excellent video and I learned so much. THANK YOU
Please please make this a whole series!! You are the only creator I know of that can explain this topic in such a beginner-friendly way. Thank you very much
This guide is amazing! I am nowhere near designing anything myself, but with this knowledge, even following a pattern makes so much more sense to me! I finally know WHY I am doing things when I do them!
One of my favourite things about this video is the tiny hair dye stains on your forehead. Its a comforting reminder that even a crochet goddess is a human just like me... Love your videos!
absolutely wonderful video. You explained every detail and how to organize as you go along (so the pattern is readable at the end!). thank you so much :))
This was so helpful! I knew that one day I could make my own amigurumi, but I never thought it would be so soon. My stuffed animal came out looking like something you could buy from a store!
I've watched this video a few times now and I can finally stop fangirling enough to write a coherent review me thinks. :) You've explained the process beautifully, and in a really approachable and "anyone can do it if they try" sort of way, which I really appreciate. I've been wanting to design some of the lesser-available pokemon, and now I'm abusing the 360 rotating feature on the pokemon go pokedex to sketch a few out to start out with. Thanks so much for sharing! And the hippos are so cute!
THIS IS GREAT! (sorry for yelling) I have read in pattern books "how to design you own", and I know enough to make my own, but Im a bit lazy. After watching your video Im all in for it! Now I just need to figure out what to make, and start the drawing! This was so great, with both the visual and you explaining at the same time!
This is absolutely fantastic! As a new crocheter, I have been eyeing SO many things I would love to try and design but I just had NO idea where to start. Thank you so much for this video, I look forward to all the future ones ❤️
This is incredible! Thank you so much, this is going to make the whole hobby even more fun than it already is. There's sooo much room for creativity, I'm all hyped up now.
Thank you so much for all your design tutorials! They are very clear, helpful, and I love the bits of maths. ✨ I had a day to crochet a saxophone for a friend, but couldn't find any free patterns. Just a few days earlier, I had watched a few of your tutorials on pattern designing. I decided this was the perfect time to try it out, since there was no other solution. I found your explanations on slopes and your own visualisation tool most helpful! There were a few rounds I would do a bit different looking back, but I'm really proud of what I accomplished in 4-5 hours, and my friend really liked it- I literally couldn't have done it without you and your channel
I designed and crocheted a simple dragon plushie thanks to the inspiration I got from this channel! I don’t know how much I can credit this video specifically since I got too excited a 3rd of the way in and just... started lol but funky original shaping techniques aside, I really love it! And it was an extremely informative project that really helped me push past my limits and get a feel for what my crochet instincts are! Thank you for making such fun and informative videos!!
This is the best tutorial I've ever encountered for teaching crochet. Period. It's not over complicated, you explain very well without too much, and it's easy to retain. Wonderful. ❤😊 Thanks, friend.
Trying to make an etsy account and I wanted to sell something more original and now here I am! My project is looking good so far but nothing is going perfect the first time but thats alright :)
I don't usually leave comments here, but I had to this time! You are amazing! 💯 You explain everything so well and you have a sense of humour throughout your videos too. Please continue all these courses if you have more. I will gladly watch them and give you a like! ⭐️
This video was super helpful! In addition, whenever I try designing amigurumi I'm going to put my own tips in this comment that have helped me and I think could help others!! If anybody uses these let me know!! *TIPS!* 1. I like to use the measuring tip not only for the # of rows, but for the # of stitches as well! I only measure at a few key spots so I can let the slicing do the rest. 2. If you're having a hard time determining the spacing for your stitches (especially if you applied tip 1), or it's hard to determine the 3D shape of it row by row, draw a circle and label the front & back/top & bottom of your shape! then you can plan things and space things out easily. 2a. If decreases are tough to figure out with the circle, slice it up like a pie so your decreases fall on the tips of those lines, then draw a circle around it to indicate there's two stitches being used up! 2b. EDIT: this was before I watched the shaping guide video and omg how did i predict that circle usage 3. A tip for amigurmi in general: if you have a ton of stitch markers. use them. *ALL* of them. I place stitch markers on every stitch(es) I need to increase and decrease, and it makes counting so much easier bc all you need to worry about it having the correct amount of stitches when you start your row!!
I so appreciate the insight into your designing processes!!! I've followed patterns for around 5-10 amigurumis of varying complexity, in addition to a few years of odds-and-ends clothing crochet (lots of scarves, a few hats, and one pair of house slippers). Your breakdown here makes me feel that this process is perfectly attainable with my current skillset. I think I'll set a goal to design and complete my first amigurumi by the end of calendar year 2023 (around 7 months). Wish me luck!
Thank you so much! I've been scared to start amigurmi because I need to understand what I'm doing before I actually do it. Having this pattern tutorial helps me understand how it all works! I would love to see this turn into a series! Thank you so much!
GIRL, You are amazing!!! I completely mean Girl in a positive, a sisterhood kind of sense, not in any negative way what so ever!!!I I only clarify that due to your age and I don't want to seem as though because of the difference I would think of this as looking down upon you, actually far from it I'm looking up to you, and I don't want the way things can be twisted these days to make this look negative. I probably didn't need to explain all that, but just in case I do there it is. I am 53 years old and started learning crochet when I was about 7. I am in no way even a rookie/newbie and am likely back to knowing hardly anything because I can't seem to get some things as I should have been able to just go with but I'm struggling a bit, but that is beside the point.... you have taught me so much more than I did know, I think because my mom had a limited amount of knowledge to teach me more, and you have way more knowledge than she had. I do know at least the basic crochet stiches, the terminology and the abbreviations in most cases, so it's mostly getting my hands to work correctly and regain that muscle memory back and then I'll be flying again!!! not only have you taught me more about the process of creating the items themselves, now you.re teaching me how to create patterns as well!!! Girl, YOU ROCK!!! Oh and I love the hippo!!! Just a suggestion.... the addition of the nostrils really made it appear even more realistic!! A shade or two darker yarn would do so even better maybe, as they are pretty big openings in real life...more shadowed in.
I’m not even finished with the video but I want to say THANK YOU!!!! 🙏🏻 you have already started building up my confidence and helped me get the bunny in creating for my niece into paper! I really appreciate this video so much. I want to learn all of the technical skills and grow my knowledge so I can create what I want from my mind without crying because there’s no pattern available 😢
The way you teach is BY FAR the most concise, easy to understand videos, i would love to see more of these types of videos! One that goes a bit more into the calculations aspect of designing would be great:) or more on shaping? Keep up the good work❤! ❤❤❤
I've wanted to get into writing my own patterns but literally had no idea where to start or how to do it. This video was INCREDIBLY HELPFUL!!! Thank you so much. I'm not nearly as intimidated as I was before 🤗
This is an amazing video. I love crocheting but can never find an exact pattern that I want and have been wanting to figure out how to do this!! So thankful I found this video! You explained this all very well without any “fluff” stuff. Thank you.
I love that you added the nostrils into the piece instead of adding them on to the base later. Not sure how - I’m a beginner- but it looks great that way. If you make another video maybe add how to make bits that stick out like that while you design
I started designing patterns a couple months ago, and I thought of counting out the rows, but I figured the curves would mean I'd have to do circumference math and I got a little confused. I never realized until I saw you do it that that wasn't necessary. You saved me a lot of headache and really opened up my world, thank you so much!!
this video is so thorough and i love seeing how to calculate the size for every part too! i’d eyeball it and have to frog constantly so having this is amazing
This might be the best and most detailed crochet - no, guide video I ever watched on the internet! Thank you so much for all the inspiration!! You're awesome!
So, so, so usefull! I have thinking of trying to design for so long, but it all seem like a BIG Giant mountain to do! LOL Now, not anymore!!!! At least you gave me a method ( I understand that they can be others, but I think this one would suits me! Thank you so much ! I would absolutely follow a serie form you!
This was absolutely helpful! Thank you so much for such a clear and detailed video to help those trying to start creating their own little creatures ☺️
This was EXTREMELY HELPFUL!!! I cannot thank you enough for making this video! I have been struggling with how to start creating amigurumi patterns and this was the PERFECT video for me. Thank you so much!!
I just got into crocheting a few weeks ago to make clothes and toys for our first child due this winter and this was exactly what I was looking for! Thank you SO so much for explaining all of this so clearly. I was already trying to measure out and figure out the math myself and am just so excited to design my daughter's first toys. Thank you!!
Thank you! I have trouble followibg other peoples pattern and not being able to make plushies with my imagination, but now since i know i can!! So thank you for helping all of us crochet our own patterns!!
You have absolutely blown my mind. I just keep asking everyone how they do this and they always just say trial and error, just pick up your yarn and try. I have been looking so long for a comprehensive explanation of this exact process. Thank you so much for doing this! Now if you have any ideas on how to design my own amigurumi clothes I may just make you Queen of the world!
Haha, glad I could help! I've only done amigurumi clothing once, but I have some theories about how to approach it. I'll probably do a video on it as soon as I've tested them :)
I've just started crocheting recently and was getting a feel for what stitches did what, and loved how systematic your approach was in this video (and how cute your hippo turned out!). Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you so much for this video. I have been wanting to create my own patterns for a while now and never knew how to start and such. Also, I loved the stubby bodybof the purple one. I thought it was super cute.
This is brilliant! I didn’t know there was such a video out there. I have been pondering how to begin my own designs and I feel like I can get started after watching your video. I am hoping there are additional tutorials such as this in your channel. Thank you!😍
a someone studying to be an engineer, I'm quaking at the similarities in orthographic drawing with the concept sketches (which is my favorite part of the design process). this sort of thing is right up my ally.
ON GOD same. I saw the front, side, and top views and went ahhhh, we're literally doing orthographics now. even the pieces are just an assembly drawing with a little less busywork and title blocks
Thank you so much! This was incredibly helpful, I watched like 5 other videos before I watched yours and none of them were nearly as helpful as yours. What yesterday seemed like unreal task, I think I could do it today. Again, thank you so much!!!
I love this series! I know you probably are finished the series but I personally would love more videos like part 2 of this video, where you did the worm but different shapes and animals, etc. For example I’m trying to create a basic foot that decreases into a straight leg because the pattern I am following from this particular person butchered the legs and is not eligible (I already had to figure out counting mistakes in the body). However the foot and leg are crocheted as one piece separately and then attached at the bottom of the body. I’m stuck at making a sinch before the leg and heel and then to go straight up single crocheting after lol and the hippo/worm just almost explain it but I need to know essentially how to make an L shape in rounds. Thanks for listening to my rant lol and I totally spelt “Sinch” wrong but I feel like you would understand what I’m trying to get at.
Excellent! Very useful video. I have some shapes that I have been wanting to convert to patterns and have been praying for guidance. I think after watching this video and it’s second part I can make an attempt and proceed with my projects.
This!!! This was the kind of video I have been looking for!!! Ive watched other videos, but they didn’t explain everything this way. So happy I found this. Thank you for this amazing video!!!
This is so helpful! Thank you so much for making this video. Would love a video series of the design process. I'd love more on making flat shapes. Like the ears for your hippo for example.
I have watched MANY videos on how to make your own designs, and this one covers EVERYTHING I was looking for perfectly and it had stuff I didn't even know about !! Thank you so much ♥
thank you! I had a friend ask me to make something for her and I have some ideas but haven't started designing yet, so I am going to watch this for some inspiration
Thanks for this tutorial! I just finished making Florence Nightingale for my history project and inspiration just hit me and I felt the need to create my own pattern. This is very helpful for someone who knows crochet and has done crochet pattern before
i love this video so much! i have been wanting to start making my own amigurumi patterns instead of having to buy them and this was the perfect video!!
Thank you so much for this video! It was really helpful. I only ever modified patterns before and attempting to make one of my own has always seemed very intimidating. I ended up coming up with an idea of something I wanted to make, but I have been procrastinating it for weeks because its a bit ambitious considering I haven't really made my own patterns before. After watching this video I think im going to give it a try though.
I loooved this ! I’m just picking up crocheting because i want to make lil animals and pokémon and I made soo many notes it was so helpful, thank you !!
Shaping cheat sheet Wider but not taller: Place six increases around your row Taller at the same width: Single crochet in each stitch in the round Wider and taller: Place 1-5 increases with single crochets between Narrower and taller: Place 1-5 decreases with single crochets in between Narrower but not taller: Place six decreases around your row Just putting this here for the copy and pasters
ok i do not have the patience to do this myself but I have gained a new level of respect for people who regularly do this and I understand why people sell patterns for money now lmao
This video is amazing I never thought about making patterns but after see this video, it definitely narrowed it down for me and I might try to make something soon❤😮😊
Thanks for this! When I make my patterns, I don't draw it out and just start making pieces while writing each pattern for each row as I go, but this vid made me find out more effective ways!
I loved the video so much and it has inspired me to have a go at making my own patterns I found it so helpful thank you. I would like to see more on scaling up and down and maybe a full video of each step so it's a bit slower and more in depth
Recently found that my favorite way to Yo/Yu is to actually Yu and then Yo. Gives a tight stitch like Yu and Yu but it is easier for me and looks rlly nice.
while I don't really plan on getting into designing amigurumi (heck, I hardly even like making amigurumi), this was incredibly informative about how to design patterns in general. I've been crocheting for a long time, and I know all kinds of tricks and cute stitches, but I struggle designing shapes. I can implement a motif and I know a lot of ways to make and use squares or circles to create things. but shaping eludes me if it's not a pattern I can follow step by step. which is super not fun because patterns are actually really difficult for me to read, because my brain gets lost with all the abbreviations. Like, I *know* what they mean, but when reading them, my brain just sees letters. and I've got dyslexia, so they're jumbled letters at that. I have to essentially rewrite the pattern instructions separately with full words in order to really understand. And even then I often find that I've misunderstood the instructions somewhere. I've never met a written pattern that I didn't have to frog to the point of being forced to scrap bits of yarn from frogging so much. I do best with visual (video) tutorials. (also helps to see that what I'm doing is looking like it's supposed to and to catch mistakes early on). anyway. I've been thinking about getting into designing patterns for the things I do like to make: tops, hats, scarves, gloves, slippers, bags, etc. But I wasn't reallly sure where to start. and this has been so helpful. like, the measuring and converting that to size and stitches. cutting the diagram into rows to really see *where* exactly shaping needs to occur. and I really love that you used a hippo, because it demonstrates how you can make one area smaller while making another area larger in the same rows. and I think these things might really help me become a better crocheter in general, because I struggle to wrap my head around 3d designs that I can't see physically. Visualizing them is difficult for me. I've tried drawing them out before, but it hasn't really helped. And I think the slicing thing is really really gonna make the difference from theory to practice for me. but I also appreciate that you show us your notes page and explain the layout and such. it's basically the first draft of an actual pattern -- layout, materials, and all -- and rather than trying to scrape one together after the fact, it's much easier to just start on the right foot right from the beginning.
My grandson asked me if I could make a Ben-10 character. No pattern exists for Cannonbolt. Then I stumbled on to your video. I thought ok, I can try this. I think it turned out pretty great. Thank you for explaining this process so well.

This is amazing! I actually made a little dragon and I’m so happy! I never thought I’d be able
To make my own pattern! Thank you so much!
Thank you.
Please please please make this into a series!!! I’ve learned so much and what to know MORE!! Please! ❤️❤️
This is such an incredible guide/tutorial, can't believe it's not viral! Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful! :)
@@ComplicatedKnots it wasn't just helpful, it was also sooo enjoyable to watch! I will be coming back to this, and watching everything else too 🌻
I’ve been looking for a tutorial like this. Makes so much more sense the way you teach it. Thank you!!😊
I love that you added the nostrils into the piece instead of adding them on to the base later.
You saved me a lot of headache and really opened up my world, thank you so much!!
this video is so thorough and i love seeing how to calculate the size for every part too! i’d eyeball it and have to frog constantly so having this is amazing
the way you explain the whole process really does make me think I could do this, going to give it a go after my current project, wish me luck :D
I've been trying to do this for months, and finally came across your video. Thank you, lots of brilliant ideas, and clearly presented.
This was absolutely helpful! Thank you so much for such a clear and detailed video to help those trying to start creating their own little creatures ☺️
This helped with the math process, since I had no idea how to go about it. Thank you! ^^
Glad I could help! :)
I was wondering how to make what i want and universe braught this video to me 💜🙏🏻🧿
This was EXTREMELY HELPFUL!!! I cannot thank you enough for making this video! I have been struggling with how to start creating amigurumi patterns and this was the PERFECT video for me. Thank you so much!!
I never knew you could make square and triangle bases! Thank you so much for the helpful information
@@ComplicatedKnots That would be so helpful! Thank you for sharing all off your knowledge on the subject.
One of the most helpful videos on crocheting I've ever found!
This is the most helpful video I have ever seen for amigurumi!!! Thank you so much!!!
I've just started crocheting recently and was getting a feel for what stitches did what, and loved how systematic your approach was in this video (and how cute your hippo turned out!). Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Such a great guide!! Would love a part 2 discussing how to do more complicated or specific shapes
THIS IS AWESOME!! Thank you for making everything so clear and concise.
Thank you so much for this video. I have been wanting to create my own patterns for a while now and never knew how to start and such. Also, I loved the stubby bodybof the purple one. I thought it was super cute.
I never knew why they called it frogging! 🐸Thank you for clearing that up!
This is video is just so awesome, even as a beginner I can understand thoroughly, thank you so much for such great content!
Very informative. You are clear & concise in your explanations and your accompanying photos are also very clear. Thank you!
Thank you so much! This was incredibly helpful, I watched like 5 other videos before I watched yours and none of them were nearly as helpful as yours. What yesterday seemed like unreal task, I think I could do it today. Again, thank you so much!!!
I just found your channel and I’m actually so happy I clicked on ur video Thankyou for helping
This video is so awesome 😍 so perfectly detailed definitely one of a kind, please do a series of it. ✨✨✨ Thank you for sharing so much.
Thanks for the suggestion, I definitely need to talk about that in a video :)
I have watched MANY videos on how to make your own designs, and this one covers EVERYTHING I was looking for perfectly and it had stuff I didn't even know about !! Thank you so much ♥
Glad I could help!
You have completely inspired me to start designing amigurumi- thank you!
You should definitely turn this into a series
It would be a really fun challenge for the viewers to try to design a new amigurumi for every video
Approved! On my way to check if there is or will be a similar tutorial to create no-sew pattern as well 😁
Absolute genius! Slicing up the drawing is going to be a game changer for me. Thank you for sharing your design process!
This is so ridiculously helpful. Thank you!
I love how intuitive this is!
By far the most helpful crochet video. Thank you!
That's awesome, good luck!
I loooved this ! I’m just picking up crocheting because i want to make lil animals and pokémon and I made soo many notes it was so helpful, thank you !!
I'm so impressed....Great content.
Valuable information.
You explained everything really well.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for this video. I would love to see more videos about shaping too, eg...an elephant trunk or legs. Thanks.
Wow. This video was amazing! You explained everything really well. I hope you make more videos like this in the future ❤️
Shaping cheat sheet
Wider but not taller: Place six increases around your row
Taller at the same width: Single crochet in each stitch in the round
Wider and taller: Place 1-5 increases with single crochets between
Narrower and taller: Place 1-5 decreases with single crochets in between
Narrower but not taller: Place six decreases around your row
Just putting this here for the copy and pasters
This is so helpful thank you so much! ❤
@@zarac2107 Glad it helps! I like having things written down lol
This was so helpful in so many ways please make a video series!!!
I like this! I usually would just buy yarn and start and let the crochet gods decide the size of my amigurumi
I'm so bummed there's no tail. But this tutorial is outstanding. Thank you very much!
I appreciate the level of detail you put into this :) Super helpful
ok i do not have the patience to do this myself but I have gained a new level of respect for people who regularly do this and I understand why people sell patterns for money now lmao
This video is amazing I never thought about making patterns but after see this video, it definitely narrowed it down for me and I might try to make something soon❤😮😊
Full series, please!!!❤❤
Thank you this was perfect! I learned a bunch
Your video are fun and easy to watch.
Thank you for making a easy and a understanding tutorial. You explained everything very well. I ended up taking notes so I can refer back to it. 😊
Thank you for this amazing, simple and well explained tutorial ❤
Awesome instructions! Now I think I can try designing! Many Thanks!
