i remember hearing that back in the late 90s that when city of angels came out, johnny saw a screening of the film and was so moved and inspired by it that he went back to his hotel room and wrote this song in one night....
It's amazing how music can transport us through space and time....I hear this song and all of a sudden it's year 2000 again and I'm in a Datsun pickup with Brian in Hawaii. I can't believe that was 2 decades ago.

As someone who writes and plays music, I'd say that I love and feel the music enough that it's still enjoyable to play a song that I've played 1000 times before. Interesting story: his guitar is missing one string (high E) because at the time of writing this song he had a broken guitar which was missing strings. He did not want to go outside to replace them. While composing the song I imagine it would have felt and sounded similar to this performance.

But that along with the condition of his voice should be enough reason for him not to go all out on this acoustic session.
