    D850 will always be a great camera for stills. It has everything pros and nerds need. Battery life is still better than all full frame mirrorless cameras. Sturdy, high pixel count, amazing images - always a good buy any year.

    I just had my D800 that I bought in early 2013 stolen. 2021 and it was still everything I needed in a camera. Watching this video and several others, I decided to replace it with a used D850 which I expect will last me at least another 10 years. Three days until it is delivered and a new chapter begins. I'm pretty excited!

    You saved me $$$. I own the D850 but I have actually never shot video on it because of the bad reviews. I also own a BMPCC 4K but I wanted a reliable b - roll camera and I considered the RP or R5. BUT like you pointed out, for B roll, that full frame + Nikon's color science is money. Autofocus might suck but in my situation for now; I can take that compromise. The image quality is stellar and on par with any mirrorless camera.

    I can (just about) remember my first proper camera purchase decision, back in the dark old days of film cameras. After a long winter of research, we didn't have the internet back then, I came down to two models. The Canon A1, and the Canon F1. At the time, pros were using the F1, mostly, and advanced amatuer hobbyists and semi pros were using a few models from the A range, the A1 was the most popular because it had AV and TV and fully programmed available plus manual. The ONLY thing you gained by going up to the F1 was that you bought basically, a Sherman Tank of a camera that took a beating in all situations. Here we are, 40 years later, and now, we have a choice between the Z7ii and the D850. History repeats itself, only this time around I am pleased to have bought the modern equivalent of the Canon F1 - the D850. The upgrade from an already great D810 was justified, the image quality is amazing. That is the analogy I am trying to put over. Back in 1980, image quality depended on the lens much more than the body, basically, the same lens would produce the identical image quality on any of the Canons - the cheap AV1, the AE1, the AT1, the A1 or the F1 - identical, no argument. It is not like that now, the camera body, and sensor, influence the outcome far more than we ever say in the days of film. That is why the D850 is truly a legendary camera. Sure, you can go Z7ii instead, but, I suspect most D850's will still be churning out high quality images in 15 or 20 years, no problem. It, like the Canon F1 years back, is built to last. I cannot see the lightweight Z7ii surviving heavy pro use for long. It is a great camera for hobbyists, and semi pro use, like the old Canon A1, but given the price of the D850 is now more affordable than ever, why would you go for the Z7ii. I can get it, if you are just starting out, and have no lenses, but if you have a Nikon kit, with a few lenses, why would you say no to a D850? As it stands, both cameras produce identical image quality, given a good lens is attached to them. My concern is, the Z7ii is the best part of a thousand dollars more, and could prove to be less reliable. Next to the D850, it looks like a toy. Let's hope that is not the case. Irrespective of that, however, if you are interested in stills, the D850 is the Rolls Royce of the photography world, and, it is very hard to see what, or even if, Nikon try to replace it.
    Get one, before Nikon are tempted to discontinue it to make room in the lineup for some other mirrorless. I have a feeling that D850's in good condition will continue to change hands at decent prices, for many years after it becomes impossible to get a new one. It is that good.

      100% Agree. I Really hope mirrorless dosent take off. Surly they could of continued to develop mirror cameras. I Feel they are pandering more now to the current youtube/instagram video generation rather than genuine photographers or people who just want a camera for taking photos. I Sold my D750 on Tuesday and have bought a D850 today. Hopefully if they are to keep pushing mirrorless on us they will make a DSLR version, possibly the coming D880.

    yep you earned my sub. I've been debating between a D850 or a Z6ii but I realize I need both and thats due to use cases that are going to make me money. I need the video capability of the Z6ii but the AF and high resolution of the D850. I know Nikon is going to come out with a mirrorless flagship soon but I agree that it's gonna be 6500$ at the least which is outside of my budget. If they make a mirrorless D850 replacement I can move over to that down the road. Thanks for the sensible down to earth points

      Isn't the z7ii pretty much a mirrorless D850?? 46megapixel, iso 64.. Ive been looking at it and reassuring myself over and over that I dont need it, I have a sony mirrorless for video and the D850 for photos and theres literally nothing I cant capture and theres not a big enough benefit to combine the two and spend THAT much more money...

    • @Raevenswood
      @Raevenswood 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE not really. only in megapixels but not in AF performance or state of the art-ness in comparison to what the D850 was when it hit the market in 2017. I’m not sure if you have seen Steve Perry’s channel or not but he’s a wildlife photographer and he did a review of the Zii camera for wildlife use and he compares them to the D750 and 780 and I think that’s about right. I think it’s possible for Nikon to update the firmware to make the AF better in the Z6ii/7ii but right now there are some issues like in high frame rate extended mode it shows a slide show of the last shot taken in the EVF rather than a live view so you could lose track of the subject you are tracking if it’s moving fast(not sure that is something that firmware will address). Also there are some bugs with AF moving to the background and getting stuck there etc... other mirrorless cameras from Sony and canon don’t have that problem at the moment and have much more advanced functions like eye tracking of birds and wildlife in general. The Z cameras have eye AF but it only works on people or domestic pets like dogs and cats right now. Nikon already released a firmware update that vastly improved the Z6/7ii but they still aren’t really competitive yet. I’d love something that could at least track as good as a D850 or better but in mirrorless ... I might just be patient and see what Nikon does in the next year ... a Z6ii checks most of my boxes except for the high frame rate situation and I put in an order for one ... I was just noticing used D850 prices aren’t much more than a Z6ii at the moment so I could pick one of those up to use with the 600 f/4 I got a steal of a deal on. Although I’m not sure that’s a wise investment at this point ... my brain hurts lol

      I switched to Z 2 months ago. I got an FTZ adapter and kept all F lenses that have autofocus with the adapter. The rest I sold. I can clearly see the benefit of the new mount and how easy it is to not just use F an Z lenses on the new bodies but also now get older M42 lenses with a cheap adapter. The only thing that's somewhat awkward is the battery life. I was used to taking about 900 shots per charge and now it's down to around 400. Still, I think Z is superior in terms of autofocus, focus tracking, face/eye detection etc. Nikon did an amazing job keeping their ergonomics, working out all the software and making all F lenses available with an FTZ adapter. The switch is easy. BTW I am not into video also.

    This was a super helpful review. I'm not looking at replacing a D850, but rather deciding between purchasing a D850 and a z7ii. I primarily shoot wildlife (and almost exclusively stills). Any reason you'd give the edge to the z7ii? I'm kinda leaning toward a D850 for now, and in 5-10 years, I assume mirrorless tech will have evolved more to make the switch then and have it be a significant upgrade, while the DSLR technology is *pretty* peak in the D850. Also I have exclusively F mount lenses and am not super interested in investing in Z at this point.

    • @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE
      @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well if money is no object, the z7ii definitely has more processing power and so does have an edge. I wouldn't make the argument that the D850 is a BETTER camera, but that its still a GREAT camera that can easily be used in a professional environment. But, the z7ii will have faster tracking - it'll clear the buffer quicker.. But then again, D850 batteries will last WAYYYYYY longer and if you use the QXD cards, you can barely hit the buffer anyway. If you dont want to have to buy all new lenses and you said you've already got Fmount lenses, I would say get that D850 and it'll be good for 4-5 more years while mirrorless cameras mature even more. Looking at that Sony a1, Nikon is going to have to answer to that thing eventually and when those features make it into a $3000 body rather than the $6500 one, it'll be time!

  • @cjones7246

    Thank you for the video. I’m absolutely amazed by the quality of the photos I take with my new D850. You mentioned a great battery life? I’m very disappointed with mine. I mainly take landscape shots and since moving to the D850 from the D750 a few months back I now mainly use Live View (it’s amazing) which means one battery charge will last 4-6 hours taking roughly 200-300 shots. So no where near the shots mentioned in the manual and that you get. Do you ever use live view? If so, how’s the battery life then? Also, the rubber cover on the side are really annoying as they pop out on a regular basis which I’m sure does not help the claim made around dust proof? Thank you.

    • @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE
      @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ahhh yes, live view essentially turns the D850 into an early mirrorless camera (still with perfect focus, even if its super slow and hunts from time to time), but as you may be aware, even new mirrorless cameras suffer from poor battery performance. Those screens simply suck the batteries life force away!
      I DO use live view if my subject is perfectly still and I want the very best focus imaginable (contrast shift focus is more effective than what the viewfinder uses, called "phase detect autofocus." Contrast detect is better where phase detect is MUCH faster. )
      So yeah, its live view killing your battery. Its also helping you get the best shots..

    What happens is micro 4/3 come out with a 60MP sensor, beat that crop factor :) great video though, finally found a video that explained full frame with high megapixels (cropped in) can look like a crop sensor with low megapixels.
    People just generally do MP comparisons of photos at the same equivalent focal length, and of course they usually look the same, only enlarged for a print for e.g. you can tell, but no one goes into the benefits of cropping. Because the photography style im into bird photography, you always crop, even with my cheap P1000 with 3000mm I still crop. Your video came up in my recommendations and glad it did because it's a good video. BUT, time and time again people say that crop sensors reach further on a given length lens compared to full frame. It is just not true. A 200mm lens is a 200mm lens no matter what sensor you have, it doesn't magically convert itself to 300 or 320mm. The only reason a lens brings the subject closer on crop sensors is because your field is... cropped.

    Thanks for the video! Personally I'm one of those who buys a camera for the photos it produces, I couldn't care less about the video feature. I Have just bought a D850 & I'll never-ever-use it for taking videos. I Also much prefer the bigger, bulkier size of the D850/DSLR's in comparison to the mirrorless cameras. Yes they do produce fabulous photos but they are not that much better it would make me change to mirrorless. I'm hoping that if they are to keep pushing mirrorless onto us they will at least make a mirrorless DSLR, maybe the much rumored D880?

      I actually like the size and weight also. It helps stabilize a bit!!
      A DSLR by definition has a mirror, though, so there can never be a mirrorless DSLR camera.
      It’s not the mirror that makes a camera great, though! It’s the sensor, precision, lenses and user experience. So if you never stop loving your D850, you’ll never need another camera!!!

      Video mode represents almost nothing in the price, otherwise you wouldn't have it in cheap cameras (and that's why they don't pay video tax), why would they produce 2 versions whereas you just have to ignore it (as you do...).

    • @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE
      @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the video mode uses the same sensor and since you wouldn't want to get rid of 'live view' for the rare occasion you want to hold your camera over your head to get pictures, the video software is basically already there. Plus, they're using the same software thats already been written, so there would nothing to remove from a model to make it cheaper. PLUS, all the things that make a camera more capable to make videos, like faster sensors or now dual sensors, ALSO benefits taking pictures, like faster burst, or all the new tracking and eyeball focus features. I thought those seemed gimmicky when they first started, but after using eyeball focus a bit; holy shit. I dont do a ton of portraits, so its not part of my work flow, but its incredible none the less.

    Question sir. Had a D750 for years. I shoot with mainly manual lenses. I am doing 10% video, of subjects, not blogging. So will be focusing through a 7" additional monitor. • @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE
      @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, absolutely. If you’re going to be shooting manual than like I said, the quality of the picture that comes out of this camera is VERY good! And even the autofocus is extremely accurate for initial focus, it’s just the continuous tracking that tends to hunt. So if you’re staying in control of it, than this is the camera you want.

      It took reading a bunch of reviews before I finally saw someone say that yes, the D780 does have focus shift shooting. It also has hybrid focus points in its live mode, so they’ve sort of combined the Z cameras and the DSLRs with that one. As suspected, telling the shutter button to record in 'video mode' only performs that function when you have live view turned on on the back screen, but in order to have Snap Bridge connected, you have to turn live view off. D850 doesn't have a video mode as a physical switch anywhere, so when you tell snap bridge to hit the shutter button it takes a photo.
      Snap Bridge DOES do video with the Z6 and Z7 cameras, its the same app, so its built into the app, they specially make it not work on DSLRs for some reason.

      The battery life is better in the D6, but carrying an extra battery is pretty standard and no big deal, particularly when you consider the weight of the D6; that camera will wear out your arm.

And the guy there is clear that although Sony cameras seem to have a slight edge on their autofocus and other technologies, when he takes those cameras apart, it seems their weather sealing does not perform nearly as well as any pro level Nikon. So if you go out in bad weather, or get your equipment dusty - I am still a massive fan of the D850. However - something like the a7RIV will indeed have a slight edge on autofocus tracking and megapixels.
      In my personal opinion, mirrorless will be the future, but I want one more generation to come around before I consider it my next '5 year camera.' I have these small caster wheels on some of the flight cases we use when we travel for shows, and they get stuck in thresholds or if you have to push them down the street they’re pretty much a bummer; the kind of wheels where a zip tie on a concrete floor can stop you. But then we built our latest dollys for the truss out of 6” casters and those things roll like a dream!!

    Awesome review, i think for price D500 has better value isn't it..?

    • @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE

      I guess it depends on use case.. Its functionally the same camera, even the buttons and settings are all in the same spots.. But 45mp vs 24mp is a pretty significant upgrade - and full frame VS DX changes the way you shoot, AND the 4k if you use video at all is cropped pretty hard on D500... So if none of those things are an issue, then yes the D500 is a far better value since its basically the same camera.

    Why are cameras so expensive I wanted to buy a camera as a hobby as I have bought acreage in the south coast Australia and there's many beautiful location beaches national.parks wildlife I just saw the price for this camera $5,000 are they serious it's just a camera🤔🤔🤔

      Well, to be fair, this is a top tier professional camera. Nikon makes entry level cameras for a hobby.
      It would be like asking why cars are so expensive and only looking at a Lamborghini, I just want to take it out to the coast and drive around. They make the Toyota Carola for that!:)

      Its a little annoying. I mean, I KNOW the cameras are capable of doing that. But such is life. Im sure I'll buy this fancy pants Z9 once its out because I just won't be able to stop myself. But man, all new lenses, what an incredible hill to climb.

      I just found a thing called "Camranger 2" that solves the video starting problem. But its got its own problem in that it costs $350... camranger.com/product/camranger-2/

    • @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE
      @SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@YeahBuoy So my response to all of that is that I am not looking for a safe long term return with this particular bet on MVIS. I recognize that youre looking at the technical analysis and the fundamentals and their lack of income. But what Im looking at is the EV changeover and how it is inevitable. Im looking at safety features that I personally think will be mandated for level 3 and above driverless, and I think its going to be LiDAR. So Im betting on this technology entering the world, and looking at Microvision as the company with the best version of it.. Sometimes fundamentals win out, sometimes large changes in the world do.. Its a bet!:)
