    It might affect the ambient noise that you would get from an open-back, but in terms of the sound quality, it won't affect it at all. Just watch out for the ambient noise, cus it may affect how you heard the headphones before.

  • @tigerhawk84

    Something worth mentioning with the 5.0 is that since the cables are all modular now, without any of the extra bits you can plug the mic straight into the mic port on applicable headsets, like the HyperX cloud, and not have much of any cable slack at all. Just use the in-line mic cable on the headset itself. Requires a headset with a detachable mic though, like the clouds, and that don't have some proprietary bullcrap port instead of a regular 3.5mm.

  • @TechHyped

    Mate, definitely not an expert or engineer here BUT, yeah, magnets can *potentially* interfere with sound quality of headphones, but it depends highly on 2 things:
    1 - Strength of the magnets (direction of the magnet in relation to the driver doesn't seem to change "influence potential" because... Well, it'll either pull or push the drivers anyway);
    2 - How well built are the headphones in question.
    You've been using the HD800 for quite a while, so you can point out the quality thing much better than me here, but I don't think you'll feel any interference on normal use.
    I mean, you need a nice AMP to power the 800s properly in the first place.... You're golden, dude! ;]
    Oh, yeah... Once again, awesome content o/

    • @Chopstick2U
      @Chopstick2U 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe he could listen to a high quality mono source and see if the magnet throws things off balance.

    • @TechHyped
      @TechHyped 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jon ß yep. Anything that would be "stressful" for the headphones should be enough to test it out. I still highly doubt any interference would show up tho... I know there are some who find the HD800 to be "overhyped", but even them wont argue 'bout build quality.

    Welllll. My audio setup is pretty complex but it sounds so good. I use a pair of HD598s and a focusrite 2i2 (24bit 96k) as my input and DAC. Ill run my condenser (MXL 990) in though my daw (FL studio) for compression, a noise gate, and an equalizer, which then I run back out to a virtual mixer (voicemeeter banana). After all that I use teamspeak because its high quality af. The buffers do add a little bit of delay from when I speak and when my friends hear me but its only about 20ish to 10ish ms with a large buffer so its unnoticeable. Only spent a few hundred dollars but its sounds really good.

    Hey Dimitri,
    2nd day gaming with my modmic 5.0 and it's working great. No issues to speak of so far. People on various other reviews, either from the reviewer themselves, or from a viewer. They go on to say that they have WIN10 and have experienced bad feedback, or an annoyingly loud hum whenever they tried to use it. Each time I would fire up a round of BF4, I would do a radio check with the squad and each time they gave me a "5 by 5" [means loud & clear]. I have to say that I had no troubles with feedback or humming whatsoever. I'm using WIN10 home 64bit, and my computer is brand new....only a few months old.
    I'm just sorry it took this long for me to pull the trigger on one lol. . . . Now all I need now is for my MassD Senns HD6xx, not due till mid August :(

    Hey Dmitry, have you thought about getting a balanced cable and of course a balanced amp for the HD800? I think it would be nice to have you review maybe a Schiit Jotunheim or something, I mean yeah it's really expensive, but as a reviewer I would appreciate your opinion.

  • @Lexicon_
    @Lexicon_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dmitry, you should try routing the LED strip in your Evolv rig into the top or reversing the way they face in the back of your case. I've done it in mine and honestly the fainter illumination without the LEDs exposed in all of their eye-burning brightness looks much nicer in my opinion.

    I am a senior electric-electronics engineering student, and my comment on the magnet situation is this. Yes, the magnet of mod mic and the magnet of the driver are quite close. I am sure it will affect the driver. However, your ears can't tell the difference since the magnet on the mod mice seems weak. Also, I don't think it will shorten the life span of your HD800.

    I have an omnidirectional mic stand that works just perfect. I can't remember what brand but it was in the $30 some range. For the price it works great although it does pickup a lot of background noise. At the same time though when I have several other people over and have a video chat or conference it is the perfect choice because everyone can be heard clearly and the other people on the line can tell who is talking without voices being muffled.

  • @packdemon
    @packdemon 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You already have a desktop microphone, so why would you place a strong magnetic clasp microphone piece so close to your right (or left doesn't matter) headphone driver (magnetic transducer)? You also seem to be covering part of the mesh backing. While it might not be a lot you are definitely changing the sound of the right side in comparison with the left. If you play back audio in mono, you should definitely hear the difference between both sides.

    • @alexsimon5184

      sldoma I have the HD650s but I use a Schiit Valhalla 2/Schiit Modi 2 combo, and it sounds wonderful. The tubes look amazing also, the Valhalla 2 sends a ton of power into 300ohm headphones, twice (800mW per channel) the Jotunheim, which only sends 350mW per channel unless you use a balanced cable, which then it is 900mW per channel. The sound is very neutral for a tube amp.

  • @paskowitz
    @paskowitz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you'd have to be crazy to game on anything higher than an HD598. How many games use high bit rate, uncompressed audio? Almost none. Not to mention the need for a DAC/AMP. The diminishing returns get exponential. At that price you are better going towards theater monitors in surround sound.

    Wish I saw this review before I bough the ModMic 4 a couple weeks ago. I had the original ModMic that I wrecked the cable of (rolling over it for years with my chair) I did look at the ModMic 5 but was worried about all the connection points becoming weak over time and I mostly use uni-directional due to noise. Didn't realized they changed the cable construction and added a stronger magnet. The ModMic 4 (and original) cables are SO LONG!

    For me (and my budget) Phillips 9500 + V-moda BoomPro mic. IMO, this combo is nearly impossible to beat at the price point. You can find the headphones as low as $60 + $30 for the mic. Great sound on the headphones and only 1 cable (due to the removable phillips cable).

  • @xxFusilado

    I have a similar setup. I like it but I'm starting to get annoyed at the cables (even the one on my mouse). I'm thinking on going full wireless for that reason.
    A suggestion: when you test mics it would be nice for you to type on a mechanical keyboard while doing so to hear how much of that it picks up.

  • @Cray2TheZ
    @Cray2TheZ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    What amp would you use with this ? High end headphones only express their full potential when hooked up to high quality, dedicated hardware (amp, dac, etc.).
    If you're gonna plug them into some mobo's crappy headphone jack, why spend so much $ on "studio" equipment that will only sound as good as headphones that cost 10% of the price ?
    I am no specialist AT ALL but I've been setting my sights on some high end Sennheisers for a while now (I own a ModMic thanks to your excellent videos, btw !) and, so far, I haven't been able to decide on what dac/amp I should plug them into (the consensus seems to be tube amps, however).
    Any thoughts on the subject are more than welcome !

    • @ho0dra
      @ho0dra 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are plenty of high-end headphones that will work fine from a PC. AMPs are usually more important than DACs unless you have hizzing or coloration from the motherboard so a DAC is rarely needed (although of course sound can improve/change with a DAC).
      Also you dont buy a tube amp for the power it can offer but what it can offer to spice up the sound. Some headphones will benefit more from the sound traits of a tube than others.

    • @Cray2TheZ
      @Cray2TheZ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you guys for the replies :)
      Hydra, that's what I meant to say (poorly) ! I heard tube amps gave you the best quality audio (I didn't necessarily mean more power as I am sure plenty of amps can drive 300 ohm headphones).
      I currently own a pair of HD 598's (Sennheiser) that I got for about $100-$150 on Amazon and I tested them straight into my X99 Deluxe mobo and they weren't ANYWHERE NEAR what they sounded like when plugged into my EXCELLENT portable DAC/AMP (AudioQuest's DragonFly Red, $200 on Amazon).
      I do not own higher quality equipment at this point but, after hearing how good they sounded, I immediately wanted to explore the audiophile universe further !

    • @Cray2TheZ

    • @4lc441
      @4lc441 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea when I went from onboard sound on a decent mobo to a schiit stack it was a pretty huge difference. I don't think really expensive amps/dacs make any difference beyond that though.

    • @ho0dra
      @ho0dra 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tube amps aren't inherently superior sounding just different. With high-end audio its not so much about "good, better, best" but instead trying to get a noticeable difference to spice up music.
      A common trait of tube amps is calming down the treble, which might not be what you want OR you might love it.

    What's that silver mic called?, do the magnets come with the 5.0?, and do they work with the XB1 and PS4?

    You should really move the mic closer when using unidirectional.

    Hi Dmitry would you reccomend this over a USB mic?? Is the sound quality that different or the Modmic 5 will be good enough for streaming??

    Would be great if at some point you try Philips Fidelio X2 + Vmoda Boom Pro, to me its very close of being the perfect combination, and much cheaper than $1k.

    But what about the sound coming from open back headphones like the HD58X Jubilee? Does the ModMic capture that sound? Because it would be quite annoying

    Had mod mic 4.0 and the thing I hated the most was when I accidentally pulled he mic off the magnetic clasp. No matter how well you can improve a magnet, I'd rather just buy a decent condenser mic.

  • @basssq3
    @basssq3 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wish he would have compared the modmic 4.0 omni directional. pretty much every review I've watched it's been the 5.0 in both modes vs the 4.0 uni. I personally don't have much background noise in my room and I prefer to have the omnidirectional version but I don't know if the 5.0 is worth the upgrade from my 4.0 because I haven't heard the comparison.

      Should sound exactly the same Basss - Only upgrade if you need the modular cables and both sound modes. Otherwise, wait for the 4 to break and see what's what!

    i've got HD800S and Schiit Jotunheim amp and a clip-on Olympus mic. the set up is pretty sweet, haven't been able to test the older HD 800 for gaming, what do you think which is better?

    • @rhodey2952

      Melamauri I hear the 800s is better. More soundstage.

    • @melamauri8502
      @melamauri8502 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So confusing with the S in the end do you mean the 800S has more soundstage or the 800 (pair of 800s)

    • @rhodey2952
      @rhodey2952 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Melamauri I hear that the 800S had better soundstage than the 800. Check out zreviews on TH-cam. He's really good at reviewing headphones/audio.

      Melamauri the 800S pretty much fixes the issues the 800 had and a small upgrade in sound quality. (Think of it like the iPhone 6 vs. iPhone 6s.)

    Hey Dimitri, I have a question.
    I want to go completely wireless and have a great mic aswell. I was looking at the logitech g933 Snow but I wanted a good mic like the mod mic. is there a way I can make that wireless? or should I just get a mic on my table ot on a stand? Do you have any mic recommendations to use that are exterior? Like on the desk?
    Thank you!

    Is there any way you could mute the Mic? I stream and I want a mic for my game chat, and a mic for my stream. But I want to be able to mute my game chat if I don't want them to hear me read chat. All I'm looking for is a mic that attaches to my DT990 Pros that is able to mute

    I'm wondering if headsets with mic attached like HyperX could have a Modmic 5.0 plugged in? or if the headset will lower the microphone (Modmic 5) quality...? (Just to be rid of extra wire from the mic)

    and then use the 4.0 for the office :D

    Got the mic, audio quality is nice but the adhesive pads wont stay for long time on my Beyerdynamics DT 770 Pro, and the magnet that is on the mics side came off after a year of use, which is a shame for an eighty bucks microphone

    Here's my one-cable approach: Buy headphones with a detachable cable (3.5mm port), like the Philips Fidelio X2 and plug a Vmoda Boompro mic in. There you have your perfect HiFi gaming headset. :)
