    This is brilliant! I'm just restoring an old 1940s tandem cycle and have loads of bits need chroming. It's impossible to get chroming done here in the UK so I'm going to get a kit and do it myself . Polishing is no problem as im a bladesmith. Just cant wait to start.

    Thank you for posting this. Is this system or technic more efficient and cost effective than just dunking the whole item in the solution? I've seen the "Dunking method " and the instructors say "Once you make the solution, you never have to make it again" . I plan to re-plate vintage safety razors and looking for the best way overall to do it. Thanks.

    Hi ... Found your vid; very informative. I want to gold plate an item that has come out of an engine! The item; I have cleaned up as much as I can. How clean do I need to get this item before I attempt to gold plate it? For example; if there is some old oil stains and a little grease on that item; surely the gold plating process is 'not' going to like that!? So, should I soak my item in some sort of acid tank to remove completely all dirt, grease, and oil, and other 'maybe' contaminantes before starting the gold plating process!?
    And, the other quick question is; if I want a really deep finish to the gold plating, can I just keep going 'back-an-forth' over the coating to just make it thicker and thicker, therefor a 'deeper-an-deeper' finish, or is that not the correct way to create a deep quality finish!?
    Would love your thoughts.
    Thank you so much.
    William (Hampshire UK)

    Hello. I've got some old watches that lost their original plating. They were not chromed before. I want to restore the gold. How would this product perform in those areas ? It is very small stuff and tiny corners. I'm also curious to know if different stripping chemicals need to be used to remove whatever they use on watches . Thanks for the video

    @15:37 *you mention "You can't really go wrong over stripping the chrome" but I'll have to assume this isn't the case with fully submerged chrome stripping because if I leave my chrome item in the solution for more than just a few minutes in chrome stripper even at only 5v I end up with the chrome burning and turning a very dark color. If you would like to comment on this, I'd love to learn something new that I may be doing wrong.*

    Im looking for something i can use on firearms,

    I can remove the bluing on the gun easy but ill this compound stick to gun?

    • @GoldPlatingServices
      @GoldPlatingServices  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can plate onto chrome guns, nickel guns, stainless steel guns and regular steel guns. Guns that are blued or coated with anything need to have the coating removed prior to plating. Once down to the bare steel, you can easily plate onto the steel the same way as you plate onto stainless steel. Here is a video showing how we did just that on an AK-47 safety, made of steel: th-cam.com/video/gNBC03rq31k/w-d-xo.html

    Considering getting one your kits. I have a few question though . How durable is this on car emblems ? Considering the front of cars are exposed to road grime, bugs and mutliple washes . What kind of time would you have to spend plating a typical emblem for it to last years ? I want to do this as a business and would hate for people to come back a month later saying it wore off. Secondly could this be done with the emblem still on the vehicle? Do the solutions affect car paint finishes ? Lastly would this work on any chrome plated surface ? Some emblems are plastic and seem to just be painted chrome . If you were to strip back the chrome and reveal only plastic underneath how would you go about gold plating it ? Hopefully you can answer my questions I would love to order a kit very very soon.

    • @GoldPlatingServices
      @GoldPlatingServices  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      DURABILITY: It's has hard as gold plating can possibly be. The thicker (longer) you plate it, the longer the plating will last. If it is taken care of and not polished, it should lost many many years if done properly.
      TIME PLATED: Most automotive platers spend about as much time as we did on this wrench. Check out our other videos that show plating emblems to get a better idea. If you're concerned about longevity, plate it longer. However, this is not a common problem. The only way they're going to come back a month later saying it wore off is if they polished it off or you just tinted it gold (stopped after seconds of gold plating).
      STRIPPING CHROME: A lot of times people see chrome plating bubbling and think it was painted, however that is due to incorrect chrome plating. Underneath every chrome plated layer, there is a layer of nickel (across the board). This means it can be easily plated once you strip the chrome. In the event that you did get down to plastic, somehow, it would not be platable.
      We're happy to answer any and all questions before and after you order. Thanks for the great questions!

    • @TheKazue00
      @TheKazue00 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gold Plating Services thanks for the ridiculously fast reply. Sounds great I will be ordering a kit very soon ! One more question though if you don't mind , how would you go about gold plating things that aren't chrome ? Would you plate it in nickel then gold ? Do you sell a kit for that ?

    • @GoldPlatingServices
      @GoldPlatingServices  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome! If you need to nickel plate something prior to gold plating purely depends on the situation. Typically, nickel is commonly used as a "diffusion barrier" between a more reactive substrate, (such as copper or brass), and the gold plating. Gold plating is porous, especially if it is thin, and the copper or brass can still corrode underneath the gold unless you either plate it thick or nickel plate before gold plating. If the item is stainless steel, this is not necessary as stainless steel does not have issues with corroding typically. If you do determine you need a nickel underplate, this kit will perform the nickel plating. You would just need to get some Bright Nickel Plating Solution along with your kit. Here is a link to that solution: www.goldplating.com/collections/nickel-solution/products/bright-nickel-plate-solution

    • @GoldPlatingServices
      @GoldPlatingServices  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely! Gold plating is all about the prep work. If the piece is dull before plating, it will be dull after. If its shiny before plating, it will be shiny after. Plating onto polished metal is ideal, unless the piece is shiny to begin with (in the case of the wrench or a car emblem).

      @GoldPlatingServices  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Typically you have to polish off all the existing gold prior to replating. However, sometimes you can get away with just plating over it. It's worth a try to do a small area, usually the worst spot, just to see how it looks - if it looks good, plate it. If it doesn't look good, you polish it and plate.

    Can I gold plate flatware for my wedding? This is awesome
    Information. It’s so expensive for 800
    Pc of flatware

    • @GoldPlatingServices
      @GoldPlatingServices  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Absolutely, flatware can be done. Congrats on the engagement! Weddings can be one of the most amazing days of your life. The question would be, do you want to do all the work yourself or would you rather us do the plating for you? Plating 800 pieces would be quite time consuming, simply due to the huge number of pieces. If you'd like, you could shoot us an e-mail with a picture of the flatware you have in mind and tell us what material it's made of (preferably stainless steel if possible) and we can give you our best quote on 800. How long can you use the same solution? Can I use it until its finished or should I change out after every use? Same question for the sleeves. Thank you.

    • @GoldPlatingServices
      @GoldPlatingServices  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can reuse the solution until it is gone. The sleeves can be used until they are destroyed or you feel need changing. Eventually they will wear a hole through or get deformed. Sleeves are only about $1.50 each.

    If I get a burn spot while plating how do i fix it and touching up faded gold how do I go about doing that?

    • @GoldPlatingServices
      @GoldPlatingServices  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you are careful to stay within the voltage guidelines of the equipment you should not have any burn spots. However. if it were to happen it is easy to fix. Simply take a mixture of baking soda and water and make a paste. With a soft cloth gently buff it out. If you get faded gold spots, just clean the surface thoroughly, activate it, rinse it and gold plate it again.

    Oo a grand for a bench power supply and some chemicals?

    • @GoldPlatingServices
      @GoldPlatingServices  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great deal right? Especially considering some of our competitors sell an 8oz bottle of Brush Gold for more than this entire kit. The 8oz Jar that comes with this kit contains enough gold to cover about 1,200 square inches of area to a typical decorative thickness, so you can do a lot of plating. It also comes with a large bottle of Chrome Stripper, Woods Nickel Strike, Surface Activator and Electrocleaner. This kit is unique for many reasons. It really is a complete package that has everything someone needs to get started gold plating onto almost any kind of item that can be brush plated. It is not just a "power supply and some chemicals". Thanks for the comment Mr. Schmoe

    Thank you so much for this video. Is it working on plastic ? Or only metal?

    • @GoldPlatingServices
      @GoldPlatingServices  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! Will only work on metal surfaces. So if it's plastic, it would need to be chrome plated first.

    Can you skip the Chrome stripping and make it Gold Chrome?
    Or what if the metal is black?

    • @GoldPlatingServices
      @GoldPlatingServices  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There is a way that you can plate directly onto the Chrome, (by using completely different chemicals), however the gold plating quickly degrades within a year or so. Plus, there is zero benefits and it does not look better. The proper way to do it is as shown in this video. In fact, it is our opinion that gold platers who started plating directly onto chrome, (back in the late 90's) is part of what killed the automotive gold plating industry. Gold Plating on cars gained a bad reputation because peoples gold packages were looking horrible within a year or so. If done this way, it can last decades if properly taken care of.

    • @GoldPlatingServices
      @GoldPlatingServices  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It is a hardened 24K gold but it is still 24K gold. How long before it wears off depends on two main factors: 1) How thick the gold is plated. 2) How much abrasion it encounters. For example, a wrench would certainly have the gold wear off in the area where it meets with metal, however the area you handle with your hand would depend on how thick you plate the gold. If you plate it thick, it can last many years or even decades if plated thick enough.

    What's the process to gold plate a steel gun slide? Do I need copper or can I just use surface activator then nickel then gold?

    • @GoldPlatingServices
      @GoldPlatingServices  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would plate a steel gun slide the same way you would plate any piece of steel. You would first Electroclean, then Woods Nickel Strike, then gold plate. See our video here for plating onto steel gun parts: th-cam.com/video/gNBC03rq31k/w-d-xo.html We also have other videos showing how. If you have any questions or concerns please e-mail us at info@goldplating.com we'll be happy to assist!

    Hi! Its will work in chromed parts that had started to rust?
    Any kit for doing the complete job in steel? ( removing all the old chrome, nickel and rust, and plate some copper, nikel and the gold, ot even the chrome again? )
    I'm think in restoration off guitar parts.
    Regards.

    • @GoldPlatingServices
      @GoldPlatingServices  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Metals that have rust or corrosion need to be polished to get it down to the bare metal before you plate. Gold plating will only look as good as the surface looks before plating - if its dull before plating it will be dull after, if its shiny before plating it will be shiny after.
      The kit will plate onto steel with no issue as long as you use Woods Nickel Strike as your second step instead of Surface Activator (This is all included in the kit).
      To remove chrome you just use the chrome stripping solution. To remove rust you have to polish it off. You can then activate the nickel and gold plate the piece. There is no need to copper plate onto nickel, which nickel is under every chrome plating job.
      We have lots of customers who restore guitar parts.

    Thanks alot for replying! Y'all are the best! So can I apply gold over bright nickel? For instance if I have raw polished metal sonebody wants gold plated. What would be the steps to gold plate polished metal? For metal would inplare with a nickel or stainless bit?

    • @GoldPlatingServices
      @GoldPlatingServices  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We're happy to help! You absolutely can apply gold over nickel, it is very common. For plating basic metals (nickel, brass, bronze, copper, silver, etc.) you typically pretreat them all the same way: Electroclean, Activate, Plate. The metals that are special case scenarios are Steel/Stainless Steel and Chrome plated items. Steel/Stainless Steel need to be Electrocleaned, Woods Nickel Strike'd and Plated. Chrome items need to be plated as shown in this video (Stripped, activated, plated). The only time you use a nickel bit is if you're using a nickel based solution, such as Bright Nickel or Woods Nickel Strike.
      You may find this video useful regarding plating onto nickel: th-cam.com/video/iktSfq0LDmw/w-d-xo.html

    one more question.
    does the temperature of the item or the temperature of the solutions have an effect to the application?

    • @GoldPlatingServices
      @GoldPlatingServices  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Temperature definitely can affect some solutions, however it does depend on what temperature and what solution. Typically unless you intentionally heat the solution or intentionally heat the item being plated it should not be an issue.
