I've got one of those! Years ago a neighbor died and the family hired an estate coordinator, or whatever you call the person who organizes selling the person's stuff. The old fellow was a retired airline mechanic that got his chops in the Air Force. He had 2 tool boxes. A Stanley mechanics box and one of those Kennedy machinists boxes. Both chock full of tools! And I got both of them. Drained my entire cash reserve but TOTALLY worth it!
The Kennedy tool box was a nice find and a wonderful restoration. A couple of items that could be useful: Paint: Kennedy sells spray paint which costs an arm and a leg. Rustoleum has a paint that is a shade darker, but very close: Rust-Oleum Stops Rust MultiColor Autumn Brown Textured Spray Paint - Model Number 223523 Drawer Liner Material: Home Depot sells a black drawer liner that will protect tools for the person who is willing to live without the felt. Husky (Home Depot) Drawer Liners SKU 1000053594 18" x 100" Black. Bottom Addition To Protect Removable Lid: On the bottom of the tool box are two “runners” that go from the front to the back. These runners keep the lid in position. The problem is that these runners can wear through the paint of the drawer. I put self-stick felt on the runners which prevents the wearing of the lid paint on the inside. Side Handles: The 20 inch tool box does not have side handles like the 26 inch wide box. The side handles make it easier to move the box instead on the single top handle. To fasten to the tool box, use a bigger head screw as a Slotted Truss Head screw. I bought a used Sears “Kennedy” tool box. Found out why the Sears sold for less than Kennedy - none of the small drawers had the same depth so I had to cut each liner separately. Nothing wrong with Sears box - still works fine but the Kennedy uses thicker metal and is more uniform.
You did a great job bringing that Kennedy tool box back to being useful!! The old American tool boxes were the best… my favorite is my grandfather’s who built his own during World War Two. He worked at the Newport News Shipyard. He worked on the “Juneau” where the 5 Sullivan brothers died as well as “Sullivan Brothers” replacement ship. I still use the tool box and his tools as well as my dad’s tools. I feel nothing available now can touch it. Thanks for sharing your videos with us!!!
Happy birthday to all the Marines and an early Happy Veterans day to all who served. What a great find. I have never seen stock dipped like that. makes me think it is something special. I agree those Kennedy boxes are generally a class above.
Nice cleanup! Hope you feel better. Happy Veterans Day. Look for some place locally that gives free meals to Vets and go and have one. Every Veteran’s day I go Perkins near me and get a breakfast.
That Kennedy is a fantastic find! I had one for years, same model, wish I had it back today. I got mine from a young machinist that got in a bit of trouble and needed a fast ride to the airport! Traded it to me for a hundred mile round trip in 1975. It was full of Starrett tools and full set of Craftsman sockets and ratchets. Still own all the tools today.
I have wanted a Kennedy since I was a teenager. They are either too expensive or too wiped out! I suffer through owning a few Snap On boxes. Free? You can't beat that! Looks nice enough now!
As an Army Veteran I would like to wish you a great Veterans Day for tomorrow, ScoutCrafter. Thank you for participating in our liberty. Apparently, Kennedy set the standard for tool boxes. I have two of the 520s and one sits on a Kennedy rolling cart that has an open front and two drawers on top of that. Couldn't find a number for it. All will close up and lock with a key. I'm very happy to have them. As you know, your new find is in decent shape and will last for year to come. I hope you recover from your cold soon. Thanks for a great show as usual.
I have a few Kennedy boxes that I picked up years ago(40 ish) with many tools in them(those days are gone unfortunately!)I really like the old Gerstners and I'm fortunate to have a large original one in very good condition . Love your videos, Keep up the great work and Thanks!
My uncles both had Kennedy carpenters tool boxes. In the 1960s they would load their boxes on the back of the Ford rack body truck along with any other tools they thought they would need and go off to the job. At the end of the day they would back up to my grandparents’ barn and unload. In 1971 they decided thet could buy a second truck for the business and bought a van. After that most of their tools stayed in the van and the rack body was used for errands.
Great video 👍 That Poor Man’s Flea Market is Gold 🟨! What a awesome find 👍. What a terrific idea 💡 with the sheet metal cookie 🍪 tin to protect the toolbox 🧰 from damage from the wire wheel. I also like the idea of using those Dollar store carpet for the relining of the box if needed for the tool drawer. It was pretty good to see the leather handle was in good condition. I seen some that were missing or some were all to pieces or dried out and deteriorated. I think you did a fantastic job putting that vintage Kennedy toolbox 🧰 back Into Service👍. Cornwell Tools now owns Kennedy tool box company. Cornwell is still letting them build them the same way and in the USA 🇺🇸 , which is a good thing. Great shot of Old Glory 🇺🇸 flying in the breeze in that beautiful night sky. Well again great video and can’t wait to see what you do on Monday. Have a fantastic weekend. 😃👍👍
I also have a Kennedy 520. I've had it since July, 1975. Standard issue for a new R&D engineer at HP back then. Works as well today as it did 48 years ago. Still holds many of the same tools. Could never bear to leave it behind. A battleship of a toolbox.
Happy Birthday today to the USMC and all Marines! 🪖 Great clean up of the Kennedy machinist's chest. Those things can last several careers if not abused. I hope you're feeling better soon!
Have you seen the new TH-cam channel The Knife Doctor? He just did a USMC video for 11/10 and I thought of some other Marines here. He gets old knives to clean up. Hope you feel better, nice finds take care
Your show is the anthesis of a throw-away society. There is something about saving, salvaging and rebuilding that just feels righteous. I find the older I get, the more I realize it. I am reminded of my parents and grandparents who lived by a similar moral compass.
John, I'm in the process of cleaning up my grandfather's 520, and I want to thank you for the very helpful tips. Thank you for your service! Additionally, as a fellow former scout and scoutmaster, I really enjoy and appreciate your shout outs to that great organization. Enjoy your weekend.
My dad was a machinist. The bottom cabinet is a Kennedy and his top chest is something else but is wooden. Great show today John. Thank You for sharing. Have a great weekend.
I had 6 of them and a craftsman. One of them was brand new. They are a well made tool boxes.i sold all of them in my down sizing. I might of some hardware for them . Your box was a very nice find. Your cleanup was good to make it useable. Great find. Thank You
I recently purchased a later model 520 at a swap meet for $30, cleaned it and replaced the aftermarket hack-job lock that was missing the key with a Kennedy tubular lock. I do have another Red Kennedy roll cab and top chest that I use as an overflow box.
That was a great find. I have 5 Kennedy tool boxes but I had to pay for them. :) I enjoyed the stainless steel backing tip and also that parts are available from Kennedy is pretty amazing. I'll be looking into that. Thanks.
You amaze me with your resourcefulness, how, with a little ingenuity and a lot of elbow grease, you can turn another person's discard into a valued tool that any tool lover would enjoy. What a talent. By the way, Happy Veterans Day and thank you for your service!
🇺🇸🇺🇲🇺🇸Nice find! I just bought one of those for $100 that was in worse condition, but didn't buy it so much for the toolbox, but for what was inside. Love the adventures of buying some old timers toolbox and going through all the bits, and bobs. Happy Veterans Day! 🇺🇸🇺🇲🇺🇸
Great find, great cleanup! I think those strange-looking bits are for glass/ceramic. Good thing they wax-coated the aluminum bar, now you don't have to worry about it rusting up on you...
I love the Kennedy machinist toolboxes. I have one which looks like yours, but I think is older. I have same number/style of drawers. The lid has a couple of horizontal folded bars I think for strength. No label, just the name "Kennedy" painted in cursive. It was well taken care of over the decades, no rust, just worn out felt in places. My drawer slides do not have the spring pieces of metal you showed. Mine was a Craigslist find before covid. It was the sellers grandfather who had been a machinist. The sad and common story of the grandfathers house and contents being sold after he passed. I also have a Remline machinist toolbox. Nice but not as nice as the Kennedy. My most recent machinist toolbox is a wooden Gerstner. Not as practical as the metal ones, but I do love the look of the wooden machinist toolbox. Your poor-mans flea market toolbox is a VERY good find. Glad this was rescued from the garbage. Cleaned up well. Dave.
Terrific find John! I have a 520 and love it. This Army veteran and son of a WWII combat veteran wishes you and all other Marines a great veterans day! Bill.
A person could restock their vendor space at the flea market just by driving the streets of New York, especially in your neighborhood. The Kennedy tool boxes are often priced low, not sure why and when they are I’ll buy one. The last one was eight dollars and I couldn’t get to the register fast enough. Ex PO2 here hoping you have a wonderful Veterans Day, Semper Fi
Hope you're feeling better--some rest and fluids. Amazing find in the poor man's flea market. What kind of maniac throws away a Kennedy tool chest? Nice job cleaning it up also. Happy Veterans Day tomorrow and thank you for serving.
i have my first Kennedy 520 which had been left in the basement by the previous owners of the house. a few tools and pieces of steel were left in it (I still have them all), and i have added more of my own, but also acquired another 520 and a 526 and mid box over the years and i love them all.
I had a Kennedy tool box just like that one, it served me well, it is a well built product and was a pleasure to use. Great find, nice clean up, looks very nice, thanks for the video sir.
John, thank you for your service. Awesome find. That Starrett gauge has Mr Pete's name all over it. You know how much he loves Starrett... Good job on the clean up 👍🇺🇲👊
Man John! What a score. I need to find a poor man's flea market like that. Living in the country we don't see much stuff like that thrown out. I was happy to see you pick it up and clean it. Those old Kennedy boxes are great. My grandfather was a machinist for Ingersoll Rand from the late 1940s until 1986 when he retired and he had several old Kennedy boxes. He used to upgrade every few years as his tool selection grew and he would always bring his old boxes home and use them in his shop at home. Great find Scout!
Nice find on the toolbox. You know how you always say a quick clean-up gives you a user? Those are the things I like because you don't have to worry about getting them banged up a little or dripping oil or paint on 'em. I have some new toolboxes under my bench and only use them for storage but I've got a couple of old beaters that go with me everywhere. Thats a good un. Have a great Veterans Day and thanks for your service!
What an awesome find! I always loved Kennedy boxes. I don’t have one because they’re big bucks and never came across one for a good price. Great job cleanup.
That was a pleasant surprise to find on the curb! I'm pretty sure that one was gone trough before they had put it out there. Very happy it's not in the landfill! I like those machinist toolboxes but the door that up a lot of room. I have none of that..
Love those Kennedy boxes. You were fortunate to get the front cover too, usually missing. I have a couple of those boxes on my bench made by Beach and in green.
Wow, just an awesome find! I love machinist boxs, I have quite a few Kennedys and an old union, but I keep my grandfather’s vintage Gerstner box on my bedroom bureau to keep my watches, tie pins, cologne etc 👍🏻
As a trained hard surface flooring installer (AKA linoleum layer LOL) a cantilever Kennedy tool box was a signal that you were serious about your trade. And even though they were tough, don't leave them behind the passenger side back wheel of your 1959 Dodge panel wagon just as your coworker decides to pull the truck closer to the load door LOL Somebody was not a happy camper LOL
Oh my goodness, a Kennedy toolbox on the curb!! I have a few and pick them up when I find a deal. I had one that was pretty rusted in places. I bought a spray can of Rust Oleum hammered Brown. Pretty close match to original paint. Great job on cleanup especially on the hinges and slides.
Fantastic find! love those kennedy boxes ..been looking at the market for one in my price range for a while. My wife said tell your girlfriend she''ll be praying for her...after hearing that you have a man cold.🤣{ I told her that's not funny man colds are very serious}
Hey John, Great find. You're right the Kennedy boxes are nice. I found one in the old Bargain New for $10 back in the 70s and still have it, (I gave it to my son) and it looks as new as it was back then. Do you remember the old Bargain News? Great place to find and sell items back in the day. I made a lot of cash buying/selling auto parts in them. - Later
Wow great job on that tool box and it really brings me back into the past from my old job of almost 20 years that everyone there had the same box on their workbench and can still remember what drawers my go to tools were in 👍
I've pretty much the same Kennedy. I absolutely love it. I picked mine up at a flea market, in need of seriously cleaning. I didn't buy new felt from Kennedy. I bought a roll from Joann Fabric and cut it to size. I used to work with felt in a previous job, so I knew how to make it work.
Great score on the Kennedy toolbox Scout. Again, I think you gave it just the right amount of cleaning. You can see the quality all over it, leather handle, double panel front door, roller draw slides ect. “Rota” is the old brand of toolbox that’s sort after in Australia and I recently picked up a Rota machinist toolbox. Similar in design to your Kennedy but it has a tambour or rolling slats on the front. They look very cool. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺
Wow! great find and cleanup. Back in the late 90s and 2000s I delivered to Merck in Lansdale PA. and GlaxoSmithKline and hand delivered to all the shops. A lot of the old timers had the wooden boxes and were great to talk to. The greatest guy I knew was Fitzpatrick that work at Merck.
Many, many years ago the place where I worked paid for my Kennedy Toolbox and I reimbursed them a little each paycheck. Until recently It was in mint condition until something spilled on it and messed up a little of the crinkle paint. My favorite toolbox to this day.
Nice find! I have six of those 520s in my shop, in various stages of conditions. I’m going to use that trick on the latches, they came out great! I was surprised how useful they are for everyday tasks on my bench. Every drawer of mine are stuffed with tools that I use everyday. That Starrett Last Word indicator is also a great find.
The "Snoop" abides, txs for sharing...recently got a Honda "HRX 217" lawn mower side of road with "FREE" sign, did some carb worked then clean-up the blades, mulched my friend's yard of a ton of fig leaves and apple leaves so a real great find...
I found a carpenters Kennedy toolbox at a flea market. Paid twenty dollars for it. Great shape, I only had to polish the latches that were a little pitted.
Great video and great find. You are a lucky man. I hope you are playing the lottery. Thanks for the tip on cleaning those latches. The thin metal protector around the latches is a great idea. Have a great weekend and Happy Veterans Day Scout Crafter. Thank you for your service to our great country!
I have 3 of these old Kennedy's, though one of them is labeled Craftsman. I got them all cheap and one FREE from our local dump. It has a small dent in the back that doesn't affect it's usability at all. I really like them.
I have an old Dunlap, which is very similar to it’s “older brother” Craftsman, and craftsman machinist boxes were in turn made by Kennedy at one point. You can see the similarities in these three brands that I don’t see in other big name machinist boxes…..the single left side hinge.
Thanks for taking us along John, I can't believe that was just left out for the trash, I've always fancied acquiring a machinist's / engineer's toolbox, just waiting patiently to pick one up for the right price as they fetch silly money on ebay, even those in poor condition ! A good honest clean up to make it usable and slow down its deterioration, good stuff ! The Starrett is a good find I think !
I have my grandfather's Kennedy tool box full of his tools. He could build anything.
You are so lucky. So many people have nothing from their grandparents.
I bought a Kennedy toolbox in 1988, sold it 5-10 years ago. I still regret selling it! Was my first really quality toolbox.
The Kennedy tool box was a nice find and a wonderful restoration. A couple of items that could be useful:
Paint: Kennedy sells spray paint which costs an arm and a leg. Rustoleum has a paint that is a shade darker, but very close: Rust-Oleum Stops Rust MultiColor Autumn Brown Textured Spray Paint - Model Number 223523
Drawer Liner Material: Home Depot sells a black drawer liner that will protect tools for the person who is willing to live without the felt.
I painted my Kennedy 520 with that RO Autumn Brown a few years ago, I like it better than the original Kennedy Crinkle Brown.
I use a Kennedy box to store some of my collector quality tools. Enjoy your Veterans day John.
Everyone have a great Veterans Day. Thank you all for your sacrifice and service to keep this nation free.
Your poor mans flea market is outstanding! All I can find at my poor mans flea market is road kill, corn fields and cows. ;) Great Video!
What a save…the way those drawer and slides come out is so much easier then the typical craftsman boxes…good technique on the latch clean up too…🖖
Happy birthday to all the Marines and an early Happy Veterans day to all who served. What a great find. I have never seen stock dipped like that. makes me think it is something special. I agree those Kennedy boxes are generally a class above.
They probably paid full price for that stock from a commercial supplier. 😃👍
Happy Veterans Day. Thank you for your service. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
That Kennedy Toolbox was terrific, nice cleanup, the hardware looks great, also. So handy. Now you need more tools to put in it.
But he's not buying tools anymore 😉
A few trips to the machine shows and tool conventions will take care of that… nature abhors a vacuum 😆
Don’t encourage him.
Joseph- Thankyou and I hope you enjoy your day tomorrow as well! 😃👍

My uncles both had Kennedy carpenters tool boxes. At the end of the day they would back up to my grandparents’ barn and unload. In 1971 they decided thet could buy a second truck for the business and bought a van. After that most of their tools stayed in the van and the rack body was used for errands.
I can’t believe how good that box came out! Even the crinkle paint. Kennedy Tool boxes are great. Fantastic find and save! 👍🏼😃
Good deal Bud!! It would have been a shame if you missed that Box!! A lil' 50/50 it would be like brand new eh!!☻
Great video 👍 That Poor Man’s Flea Market is Gold 🟨! What a awesome find 👍. What a terrific idea 💡 with the sheet metal cookie 🍪 tin to protect the toolbox 🧰 from damage from the wire wheel. Box looks great.
I'd use the same carpet on all the drawers
Have a Jesus filled day everyone Greg in Michigan

Heavy too! Even empty! 😂👍
That Kennedy box is a classic. Great for small tools👍
Yes! He came up on my feed he did a Camillus folder. 😃👍

My dad was a machinist. The bottom cabinet is a Kennedy and his top chest is something else but is wooden. Great show today John. Thank You for sharing. Have a great weekend.
You are so blessed to have a father that was a machinist. I never met a machinist that wasn’t awesome to talk to. 😃👍
Thank You ! He was a awesome father. My brother is a retired machinist. I don’t know what happened to me 😂 I was a meat cutter 😂
I had 6 of them and a craftsman. One of them was brand new. They are a well made tool boxes.i sold all of them in my down sizing. I might of some hardware for them . Your box was a very nice find. Your cleanup was good to make it useable. Great find. Thank You

Machinist lots always pay off! 😃👍
Great find, great cleanup! I think those strange-looking bits are for glass/ceramic. Good thing they wax-coated the aluminum bar, now you don't have to worry about it rusting up on you...
I have no idea why the stock was covered in that stuff. 🤔. 😃👍
I love the Kennedy machinist toolboxes. I have one which looks like yours, but I think is older. I have same number/style of drawers. Dave.
Terrific find John! I have a 520 and love it. This Army veteran and son of a WWII combat veteran wishes you and all other Marines a great veterans day! Bill.
Bill, Thankyou! I hope you have a wonderful day tomorrow! 😃👍🇺🇸
Fantastic save. Incredible that someone threw that put. I’m so glad you found it and set it up for another lifetime of work.

It’s true! Sometimes doing a full restoration only makes you afraid to use it again! 🫣😂👍
The slides look more or less exactly like the ones in our old Craftsman boxes like the one we fixed up for my son.
You are an artist and a gosh darn great teacher. Happy Birthday Marine, maybe late. Veteran's Day!
What an awesome find! I always loved Kennedy boxes. I don’t have one because they’re big bucks and never came across one for a good price. Great job cleanup.
What a great find John I still have all of mine from 1973 and still use them they have served me well great quality.
Great find! It cleaned up nice. I hope you will feel better soon.
Beautiful tool boxes. THey're like rocking horse **** over here.
That was a pleasant surprise to find on the curb! I'm pretty sure that one was gone trough before they had put it out there. Very happy it's not in the landfill! I like those machinist toolboxes but the door that up a lot of room. I have none of that..
Hey John great find. The silver craftsman machinist tool chest were Kennedy.
Yes! I have that in the attic! 😃👍
Nice find on the tool box. the round bits look lie d-bits or engraving bits. The dipped stock my have been ground to size stock.
Engraving bits!!! I think you might be right! Thanks Randy!
It always amazes me that there are people that will throw away something so valuable as that Kennedy box and a dial indicator
Love those Kennedy boxes. You were fortunate to get the front cover too, usually missing. I have a couple of those boxes on my bench made by Beach and in green.
I t amazes me what people get rid of box came up great scout fantastic stuff god bless take care 🗽🇺🇸🇳🇿🪖45
You have the best stuff at the poor man’s flea market. Great tool box. 🇺🇸
Hi John. Great find on that machinist tool box. 👍👍❤...
Fantastic find! love those kennedy boxes ..been looking at the market for one in my price range for a while. My wife said tell your girlfriend she''ll be praying for her...after hearing that you have a man cold.🤣{ I told her that's not funny man colds are very serious}
George- I heard Man colds are equivalent to a woman giving birth naturally! 😂👍
Hello John, beautiful job on the toolbox 🧰.
Happy Veterans Day.
- Later
Yes- Here it was called “Buy Lines”. 😂👍
I'm a fan of the Kennedy boxes too. I've acquired four of them over the years. A couple of them are 80+ years old. Still going strong.
Happy Birthday Marine! ,,,Semper Fi
Wow great job on that tool box and it really brings me back into the past from my old job of almost 20 years that everyone there had the same box on their workbench and can still remember what drawers my go to tools were in 👍
Thank you for your service John. And thanks for showing some great cleanup tips on that tool box.
Have a great weekend, John. Hope you feel better soon.
Holy cow thats an awesome find!! It cleaned up nicely.
man you go walkin around this hood with a box like that and the popo gonna think you up to some no good lol great find love me a Kennedy $$$$$
😂
Nice find and great job on the clean-up
That should have been your Halloween video . The haunted tool box from Amityville lol 😂
Stuart- Back then things were over-built today just the opposite. 😃👍
Thank you for your service, enjoy Veterans Day!
Wow! great find and cleanup.
Great find and nicely cleaned up 🛠👍😊
Kennedy boxes are built solid. I like their construction
OMG! 6! As you well know Kennedy always made great stuff- I love there intermediate boxes the ones you can stack other boxes on top! 😃👍
The "Snoop" abides, txs for sharing...recently got a Honda "HRX 217" lawn mower side of road with "FREE" sign, did some carb worked then clean-up the blades, mulched my friend's yard of a ton of fig leaves and apple leaves so a real great find...
Treasure! Congratulations!
Wow, what a fabulous tool box, to find one like that for nothing........ would never happen in the UK. What a find!!! 👍👍🇺🇸🇬🇧✌️
You are the luckiest man alive!! God bless!!
What a great found that Box. Congratulations. Unbielevable all these things in the streets of New York.
John you are one lucky man,If I found all the stuff you find I'd get robbed on the way home and loose it.
Great find and clean up.
Hi Scout , A Great Find And Another Job Well Done 👍 . I Like Them Just No Real Use For One .
Great free pile find!
nice save on the Kennedy tool box! I have a Kennedy Saw holder tool box that I got at an auction about 10 years ago
Home run John…do a resto on that baby 👍👍👍
Thanks for taking us along John, I can't believe that was just left out for the trash, I've always fancied acquiring a machinist's / engineer's toolbox, just waiting patiently to pick one up for the right price as they fetch silly money on ebay, even those in poor condition ! A good honest clean up to make it usable and slow down its deterioration, good stuff !
The Starrett is a good find I think !
