Really like the fact that there are boards with different profiles, not only the gnarly 40 degrees overhang ^^ It's cool to see on your face how proud you are of your creation ^^ Really curious to see how this project evolves in the future!

      Rent is way too high to have giant warehouses in city centres, so in my country they're almost never an easy place to go without a car.

    I love this, I am colourblind and have hard times seeing what holds i can use sometimes but this makes it so easy.
    just one thought, if you haven´t, you should add how many holds there should be next to where you choose boulder so lets say a hold was supposed to light up but it didn´t you would know.
    Would be frustrating if you try a boulder alot of times and then never realize the LED´s where broken.

    Hey Magnus! Great idea for a gym, esspecially in confined areas! I have one question about the concept: how do you deal with the over-time build-up of chalk, rubber and grease on the holds? In normal climbing gyms, holds are power-washed after a month or so of use, what about these holds? Anyway, really innovative idea and definitly groundbreaking! Hoping to see something similar in Germany soon!

    • @drmyProductions
      @drmyProductions 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think it's the wall that holds all the electronics including the LEDs (you can kinda see it on the wall, there's the main screw-hole and then two roughly LED-sized holes left and right). Then you can just dismount the holds and wash them like you would do with the normal, colored ones. So essentially these are just normal holds, but translucent. (If that's what you were wondering about!)

    • @mishagoldenberg3754
      @mishagoldenberg3754 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@drmyProductions I love the idea of the gym, but the issue with this is that when you do take off the holds and power wash them, you have to put them back on the exact same way or else the thousands of boulders saved to them will be ruined. Even if a hold it on the wrong angle it can really change the difficulty of the problem.

    • @noahk1031
      @noahk1031 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@mishagoldenberg3754 There are ways to mark the wall/holds in order to ensure that they are placed back in the exact same position. I'm sure they will do this if they ever need to take holds off the wall to clean them.

    • @drmyProductions
      @drmyProductions 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@mishagoldenberg3754 That is true. But in that regard it doesn't differ from a traditional gym then and although I guess it is nice to have some epic boulders in the gym for years, it can also be very refreshing to have a new constellation of holds every once in a while. I guess there will be a decent amount of people in those gyms, so you will quickly build up a good library again :-)

    • @richardburgess5101
      @richardburgess5101 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's another problem as well - you cannot so easily stand back from the wall while someone else is climbing and look at the route, planning it out etc. Until you have it memorised. Because when someone else is climbing, all the LEDs on your route turn off.

      @@mathieuh.1241 Nope. I'm currently on holidays there, went 5 times over the past two weeks and going again tomorrow :)
      Not taking anything away from LED though, and hope it'll get adopted more broadly (although it comes with new challenges for route setters)

    Completely unmanned. Cmon, Magnus, is that really how climbing works? Personally, I can't think of a more community driven industry where employees and volunteers play several, critical roles.

    There's just one (admittedly utopian) feature missing: imagine if the whole space were self-cleaning. In my mind there's a car-wash-like contraption being lowered from the ceiling, scrubbing and then drying all the holds every few days. :D

      I like your thinking, but it is probably cheaper to just hire someone to come in and clean. Maybe they could use robot vacuum cleaners if the gym is empty if it is not too difficult with the mats.

    this is awesome... I used to climb and boluder years ago, but then I had to stop due to an injured wrist... but I recently found Your channel and after seeing a few vids, I was thinking about this exact thing... why are there no boulder rooms with LED light holds so the routes can be marked easy and quickly... and now I find this masterpiece :o) wow, it's even better than I imagined it to be... fantastic job Magnus and who ever else was involved in making this ;o)

    This is awesome. I’m interested to see how it performs when it’s crowded. Might be tough to get a chance to switch the boulder while people are constantly hopping on, and the chance to build a boulder could be impossible during peak hours?

    • @MrVannspreder
      @MrVannspreder 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In Magnus' main gym in Oslo it is cheaper to climb during off-peak hours. Maybe doing something similar with this gym in combination with the app informing about how many people are currently there will help prevent the gym from being too crowded the most popular times (evening).

    Really cool, but I reckon this concept would be best in highly populated areas...London, New York, Tokyo ...places where space is really limited. Otherwise I’d prefer a bigger gym with longer routes
