    Sales Engineer here. I sell plastics processing equipment, metal fabrication and metal working equipment. My education is 2 years of community collage in Machine Tool Technology and several years working in machine job shops, mold making and plastic injection shops when I was younger. One of our top earners makes close to 300K a year.

    Bruh, I applied to become a data engineer and they put me as a sales engineer (My finance was in the red, so I just take it anyway). It's been 6 months, most of the works are still carried by my senior sales engineer, and I still don't really know what I'm doing XD

      Hello Andrew! I realize your comment was made a long time ago, but I am a Sales Engineer for an enterprise software company and have been for the last 10 years. I started out as a sales person in another techical field, Telecommunications. I was always interested in technology and computers, so that was my hobby. That lead me into telecom sales (phone lines, internet service, telephone equipment, etc.). As I moved through my sales career I continued to be interested in computers and was almost always selling one type of tech or the other, because that stuff was fun to me. When I had enough technical knowledge and sales experience, I went for an interview for an SE position and I have never looked back! How do you know when? When I read the job description and said, "I can do that!". I didn't have a bachelors degree when I got my first SE job, just the skills necesary and the confidence to ask for a chance. I love what I do, and after years of experience I make more than the BLS median income for this position and I enjoy going to work every day. I hope this helps.

    Hey I had a important question for anyone. I am currently in this mix of becoming a software engineer or a sales engineer. I really love front end developing as I’m currently studying many programming languages, but this sales engineer seems pretty interesting to me. I was thinking doing a boot camp on either career or even both but don’t know which to exactly go with. Is their a way to be a sales engineer, at the same time develop or program websites. I feel like having the knowledge for both would be helpful. I am also pursuing a BS degree in business management and would like to know if that’s a good idea for working in Tech.

    • @alexisidro
      @alexisidro  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would look for positions as Sales Engineers, and then apply directly. You already have a solid technical background, and so the sales training itself would be provided by the company. I saw a lady who was going through this as a graduating engineer; her company gave her the sales training.

      Damian I am a sales engineer. I’ve worked in industrial automation technology sales for the past 15 years after finishing under grad in EE. I honestly think I make more than 95% of my engineering customers. It’s a great field but demanding very as well. I couldn’t see myself working solely as an engineer. Sales is much more flexible.

      It's more of an on-the-job training position. You become eligible, generally speaking, with a STEM degree (but you don't have to have one, as long as you gained experience somewhere else).
      Look for entry level positions and apply tailoring your resume to what they ask. I have resume and cover letter samples at alexisidro.com if you're interested!
