I love how Keith starts off as formal broadsheet journalist in his intro but by the half way point he's gushing about Portal 2 as his true gamer self like the rest of us!
Portal 1 is good but it's only an hour long. Portal 2 is not only five times longer in its base, but it also has a level editor which gives any game, but especially this game, infinite replay value. It would be cool if you guys did a one off where both of you make your own test chamber in the editor to have the other play!
Fantastic podcast! I've been enjoying playing through Portal 2 for the first time, and it's been an absolute delight. The whole Aperture science lab coming to life also mixes well with a book I recently read, The Shining, for The Bonus Points Book Club. (Thanks for the pick, Joe!) All of this meshing well with my new interests in this kind of sci-fi horror, I guess. And Keith was a great guest! I've loved reading stuff on games on The Guardian, and I'd love to check out your books sometime! The discussion of Portal 2 as a sequel reminds me a lot of Super Mario Galaxy 2 - both games experimenting with new ideas on an existing formula. Super pumped for upcoming games! Time to see if I can borrow my friend's copy of Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver...
I played through Portal 1 & 2 last year and portal 1 was already a 10/10 and I didn't know how it could get better, but portal 2 became a 11/10 in the first 2 minutes (primarily cause of Wheatley lmao)
Im so excited to see an episode about this game! I’m 20 and I just got into video games for the first time last year. I just played portal 2 a few weeks ago and I was AMAZED by how well designed this game was, ESPECIALLY considering its age.
i started playing portal 2 like a week after this video was uploaded and i got OBSESSED I started reading all the lore and then played it again all in one sitting and even now, a month later i'm STILL obsessed and i'm still trying to get into the nooks and crannies of the lore so when i saw this video i GASPED The bonus points FINALLY made a podcast about a game that i actually played!! i was so so happy my fav moment in the game is the entire cave johnson situation, where he starts off with astronauts and big people and then ends up with people he picked up from the streets and then my absolute most favorite line is: DON'T MAKE LEMONADE!! MAKE LIFE TAKE THE LEMONS BACK! GET MAD!! as someone who doesn't play that many games, portal stuck to me and it will forever amaze me no matter how many times i play through it again and again. One thing i regret is not finding out about it sooner because right now i cannot FOR THE LIFE OF ME find ANY companion cube anywhere on the internet to buy and i will forever be sad about that.
Istg portal and portal 2 are so good, I gotta replay them at some point I genuinely cant believe they arent on ps4, like its insane how old they are and so good portal might actually be timeless
Great podcast episode! Might be one of my favourite ones :). Definitely happy with the game's position on the list, although I am love the 2nd game I can understand why Oli prefers the first one haha
Hey guys! Portal 2 is one of my favorite games, so hearing you guys fawn over it for over an hour was a real treat 😊 I never thought about the game-player relationship allegory for the game, but it totally fits! I had always seen it more as a feminist narrative, with Wheatley and Cave being analogues as (if I remember correctly, it’s been a while) they’re both kinda stupid male or male-coded characters that run Aperture into the ground. I also remember the game implying that GLADoS’s AI is based on Cave’s assistant, who has none to very few voice lines in the Cave recordings (representing how she was historically overlooked by the company) but ends up being the best one to run Aperture. Idk if that’s a super common reading but that’s what I get from the story :)
Hi Joe, I have a question for you as a fellow fan of hollow knight. How do feel about the lack of communication from Team Cherry about Silksong? The game was revealed in 2019 and we’ve had virtually radio silence from the devs since late 2020 leading to some frustration among fans. Really interested to hear your thoughts!
They are in a lucky position to not need to spend any time/money marketing. I think they are doing the smart thing by staying quiet and focusing on developing the game.
This was a triumph! I’m making a note here huge success! Love this game so much I’m so glad you all covered it I was looking forward to this ep for a while! Also so happy SplitGate got a mention it’s really good!! (I wish they kept updating it but maybe one day)
I have never played Portal but i have always liked the idea of it and i wouldn't mind seeing a Portal 3 at some point. I also did enjoy the Bonus Boys playing Coop at one point.
I am shocked that Keith doesn't know that his favorite game ever has endless community content. Sure, like games on Steam, many of them are quite straightforward and of average quality - but! The community knows the gems. And the best of the best creators have made "full-game" mods like "Portal Stories: Mel" by Prism Studios, and "Portal Revolution" by Second Face Software. And "Portal Reloaded" by the single developer Jannis Brinkmann, is a more mechanics-focused mod campaign without story, but a very interesting third-portal mechanic. So a lot of your ideas are already out there, waiting to be played. It's a shame that so many people regard Portal 2 as one of the greatest games of all time, but so few people know of all the content in and around that favorite game.
I just think Oli needs to see more complicated puzzles with gels. Like in the mods. It's not the gels on their own that is entirely interesting about them being in Portal - they are fun and they add an aspect of momentum and movement to the game. But that's exactly what comes into play, when you combine them with the other elements, with the portals, with the funnels and with the light bridges, together with cubes and turrets. And then the fizzlers, they are probably the most complexity-increasing feature of the game, of course. If you consider an element in Portal, you cannot consider it on its own. You have to consider all the different possibilities that they add, if you combine them with all the other elements that are available in the game. And that's I think why they added them. Because they add so many more possibilities of what tests can be and what the actions of a player can be in the game. I think just considering gels on their own is the wrong way to look at them. You have to see the more complicated puzzles that use them, to understand what they did to the game's possibilities.
Stop posting so many videos for 5 freaking seconds so I can catch up, I’m almost a year and a half behind on videos and lives, I CANT WATCH THIS YET ahhhhhhhhhhhh

My first thought was: "How does it gel? With gels!"

1:30:30 was gold
11:16 Valve designed Portal 2 to run well and look good on weaker devices

I played through both games with a friend last year and it is amazing even if you don't play videogames you should play them for the experience.

Randomly recommended by the algorithm. Portal 2 and Stampy? Damn, that's something I didn't know I want
Edit: Never knew he liked it so much.
I have never played Portal but i have always liked the idea of it and i wouldn't mind seeing a Portal 3 at some point. I also did enjoy the Bonus Boys playing Coop at one point.

If only they replaced Steven Merchant with Kojima, Wheatley's performance might have boosted Oli's vote above Baldurs Gate.
Please make more bound points videos
