Restoring the original PlayStation (PS1) - Vintage Console restoration & repair

- This Original PlayStation was sent to me to be restored and repaired by a subscriber who didn't have any use for it.
I will restore this broken and yellowed PlayStation. The console doesn't read discs, which is a very common and easily fixable issue with these old consoles.
First, I remove 6 security screws from the base to allow me to separate the two halves then once inside I can start to take it apart properly, first, I removed the power switch then the cartridge ejection lever I then removed all the screws from the motherboard and removed it from the lower casing.
During the disassembly, I found the remains of a spider and a spider nest. It's very common I find bugs inside these old devices, I'm, not sure why, maybe they're dark and warm places?
The capacitor was swollen, in all cases, swelling is due to the buildup of internal gases as part of progressing failure mechanisms. A failing electrolytic capacitor typically generates hydrogen gas as the electrolyte solution begins breaking down. This causes a build-up of internal gas pressure which swells the case.
To fix the disc drive I only had to clean the lens. In some cases, the laser has gone old. You can try adjusting the screw I show to give it more life. It increases the voltage going to the laser and if it's adjusted to the highest voltage at the factory the laser would burn out faster.
I then washed the plastics in soapy water to remove all grime and grease in preparation for the next step which was to soak them in Cream Peroxide Developer 40 Volume and UV light for several days to remove the years of yellowing that has taken place, this process is also known as retr0brite.

I will show you how to remove the yellowing from vintage plastics with the Retr0bright method.
This video will show you how to make your yellowed SNES look almost new again.
Coat the plastic in hydrogen peroxide to fix discoloration. Hydrogen peroxide works well on plastics that have turned entirely yellow instead of in just one spot. Fill a plastic bag with enough hydrogen peroxide to cover the plastic. Stick the plastic in the bag of hydrogen peroxide and lay it out in direct sunlight. Wait 3-4 hours before rinsing it off with clean water.
You can purchase hydrogen peroxide at a drugstore or big box store.
If you’re treating some sort of plastic mechanism, make sure you remove all the parts that aren’t plastic before putting them into the hydrogen peroxide.
You can also use an old toothbrush to scrub the hydrogen peroxide onto the plastic if desired
Thank you for watching my video!

electrolytic capacitors
The failure of electrolytic capacitors can be hazardous, resulting in an explosion or fire. Bipolar electrolytic capacitors which may be operated with either polarity are also made, using special constructions with two anodes connected in series.

The PS1 intro....it's so beautiful
Thank you, I really appreciate it.
👍Well done sir. The PS1 is one of the first consoles that I purchased myself. A lot of fun times.
It really is!, thanks for the visit ❤️
Only long term watchers of restoration eg know that this is a re upload of this restoration
Great job. PS1 was the first console I ever opened, but I just replaced the shell, didn' t fix it because it was functional. I liked the UV light part, and the sabling device, the screwdriver you are using was my first type of screwdriver that I got, I have it as a set and mine is called 'Impacter'. Keep it up.
Was that a DK oldies sticker? Cause then it makes sense 😂
its always cool to see someone repurposing stuff like this old rock and dead bug collection box. never fails to amaze me the stuff people can make.
even though I started with Nintendo consoles back in the '80s, PS1 is the console of my childhood.
Beautiful video. Loved watching it ❤️
Parabéns!!! Excelente trabalho!
Wonderful job. Congrats.
Thank you very much!
14:57 funny, but this is not SCPH-7502 as shown by the sticker. It is SCPH-1002. Cinch connectors, antenne out, and laser it's closer to PSU.
También comenté lo mismo...
Meaning?
The strange housing and PCB is the SCPH-1002 model, and sold with the SCPH-7502 sticker 😳
Great video. Good job

Obrigado eu realmente aprecio isso.
Bonjour,
gran video
Thanks for kind words!
good to see it fixable. almost made a joke at start about all the magic smoke coming out and killing it for good. ;)
Great Video #ASMR
Ironically, back in 2000 when I had my PS1. I also put a Pikachu sticker on it not knowing it was a Nintendo exclusive IP. I only watch the animated show but I was never a Nintendo fan, just a pure Playstation gamer.

The Perfection
Xbox jasper kronos with internal memory.
It randomly lose power no matter if it was boot into xell or dashboard, with or without DVD/HHD.
Sometime, the fan turned of, no image out, but the yellow power light still on. Push the power button will turned it off and another push will not turn it back on. I needed to unplugged powersupply for about10 seconds and plug it back before it can be turn on.
HDD made more screeching noise when it lose power than when it was shut down properly. What do you think is the problem?
Tried switching between rgh 1.2 rgh 3.0, and high wattage xenon power supply didn’t fix it.
If you could I helped me, I would be very thankful and a jasper will be saved from junkyard. I worked on it for 3 months and out of idea now.
Thank you so much! I share this video on facebook
Awesome, thank you! I’m glad you like it.
Ps1 nostalgia
This looks very fishy, no dirt or dust or lint inside , the parts look very clean, but the outside looks dirty but not, looks like its painted on you can see brush marks , iv watch a few from Restoration EG and they looked genuine ,but this one looks 'fishy'?
I was going to say the same. We can clearly see brush marks all over the console shell and if you take a close look at the memory card slots you realize they aren't dirty at all.
My question is why was it smoking?
@@red-man7017 Because of the blown capacitor. or a smoke bomb strategically placed inside and then filmed ??
Dude just took a normal console, wiped his ass with it, then reversed the footage
I've never seen smoke coming out of a console before
you fixed the PS1
I’m looking to restore my old ps1 can I use isopropyl alcohol on the motherboard and psu? I just want to make sure I don’t damage anything
Yes, Isopropyl alcohol removes oils, adhesives, fingerprints, soldering flux, and other contaminants, making it ideal for cleaning electronics. However, it is important to note that only alcohol with a grade of 90% or more should be employed on circuit boards and other internal electronics. Commonly, 99% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is used on electronics for cleaning circuit boards and reworking components (removal of flux). In the US, 91% is common at pharmacies and some use 91%, being careful to dry the board thoroughly, removing any excess water, using canned air or a conditioned air compressor line.
This has a SCOH-7502 sticker. And also why the fake smoke?
that was perfect I had a question, are you Iranian?
Thank you for your answer❤
No, Thanks for the visit❤️
You are a peaceful dude
how much alcohol do you clean your ps1 with?
In my country, when you see electric and smoke run and hide bro. Why didnt you put it away then it started smoking? But awesome restoration keep going maaan 👍💪

Where do you find these things?? Or you purposefully make them that way?..... NOT CRITIZISING!! Just a simple question!!
Sometimes it's from subscribers, sometimes from ebay. And assuming OP has friends i imagine he gets those from them

really sus that all your consoles are covered with the same type of dirt
connecting the device before checking it is a great idea 😂
Sony
Why did you deliberately add the "dirt" on the outside and small stones on the inside? Just to make for a more obvious transformation? You'll lose credit fast walking down this path. A shame really, because your restauration methods are pretty decent.

pathétique vu l'état de la console
1:04 Jeez, why don't you just unplug it? 😕 You're still damaging it with power still going through it. Take your sweet time then.
Sir pls can u gift this for my kids. Pls
It looks like ur just putting dirt on it an saying it broken just too fix it 😄
That’s exactly what is happening here
Yeah, most of them make it like this!
He should get only negative feedbacks, to troll people, or getting clicks this way!
Exactly, "it looks like"
No one can prove it
Edit: looks like this guy below me just did
Tell me you haven't watched fake restoration videos without telling it...
This PS1 had a faulty capacitor which CANNOT happen by just "putting dirt on it".
This is called "dielectric breakdown". The insulation between the + and - foil plates is cracked
Why you throwing shade on the work that’s gone into this if you don’t like it or think it’s fake don’t bother watching the videos 🤷🏻
It's not scph-7502 model, it's scph-1002 or 1001. Fake restoration.
man, just stop trying to be the odd tinkering of fake restorations.

So did the original owner swipe the console along his/ her butt crack to create those nice brown bits for you to remove? Just have to ask as I have my PS1 from September 199? when it was first released in the UK and it has absolutely none of these markings or shite on it to this day.
