Ok the water flow on these filters goes down through the blue ring sponge and up through the middle therefore the first contact should be only sponge to remove sludge and particulates before it hits the bio media like alfagrog or white pumice stone this will ensure the media has clean water and the bacteria will be able to do a full job this should be for all filters the first this the water hits is all sponges then bio media and onto chemical like carbon if required
Greetings from Singapore. I broke the handle of my Ecco 300 back in December last year and switched to Professionel 3 600 for my 90x45x45 tank. But I still love the Ecco 300 after using it for the past six years and just never felt comfortable when I am servicing the Pro 3 600 although it is obviously more powerful than Ecco 300. Took out the Ecco 300 two hours ago after noticing that the outflow rate of the Pro 3 600 weakening over the weekend and got Ecco 300 back to work....Just that it was quite hard to close up the Ecco cos I forgot to apply the Eheim vaseline gel on the O ring. I will have to thank you cos you gave me the idea of putting the mini balls in the hole on top of the cover. My set up for the Ecco Pro is slightly different.....The inlet is fitted with a external prefilter to prevent the filter from clogging and reducing the outflow. The outlet is fitted with an air diffuser to provide aeration. For the filter media,I put Seachem Matrix at the bottom tray,Eheim Biomech in the middle tray and lastly a pack of Seachem Purigen with Substrat Pro at the top tray.

I have an eheim 2262 for 30 years. Nothing ever broke but I did lose a bushing while cleaning 2 months ago and was still able to buy a replacement for $6
Nice to see that this channel is back . I have used Eheim canister filters for years including an Ecco . Very happy with them , however , the latest versions seem to suffer from poor quality control for which they have been heavily criticised in many reviews ..For that reason when I upgraded my largest ( Eheim Pro 3 600 ) I chose to buy an Aquael Ultramax 2000 instead . I set my canisters up ; mechanical followed by biological filtration ( Biohome Ultimate) . I try to get the water as clean as possible before it encounters the Biological media and don't bother with Chemical filtration . Eheim also make little in tank pre filters which I find to be excellent .
theboesmani Eheim used to be the canister filters others were judge from. But not anymore, they’ve all come a long way since their inception. My next video is going to be on ADA canister filters you won’t want to miss that one.
This was very useful, I am about to set up my very first canister filter and the step by step with the priming was great. I use filter floss in my sump and I agree it's the best thing I have found to take out particulate in the aquarium. I am looking forward to seeing you convert a canister to anoxic.
Made an easy to clean filter on top of my 60g tank, power head w/tube into a plastic bottle, holes on the bottom flows into an old file box with 4 tubes coming out into the tank easy peasy. 2 different powerheads- 2 bottles.Used a hose connector under the cap to secure the hose.media -lava rock and quilt batting-running for 3yrs. =happy goldfish -bare bottom tank.Used some tiny trees to build a shelf behind tank to carry most of the weight.
I hadn’t cleaned my Eheims in 3 years (I clean the prefilter religiously) when I decided to clean them today. I use one for mechanical and one for bio filled bio balls. I can’t remember whether they filter going down or going up. Needed your video for an answer - filters on the way up!
Nice informative video. I like your passion in explaining things in simple layman terms. I will agree with you that the white(polyester?) filter material is great for polishing the water. I've been using them in all my filters since the early 70s. They get clogged up pretty fast when my aquarium gets stirred up during some chores. You were dead on when you put canister filters as mainly mechnical filters. For mechnical filters to be efficient, the "white" material needs to be clean often. I cleaned mine every 48hrs.(i remember your filter socks video) I do not touch the rest.(only clean them after or 60days or so). It became a bit tiring that I make my own canister filter. Pop out the prefilter, and pop in another prefilter, in a matter of seconds. I take my time to clean the dirty one later and ready for the next pop in. In priming a canister, I noted that you sort of prefilled water into the pump impeller. Maybe those who are having issues with priming may have check to see if the impeller is sitting higher than the canister waterline, or the main seal is leaking. Looking foreward to the next video.
I knew somebody like you would enjoy that video. My next video will be about the ADA stainless steel canister filter. I’ll let you know if I even think it’s worth the money.
@@anoxicfiltrationplenums Yes!! my bet is it is not worth it. It is too bad the AD(Aqua Documenta; Horst/Kipper) who brought CO2 comercially to aquarists did not reap the full sucess and continued.Their heated cables in substrate failed summer.
Sunny Tan you’re absolutely right the heating cables were great in the winter time but in the summertime they did not work. In fact I even had some and they failed completely and burned up.
I've been using eheim filters since the 1970's & I use bio-home ultimate media in my eheim 2229,2227 & check the filters every 4-months ! also 2-4 times a year I use my vortex diatom filter to polish the tank. I believe to keep it simple it's an expensive hobby ! 👍🐠🐠
What are you talking about the canister filter gets filled with aquarium water. It's taken over to the tank empty and then through siphoning starts and refills itself.
Hi Dr. Novak, for the people doesnt have anoxic filtration in their tank, how long before the bacteria dies in a canister or sponge filter when u take them out of the water?Saw that u kept the canister out of water and dried up but I know your not woried about the bacteria since u got the anoxic filtration going on.I always wondered if the bacteria dies off soon after the filters are out of water to know how long to keep them out of the water while cleaning them.
This is a very good question and I think I’ll do a video on the answer to it. Most people show that you should clean your filter material in tank water. But that would be like cleaning your clothes in dirty water and expecting them to come out clean. Your question really gets into microbiology and what we’ve been told on how to clean filters. But is it really the right way? I myself clean my filters very good just like you would clean your clothes before you would put them back on your body. I do not depend on my filters as biological only mechanical. If you are depending on your filters as biological then it’s best off to clean one filters at a different time. That way every 60 -90 days you would clean one filter and the other would remain biologically sane. Let’s say you clean all your filtering material in a bucket of water from the fish tank. Would you then fill up your canister filter with straight fish tank water? Or would you fill it up with nice clean tapwater that has chloramine in it that kills bacteria? That’s why anyBCB basket you may rinse the outside of it but the inside really doesn’t become affected by the tapwater. Bacteria as long as it stays wet and moist it will live for quite a long time.
@@anoxicfiltrationplenums yes people clean their canister media, sponge and floss with tank water and also fill it up with tank water not to kill their beneficial bacteria. And most people run only one canister at a time for their biological and mechanical filtration. So they cant do what you do for yours cause likenyou said you dont depend on ur canister as biological filter. For instance I ran air for all my tanks in my diy box filters that has lava rock and floss in it and i clean the floss every twoo weeks and then put it back. Those are my mechanical and biological filters. So I need some consultation how i can achieve anoxic filtration in my tanks and tubs without sump amd without under gravel filter.Maybe I can email you and you can help me there?
@@fisherman484 i’m going to make a video on just the question you ask. And I will show how to take a canister filter and literally put a BCB inside of it so it can work its magic on anybody’s fish tank. The good thing about the BCB is it won’t have to be taken apart or dismantled or clean for over 30 years. Stay tuned to my TH-cam channel.
The ADA super jets are awesome. Hope you got the new v2 pump because it’s way quieter and pretty much silent. I agree that most product for canisters are worthless expensive junk or an overpriced basic material. However you should really try Seachem matrix. That’s 90 percent of my filter. It doesn’t get clogged or need replaced. It also has the most porous structure proven under microscopic images. It can house aerobic and anerobic. The problem with relying on the polish pad for bacteria is you really should swap those out every month or your flow will decrease. I just use it to polish. Also Seachem purigen is awesome and not a gimmick. It makes the most crystal clear water and you can regenerate it so it’s not wasteful.
Siporax® Filter Media was one of those mediums that made a big hit at first, until its microporous structure clog and all you had left was the OD [outer diameter] of the media and its ID. They made these unbelievable claims that a shoebox of the stuff could sufficiently filter or create enough biological filter for a Koi pond. But this was all found out to be untrue. I even did a video on such materials and it was demonetize because someone over in the united kingdom complained about it. When I asked him to bring up proof of the sintered material that they were selling was as good as he claimed: He made the comment that he doesn’t have to prove anything. So other words, just take their word for it and buy it.
The ADA super jet pump that you’re talking about only pumps out 3.5 L a minute and it’s very slow. which also could be replaced by a small Eheim pump that is just as quiet.
Kevin Novak Ph.D. - I apologize, I didn’t realize they didn’t carry the v2 pump through their full line up. They also offer it at 6 l/min which works ok for my 60p planted, but I’m guessing you went for even more flow than that. I agree that’s a ridiculous claim! Got a good chuckle. Do these manufacturers think we are stupid, even for a laymen that seems obviously doubtful. Bio media with high porosity does not belong in a pond. It’s too harsh an ecosystem that would easily clog and destroy all permeability. 99% of products available are designed by manufactures for making money, not by scientists to produce results. However, I find that in a planted aquarium 90 L or less a proper media like the Matrix can be implemented in a canister properly to support your bacteria. If you filter with a good course and fine sponge first to trap clogging particles you can maintain the ID permeability allowing proper molecular digestion and cycling. Also, by having a sufficient volume and proper rinsing often enough, I have been able to avoid the over producing of polymeric adhesive and browning which is also commonly clogging media pores. You just can not be lazy with maintenance, like you said! Matrix seems to actually work because the micro porous ID can populate anaerobic offering proper permeability that won’t cause clogging polymeric adhesive; unlike almost all other biomedia with a porosity that is to large or thin so it’s permeability causes it to get clogged just leaving the OD for aerobic. I top that off with a polishing floss and Purigen, which is a really cool absorber of organic matter. Of course if you don’t have a fully planted aquascape with nicely balanced livestock and instead a fish tank with heavy stock this will be more challenging. I use a plenum inside my shrimp tanks with amazing success! They are hard to implement in tank with an aquascape because of the obstruction which is why I can not wait to see how you make it in the super jet! That will be really cool! For the canister setup shown in this video, is it just serving as a polishing pre-filter? If you set one up like this you would also need a plenum in the tank for bacteria, right?
M.Indra Soyat - They don’t have to be! After I spent so much on my first one I found Beijing Uuidear Technology on Ali. I got a 15 L that’s identical to the superjet and even a little nicer imo for 48.05 and 118.88 shipping. You have to order the pump separately but I just use a 1056gph jebao in line adjustable pump that is 65. Still for about 230 with a stronger adjustable flow is super affordable; especially when compared to the smaller 12 L super jet that cost 1000.
Eheim are one of the best filters you'll get there reliable and near silent n just seem to go forever IV had two eheim classics they been running over 5year nones still running the other I sold once I forgot to put the locking tabs bk on and turned it on it was running as normal and no water leaked out i was shocked once I noticed that people find them hard to prime but I just turn the intake taps open the output n the filter auto fills I also know u canfillwithwateralsobut I don't do it that way the only draw back is the low flow in the 2213 and 2215 the 2217 is better IV also heard that there made in China now yes they'll be making the there to cut costs in making them but there still as good as they always been the pro4 trays are cheaply made n can be a pain but I love the classics has To be one of the best to fit in a huge bcb keep up the good work in sorry if am ranting lol
The old classic Eheim's are good filters the only thing I find wrong with them through the years is they need a lot better pump or should I stay a stronger pump they need to putout more gallons per hour. They've always been very low in water output.
Those ceramic rings differ in quality vastly one brand to the next even though they all look the same. Due to poor manufacturing, many of them are not porous and don't house bacteria well. Biohome ultimate is an excellent bio media, only problem is that it's expensive. Dr. Novak, I just got delivery of everything I need to make the BCB filters for my sump. Just waiting on the mesh plastic sheets which should be here on Monday. I'm looking forward to getting them into my 40 gallon sump.
Gurvinder Parmar once you make up the PCBs for your sump you’ll be very happy and you’ll be able to do away with all the expensive filtering material for biological purposes.
@@anoxicfiltrationplenums That is my hope...I'm so glad I came across your channel. I've had my big 240 gallon tank up and running water the a 40 gallon sump for almost 4 years now...I've been doing big 50% water changes almost on a weekly schedule...I'm hoping I can cut that back to once a month (if possible). I plan on making 4 of your anoxic filter boxes...if all goes well, I could add a 5th and start taking out the existing bio media in there. I'm shocked that filter boxes like this aren't sold commercially...it's just mind boggling.
Hi Dr Novak, big fan of yours. The usual configuration of media in canisters follows -> Coarse sponge -> fine wool -> Biological ceramic rings This is so that the bigger particulates are trapped first and do not clog the biological media up. In your video you put the biological media right after the first sponge, followed by more sponges after that. How does this create an anoxic environment?
Water doesn’t go through the BCB bags it goes around it. If you look very closely how it’s stacked in there there’s a lot of void spots. Water will take the path of least resistance therefore the bags will attract through osmosis, diffusion, confectionery action or other means the water will be pulled into the bags or BCB basket. Because water is pulled in very slowly it makes anoxic conditions and not anaerobic conditions. Because it attracts ions and pulls water through as I explained the filter media does not clog and can last from my research over 30+ years before having to even be changed. There’s no other filter out there that hobbies can use that can even come close to making the same claim that it will last 30 to 35 years. For one thing, nobody’s really done the research on other filtration systems for that long of a period.
@@anoxicfiltrationplenums thank you Dr Novak for the explanation! Appreciate it. I'm generally horrible at visualising things, so I apologize if my questions were already answered. As I understand it, the water will flow around the bio ceramic balls (BCB?) instead of through it which creates a low flow environment only in that basket layer. What would be the difference between placing the BCB as the first layer after water intake, and let's say if I shifted it to the end (right before water exits the filter)?
My Eheim Pro 3,filled completely, putting the top on water over flowing, will not start up with out priming so I stopped using it.When the floss got dirty the flow slowed too much, cleaned it monthly with slo flo
I have seen not just Eheim filter do this but others as well They give a flow rate but that is at 0-head and without any meadum in the canister. A good high head pump cost more to make and therefore they are omitted from filters except the ADA Super Jet ones.
I agree on your statement......👍....less expensive nylon mesh is good enough for bacteria to colonise ....instead of. Spending more money for ceramics and matrix.....🤣🤣🤣
The Ecco pro models are badly designed and built. They leak all the time and the plastic handle breaks easily. It should not be beyond manufacturers to construct a simple pump/filter that does not leak? But I suppose that there is not much profit in this! Having to use a bucket of vaseline to get it to seal is a nonsense. My next filter will not be an Eheim!
If you're going to use filter floss you will have to throw it away every few months and then your throwing the good bacteria away also cleaning with tap water could kill the bacteria.
That is Okay to do with an Anoxic System. Don't sweat the small stuff because it will not become a problem like other system if you clean your filter really good. The BCB is never cleaned at all because it does not clog like other filters do.
Good video but I would put the polished pad in the bottom tray
I like Lava rock

HI GUYS Please can you tell me what size is this sponge pads i whant order before arrive my new filter .THX from Poland Great Video
In what size filter is the sponge pad going to fit in?
Hi
Yes to eheim ecco pro 300 sponge. Filter arrived already done
Kind regards
Marcin
Been using the same Eheim 2250 since 1987, just keeps chugging along.
Wow! That is great. 👍
Could rusty steel wool be a substitute for laterite?
No, it’s made of steel not iron. Iron nails yes, steel no.
Thanks for the reply
Great info. I agree. 🐟🌿👍😊
Hi Dr Novak, big fan of yours.
The usual configuration of media in canisters follows -> Coarse sponge -> fine wool -> Biological ceramic rings
This is so that the bigger particulates are trapped first and do not clog the biological media up.
Nice video been looking for an external filter . Whats ur recommended tank size for this filter thx
I may be mistaken but weren’t you going to show how to stop the rattling
Will do for next video just for you Liz.
very informative 👏
I agree on your statement......👍....less expensive nylon mesh is good enough for bacteria to colonise ....instead of. Spending more money for ceramics and matrix.....🤣🤣🤣
I think people think that if they spend more money on a filter material it has to be better. But that’s not necessarily the case with this hobby.
Looking forward to the rattling eheim solution 😀
Very easy fix.
The ceramic does harbor good bacteria.
Yes you’re right but not enough to count on to really do the nitrogen cycle correctly.
