Guys! Before you tune your guitar, if you're afraid of breaking your strings you can tune you guitar down to CGDGDD and then Capo on 2nd. All good and no risk of breaking a string :D
Never tried this, but I imagine the b string is still almost just as likely to break tuning it to D. To play the song I think you really need to suck it up and swap the b string out to an old high e. There is no other way...
All the time spent to explain this song for free is really outstanding. The production is awesome. I like the commentary about the background of the song and band too. It's obvious these guys love music.
Instead of tuning up, I actually tuned down my 5th and 2nd strings tuning to D, G, D, G, A, E, and then put a Cut Capo on the 2nd fret. That gives you the following tuning: D, A, E, A, A, E. The second string is supposed to be an E but it sounds nearly identical. Plus, my strings aren't going to snap.
I play in this tuning (which I have been doing since I don't want to fuck up my strings): D-A-E-A-A-E D (One step down) A (same as standard) E (One step up) A (One step up) A (One step down) E (same as standard) It still fits the chord. Great lesson, very useful.
It's like one string open chords except for the last couple chord shapes. Looks pretty easy just by watching it and i haven't even tried playing it yet. That's what alternate tunings or even a capo + alternate tunings can do. Make simple songs to play sound pretty good.
Literally the worst tuning section of any instructional video I have ever seen. This guy doesn't deserve the views and subs he has. He's a horrible teacher.
I just got back from the goo goo dolls concert and this is my cousins favorite song, so I promised her I'd learn it and it took me under 2 ish hours to learn, but it's a little off, all I need is a little practice, thank you for this awesome tutorial
Thank you very much for providing such an accurate way to play "Name", exactly the same as the original song. I searched for the accurate guitar score of this song for more than ten years, and finally found it on TH-cam today. I am very touched. Thank you for your patient guitar teaching! I like this song very much. Wish your fans will exceed 1 million next year, come on!
Agreed and one of my favorite things is he plays it and then analyzes. I can’t stand tutorials. where out the gate they’re running their mouth about whatever instead of just going straight to the lesson.
Great job. One of my favorites. I had it in a GUITAR WORLD or GUITAR PLAYER mag and learned it, then stopped playing it for some reason. Now I forget the tuning and how to play it. Thanks for sharing!
That is an excellent guitar lesson, slow enough and really detailed and a simple presentation. It also helps that you sound kind and your guitar looks awesome.
Hi Jam Play,,i:ve watch all GOO GOO Dolls ( Name) guitar lesson...and you are the only one tune and played real close to original song...very smooth.watching you,,,I see myself...GOOD JOB..
You are Amazing! Great instruction! I want to learn how to play my guitar. I don't know all the terminology yet so I will research it so I can learn from your tutorials. I love the Goo Goo Dolls and would love to play one of their songs. 🎼
Hey DJ I've only been playing for a month, and I've seen a lot of good, bad, and mediocre guitar teachers on you tube so far. But you are hand down one of the best. This was an AMAZING lesson. Great pace of teaching, amazing camera angels and I loved the history of the band/song. Even with limited experience I can already play a lot of this song, and it is great practice for using the the fingers that a lot of beginners (like me) try to avoid. I'll definitely be back to check you're lessons out in the future. Thanks man.
Good lesson, bro. I know your tuning is correct. That's how Rzeznik tunes it. Far be it from me to criticize his genius. He certainly came out with some cool stuff. But I really think it's better to tune the B string one step down to A. For one, you won't pop ur strings, which is always a major plus. And two, it makes picking out those arpeggios-like phrases even easier for me. Not that it's very difficult either way. But if you're doubling the E string to shoot for this "droning, feeling out the sound thing" you still get that effect with your 2nd and 3rd strings both being A notes instead of the 2nd and 1st string being E's. So I'm going with: D, A, E, A,, A, E. And I won't have to worry about popping any strings if I'm playing someone else's guitar.
I know it's an easy tune to play........ But it doesn't have to be difficult to sound pretty. I couldn't ask for a better lesson. Full cover than an explanation. Not to mention the player's POV video. Really nice job dude.
I love the way you just removed your fret hand when you didn’t need it so the attention would be drawn to the rhythm. Very well done 👍 sounds great 👍 thanks 🙏
I strung one of my guitars with two 9 gauge E strings on the first and second and tuned to DAEAEE like he said and OMG it sounds cool. And BTW y'all, I've had it strung and tuned like this for over a month with zero popped strings. (knock on wood) This is currently my favorite thing to play on the guitar. Thanks for the tutorial DJ.
Yes it sounds way better I think its perfect I just tuned it from a a to ee after breaking the b to a new e it is so easy to tune and thanks for the lesson . Made my junk acoustic sound new .
Tried this crazy tuning on my cheap 10 year old Squier Strat with original strings it came with [besides the low E string that was replaced once] and the strings surprisingly didn't break like what?! Then tried it on my friend's nice and expensive Taylor acoustic guitar with original old strings and always kept in standard tuning. G-string snapped after like half a turn. Mind blown
You are a good guitar player , musician. As far as teaching..... you’re assuming the people know as much as you in this video. Many other tutorials dumb down the cords and are super easy to follow. I’m sure this is great if you have been playing for a while.
I'm chiming in after all of these years because this is freaking amazing! DUDE. I have been trying to figure out this song for eons... It was never right. It was the tuning. and probably my Taylor. LOL Peace.
Don’t tune it to # just tune to b ...like Db, Ab, Eb, Ab, Eb, Eb....and then add a capo on The first fret...and you’ll get the exact sound of this open d tuning...I’ve done this ...and trust me sounds way obvious...😄😊
Great tutorial, thank you for doing. I am a huge GGD fan. Do you cover the solo on another video? You say you are about to cover the solo, then the video is over. Thank you!
Thanks very much, best lesson I've seen on the web!!! Perfect teaching method, great close views. The only thing I did different was tune the B string down to an A
This is a ridiculously informative video. It's also the first I've ever really seen to play the original solo part (some come close but stay down below the twelfth fret - you didn't - NICE). Very cool. I'll be reviewing this for months. Thanks!
For the slide part at 16:43 there is a much easier way to play it on the 4th string. 5,7,9,12 then when you're doing the hamer on&off just do it on the same string , you can even do the hammer on hameroff if you hammer on the ninth string, off on the 7th and slide up to the 5th Fret ,its easier done than texted lol . For me it just makes the song fun to play I can play it both ways and it just sounds better to me the way I explained even though technically I'm not playing it right I'm having more fun and that's all that really matters to me
hey where"s the rest of it the solo, I got to join jamplay, any way i c0udint find part 2, anyone got a link somewhere''or just vidami the performance.
Guys! Before you tune your guitar, if you're afraid of breaking your strings you can tune you guitar down to CGDGDD and then Capo on 2nd. All good and no risk of breaking a string :D
Hey thanks man
Tyjij1 No problem mate (Y)
i can use this tuning then follow this video tutorial?
ukyo mian Yeah. Without a capo it'll just sound a little lower but it's exactly the same
Never tried this, but I imagine the b string is still almost just as likely to break tuning it to D. To play the song I think you really need to suck it up and swap the b string out to an old high e. There is no other way...
Goo-Goo Dolls owe me £600 for all the d-strings I’ve broken since the 90s playing this f***ing song 🥸
True lol!
You mean B?
i just broke mine 2 days ago
😂😂
@DEEJMASTER 333 it's a lot less likely
Played this fully in 15 minutes and impressed my entire family. This breakdown is Perfect!
All the time spent to explain this song for free is really outstanding. The production is awesome. I like the commentary about the background of the song and band too. It's obvious these guys love music.

Might have to give this a crack. Dunno how to replace my strings and I don’t want to run that risk on my year old strings 😂😂
Don’t need to cut your capo just put it on backwards
I play in this tuning (which I have been doing since I don't want to fuck up my strings):
D-A-E-A-A-E
D (One step down)
A (same as standard)
E (One step up)
A (One step up)
A (One step down)
E (same as standard)
It still fits the chord.
Great lesson, very useful.
And the guitar , thankss
Thanks..
i play on D - A - D - E - A - E and i heard it same :D
Thank you😊
most of the tabs recommend DADAAE, never seen that one Ivan. Whatever floats your boat I guess...
Luckily I've played guitar for 25 years. I watched this video once all the way through and it's like I've always known how to play it now. Thanks man.
It's like one string open chords except for the last couple chord shapes. Looks pretty easy just by watching it and i haven't even tried playing it yet. That's what alternate tunings or even a capo + alternate tunings can do. Make simple songs to play sound pretty good.

That Taylor sounds outstanding. Nice job.
This is such a perfectly instructed tutorial, and the video editing and multiple angles of the guitar are superb. Excellent work!

thanks man, strings held on fender acoustic. I really love this song, glad I have 2 acoustics leaving the fender in this tune just for name
Lol gotta love the freedom of trash talk people ruin awesome things with....great job on the video my man
This is the tuning I have always used and I tune it down a half step and use a capo on the first fret. It sounds amazing. This is an awesome tutorial.
dude. THANK YOU that's a fantastic idea.
Yes CGDGDD capo 2
CGDGDD capo 2
Great lesson. Very thorough and I enjoyed the extras, since I love this band. As everyone else, I wish that the solo lesson was accessible.
Hi have you ever found it?
Awsum brother playing it first then the tutorial is exactly wat needs to happen so we get a full picture of how it's played
one of the best songs ive ever heard !!
Great job. One of my favorites. I had it in a GUITAR WORLD or GUITAR PLAYER mag and learned it, then stopped playing it for some reason. Now I forget the tuning and how to play it. Thanks for sharing!
Now I can play name perfectly thanks to this man
Thanks. I really love guitar. 👍

They were always huge among the Buffalo music scene. One of the best bands of the 90's. BTW, MAD skills DJ. Keep rockin' baby!!

I broke an e string tunning it in standard but tunning it the way you did it but tunning it the first time was successful
I know it's an easy tune to play........ But it doesn't have to be difficult to sound pretty. I couldn't ask for a better lesson. Full cover than an explanation. Not to mention the player's POV video. Really nice job dude.
DAEAEE?! That’s wild
great video! no chance you have a lesson for the solo? preferably the newer 1?
Good job and nice lesson from you DJ! Thank you very much! Now I can play the song way better than before! More power to your work!

Hello DJ - thank you for your wonderful lesson! I wanted to ask you what model Taylor that is? A c414 perhaps?
You are a great singer man! I loved your style of teaching
Great lesson thanks man! Johnny rzeznik made a really cool tuning with this one, definitely gunna mess around with it for weeks

Great job DJ. This is my favorite Goo Goo Dolls song. Would you have the solo guitar tabs available to share? Thanks
I love this song going to learn it
try bringing the b string down to E instead of up you get more jingle jangle
Using another e String is very much worth it. Love the airy sound
Cool the way it's filmed so you can see what his hands are doing. Sounds correct.
Playing the hell outta that high E lol. Great job though, trying to learn this one now. Great video

wow... great playing..
How about tuning the B string down to A instead of up 2 E? Does this screw up the chord fingerings. Probably easier on the O'l B string tho.
