So they thought DK Jr. didn't fit the edgy feel of the game but then they introduced the absolutely gormless Kiddy Kong in DKC 3 anyway? I wonder what drove them to that decision.
The age of the Kongs follow the life expectency of wild gorillas as well, with Cranky being the father of Junior, Junior might be the father of DK and DK being old enough to be the father of Diddy (but he isn't). Cranky's age also supports the theory that Jumpman from Donkey Kong isn't Mario since he should be roughly the same age as Cranky, so Jumpman and Lady might be the parents or even grandparents of Mario and Luigi.
I remember watching the original documentary and I love that this is just a bite sized snippet of the same info. I'd imagine a fair few people would love to have this in such a small form given how shorts driven video algorithms are getting now. A pleasant treat to end my night.

You are the King of DKC as far as I'm concerned since putting out that phenomenal interview a few years back that I keep going back to re-watch - I would love to listen to you pick Rare's brains about DKC2, how it all came about and the decisions made to give us what is quite possibly the best videogame sequel of all time! (At least in my book!)
Remember how the internet went insane over God of War Ragnarök reusing one animation? Here they reused the entire Krem army. Thankfully DKC wasn't canceled over internet outrage, as nobody knew that at the time, and there were no mental asylums called "social media" back in the day either on the internet.

As much as I like and admire the Donkey Kong Country games, some of Rare's creative decisions just didn't sit right with me at all. To be brutally honest, I hate the design they gave DK so much, and going with a brand new character instead of a major icon like Donkey Kong Jr was just dumb. I don't even agree with him not fitting the "edgy style" of the games, when they're also super cartoonish and goofy at the same time. It's like saying the toads don't fit in the Super Mario games. Not to mention that they had no problem introducing a baby kong character in the third instalment.

Who's playing alongside Junior in Mario Tennis, then? His father, or his son? (Probably best not to think about it too much.)

And if Baby Mario can race against adult Mario then DK can play tennis with his toddler dad. The Mario universe has never make sense when it comes to stuff like that.

I'd chalk it up to a mistake by DK64's writers. But yeah, I'm not going to waste too much thought on trying to unravel the Mario universe and its timelines (try adding Yoshi's Story into the mix, too)!

DKC3 was led by a different group within Rare. That’s why most fans prefer the first two games anyways.
