Thoughts on when testing new switches, you could make a test board with plywood and Sheetrock with an outlet box and a small light fixture . And have it powered via a DIY extension cord if you wanted to test it in multiple areas of the house. That way you can leave your home untouched.
Just two weeks ago I was gone and my wife called me “we have no water”. She had something to Siri that caused a bunch of stuff to shut off, including the water 😂.
Enjoy the behind the scenes videos like this buddy. Gives a good snapshot of your whole setup and how you implement different ideas with all the various tech 👍.
I think this video was just a way for Shane to show off those guns! Definitely not skipping those workouts! 💪🏼😎👍🏼 Seriously though thanks for sharing the nuts and bolts of your operation! ❤
This is great, Shane. I’ve got that same Notes based Smart Home to do List. One thing I’d like to see in more detail is setting up the on/off lights for sections of a room with the FP2. I have a few set up but rushed the programming thereby ensuring nothing worked!
I like it when someone else admits to the same, "got it but haven't installed it yet" shortcomings I have. And, that is for a lot more than just home automation stuff.
Suggestion. If not done yet, Invest in yourself by doing your electrical wireman’s license (whatever your local authority equivalent is). This will ensure you do possibly safe installs and cover you for insurance etc.
Good stuff as usual Shane. I may be doing something similar soon. Instead of swapping Lutron over to the Diva/Claro line...I have a few (6?) WeMo & Aqara Switches remaining that I want to move over to the original Caseta Switches. Nothing urgent...but keep thinking about doing it just so everything in the Home looks uniform. Thanks, as usual for the content. P.S. - I enjoy when you do the '2 Shanes' stuff in your videos. Still waiting for 'nerdy, door-to-door-salesperson Shane' to make another appearance. :)
Haha thanks Brad! Haven’t seen that Shane in a while. Maybe it’s time for a special appearance 😂 Yea my ocd was getting a little aggravated with all the different switches I had. And when some go no response… well then it’s just about unbearable.
Shane, with the new Casetta Diva switches, you don’t need to use a pick remote to do a 3 way, just a dumb 3 way switch, the instructions show you o change the wiring at the dumb switch.
I wanted them all to be the same style so I don’t mind switching them (previous switches were the toggle switch instead of decoration style). I did also get some of the Caseta Accessory switches for some of the 3-way switches…another good option.
8:08 I have an 8-going-on-13 year old daughter - classic response to any smart home related comments *IGNORE* haha great video! You've inspired me to check out Eve!
Hello questions yes about what I saw it was the RGB do you have the Govee? Do you have a video or Could you do you some more information on this? I purchased the hexagon panels, but don’t want to actually attach them to the walls. I want to look for some alternative ways to Mount.
Have you had any problems with the Aqara FP2. I have it in my bathroom and I worked really well until there was an update. Now I've got it mostly working but it's every so often it doesn't see me or it sees me until I bend down. Are you using an Aqara hub to make it work? I've had Parkinson's symptoms for over 28 years. I only have my iPhone and no longer have access to a computer. Sometimes my tremor is so bad that I can't turn on the light switch because my hand is shaking so much. I could just ask Siri to turn them on, but I liked the automation. Also, do you know how to use the presence sensor and light sensor at the same time in a Home app automation? I'd like to detect presents but then also check to make sure the light level is below certain level before turning on the light. The bathroom is nicely lit during the day.
Simply aesthetics. (or maybe OCD?). I've just been wanting to have the same style switches throughout the house for a while. I'm still using some of the older ones in some of the bedrooms, etc. but I now have the new style throughout the main parts of the house.
any video on home security network ? very easy way to brake in to the home system is smart devices, unfortunately not many people taks about it. It will be great Shane how you see this subject. Thanks
Hey greetings, big fan of your videos. I need some assistance. I recently upgraded from a iphone 10x max to a 15 pro max. I updated from cloud. On completion I cannot access my Home. Everything is unavailable except for all homepods saying configuring. This has been so a couple days. I have wiped and reinstall, rebooted, checked all setting, removed and re added homepods, logged out and logged into cloud again. I Dont know what else to try help, any suggestions?
Shane how is your experience so far with the Homey Pro. I keep reading on the community forum about issues with zigbee. Are you using any zigbee devices and if so are you seeing any issues. I have been playing around with the HP for a few weeks now and so far its been pretty solid for me. Loving the Flows. Very easy to use.
Hey Jason, I'm really enjoying using the Homey Pro. I set it up and tested it for review a while back. I'm still using it, as you can see in the video, which probably says a lot. I also really like the Flows. I find them reliable and easy to setup. I don't have a lot of zigbee devices paired directly to Homey. Most of my devices in Homey are Wifi or matter over Thread. The exception is the Aqara water sensors. I've had some trouble pairing some of the older ones to the hub, but the newer ones work fine. And once paired, there is no problem from what I can tell.
@@ShaneCreates Thats good to hear. I am testing both the Homey Pro and the Hubitat. The Hubitat is great except for the UI but I guess if you get the automations right there is very little use for a dashboard. Plus everything shows up in HomeKit so I can use that for when I need to manually control something. The Homey is also great so its making it hard to decide which one to stick with.
I also tested Hubitat for a while and came to the same conclusion. Worked great but the UI was awful. Homey won me over between the UI and the Flows. Hubitat always felt like a chore to use while Homey is really a pleasure to use.
@@ShaneCreates I think it's a bit more professional, it has touch bars and touch buttons. On a sidenote, if you have it, have you noticed that the MEROSS power strip is quite unreliable? I just got it today and it already went no response three times, requiring a reboot every time.
I've a far out question one that was based off your AQARA light vid ! Anyways if a person has an existing eufy security door bell camera can a person tie in in activities so that my smart inside entrance light comes on when door bell has a notification ? I use google assistant and just thought that would be neat to see the inside entrance light to come on when door bell is triggered ! What's your thoughts lol Possible or not ? Lol
Well I don't use the Eufy doorbell or Google Home much so I can't be sure. It just depends if you can access the doorbell button press in Google Home as an automation trigger. In HomeKit, for example, I can create an automation that turns on my foyer lights when the doorbell is pressed at night.
@@ShaneCreates I hear ya Shane , I'll one day check a little deeper into that ! Thanks You've a nice set up too , nice to tweak around like this eh hehe I'm not to to far behind you lol , my water shuts off too when triggered , BAZZ set up for that , it's what they sell locally so 🤷♂️ tho all tied in and works sweet . Keep up the good work and exploring , a Canadian fan 👍
Yes. I get asked just about every week lol. I've never really had the need (or time) for HA, but since so many people ask me about it all the time, I will likely get a HA instance up and running eventually just to tinker around with it and see if it's worth the hype 😂
@@ShaneCreates hahah, the thought I wasn’t first to ask crossed my mind. However I’ve just bought HA green, so genuinely am looking forward to your video on HA
I really. Need that network closet. I feel like my devices are so slow, and just not having a great home experience. I have 8 Logitech circle view cameras, an eco bee thermostat, meros garage door opener, Yale front door lock, and 4 sets of lifx lights. And cameras are always dropping. Takes hours to buffer to the last 10 clips if you can even get to them, the lights go awol, my garage door currently just doesnt work and its because I had to change passwords before i could get that device onto the new network AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I digress. I think a more stable network is in need among other things. Like not using these cameras or HomeKit itself. I dont know
I know a while ago hubitat was what a lot of people wanted to use with homekit. Is there a reason you think that you went to homey instead? Why other tech TH-camrs have done the same?
I also used hubitat for a while before homey. Hubitat had great capability but the interface was really bad. It really comes down to Homey is just a real pleasure to use and Hubitat feels more like a chore (for me personally)
That's a reasonable solution, especially for someone without homey pro or something similar. Personally, I needed a z-wave hub to pair the EcoNet Bulldog to anyways, so I might as well just keep it all in Homey for that.
Shane thanks to your review of the Tailwind garage controller, I bought it and its one of my favorite Homekit accessories.

Hi Shane, great video. Just wondering do you still use your smart home iPad dashboard or not? Considering doing it myself, but not sure if worth it.
Great video! Looks like my typical Saturday 😅

I think I’ve seen on your videos Apple HomeKit security stickers in your windows. Where did you get those?
Nice! When you use Matter smart devices, you're not lockdown into Apple ecosystem 💯
Pretty interesting, also for my German setup 🤔Unfortunately the Lutron switches are not compatible in the EU I would love it if already 🥹

I'm using Kasa switch everywhere via homebridge. Its surprising to heat that the switch is unreliable to you. maybe matter version is a proble.
My smart home is an absolute mess as well. Not sure what’s the deal but I am nearly ready to just give up on it all.

I’m a spicing doing these that make my life harder. That includes trouble shooting “smart” home things. It’s not ready.

what is the app or program you are using for your flows at timestamp 5:25?
That is Homey Pro. Full video here: th-cam.com/video/Y6jGIVRv-7Y/w-d-xo.html

I've found most of the Meross products to be quite unreliable. That's why I replace the last remaining one in this video... tired of "no response."
