- China's secretive J-20 'Mighty Dragon' fighter jet has gone on public display on the ground for the first time.
Entering service in 2017, the J-20 is China's answer to the US F-22 Raptor and one of the world's few fifth-generation warplanes.
We've compared the Chinese fighter jet to the F-22 and F-35 aircraft.

@@kopite8971You've got that right. the battle of britain was also won on several factors. good British secret service. aircraft crashing, the pilots who survived could be picked up from the English and returned to work. and a very good plane and more experienced pilots over longer periods of time. the Germans had a very poor intelligent network, they received a lot of misinformation and pilots lost them when they crashed in England and the surrounding area. . I also think that the BF 109 Messersmith was a less aircraft than the Spitfire more competitive with the Hawker Huracine. and the choice to move from military targets to civilian targets is what ultimately cost the Germans too much manpower.
correction: there are more J-20's in service than the F-22 today...there are over 200+ J-20's and more are being built. While the US has 170ish F-22? and that's it.

@@joosiekawk the J20 is a great fighter but now the challenge starts with the next phase which is monitoring/improving/upgrades/tests etc. Even with new engines this is part of execution & improvement of all human-made technology on this planet. Something that the US has been doing for 20+ years with the Raptor F22 fleet. So China is 20 years behind in this phase in comparison with the USA. Again remember that the upgraded Raptors are 5+ th gen and J20 is still an early 5th gen in development. With development I do not mean production, but test/monitoring/improvements design/upgrades/tests etc.

The J-20 actually has quite a few variants, not only does it have 2 and single seat variants, but it also has 3 different types of engines, when it was first made it used imported Russian engines (cant remember which one) and then transitioned to an upgraded WS-10 used on the J-10C and J-15 and now it uses the WS-15 engine.

@@ado5182Sorry, the J20 in China uses the domestically developed and produced WS10 engine, and the latest Ws15 engine is also equipped in the latest batch of aircraft.
The J20 has front canards but the F20 and F35 do not use canards. It is a totally different design in aerodynamics. But strange that the commentator keeps saying there are similarities and China must have stolen data. In engineering there is a concept of convergence of design. That is given a set of physical and chemical principles to solve an engineering design problem the solution looks similar. For example bows and arrows. In prehistoric times with little or no communications, isolated countries or communities have bows and arrows. Although different in size, lengths and materials all bows and arrows look similar.
I like the concept “convergence of design “ and I knows for long time is absolutely true.

China must be working out strategies on how best to use combined mixes of J20, non stealth fighters, and old generation fighters converted into drones. And now add loyal drone wingman to the mix. Now add Various Missile load outs including future missiles under development. The last key variable is sensor networks on the ground, in the air and in orbit and ECM aircraft

Just an FYI - there are at least 150 J-20s in service at this time with some experts in Chinese military aviation believing there might be more than 200 now flying. I'm not sure where the 74 in-service number came from but that's not accurate.

J-20's maximum speed is 2.55 Mach when equipped with WS-10C engines(China's state media once reported that J-20's pilot said J-20 flied 52 kilometers per minute. That is 2.55 Mach), J-20's maximum speed is 2.8 Mach when equipped with WS-15 engines. The total number of J-20 in service is more than 200 right now. Media revealed that production capacity of J-20 production lines is 120 per year.

I think it's a very sleek plane. Look wise awesome. I am not a technical guy but engine nozzles are not covered! How they minimize IR signatures? Can anyone please elaborate.
Common theme with Chinese and Russian “stealth” aircraft. Have the outward appearance of having stealth features but are missing the less glamorous details such as the correct nozzles, frameless canopies etc.
I feel these aircraft are produced for the purpose of optics rather than having a major military value. The reality is the US is still decades ahead in technology and capability.

@@robertm5160 Sir IR missiles don't follow exhaust of a jet engine. It track hot part of it. Part of the J20's engine is exposed and thus easier for IR missiles to track. F35's engine nozzle is also open. ( otherwise how the gas will pass) but beside the nozzle no other part is exposed. So lesser IR signature. I think you also know that.
The nozzles do have stealth features. If you look closely it has serrations to reflect some of the RF. Also it is not like the f22 because round nozzles are more efficient. They are maximizing the power from the engines by leaving the nozzles round.
The Raptor's engines are probably extremely efficient, as well as an order of magnitude more stealthy than any round nozzles out there... which is basically everything OTHER than a -22.
If there was any sort of tangible efficiency issue, it doesn't seem that any the countries that are trying to develop rectangular nozzles care much about it.
Jets are just delivery platforms, who has the best air-to-air missile.

As a Chinese person, I must say the J20 is getting close to F-22, but F-22 was built over 20 years ago, there must be new advanced fighter jets already developed by the US military, so there is no need to argue at air superiority at this time.

Actually they keep updating the F22. Because of lack of stealth in the J20 is very comparable. With the J20 and F35 hardly have a payload unless they carry under wings and lose all stealth. F22 carries more in the belly. The range of the radar of J20 and F22 are close, F22 has 200km, J20 has 170km. At their speeds that is mute point. I have always said even with crappy range of flight, I would still take a Raptor over the others

The F-22 wold be detected and targeted through the J-20's IRST long before the AESA radars of each aircraft detect each other.
The external appearance can be imitated, but it is not easy to imitate the technology, because aircraft or combat equipment is not about the appearance but the technology used.
Both aircraft was never tested in real life scenario. China wins this one because of its long range capabilities. The Chinese aircraft seems to get a lot from the Russian technology and engineering. But it is good to see a new aircraft and does not need an entire GDP of the country to fund the program.

All j20, f22 and f35 is different In terms of roles.

F22: aggressive dogfight fighter
F35: b2 spirit but less bombs and faster.
The F-35 doesn't even need to ever dogfight, it can destroy threats from an entirely different country before they even know they're under attack, like happened in the Iran-Iraq War. It's like a mini B2 with better stealth, that can use the best missiles the world currently has. I heard it's an absolute nightmare trying to get new-ish missiles to work with old planes, especially the F-16.

@@byhyewI believe all LO aircrafts in peacetime have Luneberg lenses installed in the fuselage to avoid proper reading of the RCS. I think this is the reason why the Indians saw the J-20, the Americans with the J-20 and vise versa for the Chinese.

Quick reminder: nine months ago, videos just like this one talked about how powerful Russia's military was, including their 4th & 5th gen fighters. That all turned out to be complete rubbish. More well-choreographed propaganda (that many believed) than actual reality. When push came to shove, Russia was/is rather pathetic.
We don't know much about the J-20, but I don't think it's nearly as capable as many suggest. They do look the part, just like the much vaunted SU-57 (where has that been, BTW?). In short, not much to worry about, get on with your lives. 😅
And Russian GDP is equivalent to that of a third rate Chinese province, while China is churning out more engineers per year than the total population of engineers in America.

Russian jets had outdated avionics. I mean they're the only 4++ gen fighters still using PESA radars.
In theory China's jets seem to be more advanced
J-20 primary mission is for taking out US, Japanese and Australian AWACS's and Tankers. WVR or "Within Visual Range" is its second mission and its too heavy and fat to do it well.
Same with the Russia A2A missiles. Most of their newer models were designed to knock out Western AWACS.
It's still lighter than the F15 so I don't see exactly why it can't do well in WVR, whats it's bigger problem is actually is the lack of a cannon for dogfighting
J20 is more of a hybrid between an attack aircraft and a flighter. Since China doesn't have stealth bombers yet, they will have a great role to play on air to surface attacks.
J 20 has F35 style EOTS which will make a big difference in helping them spot F22 first.
Assuming both sides will not open their radar which will give away their position, and awacs on both sides can't spot incoming flighters until it's too late.

The stealth and especially the sensors of the f35 specifically are the most advanced in the world no doubt about it but i wouldnt scoff at what china's done. They've leaped forward technologically at a very fast rate and left their father Russia in the dust, i wouldnt underestimate them.

J20 will have loyal wingman drones with dual seater versions, with missiles that outrange anything usa has. F22 cannot get inside china's anti access area denial range, any us forces which do will be destroyed like a joke, and any fight between china and usa will be in Taiwan or south china seas. The thing about the F-35 is we don't yet know the specifics of why it's so incredible, all that stuff is classified. But like Lazerpig said, the F-35 is like a gun, and all other planes are like crossbows. They're not even comparable. With modern missiles, it doesn't even need to be in the same country as the enemy. We can't actually make realistic comparisons

China has 128 of them as of feb 2023 ..and all combat ready ,your estimation of 74 almost 3 months ago was not accurate at all.. the US has 123 and that doesn’t exclude non combat ready ones

The thing a lot of people don't understand about the J-20 is that it doesn't actually need on paper superiority to the f-22. The PLAA having a viable stealth fighter in numbers alone is a huge hinderance to any armed conflict with China. It's going to be far more difficult to get f35s (let alone f-22s) into a realistic engagement with China than for the Chinese to field a J-20 (particularly considering that the J-20 nearly doubles the f-35's range.) Other than that, the f-35 has various faults which would make an engagement with a J-20 very difficult such as instability and possible structural damage at speeds greater than or equal to Mach 1, limited payload (compared to the J20B), significantly less low speed high AOA maneuverability (though this issue is secondary), etc.

Coming from a uk 🇬🇧 government family with army and navy and mod in my family I have a little insight into things like this all 3 are good but If I was to pick one I would say the USA 🇺🇸 with there F22 is still king 👑 of the skies if it comes to speed the F22 is king 👑 if it comes to power the f22 is still king 👑 but if it comes down to how many jobs a plan can do the f35 lighting type c/a have it covered as for china 🇨🇳 they made a good yet for moving around the skys but it’s to early to know for sure it’s specs but in a dog right your not going to beat the f22 the USA 🇺🇸 have always been ahead of the pack and that’s coming from some one that lives in the uk 🇬🇧 I’m just being honest I’m klad we have a strong relationship 😅 the tf-x is looking like a good yet also

The J-20's "stealth" is about on par with an F/A-18 E/F Superhornet. They've got something like 100 times the radar cross-section of an F-35 and probably 1000 times that of an F-22. Also, their engines are problematic. They're very unreliable and not as powerful as the Chinese intended. Their long range missiles are supposed to be pretty good, though. If it came to a fight, probably the first indication that the Chinese pilot will have that he's actually in a fight is the detonation of an F-35's AIM-120 warhead right next to him.

Where did you get that misinformation from? The su57 is the one with an RCS similar to the F/A-18 not j20. The engines of the J20 are the WS10C which is more reliable and powerful than the russian one it used (the AL30) and can allow the jet to supercruse.
FYI: the military has said the f35 is actually the more stealthier jet when compared to f22

Instead, 75% of the value of a C-919 comes from critical western parts, including engines and avionics. That said, the democratic West has never been about mere parity in the air or anywhere else against chronically poor governments, and it would be nice to see clear western military superiority, even if we have to pay for it. It's good the see that the Chinese Communist theft of western IP, especially in computer chips, is finally being addressed.

US is retiring 34 F-22 in next year. The total number of F-22 in service is dwindling whereas J-20 production is increasing.

Chinese planes are more than enough to be a shield against US and its satellites, because its nor just planes that are involved but also air defense and Chinese is far superior, but there are other elements as well like long range artillery and ballistic missiles which can target bases for example.
