On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

Canards are just another control surfaces, it's not inherently unstealthy
The designers just have to align it to the rest of the surface, so that the radar waves are reflected into the same direction, ie away from the enemy
And as far as I can see, the J-20 canards ARE edge aligned with the rest of the surface, which means it's indeed a stealthy design

@@abes3925 As much as I see that line parroted, I really think that's a misunderstanding of the ATF program acquisition. Despite how much people suck off the YF-23, the F-22 was a superior place at the time of the competition. It's engines were more refined (as much as I like GE, the YF120 was just not a very good engine at the time and it would've hampered readiness and cost), the design as a whole was much more mature (meaning less time till it entered service), capable of carrying more missiles, a superior dogfighter, etc.
There's also the fact that Northrop at the time was having issues with the B-2 program at the time being behind schedule and over budget (yes yes, I know about the struggles with the F-35 program but this was the 90's. Also Northrop wasn't trying to design an aircraft for 3 branches who don't like cooperating on designs). The proposal that Lockheed put forward was more mature and was likely to enter service sooner and cheaper than the YF-23. Military acquisition isn't always about getting the best thing possible, it's about the best thing possible for a cost that congress/the public will accept. Would the YF-23 have ended up a better aircraft? Possibly. Does that mean the F-22 wasn't the right choice? Not necessarily.
TL;DR: Defense acquisition is more complicated than teenagers and casuals on the internet would like to think. Was there lobbying by LM? Almost certainly. Does that mean it was the reason the F-22 was selected? doubtful. Especially since Northrop almost certainly was lobbying as well.

8:20 was one of the best visuals I've seen come out of a sim. Well done Growling, well done indeed. One thing to talk about concerning the J-20 and flying stealth reliant profiles in general, is the importance of the frontal area/cross section of the jet. It's why they copied the front view, looking at the Raptor from head on, the J-20 copied the entire area forward of the wing root, inlets, sculpted the nose as an exact copy, etc. Like how the Russians copied the B-29 to make the TU-4, kind of copying. Why? They knew it was the most important part of stealth operations, penetrating the airspace, nose hot on the target area. It's why the Raptor drivers are some of the most intelligent and calm pilots in the cadre. They use small inputs and measured maneuvering, so that they are presenting that tiny frontal radar signature profile, to the sensors ahead. No quick aileron rolls, rapid pitch ups, or even coordinated turns. Slips and slides, while threading the threat needle through the threat envelopes of the weapon systems that are radiating or known via datalink and just "listening" so to speak. The jet was tuned in the BAF, at Edwards and all of it's sensors and systems for penetration, concentrated on maintaining that frontal profile being maintained as long as possible to the threat/s. Violent maneuvering while relying on stealth not to be detected/locked... isn't how Raptor was intended to be operated. That capability, what you showed at 8:20 is for when you have visual/busted by bad guys. A black hole in the radar spectrum only works if you keep the shiny side up as much as possible, especially since the RWR and other seriously important sensors are positioned along the lateral line of the jet, as you well know. Keep up the great work buddy!

Based on some recent footage from this year's Zhuhai airshow, the J20 seems actually has decent dogfighting potential. Especially now that its engine has been switched from Russian products to domestically-made ones, its maneuverability has improved significantly compared to previous years. In addition to "basic" maneuvers like cobra or falling leaf, it can even roll continuously off the speed vector at high AOA while still maintaining climb - a maneuver I haven't seen any other aircraft do. Maybe the F16 has done it, but at a much smaller AOA.
On the other hand, though, it still has not had TVC, nor does it have a gun. Both of these should be a problem for extreme dogfighting scenarios.

And I have check all the Zhuhai footage from TH-cam I can find. Could not see any that has Cobra, Falling leaf as you describe. As for your description of "High AOA roll". From what I have heard, the J-20 isn't so much a close in knife fighter like the F-22 or SU-57 and more a long range missile truck, being the biggest and most bulky of the 5th gen fighters. I remember an annalist discussing how the canards do reduce stealth but that it is unlikely that either the J-20 or SU-57 are as close to the F-22 or F-35 based on certain design features. The compromise in stealth isn't as important due to the good but not great stealth in the first place. The J-20 though appears to have a very good radar allowing it to lock target from very far away which pairs well with the new long range missile the J-20 has been seen to carry. This leads to the conclusion that while not as good as the F-22, the J-20 wasn't designed to directly fight it in the first place. Instead it was supposed to kick the pants off of the more common F-15, F-16 and F-18 planes the USAF has from long distance with lots of 120+km range missiles where its stealth is good enough make it nearly untouchable, and have the speed and high-speed maneuverability to get out of any fight it is loosing.
