To those people who have no access to reed / cane materials ... visit a garden center or home improvement center and purchase bamboo stakes used for tomato gardening . A wire coat hanger will punch through the "sections" within bamboo and works faster if the coat hanger wire is red hot from a torch . Get the book - Whittling in the Wild and be glad you did .
Another option would be to take a hammer and flatten out one end of the coathanger slightly, then you can chuck it up in a hand drill, heat it up and bore through. Used to do this all the time making stems for corncob pipes.
Felix… thank you for the inspiration. I really enjoy your Swiss Army Knife lessons. After many, many years, I’ve started whittling again. Got a Victorinox Ranger and finding it to be capable. I’ve been practicing simple bushcraft skills and carving sculptures out of sticks chewed upon by beaver that I’ve found riverside. It feels healing to work with wood. Thanks from Oregon, for all you share.
Just bought your book! I’m so excited about it. I gave my youngest son his first SAK this Christmas and we will truly enjoy making the projects in the book. We love your videos. Thank you!
Nice idea. Theoretically if you take off material from the reed you can tune it. The more material there is the more power you need to move it and the higher the pitch becomes. And on a sidenote the reed can also be moved inside the pipe. Or you can make a reedless flute. But I‘m not entirely sure how the latter ones work.
@@FelixImmler Hate to bother again..i have a idea for a mod..making a survival adze or spoon carver out by modifying the swiss army pocket clip.you would have to take it off to use if course but would have it on board.what do you think?

I think, of you could curve the reed down, instead of up, you could blow into it through the end, like a normal flute. No? But this way does keep it simpler, which is best for us who are just trying it out. Very fun, as always. Can't wait till spring to surprise the kids with this.
For any oldies who remember the “Just William” books; I've just read a story about William being shown how to make a reed whistle (same as this flute but no finger holes) by an old man who enjoys whittling.

Smile, mir is was verrücktes eingefallen. Was man auch mit einem SAK bauen könnte, was bei dir nicht so treffend wäre.
