The winter beater champ competition is - between the Newport and the R5 - a toss up in my mind. When at idle, the Newport sounds almost like my '39 Merc flathead V8. On the other hand, who would ever believe that (in Canada) the R5 would be anything but a pile of iron oxide in the year 2021? Back in the sixties my dad (a GM guy) tried to interest my brother and I in bringing a Dauphine back to life from a dealer's back forty (as a summer project). One look at the rust on the Renault and we turned to the '62 Wolseley sitting next to it in the field. Rebuilt the distributor and did a bit of bodywork & paint. The 6 cylinder in it was sweet; along with the leather upholstery, walnut dash & Smiths instruments... but, the 2 speed Auto, not so much! Keep up the great work you guys! I'll be sending a contribution to the Classic Darts collection soon - courtesy of some mementos of my dad. Cheers!
You are going to need some legit scoring on this year's winter beats... Cost, uniqueness, fun factor, usability, etc. Or just line them all up with the doors open and the one Frankers jumps in to go for a ride is the winner.
If Frankers is going to judge the contest insist on NO dogggie treats be within 50 feet of any vehicle. We can not have any election that even appears to be slightly shady......hum hum USA.....lol
I just hope that Agent 6667 will give the Newport an undercarriage treatment or rustproof it. I know fullsizers are good in the winter but salt and winter crud was the reason my 66 Electra was rusted beyond repair. And also my dad didn't gave it the treatment when he drove it for 8 years in the 90's. Because of that, my daily driver/winter beater Volvo 940 wagon is having the treatment every 2 years. Thanks again for the contents. Always a pleasure to watch. Cheers PS. It's hard to believe the Newport is a half century old. She sounds great

Myles MoparfreaK and that is what most people who buy new cars don't understand! An old car that you have put yourself into just means so much more than just transportation! I remember many family trips in that car because it could haul all 6 of my family we took it instead of my parents Monte Carlo. It was government Green and was ordered extra non options in the thing. Not even a Radio. Nothing. The government once tried to at least look as if they cared about frivolous spending of tax payers money. LOL. We put in an under dash 8-Track player so we could play our Boston and Carpenters music. Okay there was Anne Murray too. We were after all pure hockey lovin Canadians! That was in about 1976. He drove the 318 for years and sold it still going strong. Please remember that Le Cars were amazingly powerful for a Cinq, 1.3 liters instead of about 1 liter.

Forgot to add one more thing. Tell Niles to check to see of the 727 TF has a vacuum modulator. The lack of "cam vacuum" may be causing his shifting issues. I would do that before he starts adjusting any of the bands.
I's have to say that the Fiat 128 was also very influential in changing mainstream auto building. Not a 3 door but launched in 1969 vs. 1971 for the R5. Both were big sellers in Europe. Loved the '71 Newport but I'd have to have some sort of muffler. Thanks for another episode!

Congratulations to Scott and Agent 6667 for getting their cars done while it was still winter. Both cars look cool! It would be hard to pick a winner, but since Renault 5's were such crappy cars to begin with, I have to give the win to Scott. Scott should take care of the 5 because I suspect they will become rare in the future, because they were not built to last like a Chrysler. The Wagoneer is cool too, not sure if that was part of the competition, but that is a rare vehicle too and should be restored.
I admire the amount of time, and effort that breathed new life into a neglected car. It's such a cool ride! I'd love to cruze in that car!
Thanks Neal! Man she just floats down the highway, and with the 3.23s, has lots of power!
@@mylesmoparfreak6562 as an Aussie, I've never seen one of these babies in the flesh. You've done incredible work, it's a credit to you. I loved Scott's perfect "Brrrp-da brrrp-da brrrp-da" take on that sweet idle!
@@MattsScaleModels thank Matt! I'm sometimes surprised that it's done and on the road myself. It has become my errand car. I can't help but sink that pedal to the floor when I get on the highway. Sounds soo good!
I think the Le Newport is leading the Winter Beater Challenge.
Thanks Mark!
Lots of smiles Miles 😁
lol, happy you have enjoyed the ol Port, thanks Mike!
I agree.
Points but Frankers choosing from the top 2
If Frankers is going to judge the contest insist on NO dogggie treats be within 50 feet of any vehicle. We can not have any election that even appears to be slightly shady......hum hum USA.....lol
Frankers knows best
🚬🐕
Myles’ Newport is great and the R5 is so well restored but in all honesty I think Jim’s Jeep is best in the snow so that’s where my vote goes.
That Newport is the epitome of cool. It's like a next generation Christine...
Cheers
PS. It's hard to believe the Newport is a half century old. She sounds great
Miles, I’m not even driving the Newport and I have a smile on my face. Absolute fantastic job, congratulations.
Thanks Robert! you are too kind! I'm happy shes "done" for now
Well agent 6667 just won the winter beater challenge! So awesome to see that Newport get saved from the demo derby or scrapper!
Hey thanks Carter Auto restyling! I hate the demo derby killers too, and love an old c-body!
Great work Myles! Old Mopars don't usually have much broken after sitting for years but EVERYTHING needs some kind of attention.

That Newport is an absolute (lock the doors and put out the lights) beast!
Very kind Pedro! just wait till ya hear the duals!
All joking aside ,it's probably a fairly rare car. Oh and the HUSLTER floor mats. Real class.
You should do a snow drag race to determine the winner of the winter beats contest. Patch the quarter panels and dog legs would make this into a year round daily driver, maybe to nice for salt.
Thanks Rich! Its def headed that way. Quarters one day soon
Myles is a Boss! But the car is begging for Cherry Bomb glasspacks.
yea, it really needs to keep some of that rumble
Ya get that bad girl rolling to about 40 put it in 2nd shut off the ignition take your foot off the gas when you hit about 15mph turn ignition switch on you'll need to practice it should bark pretty good
You can pump the pedal if you want .get the exhaust saturated
Then give it some spark
Don't do this with stock mufflers

Not only does the Newport win Winter Beater, but she gets her own category: Winter Beast! I smiled every time she accelerated - a Tesla owner will never know that joy. When you've got to deflate tires to get the wheels mounted on the rear axle, you know you're on to something special - & that rake! Economy cars beware! This may be premature, but congratulations Myles!

Myles MoparfreaK and that is what most people who buy new cars don't understand! An old car that you have put yourself into just means so much more than just transportation! I have an emotional attachment to a 72 Impala that was willed to me by my uncle, it was his/my moms parents car. I remember many family trips in that car because it could haul all 6 of my family we took it instead of my parents Monte Carlo. Every time I get it out it is like stepping back in time and that is especially good right now with all the problems going on in the States of America, notice I left out United!
Jake and Elwood Blues would drool over that big Newport! It looks like an old undercover police car! Sounds mean and nice and lopey at idle. Love it!!

Frankers looks absolutely hysterical riding with the boys 😆
That 383 in the Newport sounds so good without a muffler!
Yeah, if we could just make it idle a leeetle bit slower...I know it's about to die as it is...and that's far lower than factory spec, for a '71.

Robert Hardwick, that would be fun to watch. Now would be good too.
Really enjoyed the video work and work in general that Agent 6667 did! His ride is awesome and brings back memories of my dads 1971 Fury 2 he bought from the Canadian, Alberta, Government, where he worked for years at a base in a town called Beaverlodge. Dear Kurt MC
These two oldtimer cars are extremely different (and not only because of the sound). Nevertheless: For me it's definitely more a kind of a remis respectively draw. Both great guys put a lot of work into their winter beater and they will not stop until the cars are completely finished (at least I hope so). ;-)
Best regards, luck and health.

@@Chr.U.Cas1622 yes I have to agree with you. Scott kind of steered us toward giving Miles some extra credit, so I guess that’s what I was doing. So ur right Scott put just as much if not more work in the Reno as miles did!!!
Dear @@mylesmoparfreak6562
Thanks for replying. I really hope that you will repair/close the rusted out rear side ends some day (so that no salt and humidity can come in.
1a) I also hope that there will not be too much muffler on the Newport (destroying the fantastic sound). Maybe some simple straight pipes will be enough!?
2) Sport Fury? What Sport Fury? Maybe the car that could already be seen in your workshop?
3) I just finished watching some older CWM vids and realized that this great black pickup truck (driveway dent repaired by great Scott) is yours too. Congrats, very well done, very impressive result.
Best regards, luck and health.
It will be tough to choose a winner in this year's winter beater challenge, all the entries are such radically different examples of what winter beats can be.
If Scott can make that little LeCar plow thru the deep snow I think he wins! But the Wagoneer is my fav. ride though!
"Two and one half months of my life and I have a driver" . Those words by Miles ring so close to home. The end of the episode was just one huge grin. Thank you.
Thanks Xombi! Short pain for huge gain! and now it's play time!
Hope you're projects coming along as well
If agent 6667 doesn't win WBC, he should at least take the chop trophy title, the Newport sure sounds rowdy. Great work Myles! Scott should get the Minter Beater Challenge title ✌

Well, i always want more gear, but then hate the highway. As Scott lives 30 mins away, the 3.23s were a decent compromise. Thanks Glenn!
Myle’s Newport takes a commanding lead!
Thanks Charles! My newest fun ride!
What great production values! At 34:05, the transition to the winter beaters opens in the shape of a Mopar pentastar, to reveal Myles' awesome Newport.
Except for its massive thirst, I still think Jim's Grand Wagoneer wins. The other two beaters will get you most places, the Wagoneer will get you anywhere and everywhere!
That said, the Renault is fwd (surprisingly good in snow), small and nimble while Myles' Newport epitomizes the term "Winter Beater".
Please remember that Le Cars were amazingly powerful for a Cinq, 1.3 liters instead of about 1 liter.
Canadian LeCars all came with the 'big' 1400cc motor compared to 800cc in Europe. They had good performance for their size and a ball to drive.
@@mrdanforth3744 I had a Renault Alliance (R9) with the 1.4. The 'family' version, altho' the R9 has a transverse engine. Awesome car for its strengths. Speed wasn't one of the strengths.
@@boggy7665 When I worked in a garage in the 80s we had a customer who used an Alliance to commute 160 miles a day. He ran up over 200,000 miles without a breakdown or major repair. Mind you he serviced it by the book which means it was in every few weeks for an oil change, or some kind of service but it never let him down.
@@mrdanforth3744 Dang, you're right! It was a 1.4 liter engine in North America. Memory failed me.
Forgot to add one more thing. Tell Niles to check to see of the 727 TF has a vacuum modulator. The lack of "cam vacuum" may be causing his shifting issues. I would do that before he starts adjusting any of the bands.
Clark Richter
No modulator on a 727. The kickdown linkage determines the shit points and shift quality.
Newport sounds like a very healthy 383 !
Glad to see the Renault passed inspection. Here in Texas the only thing that has to pass is the check you give for the fee.
The Winter Beater Challenge @48:01, So far The 1971 Chrysler Newport has my vote.
"Take it to your Renault dealer for service"... And no dealer? "Take it to the junkyard! Audience cheers." Audience splits a gut!!!
I can't pick a winner for the WB challenge because you both did an amazing job guys with the R5 and the Newport too! So nice to see them back in business! Congrats!
Dean the mover and shaker and Agent 6667 reaching rockstar status.
Hahahaha, Thanks Glen! I dont know about that, but maybe a touch cooler. Glad you liked it!
I won the winter beater contest with a Dodge Magnum wagon with a hemi engine. I had to buy 4 tires and buff out the headlight lenses. Its got glasspacks and a performance chip in the computer. A muscle car disguised as a station wagon.
