Cool! Wish my mom was still alive so I could do this for her!! My sister visited a week ago and got the bug when I programmed an Aqara switch to turn her bedroom lights on and off with options for 100% and 30%. Suspect she will be calling for me to make this possible at her house!
Thanks for watching Don! I think my parents have the bug... it's pretty obvious with my Dad. And my mother has already called asking to help make something else in her home smart, so I guess she has it now too!
Oh man what an opportunity! My mom went all-in on Amazon garbage knowing full well how amazing Apple Home is. I'm slowly bringing her over. Great video!
Shane now in phase two you have to give your dad a whole house water shutoff if the water sensor goes off and my dad was a tech geek in his day I wish he was still here to see all the things you can do now with your smart home. Remember everyone enjoy these opportunities with your parents because one day hopefully a long time from now the opportunity will no longer be there. You’re a good man Shane, taking care of your parents and your grandparents. Enjoy doing it together God bless you.
Thanks so much for the kind words and friendly reminder! I agree with you. Took me a while to grow up and realize this, but glad I did eventually 😃. The water shut off valve is a great idea! That just might have to make it to 2.0!
I love your videos. Setting up this type of stuff gets me excited, I love the Apple ecosystem. 😊 Just curious, why didn’t you hard wire the doorbell on the garage, I would think that would save them from having to worry about recharging the battery? What happened to your arm? I hope you recover quickly. EDIT: I saw your reply below.
I watch all to time… good stuff. I have a question about the T2. I mounted it in the garage the operate both my garage doors. I used a 12v transformer to power it. Isn’t the T2 suppose to be a Zibee repeater? The zibee signal on the Aqara contact door sensor I put on the door is very weak.
How cool that today I was checking out the Switchbot BF sales and low and behold yours truly Mr. Whatley is their expert poster child! Congrats and use tiger balm patches on the sore joints. ❤️💪🏼😎👍🏼❤️
Thanks for watching! Yea, that's what it's like for my grandfather... he's about 2 hours away also. That's why setting things up that you can troubleshoot and adjust remotely, as much as possible, is very important.
I actually don't use many smart bulbs personally. I wouldn't want to use them in a parent's house either unless it was for a lamp/figure and there is no wall switch (otherwise they would flip the switch and kill the smart bulb connection). If I did use them I would probably go with Nanoleaf Essentials (affordable, connects via Thread, no additional hub) or Philips Hue (but only if there are a lot of bulbs since it requires an additional hub).
Your Dad looks like he is chillin' in that chair. I think he is going to use that Aqara smart button a lot from that chair. Oh, and since this is a "Members Only" video, I think we have all already subscribed. Unless you are planning on releasing this to the General Public.
Haha yes he’s gotten a little more “laid back” since retirement 😂 And yes, I released this video early to members. It will go public to everyone soon. Trying something new by giving members early access to new videos.
EDIT - Saw you answered below already. Thanks and great video! ----- I use the Aqura mini switches throughout my house. How do you program a single press to both turn on and turn off? Does this need to be done in the Aqara app rather than the home app?
Thanks Nick! At my grandpa’s house I just used smart plugs on his lamps and then automated them with Aqara buttons. He uses lamps mostly. I didn’t do any lighting (other than the Christmas tree and lightstrip) at my parents’ house. Not yet. That will likely be part of “phase 2.” I will probably go with smart switches so they can still use the wall switches.
@@ShaneCreates thank you for the response. I was curious because I know you don’t use alot of smart bulbs! Already bought some Black Friday Aqara stuff. Have a great Thanksgiving
Looks like you owe the wife dinner. 😂 She looked a little impatient in the background of one of the part of the video. My wife rolls, her eyes a lot of times when it comes to my upgrading the house. She considers our home to be “booby trapped”.
Great job Shane! Can you share how you programed the Aqara button (mini switch) to work? I have two buttons (one as the “on” and the other the “off”) but would rather have it run that if statement that it appears you have.
Thanks for watching! If you are controlling other Aqara products, like the lightstrip as I have in this video, it's super easy in the Aqara app. You can make the button "toggle" another Aqara device on a single press. It's not as easy if automating other HomeKit devices in the Apple Home app. When setting up your button automation, you have to "convert to shortcut" and then use an IF ACTION: IF the light is on, turn it off. OTHERWISE, turn it on.
Thanks for watching! I discussed installing one of those for them also, but ultimately decided to hold off. You're right, that might be a future installation. I decided to take it slow as not to overwhelm them with too much new tech.
Awesome video Shane! I predict this becomes one of your most popular. What a great way to share Smart Home tech. My water sensors have proven invaluable! In fact, I’m now inspired to add more to my home. And you may have sold me on the Aqara hub…⚡️
Haha thanks for watching Eric! I agree, those water sensors are indeed invaluable. They have definitely notified me of leaks before they became a big problem. I think I buy more and more every Prime Day or Black Friday. I have them everywhere! 😆
Merci beaucoup

Hey Shane, great video. I'd like to know more about the Aqara Doorbell cam. I have a Ring doorbell cam on the house when I bought it, but I hate it. I'd like to know about how to use it wired, etc. Also, I have an M1S hub; would it make sense to add the M2?
Thanks for watching. Here a link to my Aqara Video Doorbell video: th-cam.com/video/nDFTvAEPRMs/w-d-xo.html I don't see a need to add an M2 hub if you are happy with your M1S hub. I'm using the M1S hub as my primary Aqara hub. It's also what I'm using at my grandfather's house.
Thanks for watching! Sorry if I missed your previous comment. In the home app, you can change the device type and icon for certain device types. For example a smart plug, as in this example, you can to "display as" a fan, plug, or switch. It's an option in the smart plug device settings.
Apple Home currently doesn't support kitchen appliances like Samsung yet. Hopefully with the Matter standard, that will change in the near future. Most people who want to integrate products (that don't natively support HomeKit) into Apple Home will use HomeBridge. It's a little more advanced than your "out-of-the-box" solutions but it's not too hard and is probably the best way to accomplish something like this.
@@ShaneCreates thanks!!! Do you have a video for homebridge? I’m stuck at adding the actual accessories. I signed in to my smart things app via homebridge but nothing shows up.

I set up a separate home for my parent's house also. I just created it on my phone and then shared access to them. Once you "invite" someone else to have access to the home, they can control everything just the same.
