    They probably should have explained that Pennsylvania Dutch is a misnomer for Pennsylvania Deutsch. The settlers were German, not Dutch.

Too much broth, not enough noodles, and proper homemade pot pie squares are best although bowties will do. In the case of these people, it refers to a region in the Netherlands

      called Dutch if they spoke Dutch, German, Flemish, or whatever. They were German speaking Dutch.

    • @injunsun

      @@abergethirty Nope. While you're right about why some Netherlanders were called Dutch, the Pennsylvania Deutch are **not** from the Netherlands. They are generally Swiss German Mennonites, and Rhine Valley German Amish, among a few other southern German regions.

    *(Answering someone below about the proper term being "PA Deutsch" and not "PA Dutch". I can't get the comment to post under that thread for some reason, sorry!)* I'm Pennsylvania Dutch. My family came here as Palatines from the Rhine in the 1730s. Both my mother and father are PA Dutch, as were all generations before. I was born, raised, and grew up in the PA Dutch community in the heart of PA Dutch country where traditions still exist. We never, ever refer to ourselves as Pennsylvania Deutsch. We already knew we were German and accepted the non-Dutch's misconception that we were Dutch or that "Deutsch" meant "Dutch". We speak PA Dutch (although a dying language), and, sometimes, Hoch Deutsch, although the language is now more prevalent in the Mennonite and Amish communities. Not all PA Dutchmen are Amish or Mennonite, but all Amish and Mennonites here are PA Dutch. To the Amish, we are "English" just like the rest of the world. We call ourselves PA Dutch, Dutchmen, and Dumb Dutchman. The PA Deutsch moniker has become popular in the not-to-distant past, as has the term PA German. The Amish and Mennonites outside of the Old Ordnung in Lancaster, PA are not reliable sources of who we are, what we are, or what we were; they are removed from the founding group and often have little resemblance to the original Amish and Mennonites here beyond their appearance (and that's sometimes different, as well). The Holland Dutch or Austrians to which you refer were originally settled in New Amsterdam in New York, and while a very small amount of them migrated downward, the vast majority of PA Dutch are Germans. So, no ... the term here in Pennsylvania used by those of us who are actually multi-generational PA Dutch is "Pa Dutch", and we're proud of it.

      It isn't a dying language, due to the fact that there are over 200,000 old order amish and over 40,000 old order mennonites, which both constitute the fastest growing groups in the USA.

    Part of my grand mother's family Pennsylvania Dutch. This was a common conversation:
    Her: My Aunt Elaine, see, she was Pennsylvania Dutch....
    - You mean German.
    Her: No, Pennsylvania Dutch!
    - Which is German.
    Her: **SMACK** PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH!
    She also used to make the chicken pot pie (which isn't a pie, but a soup) featured in the video. It was a yearly christmas time tradition for the her to make a huge pot of it. She always complained about cutting up the dough and how long it took. Until one day when I was there helping her make the pot pie and got tired of the knife not cutting through the dough easily enough. So I went and grabbed a pizza slicer. You would have thought I proved to her the sky was green. "I've been making this for over 70 years, and I never thought to use a pizza slicer. This is amazing"

    I live in York, Pennsylvania, my mom cook lots of Pennsylvania dutch, her pot pie is creamier, not soup like, she's the only one in the family that eats chow chow, and we make Schnitz and Knepp with pork not ham. Don't have much to say about Shoofly Pie (I once fed mine to the dog), the name comes from putting the pie on the window sill and the cook would have to "shoo the flies away from the pie"...I won't even talk about scapple, won't go there.

    Pensilvania dutch actually stems from deutch. So they are german immigrants who held on to their extreme beliefs and became an amish community. I figured this out when i heard the speaking german in stead of dutch on 'breaking amish'

      It's an old dialectic of German, too. I live 45 mins away from Amish Country in Northeast Ohio, and took 3 years of German in High School. Being so close, I grew up fairly familiar with the Amish and Mennonite communities, and could never understand what they were saying. My graduate school was in the Amish/Mennonite area, and even as an adult, I can only identify a few of their German words.

      Sparkling Silver Curls Interesting... Seems like a very unique community. I don't know a whole lot about Pennsylvania Dutch culture (beyond knowing the name) but my paternal family is German-American and I recognized just enough stuff that it was confusing when paired with "Dutch" haha. :)

      The rift between Dutch and German is undyingly similar to foreigners. When I tell Americans I'm half Dutch, they most often assume I'm German, because "Dutch" sounds like "Deutsch"; but I have to explain that Deutsch is German for "German." Whereas the Dutch word for German is "Duits." It's hilarious, since most Dutch people think I'm Belgian because of my extremely Southern Dutch accent.

    • @acerlutra
      @acerlutra 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You have no idea what you are talking about. Pennsylvania Dutch is an umbrella term for German speaking people who came to take part in William Penn's holy experiment. There were Catholics, Lutherans and yes, Amish and Mennonites. The Catholic and Lutherans largely assimilated into the surrounding English society, leaving the Amish and Mennonites as the most obvious examples of Pennsylvania Dutch. The Amish were already Amish before they left Alsace Lorraine having split from the Swiss Mennonites, they didn't "become Amish" in America.

    +theylied1776 That's not exactly right. As someone who lives in Lancaster Co. and took 8 years of Pennsylvania Dutch from the neighbors, no one calls them Deutsch, including the PA Dutch themselves. They call themselves Deitsch. The best analogy I can think of is the difference between Middle English and Common English - sure PA Dutch is a variant of German, but the differences are vast. It's likely that the Dutch mishearing came from the original Deitsch, which admittedly does sound similar.

It originated from the Pennsylvania Dutch but it's a regional thing between Pennsyvlania, Maryland, Delaware and that kind of area, even large breakfast chains like IHOP will make it in this neck of the woods. I just think of it like a square somewhat more mild-tasting sausage.

      Anglo Americans are 60% German. There were early Swedish settlers in the Philadelphia area. Germans read pamphlets printed by William Penn and came to America in two waves, the first being before the Revolution. Both Amish and Mennonites were German speaking immigrants. There are some Dutch mostly in New Amsterdam and they did take over the Philadelphia settlement but by and large the Pennsylvania Dutch were and are German in origin. Tiny little Denmark vs huge Germany Switzerland and Austria

      Every PA Dutch style pot pie I've ever eaten (and it's a LOT), is certainly "brothy", but it's still far thicker than that as the broth is the least important part of it, and the thickness of the noodles naturally thickens it up a bit as it sits. But if nothing else, it's not nearly as clear as that broth was. I should've said "watery" more than just "runny". But there was just so much of it compared to the actual contents that 'runny' was the first word that came to mind.

      Bott Boi (what they called pot pie) is just chicken and dumpling with the slicker type of dumpling. It's really quite good. Scrapple and shoo fly pie are both something you had to grow up on (which I did, but I understand why they wouldn't always be appealing). Shoo fly pie needs coffee and if you like to eat the lumps of hardened lumps of brown sugar that form in the bag you'll probably like it. I've never actually seen Schnitz und knepp outside of the Midwest even though it's a very German dish and should be common in penna. if serving applesauce with ham makes sense to you, you would probably like that one as well.

    alright, a couple of things. one, i love the fact there wasn't a lot of "horrible" choices for the team to eat so all they had were pleasant reactions. two, JOHN KELLY IS BACK!!! (sorry, i missed the guy since he's one of the first persons I've ever seen on this channel). three, Dermot and John Sharpson....need i say more?? Dermot just has such great chemistry with the Sharpsons...that or I'm very biased...or just both...

    Just say Amish and Mennonite because that's what the Pennsylvania Dutch are. Wonderful people (great craftsmen too, when I am down there I buy their stuff. Good quality goods) and they speak an unique dialect of 17th century German. A lot of their dishes like Shoofly Pie and scrapple made it into Delaware Valley regional cuisine. Though that scrapple isn't crispy enough

    • @poopoopeepee42069
      @poopoopeepee42069 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No it's really not what PA Dutch are. Theres quite a large number of secular Pennsylvania Dutch people, plus a bunch that have adopted Lutheranism or other forms of non-Anabaptist Protestantism. Amish/Mennonite are not the only kinds of Pennsylvania Dutch there is, its just the only kind that gets reality shows.

    Ok, so I understand that this is inspired by buzzfeed, and that.s ok; if you ask me, every nation should have a channel like this.On the other hand tho, is it ok that they bash every food/culture that is different from theirs ? Everytime I click on a video with food on this channel, all I hear is "EWW" or "disgusting" or "do they really eat this?" I mean, have a little respect for other people & their country`s culture .

    The scrapple was cooked wrong. I bet if I made that scrapple, everyone would have loved it! You’re supposed to fry on medium/high heat on each side until crispy, only flipping once. It’s very delicate when it’s hot and cooking in the pan and will fall apart very easily, so don’t flip until the cooking side is crispy and brown. Then gently flip and brown other side. The thicker you cut it the more mush you get in between, so you have to know how to cut it perfectly. If it’s too thin it’s crispy all the way through and hard to chew and if you cut it too thick it’s like meat porridge in the middle. When you cut it just the right thickness, it’s a creamy center with and extra crispy crust all the way around. It’s so delicious! My grandma is German and we grew up eating it, just as she did.

    Shoo-Fly-Pie is soooo good, Scrapple is good with apple butter, and it technically should be Pennsylvania Deutsch because it’s GERMAN NOT DUTCH, I live in PA I know

  • @wolfhodgkinson6866

    It's not Pennsylvania Dutch. It's Deutsch! German. These people emigrated from Deutschland ... Germany... a long time ago and have retained a great deal of their culture. Thank the English Americans for warping the pronunciation.

    No pickled beet eggs? WHAT THE HELL its the most Pennsylvania dutch thing out there... Also the addition of apple butter, birch beer, bacon gravy and Lebanon bologna would have been a nice touch. And on a side note Pennsylvania dutch are not actually dutch but German somebody messed up the translation of Deutsch back in the day (which means German) and instead put dutch where a large population of Germans inhabited the east and central parts of Pennsylvania.

      Pennsylvania Dutch aren't Amish. They're just descendants of the Germans who immigrated to Pennsylvania. Only about 5% of the Pennsylvania Dutch are Amish. My great grandparents on my mother's mother's side were Pennsylvania Dutch. www.pressherald.com/2014/06/11/real-pennsylvania-dutch-cooking-keeps-stirring-a-native-sons-soul/
