One of the purest examples of emotion in song. The clarity of heartbreak is so starkly laid bare in poetic lyrics of pain backed by a simple, haunting melody that feels like the repeating doubts and despair that run through one's head when you are laying there... alone... exhausted from crying of your loss.
His singing roughness/yelling in the later verses was done like that as that IS how you’ll hear it on the album version. As others have mentioned, NIN being an industrial person/band, and on that album especially, the music to this was heavily synthesizers and drum/cymbal/metal clashes, and similar odd noises into quite lovely music…. But yes, the singing in the later parts is the same style. It fits better with the music of the album version because it blends better than in this very stripped style, but you may still not be thrilled with it…. Hope you like it, but hey, who knows?
Holy schitt. This chick just said a pre- sobriety Trent Reznor live performance was weak?!?!?! What dark magick is this? She exhibits lucid consciousness despite being so obviously without a pulse.....
Agreed all these reaction TH-camrs usually choose closer… it’s a great song but the only reason they choose it is for the shock value. Has nothing to do with them seeing the raw emotion and talent reznor has is his music.
Trent Reznor is the only member of NIN I believe. I know the first album he did completely on his own, and then the next few he had guest performers record certain parts. He's had several different people play live with him.
Think I've read several times that it was about losing his grandma. But music is subjective, and it reminds me of losing someone you care for just the same. This performance hits hard only after you've become accustomed to the album version. I've seen it 100 times and I still cracked a tear.
I thought his grandmother passed sometime around the "Fragile" era? This song is from "Pretty Hate Machine - a full decade before "The Fragile". My timeline could be wrong... I'm certainly not an expert on NIN. I have always enjoyed this track, though.
This song appears on NIN’s first album Pretty Hate Machine and on another album named Still. This stripped down version is more like the version on Still. All of these songs were actually written for a movie but the studio wanted someone with experience doing soundtracks. This was around 2003 but he has since won and been nominated for multiple Academy Awards for his work on soundtracks with NIN’s other official member Atticus Ross. The Social Network, Gone Girl are two of the movies he scored music for. I happen to love the way he sings it because he is showing the pain he is feeling. I appreciate your honesty but find it odd that you still want to listen to more if you didn’t like his singing. Thanks for the reaction.
I’ll just say you are clearly entitled to your opinion. You don’t seem to understand the raw emotion and pain he is trying to convey in this song, it is NOT supposed to be pretty. It’s supposed to be curled up on the floor in the fetal position heartbreaking kinda raw pain. Honestly that’s what Nine Inch Nials is, almost every song is about raw emotions and Reznors amazing ability to convey that through his vocals and overall songwriting and make people feel the way he does. Personally I feel that’s is what music is, it’s supposed to make you feel something and Trent Reznors accomplishes this better than almost anyone else I have very heard.
now imagine being 24 listening to this and all the girls, family and friends thought you were crazy...I know it was a love song! thats my curse and my gift! I see what other don't
I don't really have a comment about the video/song. I just want to say I appreciate the fact you were honest in your opinion of it. That's why I subscribed. 👍
I went into some dark places and this song went with me. Good or bad I dont know. Bad I guess. But I love this song till the end. A journey I didnt want but had to take I guess.
If you want Freddy Mercury, NIN isn't your band. This is an incredibly emotional song for him, I've seen videos of him breaking down into tears singing this. You won't get a Michael Bublé here, you get raw emotion and soul-piercing melody. I'm not impressed with this reaction. Don't worry, you won't see me here again.
This is the best version of this song. I dont give a shit what anyone says. Alot of trents music live sounds better than the album verion. Most artists its the other way around.
The original song on ‘pretty hate machine’ as I remember it, didn’t use a real piano or acoustic guitar, just really eerie synths & as a result I think it suffered in translation. Definitely listen to the original studio version, it’s hauntingly beautiful; though some might argue, a little depressing 🤔
Not for me but I would not have listened to Nine inch nails, had it not been for your channel. love your honesty. Some reaction channels just sit there and love everything, you are keeping it real. Thank you.
I love the piano in this song and the poetic lyrics. I don’t really listen to nine inch nails so I don’t know much about them but agree 100% with you on this reaction. Time to dive in
Yah, not wrong to criticize his singing or voice. Pre-2005, Trent didn't really take a lot of voice lessons, but his later album, starting with With Teeth, his singing gets WAY stronger and you can hear the voice lessons and just over all health of his voice. His earlier works he relies a lot on that kind of distortion and angst in his voice. Like, Somewhat Damaged live in their Rockslide video is really strong evidence.
This is a good version of the song but I’d suggest hearing an actual live version with the entire band or the album version. There’s layers of sound missing in this version that adds more life to the vibe of the song.
I would high recommend listening to the album version on your own time, to compare. I LOVE Nine Inch Nails but their live stuff not so much. Also, this song is *really* slow and other songs likes Head Like A Hole, Terrible Lie, and Wish (among many many others) are much more fast paced. I consider the Pretty Hate Machine album to be absolutely perfect and in my top ten all time favorites.
have you seen disturbed's cover of simon and garfukels " the sound of silence"?-i'm not a fan of nin but i will admit that some of their songs aren't bad
He’s not a singer. He’s the only creative member of NIN. He’s a classical pianist and writer. Trent Reznor should be looked at differently. Time has and will tell.
This song without the gut churning Synth sounds, interesting, but.. I prefer it with the Synths, also the acoustic guitar line sounds much better on the Piano in the original. The slight vocal changes in the first verse and chorus grated on me slightly as I'm so used to the way I've heard it for so many years. The more intense vocals sit more comfortably with a backdrop of heavy Synth. Still interesting and Impressive though.
A request I would like to put forward is Aesthetic Perfection with any of the following songs. You might love this if you like Nine Inch Nails: Gods and Gold S E X/Gravity/Automaton Party Monster
I found that timing was a bit off in this version. Richard on the guitar was about a half a second behind with his playing. I get that with live versions things will be a bit off but considering at this time they all were heavy drinkers in the band I'm thinking maybe they had Hangovers but i dunno. I do agree this was a weaker performance compare to other live versions of this song I've heard.
Forgot to say, if you are keeping NIN in the reaction playlist, I would recommend Only or Gave up. Both are incredible performances and both have amazing videos.
I agree and this performance isn’t a good representation of NIN imo. The original, studio version from the Pretty Hate Machine album is miles better. Some other amazing NIN songs on a more mellow side would be: This Isn’t the Place, Right Where It Belongs, Echoplex, All Time Low. If you want something heavier from NIN, I would suggest: The Line Begins to Blur, Mr. Self-Destruct, Happiness in Slavery and No, You Don’t.
Rebeka again great reaction don't know this artist it's good but not my cup of tea it's kind of depressing sorry. But you make it more pleasant than it is lol. :-)
I'm a massive NIN fan but I'd never seen this particular performance before. Honestly this is probably the worst vocal performance I've ever seen from Trent, wow
Wow, Rebeka... I HATE to say it... but you're not so good at this kind of evaluations. Maybe you're just too young to understand these emotions. Not to knock you; just to clarify what we often see about the rites of passage, over the generations.
I love your reaction, but wished you had picked a better song. The lyrics make no melodic sense, the vocals place the strangest emphasis on horribly annunciated accents, the instrumentals are simplistic, like grade school recital simplistic. When you see comedic sketches of bad singers performing horrible hotel bar gigs, this is what they sound like. His style is great in the genre he is famous for, but ballads and acoustic renditions isn't it. His vocals can not carry a tune alone, and it is the vacuum of sounds that highlights his lack of quality. I can get over bad lyrics if there is music to draw attention to, but his playing chops would have been more challenging than the music he attempted on that piano and the acoustic guitar barely played a role in the song, let alone filled the void or provided backing harmonies, nor there for the rhythm purposes either. There are going to be fans of NIN who will love this song simply because its done by NIN...great for them...but I am not one of those. I like some NIN songs, and I appreciate what NIN brought to the table in the genre, but just as I wouldn't recognize a poor song from someone else, I can't give credit to this one either.
The lyrics are remarkable. The melody carried throughout is beyond your understanding clearly. I'm embarrassed for you and the dribble you just vomited all over the comments section here. Clearly neither of you have any idea about songwriting and performing.
@@geminisundone don't be embarrassed for me, as you have enough of your own issues to be attentive to, not to waste such on arguing something of opinion. Just how did your great scholar training teach you to win debates of opinion? Or, is your position that simply yours is the only position and all else is wrong because it is yours?
It was an amazing performance and the raspy tone he brought in brought the real pain he felt alive!A true artist.
NIN music is as vast and varied as the oceans... my all time favourite group

The track "and all that could have been" by nine inch nails is a track that I haven't seen anyone do a reaction video.
I was about to comment this same suggestion. Probably the saddest song I've ever heard and completely overlooked....
Agreed all these reaction TH-camrs usually choose closer… it’s a great song but the only reason they choose it is for the shock value. Has nothing to do with them seeing the raw emotion and talent reznor has is his music.
The raspy tone is the best part :)
Trent Reznor, the writer and key member of NIN is a god...such great music...a beautiful choice....
Trent Reznor is the only member of NIN I believe. I know the first album he did completely on his own, and then the next few he had guest performers record certain parts. He's had several different people play live with him.

Hey Rebeka please do a reaction to skid row 18 and life it's a brilliant song and you will definitely live it many 🙏

Trent is not known for having the best voice or a big vocal range. But I think the emotions came through from the framework of who he is.
