Yep who could not make a go thing on wheels when we watched our gang on TV on Saturday...we didn't wait to find an old baby carriage in the trash if it was in someone's garage or basement it was fair game...dam those were some good days...🖖
When we were kids, we would get 7 or 8 of us, pick one kid, blind fold him, put a football helmet on him, and say go. Great video. I used to play darts with a Scottish Quantity Surveyor. He could keep dart score faster than a super computer. He never made a mistake. I think he knew the answer while the third dart was airborne. A friend gave me a ton of stainless tubing. I want to make a wagon for firewood or tools. How about an axle class? I had to throw away a rototiller. I saved everything I could, including the hair pin cotter pins. Glad I did. I have about 6 cotter pins to my name. Love your videos.
Everyone need a box of cotter pins and hose clamps. I have some of the heavy duty ones as well. I haven't removed the patina yet. You know in racing they drilled a hole in the bolt head and wired them so they couldn't back out. Of course today they have special ones to meet racing specs. I could never see the ban on lawn darts. Getting hit with one is like watching a baseball hit you in the head without moving or putting up your blove. A kid today can carry a rifle in public but not buy lawn darts. Teach safety/common sense and no problems. Not to say some kid won't try to blindside you with one but that goes for anything including rocks and green apples.
Philip- Funny story- We were kid’s playing lawn darts next door and one of the darts went up on the porch roof, the kid who lived there ran upstairs climbed out on the roof and tossed the dart down…. Right into his brother’s shoulder blade. 🫣😂👍

My Grandpa gave me a set of carriage wheels/axles and I made a buggy and pushed my sisters around with it. I gave up on Welcome Back Kotter pins and just made them out of 12 or 14 gauge wire or steel whatevers. No dough! And no scribe either. Got it close and if it was off I just used the inertia driver or a bigger hole. I made a 4 foot painted piece of plywood that hangs on the wall outside that the dart boards hangs on. I don’t know how many cotter pins I had. I know I have supplied the auto repair shop and several of my friends and I still have probably a thousand. Darts were a sport at my home when I was a kid. My grandson acquired my custom set of darts in the case. You were talking about hardware, I have at least a month invested separated nuts and bolts ,washers, thread all and springs. I have my own little hardware store when I need it. It’s so nice to pull the drawer that has what you need. My neighbors love me when they need something. Town is a 30 minute drive. Thank You

When I worked on dock levelers we used tons of cotter pins and clevis pins. Some of them were held in with clip rings. Those hairpins were called Jesus clips by the old timers. I think it had something to do with swearing while inserting or removing them. I’m watching a little late today after doin* front brakes on my car. Great show today.

I mentioned a few weeks ago finding a lot of good quality dividers with points brazed onto them and recently found out this was because the old engineers did it to give the dividers a carbide tip. Those old darts are very cool. I was thinking of converting a modern dart into a scriber because some are tungsten alloy, which is much more dense than lead.
Great vid! A great trick Grandpa used is to take a wire the same diameter as the thread depth and wrap the wire (3-5 wraps) all the way to the nut and back the nut over the wire... Just "over tighten" the nut a bit first. This is super cheap and handy on farm implements out in the field with nothing but bailing wire and a pair of pliers.
I’m Australian and we’re more English in our terms. We also call the flat sided tapered pin that has a nut on it that holds a bike pedal crank to the axle, a cotter pin.
Regarding water for the outside animals, I have a heated water bowl for them, the water never freezes, you can get a heated water bowl at tractor supply and other places, I also leave plenty of dry food in a sheltered box for them too, the cats get spayed and neutered but not the woodchucks, skunks, or possums.
ScoutCraftsr I think I could beat Reggie with hardware I have 102 two pound metal coffee cans, 85 three pound metal coffee cans, 28 12”x18” metal hardware bins, a custom wooden rolling box with 4 divided hardware drawers, 4 other drawers, divided top compartment that all contain hardware. Nuts, washers, rated bolts, concrete anchors, shackles, wire rope clips, conduit fittings, electrical connectors cotter pins, chain links, etc etc. If I could send pics I would. Not bragging just love the hardware I have collected

great vid john. brought back something I’d forgotten from growing up in bath beach Brooklyn in the ‘70’s. we would procure a supermarket wagon and cut off the wagon part and build a seat out of scrap wood. often, the older men on the block would help us. my block had a very steep hill so it made for hours upon hours of fun not condoned in todays world. 73’s. and thanks for bringing back fond memories.
The Hairpin cotter pins are often called "R clips" here in the UK because of their shape ! You obviously started young on the poor man's flea market, no pram was safe ! 😉 Of course I love the Champion darts, would be great to see you make one from scratch ! You've reminded me now that the first set of darts I had was a set of vintage lead weighted wooden darts, I wonder what happened to them ??
By code, all elevator cable hitch points must be double nutted and cotter-pinned. We use them all the time in the industry for all sorts of retaining needs. Never reuse a cotter-pin, it’s fine the first few times you do, then you find yourself with a bloody hand trying to remove the mangled mess the third time.
John! I'm late on your videos this week and I have a question about Monday's where you talked about feeler and spark plug gauge accuracy. I have a 2016 Honda Accord V6. Everyone says don't gap the plugs when you buy new ones because they're pre-gapped. Because I'm a nerd, I bought them directly from NGK. What I SHOULD have done was listen to everyone, installed them, and never looked back. But I'm me. I bought a set of Gear Wrench feeler gauges to verify and the gaps aren't coming up to spec! So now I'm wondering if the feeler gauges are off. Do I now use my calipers to measure the feeler gauges? I mean, couldn't the CALIPERS be off? When does it end?!?!? haha. I even think the NGK BOX says don't gap them. What would you do because I'm about to sell the POS. Have a great weekend!
Brian- It’s funny, Over the summer I put new plugs in my truck and only eyeballed the gap! 😂. Years ago weak coils and point gap meant more ignition issues. Today’s engines and spark plugs are much more efficient. Every plug I’ve used over the last decade had good gaps right out of the box. Never had to adjust one. 😃👍

China has an extremely automated manufacturing system where they run machines 24/7 and require little finishing work. Still it’s baffling how they can produce things for such low cost.

Cotter pins come in many different flavors. Yesterday I put gears on magnetos for an aircraft. It came with 2 that I didn't like. I put better ones in the gears, timed the magnetos, and I feel better knowing my cotter pins are in that. I may have to test fly it.

I have hardware organizers all over my shop, nuts, bolts, screws, etc. Every time I need one I still end up going to the hardware store. As for the levels, I keep round bubble level in the kitchen junk drawer. Ever make brownies in an unleveled oven? Thin at one end and too thick at the other? Leveling up the oven from time to time is a must in my creaky, settling 1916 house.
Thats not a bad deal for the scribe tips and rule! I had a dart set exactly like those when I was a kid. There were six of them and a board I got from my grandfather. I cant imagine what ever happened to it all.
Great video Scout, here in Australia they’re called split pins. You know those tapered pins that were used to hold bicycle cranks in place? That’s what we called cotter pins. I don’t think they were invented by Mr “Cottair” as John Travolta called him😂. I had a friend in the bus workshop used to make scribers from old diesel engine injectors. He’d drill a hole in the end of a bolt and braze the injector into the hole. Not as hard as carbide but still held a good tip. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺

We also found a wrecking ball that fell off a trailer - I actually tripped over it while running through the tall grass next to the road. I'm guessing it weighed over 400 pounds. It was gone the next time we looked for it.
Years ago I played Dartball. So the darts were thrown underhand at a 4x4 plywood target painted in a baseball field. Those darts are wooden pretty large. Great fun !
Oh, John...Cotter Pins, Split Pins? As a lad (1970's) we just called them bent nails; why? Because that's what we used on those go-cart pram wheels, a simple nail bent to about 90* did the job. And the back axle often stayed one piece - for the front though, we often cut it in the middle so the front board was wide enough for your feet and the turning circle. And those axles were held on by nails, sunk halfway in and then tapped over to grip the steel rod in place. Band-aid was our friend back then!! lol

Cotter pins are used in aviation for all of fasters with castle nuts, also lock wires, they are set as specific so you don't get hung up, I bilt up a short hammer just for that purpose, Eck usmc

I think the unwritten rule is, no matter whether it’s screwdrivers or cotter pins, you always need one more than you have.

The same happened to us.Except in our case we ran into a closed garage door.It stopped me pretty fast.I added brakes right after that.

I also cut my own hair since covid 19 started. Wahl Clippers are the best investment I have made in years.

great vid john. brought back something I’d forgotten from growing up in bath beach Brooklyn in the ‘70’s. we would procure a supermarket wagon and cut off the wagon part and build a seat out of scrap wood. often, the older men on the block would help us. my block had a very steep hill so it made for hours upon hours of fun not condoned in todays world. 73’s. and thanks for bringing back fond memories.
The Hairpin cotter pins are often called "R clips" here in the UK because of their shape !

Of course I love the Champion darts, would be great to see you make one from scratch ! You've reminded me now that the first set of darts I had was a set of vintage lead weighted wooden darts, I wonder what happened to them ??

By code, all elevator cable hitch points must be double nutted and cotter-pinned. We use them all the time in the industry for all sorts of retaining needs. Never reuse a cotter-pin, it’s fine the first few times you do, then you find yourself with a bloody hand trying to remove the mangled mess the third time.
John! I'm late on your videos this week and I have a question about Monday's where you talked about feeler and spark plug gauge accuracy. I have a 2016 Honda Accord V6. Everyone says don't gap the plugs when you buy new ones because they're pre-gapped. Because I'm a nerd, I bought them directly from NGK. What I SHOULD have done was listen to everyone, installed them, and never looked back. But I'm me. I bought a set of Gear Wrench feeler gauges to verify and the gaps aren't coming up to spec! So now I'm wondering if the feeler gauges are off. Do I now use my calipers to measure the feeler gauges? I mean, couldn't the CALIPERS be off? When does it end?!?!? haha. I even think the NGK BOX says don't gap them. What would you do because I'm about to sell the POS. Have a great weekend!
Brian- It’s funny, Over the summer I put new plugs in my truck and only eyeballed the gap! 😂. Years ago weak coils and point gap meant more ignition issues. Today’s engines and spark plugs are much more efficient. Every plug I’ve used over the last decade had good gaps right out of the box. Never had to adjust one. 😃👍

So that is why Harvey's Industrial Supply is always out of cotter pins. I swear, if I go to Harvey's and they tell me they're out of 1/4-20 fasteners, you better be out of the country, Scout. PS- It's been so long since I dropped my carbide scribe nose first on a concrete floor ( about the only way to damage one ), I forgot how great they are. Unless you have started collecting them, I''m getting a new one ASAP!

That is a useful tool to have in your toolbox 🧰. That was also a great deal you got on the 2 scribes and extra tips for them ,$9 bucks , you can’t beat that! Those Champion darts 🎯 are right on target , pretty cool. I’m used to the plastic style darts, again these are pretty cool to see👍. I also like the vintage box that they came in, the image and lettering are awesome! The turkey 🦃 feathers 🪶 for the darts 🎯 flights is interesting to see. It reminds me of what the Native Americans would use for there arrows. I think the feathers 🪶 for the arrows were called fletchings . Why is it when I hear about ridiculously cheap stuff, I get the feeling that it must be made by slave labor???
China has an extremely automated manufacturing system where they run machines 24/7 and require little finishing work. Still it’s baffling how they can produce things for such low cost.

This was a great Mosh! I have seen cotter pins used on a lot of the manual and CNC jobs I ran over the years. The darts were very interesting too and I never did learn how to score on a dart board either. Thanks for sharing this.
Cotter pins come in many different flavors. Yesterday I put gears on magnetos for an aircraft. It came with 2 that I didn't like. I put better ones in the gears, timed the magnetos, and I feel better knowing my cotter pins are in that. I may have to test fly it.

I have hardware organizers all over my shop, nuts, bolts, screws, etc. Every time I need one I still end up going to the hardware store. As for the levels, I keep round bubble level in the kitchen junk drawer. Ever make brownies in an unleveled oven? Thin at one end and too thick at the other? Leveling up the oven from time to time is a must in my creaky, settling 1916 house.

Thats not a bad deal for the scribe tips and rule! I had a dart set exactly like those when I was a kid. There were six of them and a board I got from my grandfather. I cant imagine what ever happened to it all.
Great video Scout, here in Australia they’re called split pins. You know those tapered pins that were used to hold bicycle cranks in place? That’s what we called cotter pins. I don’t think they were invented by Mr “Cottair” as John Travolta called him😂. I had a friend in the bus workshop used to make scribers from old diesel engine injectors. He’d drill a hole in the end of a bolt and braze the injector into the hole. Not as hard as carbide but still held a good tip. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺

Years back I found a cotter pin that was over a half inch in diameter and about 10 inches long. I wish I knew were it went
Believe it or not large cotter pins are pretty common! Used in lots of large industrial machines. 😃👍
@@ScoutCrafter yes, I believe this one came from a piece of heavy equipment that was being hauled down the road. We also found a wrecking ball that fell off a trailer - I actually tripped over it while running through the tall grass next to the road. I'm guessing it weighed over 400 pounds. It was gone the next time we looked for it.
Years ago I played Dartball. So the darts were thrown underhand at a 4x4 plywood target painted in a baseball field. Those darts are wooden pretty large. Great fun !

Oh, John...Cotter Pins, Split Pins? As a lad (1970's) we just called them bent nails; why? Because that's what we used on those go-cart pram wheels, a simple nail bent to about 90* did the job. And the back axle often stayed one piece - for the front though, we often cut it in the middle so the front board was wide enough for your feet and the turning circle. And those axles were held on by nails, sunk halfway in and then tapped over to grip the steel rod in place. Band-aid was our friend back then!! lol

Cotter pins are used in aviation for all of fasters with castle nuts, also lock wires, they are set as specific so you don't get hung up, I bilt up a short hammer just for that purpose, Eck usmc
My gosh… I remember my dad making four wheels for my go-cart out of wood on his brand new shop smith. I think he used it as an excuse to my mom so he could purchase the jigsaw attachment. 🧐😂🤣

Hello Steve- usually Klein had 3 letters on the inside handles that signifies quarter, month and year. The real early ones just had month/year.
