    I loved how you kept looking to the 600's. Got a genuine laugh out of me. And yes, these are absolutely feasible for use outdoors, I've done that successfully for a while.

    Just got these, damn i had no idea music can sound like that. And the bass is just perfect, it's very much there, but not over the top.

    • @Vveljac
      @Vveljac 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      CockatooDude Yea, FIIO e10k, i like it. The bass boost on the FIIO is slightly over exaggerated but that works awesome with the HD598 which by nature have a slightly lower bass.

      @CockatooDude 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dark-EyedTraveler If you ever want to push them further, the e09k and e07k together are a really good upgrade. But at least you aren't plugging it into the headphone jack, so kudos on that.

      CockatooDude Indeed i will be upgrading at some point. Either way the cans are awesome. Easy to maintain as well, only downside is the special headphone jack it needs..

    These headphones are great for music and gaming and movies. Light on bass, but that's fine if you don't care for much bass. Responds decently to amplification. I love the looks.
    I had these for years and they finally kicked the bucket. Replacing them with HD650s. But for the price, these might be the best headphones in their range.

    I still love how you keep looking over at the HD600's. lol The more I see these headphones, the more the color scheme grows on me. I have two noctua nf-f12's hidden away in the top of my black/red PC case since the colors don't fit well with the black/red internals. But the whole cream/coffee look they have going with the burl wood accents makes them look more premium than they are, in my opinion. I am going to track these down and give them a try at the very least.

    Ive used them for 5 years, absolute lack of lower end has bothered me for way too long. You can eq some bass with APO, reduced the peak by 7db and added 8-9db to lower end to hear some wubs. Music tastes change. So if you listen do edm, bass heavy trance or something simmilar choose something else.

    I had the HD 555's for abouy five years and I believe they are 90% the same as these. Very good headphones, a little bass light but it's ok. Superior comfort to anything I've tried. Good for gaming, way better than my current ATH-M50X. The only downside with this 598 and the 555 is the construction. These will break eventually, they will crack just above the can where they attach to the headband, I can guarantee it. I'm looking to get the HD 600 next.

    • @gezasereny6126
      @gezasereny6126 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the hd555 for 15 years now, no cracks. The construction is pretty much the same in most Sennheisers, well-tested and proven. It's German.

    Awesome channel Z, your videos are the funniest! And I think you're the first on youtube with actual sound demos of headphones.. They seem quite accurate too, although it's hard to say, but I think you can find out about the sound signature if you use a neutral enough headphone. I've listened to a bunch of them deep into last night (lol), to help me decide on which headphones I wanna get.
    These 598s were actually among the ones I liked (not immediately, but after giving it a little time), so I went to try them out in a shop today and they impressed me enough there as well so I already bought them. I've owned the 650 and 600 before, the 598 has certainly a more exciting sound to them. I'd say these sound more like an actual headphone while the 600 and 650 sound maybe more like speakers. The only slight problem is that they don't seem to fit too well on my head, they're very light but are a bit loose as mentioned in the video, and they have some weird dimensions. But so far, a VERY good sounding headphone!

    I bought a HD 598 SR and the box was much different from this. It was cardboard but well made with sponge inside and headphone were fixed inside the sponge in cut out area. The packing looked pretty high end. Both cables the longer one without mic and the smaller one with mic were in the box. I think SR edition is better packed. But on the filpside its black color only and not white and maroon.

    I believe that short cable wasn't supplied with 598's, my guess is that it was taken from the box of 600's of 650's, which are lying on the left side. At least when I got my 598's (and those were genuine ones, I've ran the authenticity check at Sennheiser website) the only cable I got was the 3 meter one.

    Hi, im new in audiophile world and i bought this a few months ago, after gathering information and searching a lot for a pair of headphones, and im very glad i got them. The thing is that after watching some of your reviews, im considering of buying a second pair of headphones, and that ones will be the Sennheiser HD 600, unless you a second opinnion about HD 600. Mostly i use them for watching movies, liten music (lately: two steps from hell, audiomachine, immediate music, that music gender), and gaming if got the time. Another thing, what dac or amp do you recomend for this headphones? Most of the time i do this things on the pc. Pretty much everything. Thanks

    I think maybe a modified Superlux cable system would work on the Sennheiser 5xx series. Keep the shitbomb 2.5mm twist end plugged in permanently - it will be secure with the lock. Then cut off at 4-6 inches or whatever and attach a 3.5mm female. What do you think? I mean, buying a shorter replacement on eBay would be easier, but what's the fun in that?

    Hi Z...
    I was wondering if you ever had a chance to try the HD599 and compare them to HD598. I read in some Amazon reviews that their sound signature is actually different. Which I... sort of doubt...

  • @lokdabest
    @lokdabest 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    They have the same drivers as the HD 558 and a replacement driver can be bought at 25 dollars, i know this, because i have the HD 558 for a while now and BOTH drivers broke eventually, they started to give a cracking noise on basses.
    One time the wire inside the frame broke and i had to open the frame and it is just a cheap piece of plastic.
    they sound good and are great for playing shooters, but i would not recommend these at all, because if you pay around 50 dollars on the actuall speakers, where goes the rest of 100 dollar of value?
    ps: the replacement parts were official sennheiser parts, even coming in a sealed, sennheiser branded plastic bag and they sound exactly the same.

  • @djscott9207
    @djscott9207 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure if anyone has mentioned it: for low impedance use, these are probably the most accurate sound you can buy (Low impedance meaning: plug them directly into a portable consumer source, such as an iPod, portable CD player, or iPhone). Having 50 ohms of impedance, they need to be matched with a source that is LESS than or equal to that. These are considered low impedance compared to higher priced headphones, such as the HD600 series that are 300 ohms or more. These will NOT sound accurate if connected to a preamp, amplifier, or any output source with an impedance >50 ohms, so don't do it. The magic happens when these are connected directly to your smartphone or computer motherboard or any quality low impedance output of

    • @ZReviews

      +Sage Cartwright The 600's likely need an amp to work best. Without an amp the Fidelio X2's [amzn.to/1OUxc4Q] are pretty efficient and some of my favorites. The 400S are also much more efficient.

    Can anyone help? Choosing between HD599 and Beyerdynamic DT880, will consider other suggestions. Not sure about sound, probably something like m40x but open-back with good soundstage. Don't really care about bass, but do want clarity and detail, with good separation between instruments. I listen to a wide variety of genres, mostly blues rock and other rock genres, symphonic music, other instrumental stuff

    Just bought the black 598 special edition at the last minute on Amazon's Black Friday deal. This is my first "audiophile" headphone, upgrading from the Astro A40 + MixAmp Pro. I'm guessing I'm in for a treat? :)

      +MiddleEasternGuy well?

    • @MiddleEasternGuy
      @MiddleEasternGuy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dragaan Absolutely loved them. Though about a month after buying them, the Philips Fidelio X2 went on sale and that's the pair I originally wanted to upgrade to. I returned the 598SE and got those instead.

    • @intuit13
      @intuit13 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MiddleEasternGuy Crap, I was considering those, too... So which are better? And by how much? Are you still using an amp with them?
      I just bought the AKG Q701's and an Audioengine D1 DAC/Amp and I am returning both. The amp is decent, and makes my 32 ohm old astro a30's loud, but these Q701's are extremely low volume, even though they're "supposedly" 62 ohms. It's barely above average volume with the Amp cranked up to max. Very disappointed, as I REALLY wanted to l ike these phones, but this setup cost almost 400 bucks and this is in no way worth that...

    • @MiddleEasternGuy
      @MiddleEasternGuy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dragaan I'm no audiophile, but the low end on the X2 is noticeably better compared to the 598. The sound of the X2 is overall more warm and can be considered to be more "fun". You can't go wrong with either though. One area the 598 beats the X2 is comfort.
      I still use my MixAmp Pro. I can't find seem to find an amp that has both optical out AND supports Dolby Digital virtual surround sound (for use on a game console).

    • @intuit13
      @intuit13 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MiddleEasternGuy Thanks for the responses. Still can't decide... I'm not a super basshead, but I did find the lows lacking in the 2 higher end headsets I've tried so far. That's in music, though. in gaming I actually don't like super loud bass. Anyway, I also have a astro mixamp (the a30 version, which might be the same one) and I know it's only 16bit/48k as opposed to 24/96 or 24/192 like almost all other $50+ DACs are nowadays. My Asus z170 motherboard's integrated sound is even 24/192. Not sure how much of a diff it makes unless you're listening to the highest-quality soundfiles, but keep that in mind.

      hell, the 558 measures almost identically to the 598 anyway graphs.headphone.com/graphCompare.php?graphType=0&graphID[]=2851&graphID[]=2861&scale=30 and the general consensus is the foam mod affacts the soundstage more than anything

      chakku dasai That's utter bullshit. I wish people could stop spreading that nonsense around, it's so annoying. I've owned both headphones, and in no way does modding the HD558's make them sound like 598's, in fact, it takes them even further from sounding like 598's.

    • @chakku
      @chakku 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      derbigpr500 this isn't head-fi. can you actually prove they sound nothing like each other with some evidence because frequency response (aside from a little variation), identical drivers and shells say otherwise.

  • @PlayItLikeABoss
    @PlayItLikeABoss 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Color-wise i think these look good. The same color scheme really doesn't look as good on the Noctua fans. But what I don't get is why everyone keep saying these are well-built. They are def not, especially for the price. The padding on the headband is not even wrapped, but instead they just used a double-sided tape to keep it on there. The edge of the tape on mine tore off a bit after about 10 uses, which is very unacceptable for a Sennheiser product imo. They sound good and are very comfortable however.

    • @freezak3864
      @freezak3864 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to disagree. Mine are 5 years old now, and while indeed they are plasticky and they don't feel well-built, they in fact are. Pads needed changing, headband tore in the middle so that part had to be changed too but other than that they are going strong and looking at the comments of many other headphones where users are reporting they break in half or in any other part after only about 1-3 years, i am in fact lucky to have bought this specific model, it's gonna last me another 5 years no problem. One more note: if you hear a bass rattle noise, most likely some dirt/hair went inside your driver, you have to disassembly your earpads and driver cover and clean it inside, search for "hd598 bass rattle fix" on google.

    Can you compare AD 700X in terms of separation to this, or yours AD 500X If you have not heard 700X ?

    • @ZReviews
      @ZReviews  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      lazar1992vb Not heard the 700. Presuming the 500 and 700 are similar in that aspect I think separation is very close. The AD line has slightly more pronounced highs with can make the soundstage appear larger and why I messed my pants when gaming in the 2000x's.

    Man, I have a serious question and i really hope you can help me.
    I got these headphones just today, and they sounded great when I was using them on my trashy soundcard, but when i pluged them into my focusrite scarlett 8i6 audio interface, sound got.... well in my opinion bad.
    Bass got a tiny bit tighter but its weaker too, while highs sound harsher, like it's even a bit tiring on my ears....
    Do you happen to know what I might be doing wrong?
    Please help me man.
    Thank you.

      The Recording interfaces don't have very good headphone amps. Use your onboard and consider a dedicated dac/amp for just your headphones.

    I've never heard the HD558 or the HD598. About 1.5 years ago I wanted to buy the 598, but i got the HD600 instead. After watching this video i think i've made the right choice :D

    • @thoyo
      @thoyo 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      seeing as how the HD600 is your profile pic, you must adore them. may I ask what dac/amp you use to power them? I've been thinking of getting a tube

    • @theodoro89
      @theodoro89 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thoyo Yeah, i do adore them. To be fair i don't own something better/more-expensive, but i believe they sound awesome. I use the O2 and ODAC. The ODAC has a DIY Salas PSU, but i didn't build it myself. I've never had any other good dac or amp so i can't comment on that. However many people suggest the bottlehead crack, O2 and most schiit amps.

    • @thoyo
      @thoyo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      thx a lot for the info!! i'm really thinking about getting the HD600. do you use .flac audio files? I hear they really bring out the most in audiophile grade phones

    • @theodoro89
      @theodoro89 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      thoyo Don't get too deep with all these stuff (24bit, FLAC, 196khz etc...) Good recordings with good headphones makes 80% of the difference. The other 15% is the DAC & amp and the rest of the 5% is everything else.
      Blind test a mp3 and a FLAC file and decide for yourself if you are willing to have a 5 to 10 times bigger audio file. Personally i can pick up some flaws with the mp3 compared to the Flac file, but only with my DAC, my HD600 and with critical listening and only for some albums. Most mp3 and flac sounds excactly the same to me and they are equally enjoyable with the HD600 even with no amp or DAC, which btw you don't need IMO. When i first got my amp i couldn't find any difference in the sound, but after a year i can feel something's missing when i'm not using it. In my opinion you'll never understand why you want an amp until you use one for many many hours. Same can be said for the DAC (Even though i noticed the difference immediately. Maybe my on-board DAC was bad/just-ok)

    • @thoyo
      @thoyo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks! i'm really new to the audiophile world, but i've found that it's a really welcoming community. hopefully, soon I'll have enough knowledge where I can help another neophyte along on their journey :)

    At the time, I thought I was getting a bargain at getting them for $99 during Amazon's Prime sale...and when i got them, I felt like I was cheated. They are bass light...under certain genres of music...but sometimes, they surprise you. Very crisp and clear while listening to jazz (smooth or other). $99 or less is what I would recommend for these.

    This is absolutely the best headphones under 200. However I'm interested to know if the HD700 would be a great upgrade or just too much money for a small difference. Atm I use my onboard soundcard. I have a Titanium HD but doesn't work with W8.1 so waiting for W10.
