    gr8 video . I did as you have shown , but unfortunately with my brand new 2217 i had no success .I did not give up trying .I noticed a lot of excess vibration , that only lowered slightly improved when i pressed my hand on the pump head.( The seller advised putting a house hold brick on top of it ,rather than replace or exchange. no help from EHIEM UK either.).Anyway the top of the impeller (NOT THE BLADE END ) was bouncing against the top of the head. In my case I added a soft rubber washer around 2mm thick (Some aqua one impeller kits come with rubber washers) or in my case i made rubber washers to fit) ,. to the top end acting as shock absorbers . it acted as both spacer and shock absorbing IT WORKED PERFECT . i have been running classics for years but the latest classic is produced in China an no where near as silent (BUILD QUALITY) as that made in Germany for years .EHEIM get your act together there are too many noise related videos and comments online ,has put me off the brand. I hope, along with your fix, my solution may be of some help to others. GOOD LUCK .Love the classic did not want to give up on a brand new filter.

      how did you make your rubber washers? also tried this plastic thing without results. stacked 9 of the thin ones i made tried on both ends of the impeller without results. wish i knew this before buying...

      @@FreakShowScitchy exactly the same method as shown in the video except I made mine from a small cutting of rubber and kept adding them until I succeed ,also try turning the shaft arround, and switching the small black ends arround on the impeller shaft.... its trial and error. You may notice on the filter ,it says made in PRC. Peoples Republic of China. They are Definitely not as well made as older models made in Germany which is pity. Hope you have better success.

    I bought a new impeller and axle for my eheim 4+ 350. In belief that the problem was wear/wobble.
    But still humming like hell. Im pretty sure vibrations happen when the impeller has contact with those rubber ends. Cos they are not flat.

    Ha! Mine has been driving me mad for a week. Took it apart to clean around the impeller to see if that helped. Put it back together and it was at least as bad. Came across your video, went out to the tool shed to get my drill. When I got back I had to check it hadn't tripped a fuse because it's so quiet! Seems like just the threat of your fix was enough. Thanks - at least I know what to do next time.

    Using shims to tighten up the tolerance, brilliant idea.
    Lessening the manufacturer clearance will also make the impeller last longer due to less run out.

    Neat trick which I will bear in mind although I haven't had problems with noise in my Eheims so far . One thing that I have noticed in an Eheim ecco which had been running for about 8 years is uneven wear on the ceramic impeller shaft . I replaced it just to be safe .

    i found that the impeller rubber bushings shrink and or the motor bore is oversize , i've wrapped teflon tape and crazy glue gel around them sometimes up to 1/16 to quiet them down. i also make shims by slicing air hose.

    Appreciate your honesty on the nitrates reading. It does open up a bit of clarity. Imao, i would think that the filter floss/sponge as the main culprit. Recalled your filter socks on how it would get pretty dirty within the 24-48hrs period. The monte carlo "bomb"of the accumulated uneaten food/poop, that will over time cause spikes.
    Good nice spacer diy.
    Btw, I did put some fine zeolites as a sand cap over my 2yrs plenum substrate and it looks great! My zeolites gravel had arrived and I had placed them in the 3 bcbs in my compainion filter chamber.

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could be absolutely right about the nitrates going up. But then again we would only be guessing if that was the culprit. But it also shows your thinking like I was and that’s why I took the canister apart just to see if it was the corporate. But it also shows funny things can happen until the BCB finally stabilizes and becomes fully activate with bacteria.

    It helped!! For some reason, my Eheim made a loud noise and had reduced flow. Also, the air goes in and I am working on finding out why and how. With two washers the noise kind of remained. I've closed the valve for the water income and exit and I can hear some sort of vibration but without the air bubbles in the canister. Now I need to figure out how to stop the air coming into my room professionel4+ 250. I guess those bubbles are the source of the noise and reduced flow...

    do you think it would be a good idea to make a sump out of a plastic 42 gallon barrel? there could be a plenum at the bottom of the barrel. and have a 24" layer of extra course sand or/and a layer of those ceramic cylinder thingies. and at the top is the bcb baskets. it could have a 3/4" pvc riser pipe going from under the plenum to above the sand for air stone circulation. and have a pump pump out from the bcb basket chamber up to the tank and the overflow out of the tank and through angel hair filter basket sitting on top of the barrel and dump into the barrel.

    Dr. Novak,
    I recently discovered your work of Anoxic filter and it seems like a wonder. I have some questions for you about it:
    - For the koi pond that you had 17 koi in, how big was your anoxic filter?
    - Since it works through ion exchange, how will salting the pond affect it?
    - This is a stretch, but another major reason for water change for koi pond is to get rid of the hormones. Will this filter do miracles on eliminating that as well?
    Thank you

    I had to make mine a little differently because of the model , but same idea of a washer to prop the impeller up. Also the rod was ceramic but the impeller was plastic; I didn’t check to see if mine was made in Germany. I used a little olive oil and a cotton swab to lube the magnet and rod because it should be safe (for a turtle tank and his goldfish buddies that got too big to eat) and I couldn’t find silicone based grease here and apparently petroleum jelly can break down the gaskets. Literally alI I heard was a little air working it’s way out of the system when I started it. I primed it by adding some water to the canister after replacing the medium and, after taking a Clorox wipe the the end of the outlet (maybe a rag if you’ve got sensitive fish?), suck water the rest of the way through like siphoning gas. Just watch the line so you don’t get a mouth full of fish crap.

    • @user-ug5xr2gb6j
      @user-ug5xr2gb6j 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also I found out that pantyhose works great for putting medium in when I needed more medium bags because of how much it stretches, it enables you to conform the medium to your needs.

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums

      Panty hose works great for carbon or a BCB because it's more flexible.

    Some external filters come with a plastic washer top and bottom. The Eheim Classics for example don’t. You can fit a washer on the bottom of a 2213 and it can help. Having taken one impeller apart I can say they aren’t very well made.

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      At one time the Eheim filters were top notch but they are not that way any longer. There are now very competitive filters out there that are better or just as good without the cost.

    Hello Dr. Novak I found your channel through pektec and I had a quick question for you. I do not know if you are familiar with biohome ultimate filter media or not but they say it is capable of growing nitrate consuming bacteria because of its internal structure that creates anerobic areas within the media. I was wondering if those are the same bacteria that would grow and consume nitrate in one of your anoxic filter baskets? If so this would be auch more affordable route to go to reduce nitrates in my tank rather than spend the $50 or so in order to get the proper weight of biohome for my size tank.

    • @OxAintAFanxO
      @OxAintAFanxO 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not put money on biohome ultimate. If you really want that denitrification, you can either go the anoxic filter route, or use Pumice (featherrock). It's a much cheaper media but still as good, just add a couple drops of the seachem trace element to reproduce the extra element additions from the biohome ultimate. I think I bought a bunch of Pond Matrix when I was getting my pumice. $100 gets you a 5-6gallon bucket worth.

    • @zacklothamer9533
      @zacklothamer9533 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OxAintAFanxO thanks I am getting ready to put together a hillstream tank with a high directional water flow to mimic the streams the fish come from. With the river manifold that goes under the substrate to create the directional flow I could incorporate a plenum with that as well as a bcb in the canister filter I plan to use

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are always new products that claim to reduce Nitrates and this has been going on for years. However, they all clog at some point in their life expectancy and then become aerobic only. Denitrification stops and only an acid cleaning with bleach will open up the pores once again. A BCB on the other hand does not clog and the pores remain open to biological and chemical mediators forever without invasive cleaning.
