Hoping the best for the KF-21. It looks to be a promising new airframe, and it is a beautiful looking plane. I think the domestication rate for the KF-21 in terms of parts is 65% or something (unsure of the exact number) which is already phenomenal. This starts off as a 4.5 gen, but fundamentally, it has the building blocks necessary for a 5th gen and possibly a 6th gen upgrade. Lockheed is an advisory partner, but did not give out any core technologies (AESA radar, IRST, EOTS, weapons/flight control software, stealth coating, etc) as someone commented in another post here, to the best of my knowledge. They were supposed to I think, when South Korea bought the F-35A, but they refused to transfer tech in the end. Lockheed helped guide the airframe design, but most core technologies were developed by South Korea which makes things more impressive.

The current development in USA seems to be making 6th gen into a stealthy flying control-center for small swarm of stealthy companion drones that carry all the weaponry etc.. As such every 6th gen might be comparable to a flight of earlier jets and so the cost will stay high and production numbers too low for economy of scale.

Yet if I show you this plane for a split second from a frontal side view, you would easily mistake it for an F-22, but again, since it's South Korea it's an amazing and spectacular and I'm not saying it isn't, but it looks like every other jet that tries to be angular and stealthy 5th Gen, from the KF-21, J-20, FC-31, Su-57, Su-75, TF Kaan all the way to the Mitsubishi F-X.

For Australia, the KF-21 would indeed be a good option. Currently, Indonesia has been delaying its 20% share of the payment for years, only demanding excessive technology transfers that differ from the initial contract. South Korea has requested that Indonesia at least submit a plan for the share payment, along with compliance with the contract, but the Indonesian government has even missed the promised deadline for the payment plan. In this situation, if Australia, one of South Korea's closest allies, were to cover Indonesia's share, it would be a very welcome move for South Korea too.

One aspect that should not be overlooked is ‘Korea’s production capacity.’ Looking at the production speed and production volume of the K-9 self-propelled howitzer, K-2 MBT, and FA-50, you can predict how fast and productive they will be. The delivery time of military weapons delivered by Korea to Poland and India was within the contracted time or faster.
This fact is important not only for weapons production, but also for maintaining them and ensuring operational time.

You can’t really compare heavy industry, of which South Korea has the best in the world, with advanced aerospace platforms. However, due to a strong base of highly skilled personnel and experience in other areas of tech, it is likely they can compensate for their late entry into military aircraft production. So, while I expect them to stay on track with their goals, it’d be overly optimistic to say they’ll be ready to start producing hundreds of these aircraft anytime soon. This 4th gen aircraft (it’s not 5th gen in any way), is also clearly a warm up in order to domestically produce a 6th gen aircraft as it is unlikely the US will be willing to sell anyone their 6th gen platform at any point.

And, even then, the aerospace market has gotten way too big and competitive lately for this to be a good gamble for Australia. You’ve got the US, France, Sweden, Russia, China, Japan all with mature military airspace industries and South Korea, India, Turkey and more now getting into the game with a decade head start on you. Moreover, Australia has no labor cost advantage. Not sure what you would stand to gain, especially since most countries will sell military tech to Australia.

Among the contracts between Lockheed Martin and KAI are as follows.
FA-50 has a constraint that it cannot exceed the latest F-16 specification.
So the FA-50 has its limits.
However, the FA-50 is a cost-effectiveness and has a full role to play.
Very powerful as a 5th generation pilot training, proximity support, and small multi-roll fighter.
It must be a very useful aircraft for both training and practice.
      Armed forces are also evolving.
      In Block 2
      AIM-9 Sidewinder
      AIM-7 Sparrow
      AGM-65 Maverick
      IRIS-T
      KEPD 350K-2
      AIM-120 AMRAAM
      It will be armed.
What is unusual is that the Korean-made AESA Radar is better than the US-made Radar with performance limits.
However, due to the inherent limitations of FA-50, it seems to be impossible to mount.
      However, KF-21 has no constraints.
This is because Korea has developed core technologies such as AESA Radar, IRST, EOTGP, and RF Jammer.
The interior armament is also under development and the MUM-T system is also under development.
We're testing to control three drones with wingmen
It is being developed as a multi-purpose fighter with more than five generations at the same time as the development of internal armoured windows.
The AESA radar developed by Korea is a gallium nitride material and is powerful.
It is currently used in Korean Aegis destroyers, M-SAMs, and L-SAMs.
Gallium oxide materials that are much more powerful than gallium nitride materials are also being developed.
      Korea has strong EMP technology.
      RF-Jammer is also very powerful.
It will reach NGJ-MB performance enough.
IRST is currently on board the frigate and in use.
EO-TGP is already applied to FA-50.
Core equipment is constantly being upgraded with the development of new technologies.
KF-21 Boramae is the name of a falcon when its young is raised for hunting.
Boramae is called the Little Raptor, but in the near future, it will evolve into the fifth and sixth generation fighter jets that will shine on itself.

Notably, the description of King Dongmyeong of Goguryeo in the "Three Kingdoms History" dating back to 37 BC shows that the name "Donghae" is a historic name that is more than 2,000 years old in the Korean Peninsula. @Kagax0223 The notation for Sea of Japan (Sea of Japan) appears a long time later. This is because the national name of Japan was originally created in the 7th century, and the name of Sea of Japan was not properly established until the 19th century, even in Japan. [8] Japan claims that Matteo Ricci's book of Gonyeomanguk, produced in 1602, was an example of the first document indicating Sea of Japan and that the name of 'Sea of Japan' was also used from the early 17th century. Rather, this case suggests that the Japanese themselves did not recognize the name of the East Sea waters as 'Sea of Japan'.

In the South Korean National Assembly, South Korea's main enemy is Japan. Therefore, for them, China, their suzerain, and North Korea, their compatriots who are at war with South Korea, are not the main enemies of South Korea. The main equipment of the KF-21 is either existing technology imported from other countries or manufactured under license. The KF-21's engine and armament are imported, so even if it is possible to repair the aircraft in South Korea, the operating rate is low. Currently, South Korea does not have the budget to purchase machine guns for the F35 or to update the F35. South Korea must transport the broken F35 by ship to Australia for repair. Therefore, South Korea scrapped the F35 that had belly-landed.

After the F-35 bombing, the KF-16, F-15K, and KF-21 can handle the ground bombing.
There is no reason to operate many F-35s, which are expensive to maintain.
The US is overcharging for the F-35 update, so KF-21 production will be increased by up to 300 units.
If a country with a smaller defense budget than South Korea operates the F-35, its defense budget will be insufficient.
GE F414 engine can be produced in South Korea under license, and weapons are gradually being developed in Soith Korea, so there is no major problem.

@@honshin23 Like South Korea, both Russia and China have huge debts. North Korea is on the verge of starvation. In an attempt to overcome this, they may start a war. (Russia has already started) At that time, their target is a country with poor military power. South Korea has that condition. It's not about the amount of weapons or the amount of soldiers. Its military capabilities. During WW2 and the Korean War, many Korean soldiers often abandoned their weapons and fled. The current weapons utilization rate in South Korea is said to be less than 25%. In other words, the South Korean military is the weakest in Asia. South Korean troops participated in the Vietnam War as American mercenaries. Their targets were South Vietnamese and North Vietnamese citizens, not North Vietnam. The reason why the Vietnamese government is indifferent to the Lai Dai Han issue is because most of the victims are former South Vietnamese citizens who were enemies. After WW2, a Korean general of the Japanese Army was executed in the Philippines by the Allied forces as a Class A war criminal. He was the commander in chief of POW camps in Asia. His crime was ``conniving in the abuse of Allied prisoners of war by Korean guards.'' Now and in the past, the Korean military targets only the weak, not the enemy forces.

The Australian Prime Minister shared various opinions with the Korean President about China's pressure. Korea has already suffered enormous economic threats from China due to the deployment of THAAD missiles, and numerous Korean investments have disappeared into thin air. Australia also recently shared this pain with Korea and agreed to close military cooperation. Recently, joint military exercises between Korea and Australia were held in Korea and Australia, respectively. Australian soldiers cooperated with the Korean military in Miles training at the Korean training range, and the Korean military practiced amphibious operations in the Australian area. There will be even closer cooperation in the future. Military cooperation projects with Australia have begun in the Army and Navy, and the Air Force will soon cooperate as well. Japan also got help from LM. The F-2 is essentially a derivative of the F-16 with significant differences that increase long range capabilities.
South Korea meanwhile made their own derivative of the F-16 with the help of LM, the T-50 / FA-50. FA-50 is essentially a shortened and simplified F-16 for a lower budget point.
Thus both countries got their own F-16 derivatives, Japan went for higher capabilities and much higher costs while South Korea went for lower capabilities and much lower costs.

    Great contents.
    Here are my 2 cents worth;
    1. The circumstances of Canberra re imminent military threat and intensity of those threats are different from SKorea. Hence the budgetary and socio-political priority is different shown by the size of the standing military.
    2. The video refers ‘such smaller nation’. However, Skorea has larger GDP, double the population and much larger military.
    3. SKorea has the world leading high precision engineering industry ranging from steel mills (world 5th), petrochemical (9th), automotive (5th), semiconductor manufacturing (2nd), display (1st), ship building (2nd by tonnage and 1st by value). The industrial and engineering might of SKorea is different from that of India, Turkey or Australia. Hence KF21 is 67% domestic (basically everything other than engines) whereas if you are to build all these engineering and industrial capabilities, it would be more expensive, will take longer and there is no guarantee it will succeed.
    4. SKorea MoD acquisition program is very different from other countries. The intellectual property rights of any system developed under gov funding is kept by the gov. Hence, the budgetary allocation and development follow strict gov guidelines. This created many gov R&D institutes and brought in the entire academia to support such development using gov R&D funding. SKorean model streamlines and enhances the countries entire R&D efforts into its projects (which in turn leads industry innovation and competitiveness on the global stage).
    5. F2 is largely regarded as a moderate success (otherwise there would have been exports) and FX (Shin Shin) was a catastrophic failure (hence the testing was cut short). There has not been a single sales of Japanese aircrafts on international stage after a concerted efforts from Japanese gov. Whereas T50 and its variants are operational in 9 countries.
It is not clear if Australia has all these.

The Americans initially did not authorize the integration of the AMRAAM and the latest variant of the AIM-9X with the KF-21 because they said such systems are not provided to airframes under development. This is the main reason why Seoul opted for the Meteor and the AIM-2000. Since then the US did an about-face and said it will allow its air-to-air weapons to be used on the jet. Another development is that S. Korea has officially said it will produce its own short-range AAM and an indigenous fighter engine that may be used on the KF-21 and possibly next-generation jet trainer and light attack jet. News reports said the AAM will be similar to the AIM-9X with the engine being on par or slightly more powerful than the GE414 licensed-built in Korea for the KF-21. South Korea has been license-building jet engines for decades so it has the general know-how while a local company even started building huge industrial-grade turbines for thermal power plants that can be used on jet turbofan engines. FYI Seoul operates some 430 combat jets and if you count the jet trainers that can be used in limited air-to-ground and air-to-air roles, the total rises to around 500.

F-35A and KF-21 are not in the same league. The F-35 is bleeding edge! It will do the precision bombing of air defense system and neutralize command and control and maybe sweep the skies of N. Korean fighters, at least in the early stages of a conflict. The KF-21 will do the heavy lifting and mundane tasks of existing fighters once the North air defense system has been degraded. This is important because the F-35 is very expensive to fly. If the Americans are struggling with operational cost think what it would mean for S. Korea and other smaller nations. It makes sense to buy the F-35 but for Seoul, these planes should only be used when it is really needed and for training the pilots. It would be folly to use F-35s as interceptors against antiquated N. Korean MIGs or maintain regular CAPs over Korea particularly in peace time. FYI S. Korea has always maintained some 120 top-of-the-line US fighters with the rest of its fighter fleet being less capable fighters like the F-16C/Ds, F-5E/Fs, and the soon-to-be phased-out F-4E. The KF-21 is eminently suitable for replacing the F-16s, F-5s, and F-4s once they reach the end of their serviceable life. To emphasize the KF-21 does not compete with the F-35 but acts as an affordable backup and I think most air forces around the world need this kind of high-low mix.

It is often overlooked but Boeing (and presumably other foreign companies) has been training Korean companies such as KAI and their engineers in the process and details of designing and producing aircraft. There were many of their people cycled through Boeing in the US and cooperation on the ground in Korea. As many others have already mentioned, the KF-21 project does not place importance on having full stealth. Korea has already purchased a number of F-35s. And even if the KF-21 is successfully developed, it cannot replace the F-35 and was not developed with that intention. In fact, there has been debate about how effective the stealth function will be in Northeast Asia, where radar networks are densely located, and for this reason, the Korean Air Force seems to think that maintaining an air advantage at the risk of some casualties is a more important strategic goal than performing a stealth raid. Of course, this idea is not aimed at North Korea, but at the potential risk of dealing with China or Japan. KF-21 is a aircraft that reflects the requirements that are considered optimal given this strategic situation. For example, the importance of BVR is the latest trend, but KF-21 is designed with a focus on mobility, which is a close combat capability. It is doubtful to explain that this is simply because it was designed as an air superiority aircraft. Of course, some argue that mobility is still important in BVR combat. However, it must be pointed out that the mobility of the KF-21s, which has been disclosed so far, goes far beyond this necessity. And it can be understood from this perspective that the Korean Air Force insisted on choosing a twin-engine aircraft because survival is important. Of course, twin-engine aircraft require much higher costs than single-engine aircraft. Nevertheless, it seems reasonable to assume that Korea, which is sensitive to rising costs, chose this design for reasons. Unfortunately, the KF-21 was built on the assumption of a battlefield in which a desperate struggle was fought, and this assumption was established because it was difficult for Korea to dominate over other countries in Northeast Asia. Naturally, it looks very different from the US war, which begins with a war by driving an aircraft carrier to another country and hitting it from a long distance.

*Facts about KF21 that you may not have known but are not important in everyday life*
    - Some people look at the shape of the KF21 and call it the 5th generation. But this is wrong.
    - KF21 was officially developed targeting the 4.5 generation. Korean Senior domestic officials do not classify KF21 as the 5th generation.
    - The reason is to replace the aging F4 and F5, and their goal is to create a cost-effective fighter aircraft suitable for the Korean security environment rather than taking on difficult challenges.
    - And it is a conservative plan to minimize failure. Rather than developing for the 5th generation from the beginning and failing, it is safer to develop the 4.5th generation first and then upgrade to the 5th generation.
    - Korea introduced the F35 to utilize the 5th generation fighter aircraft.
    - There are no official plans for a 5th generation upgrade yet. However, development is expected to be possible in the 2030s.
    - Currently, there is empty space inside KF21. This space was designed with the 5th generation internal weapons bay in mind.
    - The number of 120 KF21s to be operated by the Korean Air Force has been confirmed.
    - The Korean Air Force plans to order hundreds more KF21s in the future.
    - There are plans for a KF21 naval aircraft carrier version.
    - However, Korea's possession of aircraft carriers is inappropriate for Korea's security environment, so there is no progress in the project.
    - The Korean government plans to develop its own engine comparable to the F414 by the 2030s. Of course it is will be used in the KF21. currently, thay are focusing on drone engine development.
    - Mass production of KF21 began on July 10, 2024.

But it is excellent alternative to US F-16, Franch Rafale, or Russian Su-35 in term of value vs total cost of ownership, just like Hyundai or Kia car. F-16 and other fighter jets are rather old design, expensive maintenance cost, no reduced radar cross section (semi-stealth), no sensor integration, limited range and weapon load, no future upgrade plan, etc. KF-21 was designed to address such shortcomings of F-16 once and for all, yet keeping availability high and the maintenance time and cost as low as F-16, suitable for sortie-eater and work horse fighter jet of world air force.

KF-21 Boramae is the name of a falcon when its young is raised for hunting.

nternational aircraft parts companies are participating in KF-21. Lockheed Martin has been involved since the T-50 advanced trainer. In the KF-21, Korea developed the four core technologies and 29 technologies that were denied approval by the U.S. Congress, and Lockheed Martin only plays an advisory role in the design. So Lockheed Martin is Korea’s official partner company. Joint marketing of the Korean T-50 was conducted for the U.S. Air Force's advanced trainer project, and the KF-21 was also mentioned in an interview with Lockheed Martin's vice president for Asia. Korea already has enough technology. It only takes time to implement the technology. That's why I chose a step-by-step approach.

It's actually very wise of South Korea to move away from dependence on US air assets. They now have a short line of external customers for the plane already, Peru being an completely unexpected windfall. As the US$ and the US government's reputation both decay, other countries are going to want alternatives that are not Soviet or Chinese. So I'd say S. Korea is very much on the ball here.

A case in point is their alliance with BAE systems to develp TFX. Both koreans and turks are at the mercy of west when it comes to defense sale.

Could be an interesting aircraft for smaller European nations provided the KF-21 shows decent capabilities and has relatively low operating costs and purchase price. We in Switzerland have still 30 FA-18s C/D (from initially 34, delivered between 1996-98) and 26 F-5 E/F Tiger II (from initially 110, delivered in the late 70s) in service. These will be replaced by 36 F-35 A between 2027-2030. As per current plans, these will be the only fighter jets left in the Swiss inventory. But why not supplement the F-35 with a light fighter (e.g. 24 KF-21s) to bolster our air defence and take over some roles from the F-35? A plane like the KF-21 could have a niche market in such a role...

    • @technocracy90
      @technocracy90 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

That also is the exact role of KF-21 for the Korean Ariforce. A lot of armchair airforce generals on the internet often forget you need to back up the high capability elite fighters with cheaper, but many fighters. F-15 was backed up by F-16, and in some countries F-16 was by F-5. Even the famous/notorious F-35 was designed to back F-22 up with its inferior-but-cheap^TM capabilities. KF-21 is not to replace nor compete with F-35, but to support them.

I rather get F15 to backup the F35, its proven and just as capable if not more.

    • @technocracy90
      @technocracy90 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@Pepe-dq2ib if you do not consider low observability and a room for more evolution, sure. However, if that's your criteria, you don't even need the F-35 in the first place. F-15 would do everything that F-35 can do in much bigger volume at much lower cost. If you wanna back F-35 up with anything, that means you need stealth or at least low observability, which F-15 is inherently limited and barely has any room to be better. F-15 are a superb option to back F-35 up if you already have them, no doubt, but not a solid choice for those who don't have them yet.

    • @Pepe-dq2ib
      @Pepe-dq2ib 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@technocracy90 KF21 is not a backup for F35 either, you are clearly overrating its stealth and cross section. Kai doesnt have the same paint, a weapons bay or heat deflectors like F-35. The upgrade ability you keep claiming means nothing without a weapons bay and theres no way to add it.

  • @Dumbrarere
    @Dumbrarere 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

KF-21 is essentially a crossbreed between the F-22 and F-35, taking the advantages of both without the disadvantages of either. If it implements Augmented Reality via an HMD, advanced sensors, AESA Radar and the latest in combat information sharing and datalinking, I'd argue that the KF-21 has the capability to become a true bird of prey in the hands of an experienced pilot. Here's hoping that South Korea can make the KF-21 a truly capable air dominance fighter.

F22 & F35 are good to have but too expensive to keep up in the air. KF-21 is likely be the only option for those countries that can't get F35 or can't afford for decades.

Incredible. South Korea is incredible as a country and a culture. I knew they were selling millions of cars, manufacturing everything from railway locomotives to their own battle rifles, to billions of smart phones - but, combat aircraft? They're amazing. Sure glad the South Koreans are on our side.
I'm in California but I used to work for some Koreans. One of them had been in the ROK army. He told me the training included your platoon gets marched onto a frozen pond to kick holes in the ice. Then everybody just jumps in the freezing water up to their necks to walk around in it for a minute. Like I said, incredible.
