Locals carrying machetes, shoplifting and homelessness plague 'best place to live in England'

  • IT was only last summer that Plymouth was named 'the best place to live in England'.
But locals say the historic maritime city is now plagued by mobs of destructive kids as young as 11, shoplifters, and drug users openly dealing on the streets and "shooting up" in shops.
Business owners have complained about a rise in people stealing and abuse towards staff, windows being smashed, and young gangs trying to break into buildings through skylights.
On the morning The Sun visited we were met by boarded-up shopfronts and walls of graffiti, groups of arguing youths and drunks zig-zagging up the street clutching cans of booze.
Pete Monsgrove, 53, is Plymouth-born and bred and said crime has noticeably increased in the past few years.
“The way things are going are bad," he told us. "I saw a guy, someone I recognised, and he was carrying a machete round town.
"I was like, ‘What are you doing?' and he said, ‘It’s for my protection’.
“This not a huge city with major crime, it’s just a small town, but it has its problems. There are a lot of homeless people now.
“The council are investing millions on one end of town and nothing at the other end. Look around you - it’s a ghost town."
He added that the opening of Drake Circus, a large glass-fronted shopping centre completed in 2006, has had a knock-on effect on the high street.
“This used to a be thriving town, but since they built that hideous mall, the town is dead.
"It’s full of charity shops, the businesses left are struggling.”
Statistics from 2022 show Plymouth is now the most dangerous city in Devon, putting the crime rate at 64 per 1,000 people - 40 per cent higher than the county’s average.
On an evening in January a gang of up to 60 youths rampaged through the town terrorising businesses, smashing windows, climbing onto rooftops and hurling things down into the street.
Three police cars were reportedly smashed up and the police later made more than 10 arrests.
It prompted businesses to call for action. At a recent meeting between police, the city council, Plymouth Against Retail Crime (Parc) and Crimestoppers UK, the chief executive of Plymouth City Centre Company, Steve Hughes, declared: “We can't tolerate this any more.”
"They were throwing things, being abusive and running into shops," Steve told The Sun.
“We’ve got a lot of low rooftops in Plymouth and they were throwing things down into the street. When the police were called, they had no respect for the law. Some of these kids were only 11."
He added: “All city centres have crime, but it’s escalated here. The cost-of-living crisis means there are more homeless people living on the streets.
"We've got people with mental health issues, people with drug addiction and alcohol problems. Shoplifting is at an all-time high.
“On top of that, in the last year or so, we have an awful lot of antisocial behaviour from very young people. We are lucky in that we are a resilient community.”
Businesswoman Lesley Park, 63, who owns a string of franchises of the pasty store Oggy Oggy, told The Sun: “I’ve had people outside the shop causing a disturbance, fighting outside the shop, arguments over drugs.
"I see drug deals openly taking place on the street outside and it’s a huge problem.
“The back area of our shop has been smashed into and we had someone break in by climbing through the toilet window to try and get cash, so we’ve had to install reinforced shutters.

Its intentional scarcity and demand keeps rising as children grow up, more migrants come to work, monies people buy holiday homes to put on air bnb and older people live longer. Therefore prices have never stopped increasing.

What people are waiting for is Nigel farage as he Is about to join the conservative party maybe just after the election. This election is lost to starmer but the next one we are waiting for is Nigel in blue. This seems our only hope. That 15 million a day rips my heart seeing that amount money spent on people that actually want this country to become Muslim. Just imagine what that could do for towns or schools or anything but spending it on illegals.

It's a blight on the town centres and seafront in many traditional British seaside towns, where they tend to use expensive seafront hotels to house those coming here illegally, indefinitely....⚠️😲😳

Of course it's deliberate. The Barcelona treaty from 2002 will give you a bit of a clue. It was playing out well before then, but it will give you a bit of an understanding. It is 100% deliberate and forced across Europe.
I'm not too familiar with the USA & Canada, but my understanding is that there is something similar happening there too.
In a nutshell, it's to keep the status quo of the elites and rulers. Keep the low low, give them distractions, hatred towards one another, moaning at the state of this or that , creating racial divide, reinforcing it in the press, creating silly diversions like sexuality, political correctness etc. Yes, it's all pre planned , if you dig deep enough you will find videos from late 70's , early 80's predicting all of this, eerily uncannily accurate.

The problem is that it is not just Plymouth… it’s almost all of our seaside towns. Even the big name well known ones that we thought 20+ years ago would be well kept holiday destinations by the sea forever are now hollowed shells. Soon if you want a British seaside holiday you won’t be able to for fear of attack injury or illness and if you live in a seaside town what once was a desirable home will be worth next to nothing. The government and local authorities need to come out of the cities and look at what they have done to our seaside towns… they had the opportunity to look after them and fumbled it so badly it’s now undesirable to live in a seaside town.

@@CelticSaint OK, so Plymouth has become less white, and more like the general UK population in the last 10-15 years, but as this film makes clear the down and outs, are predominately white. What I'm saying is that the reaction to people reading the title of this film 'Locals carrying machetes, shoplifting and homelessness...' are assuming that it is foreigners that are being referred to, but it's not. They really mean 'locals'.
What made me comment in the first place is that the comments I was reading are totally missing the point. The problem in Plymouth isn't immigrants. The people with problems aren't immigrants. And the reason the people shown in this film have problems - mental health issues, drug addictions, homelessness etc, aren't because of immigrants (I know this is the argument that many commentators here will naturally respond with). The problems highlighted in this film are because of 14 years of Tory government and austerity that has destroyed the things that used to support these people so that they didn't end up in such a desperate situation.
I know that's not a fashionable argument on the internet - look at the comments here - but watching the film makes it abundantly clear to me that this is what has happened.

    • @CelticSaint
      @CelticSaint 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@tetsbristolI do agree with you actually. Definitely in Plymouth the majority of problems are down to either locals (Plymothians) or, and this is increasingly an issue in Devon and Cornwall, people who have been moved down here in to hostels who have drug problems and/or have committed sexual crimes against children. A plethora of such hostels have sprung up in the last 10 years. I live in a small market town and we now have a large group of people who hang around outside the local church who are always being done for theft, public drunkenness, drug dealing and general anti-social behaviour issues.

I listened to the music, wore the baggy clothes and used some of the slang that was in at the time, but I didn't live the lifestyle. Worst thing I ever did was go down to a local park while there was a cricket match going on and threw some of the cones they'd set up for the temporary car park into the river. That's the difference between teens back then and the teens of today. Today's teens more often than not do live the lifestyle.

AMERICAN HOOLIGAN- DEREK "Del Boy" DIABLO of MIAMI CASUALS here, hello all. I for one LOVE PLYMOUTH, returning soon, lived there for most of 6 months in 2019, was back for a month in 2022, then was over for a week last year. I haven't personally seen the sort of deterioration being presented and discussed here as being so drastically different. Everyone is entitled to call it as they see it so not trying to discredit anyone, its just I have a VERY different perspective.
I've been lots of places in UK including London, Brighton, Portsmouth, Isle of Wight, Jersey, Torquay, Cardiff, Caerphilly, Barry, other places... And while I can tell all of you quite emphatically that I LOVE ALL OF GREAT BRITAIN, my Heart is in Plymouth.
The JANNERS are great People, the best. I love Plymouthians and the mighty GREEN ARMY, up the PLYMOUTH ARGYLE, Respect to THE CENTRAL ELEMENT/TCE Firm, the A38's, EFFORD BOOT BOYS, SWILLY BOYS, STONEHOUSE BOYS, UNDER 5's, BABY RISK, BABY WACE. 💚💚🖤🖤💚💚
Things may be bad right now for all of you and I empathize, however its not as bleak as it may seem, always remember that Great Britain is a SPECIAL place, greatest CULTURE in the World, so much has come from England, UK, you are a special People though there is a nasty side to all of it, one not presented in America where the perception is that UK is posh. I know the other Side of it, the dark side, I'm part of that actually or rather an older expression of said ANTI-SOCIAL tendencies in society being PUNK, SKINHEADS, BOOT BOYS, FOOTBALL HOOLIGANS, CASUALS...
I'm not going to meddle in your National or Local Politics, I can only offer my Country as a point of reference, and I've been all over America. The "rot" that all of you are on about isn't just Plymouth, UK, its all over the Western World but not every single place.
While other major American cities are in a similar state of decay and in a downward spiral, MIAMI and my State of FLORIDA are better than ever before in my 50 years of living here. Thing is yeah, my CUBAN PEOPLE came here when Castro took over and TOOK OVER. The existing White and Black People were against Us but we took Miami over and spread all over Florida. No one has the RIGHT to do do so but its what we done. So then a MASSIVE SURGE IN IMMIGRATION and demographic change resulted in a thriving, continually improving and growing City, State...
So it isn't simply a matter of immigration, its the shared culture and values or lack thereof that come into play with the specfic group or groups that come. I have no advice for any of you other than become involved in local Politics and work towards dealing with things as they are and not how they once were.
Above all, keep Faith, things can and will improve but not overnight. Our major American cities didn't get to where they are today all of the sudden, its years of policies enacted and their eventual effects.
Florida gets a bad rap from many out there but what our Politicians have done has WORKED. Not sure what you can take from that but if Plymouth and other UK Cities copied Florida and Miami things will improve.
Lastly, Plymouth is a beautiful place but there are serious Bad Energies there, lots of Violence, Fighting, Street Brawls involving Navy, other Military, lots of different factions and individual nutters, it can be quite dangerous, but that's all part of the charm isn't it?
... all of you are talking about a decline and hearkening to yesteryear, well may I suggest you take an interest in BRITISH FOOTBALL HOOLIGANISM, TERRACE CULTURE, and the CASUALS Scene? Love it or hate it, these are UNIQUELY BRITISH STREET CULTURES.
You want your Country back? Bring back the FOOTBALL HOOLIGAN!
    - this has been a Public Service Announcement from DIABLO TV, coming soon to a British City near you!!!
    THE END?

Some people are making a lot of money and living a life of luxury from the heroin and crack addicts while the vast majority of decent people are living a quality of life far less than 20 years ago. It's very clear who the police need to go after and if they don't do so then the bosses and the politicians need to leave office. These people are employed by us and need to start behaving as such. We wouldn't tolerate poor customer service in Starbucks or McDonalds yet we tolerate a shoddy performance from those we pay our hard-earned taxes to.

I think a big problem in the Country is that for a lot of people owning a home/having paid it off, is something unachievable these days unless you inherit either money or the property. People are expected to work 9-5, whilst being too tired to live a normal life, save every penny just to be able to work 9-5. There's very little motivation for the lower class to actually work because sadly there's nothing there for them anymore. Then kids see drug dealers with nice cars, designer clothes etc and that life appeals to them far more than working 9-5 5 days a week to remain poor.

@@marcp3788The 70s were poor, constant strikes bodies and rubbish piling up ,constant blackouts with the electric going off , no central heating, my Family had new cardboard in their shoes every week. I was Born in London , outside toilet and a visit to the local Bath house once a week. The 80s were bloody brilliant in comparison to now we were Free .
