Viewers intending on visiting Ireland need to avoid everything in this video, tourist traps don't even scratch the photo opportunities of the country....or the pubs.
Thanks--- because of this tutorial, I definitely got to go to Ireland! Subsequently I've been watching a lot of landscape tutorials by Thomas Heaton and now I'm falling in love with that particular genre for my photography... wish me luck.
Re: 13:00 - 14:00 - This comes from Nikon sort of preferring to err on the safe side by showing you the maximum duration of the time-lapse with the current interval and recording duration settings. This means that your actual shutter speed is disregarded in this "safe" calculation and the shutter speed of an infinitesimally short duration is assumed instead. Given that the sequence starts from the word "go", i.e. at 00:00:00 (and not 00:00:01), you'd end up with 61 exposures for the first minute and 5*60=300 exposures for the remaining 5 minutes. In total, this would give you 361 frames, divided by 24 equals 15.0416 seconds. Usually, you'd round the figure down; here, however, Nikon again prefers to give you the maximum by rounding up to the nearest tenth, hence the 15.1 seconds time-lapse. Hope this helps ;-).
Mother of all that's holy, I won't recover anytime soon from seeing you drive straight through the roundabout at the start of the video. Nonetheless, enjoyed the video and always enjoy seeing my country through other's eyes. Nice job! Happy New Year you guys!
Haha, I still don't know how multi lane roundabouts work. Do you stay in the outer lane only when you are turning off the immediate exit and use the middle lanes when you need to go further than 90 degrees? I seems the easiest way would be to make them all one lane and there isn't the confusion of the two or three lanes.
Great video I am really enjoying the videos. I have always enjoyed the BTS but in between it was disappointing that there was less content . However your new content is great . Glad to see fStoppers are back in action.
enjoyed that…glad you guys had good craic on your visit (and lived to tell the tale after blasting through roundabouts and your mad antics on the edge of the world in county Clare)…hurry back soon
I like a lot your video and I watch over and over again. Don´t pay attention to some few pedantic comments below. The video is good but, most important, it is fun and inspirational and it helps a lot those like me who just got the D850 and are still getting used to it. Thanks again for sharing and for the good mood!
I noticed a poor battery performance myself initially. But after doing some manual reading, I realized that the Bluetooth and WiFi functions are on by default. Once I turned off these two features or simply placing the camera on airplane mode, the battery life lasted longer than my D810.
I enjoyed taking the trip with you, thank you for posting and information about the Nikon 850 great full frame camera, I have the Nikon 500 which I need to learn more about it, I subscribed to your channel to learn more about Nikon cameras
@13:48 the timelapse is complicated indeed. You should set the interval to 2.6" because 1.6" + 1" = 2.6". I know it's weird but that's how nikon's interval shooting works.
Pro Tip: When you are in a foreign country on a (possibly) once in a lifetime opportunity to photograph, perhaps don't venture out with a battery that's half depleted and no back up battery on hand. And it would probably help if this is your first time using the camera to have brought the manual. Most modern cameras are pretty intuitive, but I've bumped my head on a feature or two on a new camera every time, and having the manual helps. Especially when doing complex stuff like time lapses.
I lived in London for three years. Every evening with music I had with my friends had that song somewhere near the end. Every single one. Which is fine, it's a good song and one that if you sing poorly is still good.
At 15:10, what camera did you use to film yourselves? The background was in focus, I hate panasonic AF since they're not that good, looks like you need articulating screen and dual pixel from canon for better self recording vlog footages.
I've been using the D810 for a while now and I love it. I've had no plans to upgrade...until I saw this. Thanks for the informative video and I love the bit when you and the girls discover you have a nice suite, I'd be the same.
Yes, a great review of how arguably the best DSLR ever made compares to a cell phone and film. It was interesting to watch but really sells the camera short when user error/inability fails to do it justice. Would you watch a car review from a 9 year old without their driver's license? He's a very capable photographer but I think he fell short this time. Just my opinion.
Like thinking the electronic VR is meant for panning... Or not even checking which lens you brought.. and then dropping the wrong cap in the water and don't even bother to retrieve it.. or having -E- displayed (for Empty card) :D :D :D
Ha , that song at the bar in Dublin is Noel Gallagher's /Oasis iconic , "Don't Look Back in Anger." They were playing it all over the place in Britain as it became a bit of a theme song after the horrific Manchester bombing at the Ariana Grande concert last May but it has been a staple party song for years. It was lovely to see Ireland even in the rain!
As a new D850 owner based in Ireland, I loved the review. As usual, sorry about the weather but it was December! Come back in May or June and the cliffs of Moher will look fantastic. And the craic will be even better
Awesome review, just got a D850 and the Tamron 24-70 based on your reviews; keep up the GREAT work you all do! Thank you a thousand times over, having more photography fun than ever. Bring your videos to DetroitMI! #amazingstreetphotography
Great video. I have a D810, but it's so tempting to go for the D850. Please come to Liverpool to do a review. The folk are the same as the Dubliners, because of our Irish connection, but our architecture is amazing. You'd love it.
Thanks for the great video. I just bought my D850 and am trying to learn all that it does. I'm coming off a D750 and I was wondering if you have any videos to help us familiarize ourselves with all that it does and how to set it up. The manual I printed is like 3 inches thick and I suck at reading manuals. Thanks Sean
I think i figured out what makes the difference in the videolength Nikon is giving you. You have set the Intervall to 1s and the exposure to 1,6s. What would make sense is that a Photo is taken for 1,6s and the a break of 1s is made and then a foto and so on. However it seems so that Intervall to 1s means that the Camera wants to take a picture after every second and so it plans to take 360 Pictures in six minutes. But because the exposure is 1,6 seconds the second picture can´t be made, because the first one isn´t already finished. Next Intervall and with it the next pic fires after 2s so you end up with 1,6s exposure and 0,4s break and so you end up at round about 7,5s of timelaps video. Funfact: Canon seems to have the same problem and i have absolutly no idea why you would do this like this -.- Hope my english isn´t to bad :)
I recently upgraded from a Nikon 810 to the 850. Have you heard or experienced that the ISO settings are different. If I were out on a bright day with my 810 I would be at 100 or lower. With the 850 I might be at 200-250 ISO with the same light. Wondered if this is just the way it is or if there is something I am not doing correctly.
Really good job putting this together! Nikon is back in the game. Look like a good allrounder for travel in all shooting situations, especially low light :)
Hi Patrick, liked the vloggy review.!, in time lapse mode I also had similar doubt until I found that interval = shutter speed + time between two shots. So your interval should always be greater than shutter speed ( I feel at least 1 second more) to avoid any time related gliches and buffer issues.
As D850 owner I have some things to say. Focus peaking is great for manual lenses ;) Snap bridge is BAD! Also D750s wmu, Nikon can't work out how to make good app. Silent shooting is okayish, AF is just slow, I am using it to shoot silent concerts.
Eclectic, different, quirky but quite useful video. There are plenty of "straight" or standard review videos, and those are also good, but your content adds value. Thanks.
Awesome review. Thanks for confirming my thinking on how these cameras compare to medium format. How does the image quality compare when you go below the base ISO? Does it get even better or does it degrade like when you go high?
Patrick....it seemed that the weather got to you.......lol......dude you were in IRELAND!! Have a blast....enjoy the WEATHER...and go back again and again.
We were there for 3 days I think? It was amazing. We ate at Michelin rated restaurants and enjoyed all the shopping and touristy stuff. We just happened to arrive in Galway the night of some infamous "Christmas Party" the colleges all throw. Basically it's the last night everyone is in town before the holidays and the streets are crazier than normal.
Hi! I am thinking to get d850 for wedding video shoot . What lens will be good on budget? I have dx 50mm 1.8G and 70-300mm Nikon. Are they good for video.
I honestly don't know. I just grabbed an old strap we had sitting in one of our cabinets. I just didn't want to walk around Dublin with a D800 badge on my camera strap but normally I do use the OEM straps. -P
Sigma 24-105 on d810 eats batteries as well, I easily use three a day (stabilization holds the lens in position for about a minute after each shot). Dual micro usb charger a good accessory.
Thanks for this cool and informative review! The zoom at about 8:43, you didn’t use the in body time lapse, but interval shooting and did it in post, did you...? And: Happy New Year 2018 🎉🍾🥂🎈
Great video: informative and funny. Maybe in your next one, you add portraits too? Even after asking that I will add : one of the great parts of this video is that it does not focus on portraits
I tried to get Kirsten to do a portrait but she wasn't feeling it....I did shoot her in the last video we did with the D850 only it has the 70-200 lens.
Totally agree with your comment regarding ISO's constantly going up in new cameras, but not coming down..... For me, lower ISO would be Much more useful, especially for landscapes. Gotta say I was probably more disappointed than you about having to shoot the review with the Sigma. I just got the Tamron 24-70 G2... Was really please for a second to see how well it did, then let down when you revealed the cap switch.... Who set that up....??? Good vid.... Looking forward to the rest of the month.... Thanks.
yup i noticed the battery performance is weaker than the D810 and yeah also the focus peaking in 4K is disabled and can't use it and that sucks. But have you tried the AF fine tuning in camera and how good is it ?
Patrick, can you explain Nikon’s new radio flash system please? Can I still use the D850 to fire my 910 flash by IR as a slave if I use my 600 as the master flash on the camera? Just wondering if I have to now change all my Nikon flash units...
I honestly haven't owned a speedlight since the SB800. I went Profoto and continued to use my Nikon speedlights and then bought Yongnuos because they were as good and super cheap.
Great video and nice to see the D850 in action. The one thing I am not blown away by from ANY camera at the moment is high ISO performance. I know you were very happy with it on the D850, but for me it was just typical grainy imagery from about ISO 6400 onwards. Although better than most, still not good enough. This seems to be where manufacturers have hit a technology hurdle. I would love to see a truly clean ISO 6400 and almost clean ISO 12800 and then who cares after that?
I was waiting for someone to notice that. I actually screwed up and missed the focus somehow and so the whole image was soft. So I took one of the still images I had and masked the castle into the 4k slightly out of focus timelapse. It came out pretty cool with a sort of tilt shift lens effect but it's a combo of soft timelapse with a sharp 46mp still photo blended in.
- Regarding the battery life: It's probably the wireless (wifi and/or bluetooth) connections being on. Turning on airplane mode dramatically improved battery life in my experience. - The timelapse output time was calculated with the assumption there's no delay between exposures. 360/24 (seconds/fps) = 15. If your exposures were less than a second and there was no exposure delay, it would've been a 15 second timelapse. Weird, but that's where the 15 seconds came from. - Focus peaking doesn't work while electronic VR is on (as well as the various modes you mentioned in the video).
I'm still trying to work that out but pretty sure he just doesn't know how to use the camera.. AT ALL. I've never set an interval less than my exposure.. he used 1 second interval but with 1.6 second exposure... is this something used it in other intervalometers because I've always known to set the interval longer than your exposure.
I always thought the interval was the time between the exposures but apparently the interval is the entire time of both the shutter and interval. Ideally then you would want the interval to be equal to the shutter speed so you can get the most amount of photos in the shortest amount of time.
The D850 captures flicker-free timelapse direct to the 46mp sensor I suppose like recording video in short intervals. No flicker. I got a feeling this is a battery intensive process? Can you turn off the live view monitor during time lapse capture?
Interesting review. I noticed most of the 'selfie' video shots you were totally out of focus. Is that because of a setting, or the camera doesn't work properly?
I really enjoyed that piece, particularly as we seem to both have the same premium beat playlist in rotation... Kudos on getting workable video whatsoever out of the Trinity Library as well. I've had to shoot some events in there, and it's an absolute nightmare to get usable video without a controlled lighting rig, which obviously won't work a) because of their rules around the books, and b) it's an event, not a commercial. It's one of the most stunning rooms I've ever been in, and it's nigh-on impossible to get it looking well.
What camera and lens do you use? Have you had to shoot in here at night? I think the ambient light from the windows helped a lot but it was also really overcast and rainy so it was pretty minimal lighting to begin with.
5D mkIV with the stock 24-105 f4.0. I was shooting an event at dusk, moving around the crowd, and grabbing guests looking at a new display, so lighting was a no-no. To be honest, the stuff looked fantastic, because it's such a beautifully contrasting room, but I had to push the ISO hard to get a serviceable image. Neat Video was able to clean it all up for me, but it was a bit of a pain to take the extra time to run the plugin, given I had an almost immediate turnaround deadline. I'm also probably a bit bitter because I didn't get any lead-in time to shoot establishers, because you could just sit and shoot that room all day...
My heart was in my mouth when she ripped through that roundabout looking the wrong way. Cool review though!
Viewers intending on visiting Ireland need to avoid everything in this video, tourist traps don't even scratch the photo opportunities of the country....or the pubs.
Great video guys and a great review of the new Nikon. Love these types of videos that ye make. Can’t wait for more👍🏼
So stoked for all the upcoming videos!
Thanks Pat for spending time for a real hand on review, unlike so many other channels, they all stay in studio talking about specs!!!
Thanks--- because of this tutorial, I definitely got to go to Ireland! Subsequently I've been watching a lot of landscape tutorials by Thomas Heaton and now I'm falling in love with that particular genre for my photography... wish me luck.
I'm subbed to Thomas too! Wow what a coincidence! :)

rsa.ie/RSA/Road-Safety/Education/Road-safety-tips/Using-roundabouts/ Same rules all over Europe, invert for driving on the right in France etc.
Tom Breathnach they did exactly what your instructional video shows a 0:17. So what is the complaint about.
@@EDHBlvd they didn't look right

How did you get that poor resolution out of the medium format? scanned the print instead of the negative? used a flatbed with focusproblems?
I am about two minutes in but medium format? It's a d850

That's a poor ass scan of the medium format shot
If you want to shoot long exposure during the day, you need an ND filter. You don't need lower ISO if you bring an ND filter.
Or a whole stack of ND's :) Like this situation- www.viewbug.com/photo/79914404 .. never improved so made the best of it.
Yup. I’ve got a 10 stop ND. Let’s me shoot 2-3 min exposure mid day with sunshine...
Great review. I'm getting a D850.
Patrick your face is never focused, it's always the background in focus. This review is fun to watch tho.
Pro Tip: When you are in a foreign country on a (possibly) once in a lifetime opportunity to photograph, perhaps don't venture out with a battery that's half depleted and no back up battery on hand. Nicely done as always Patrick!! l LOVE the scarf protip!!
Two Shea Films very great video ! Nice view and mood !
Nice to see a camera review done by a competent photographer! cheers
Great review in real conditions. Looking forward to the next one.
Very insightful review, great job!
I've been using the D810 for a while now and I love it. I've had no plans to upgrade...until I saw this. Thanks for the informative video and I love the bit when you and the girls discover you have a nice suite, I'd be the same.
lol! I really enjoyed this video. Lauren was a delight, and I loved the way you guys interact together. Nice.
Just a suggestion. Learn the camera, THEN do a review.
It's a "review"....not a tutorial...!!!!
Or not even checking which lens you brought.. and then dropping the wrong cap in the water and don't even bother to retrieve it.. or having -E- displayed (for Empty card) :D :D :D
hahahahaha
Travis Nutley u nailed it
One of the best reviews of the Nikon D850 I've watched. Plenty of practical and genuine insight. Thanks for sharing.
@27:00 this is what happens when the only thing you have to keep you warm is beer
I wish all camera reviews were like this! Good job
Fun review! I was in Ireland last year and it was very enjoyable to see your experience :)
As a new D850 owner based in Ireland, I loved the review. As usual, sorry about the weather but it was December! Come back in May or June and the cliffs of Moher will look fantastic. And the craic will be even better
Thanks for the tip, Garrett!
Such a great review. The best one I have seen in a long time in youtube.
Great video. I enjoyed the balance of technical real world usage and just having a good time in a beautiful place.
Very well thought-out video, nice job!
Awesome review, just got a D850 and the Tamron 24-70 based on your reviews; keep up the GREAT work you all do! Thank you a thousand times over, having more photography fun than ever. Bring your videos to DetroitMI! #amazingstreetphotography

how crazy those people are xD awesome! nice review of the D850! greetings from Germany
Hope you enjoyed Ireland guys! Shots look great, really impressed with that low light performance! Little weird how quick the battery cropped out
The battery was half way depleted when I left but I figured even a half used battery would last half the day (they do for weddings at least).
Beautiful presentation mate! cheers
Unbelievable Amazing work, great editing👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 and with a Sigma
Kudos to your female friend for even bringing out the infamous Contax medium format 👏🏾 Great real world D850 review as well.
Great review! Keep it coming
Nice vid just one question , the image at 04:48 is taken straight out of the camera or it has been edited?
Great content. Keep it coming!
Thanks for the great video. I just bought my D850 and am trying to learn all that it does. I'm coming off a D750 and I was wondering if you have any videos to help us familiarize ourselves with all that it does and how to set it up. Random and rather unrelated question, I know, but can anyone tell me the name of the track played in the video beginning at 8:43? TIA!
@14:49 im maybe late to the party by a few years lol... but you cant use S1 and focus peaking at the same time.
I think i figured out what makes the difference in the videolength Nikon is giving you. You have set the Intervall to 1s and the exposure to 1,6s. As D850 owner I have some things to say.
Focus peaking is great for manual lenses ;)
Snap bridge is BAD! Also D750s wmu, Nikon can't work out how to make good app.
Silent shooting is okayish, AF is just slow, I am using it to shoot silent concerts.
I just got the same Benro tripod. I absolutely love it. And my D850 with a 70-200 is solid as a rock. Huge upgrade over the manfrotto BeFree
Eclectic, different, quirky but quite useful video. There are plenty of "straight" or standard review videos, and those are also good, but your content adds value. Thanks.
Good content and a good video. As a new D850 owner I found this informative.
Fantastic video! Really enjoyed it!
Please don't leave your plastic rubbish (lens cap) in the sea.
I tried to get it but it was unreachable...
Fstoppers Fair enough
you should have swam in the freezing cold water to save the planet and your lens cap ;)
you should have tried harder... GOSH...
Fair enough, I'm glad you tried, that was apparent from the video. 🙂
Great video Patrick. Kind of wish you'd gotten a better experience of Galway though, it's a bit nicer before 12am ha ha!

pronounced Gawlway :)
I am also interested in the travel bag you carry. Can you tell me which bag is thay?
Awesome video. Thinking about this camera for my tech channel
when you said "It's no Sony A7"..how would you compare them? what aspect did you like more on the Sony?
When you say "so much energy in the air" (19:19) = man were drunk. LOL
Nice honest review. Thanks!
enjoyed it! you are correct that NOBODY discusses the lower ISO's! thanks for giving me the idea to explore new territory.
Hi! I am thinking to get d850 for wedding video shoot . What lens will be good on budget? I have dx 50mm 1.8G and 70-300mm Nikon. Are they good for video.
Hi can you I ask you what brand is the green straps that you have it on your camera? It looks great, I would like to get one for myself. Thanks!
I honestly don't know. I just grabbed an old strap we had sitting in one of our cabinets. I just didn't want to walk around Dublin with a D800 badge on my camera strap but normally I do use the OEM straps. -P

Thanks for this cool and informative review! The zoom at about 8:43, you didn’t use the in body time lapse, but interval shooting and did it in post, did you...? And: Happy New Year 2018 🎉🍾🥂🎈
None of the timelapses here were taking with stills in interval shooting, they were all taken with video only. I hate making timelapses from stills.
13:22 I thought I was hearing a car alarm outside my house, paused the video to find out that its from your location xD
great video! the cliff is where GAMES OF THRONES taken, right? Keep up your excellence, FSTOPPERS!!!
What music did you use starting at 6:27 ? Great video!
Great video: informative and funny. Maybe in your next one, you add portraits too? Even after asking that I will add : one of the great parts of this video is that it does not focus on portraits

Fstoppers Thanks for following up my question. Cheers.
Your idea about iso 30 and below is a really good suggestion.
I would love to see a truly clean ISO 6400 and almost clean ISO 12800 and then who cares after that?
please tell me the track in the background which was played at 21:45
Fantastic Review, to see the camera in the real world was great,
This was a very entertaining review!
Getting my D850 in two weeks. From Ireland myself and I must say I really did enjoy this review. Cheers
It's not Gallway it's Gaulway - Galway 😂
great video! why the iPhone is always focusing on the background an not on your face!?
What's the depth of field effect on the time lapse footage starting at the 22:51 mark?
I always thought the interval was the time between the exposures but
apparently the interval is the entire time of both the shutter and
interval. Ideally then you would want the interval to be equal to the
shutter speed so you can get the most amount of photos in the shortest
amount of time.
So now we get treated to a repeat video ;) ;)
The D850 captures flicker-free timelapse direct to the 46mp sensor I suppose like recording video in short intervals. No flicker.
I got a feeling this is a battery intensive process?
Can you turn off the live view monitor during time lapse capture?
Well for the most part, the LCD screen never lights up so I don't think it's drawing much power in general.
Fstoppers,
Okay, so the LCD is not expending energy displaying black pixels during the intervals between frame capture. Thanks.
🙂
Interesting review. I noticed most of the 'selfie' video shots you were totally out of focus. Is that because of a setting, or the camera doesn't work properly?
Love your content! But waiting for the photographing the world episodes...
Crappy scan and dust on the Contax's "sensor"...yeah...I'll take the bait.
