    I was born in '80. I bought the Axis bold as love album from a Library used sale for $1 when I was around 11. I bought it because the cover was so strangly uniuqe, I had never heard of Hendrix before. I came from a Beatles household. I played it and by the time I finished Little Wing my mind was blown and my ears were turned on. Your excitement reminded me of the feeling of telling my friends about it and them having no clue.

    Michael, Im a recent subscriber to your channel. You, my friend, are a true Renaissance Man. When everything started down the digitized path, I still held on to my records and my old HH Scott 30 watt power amp and mix of old Lancing speakers. The great recordings were produced on analog/tube equipment. Why would you listen to music on solid-state when you can hear it the way it was recorded. You can hear the decade of the guitar through the effects and then the tube amplifiers. It doesnt get any better than that. Its all about the tubes man. To this day I listen only through tubes albeit the car radio. Keep the faith and keep on trucking.

    I too saw Hendrix at the Singer Bowl and at Woodstock. I also saw at various Singer Bowl concerts The Doors, The Chamber Brothers, Janis Joplin and Big Brother and The Holding Company. There were other great bands but I don't remember which ones. Great times for cheap ticket prices. As always I appreciate Michael's information and humor.

    After watching this video I pulled out my reissue copy of Bold as Love, that my son gave me a few years ago and listened to it for the first time, I wish I could say I liked it but it just didn't do it for me. The first album I ever bought was Are You Experienced. That one I liked and played it a lot. Dad did not like it . 1960 something. I really enjoy your videos by the way. Great stuff!!!

    Hi Michael: I have the analog productions “Amused to Death” by Roger Waters from a couple of years ago... is it worth it to upgrade to the forthcoming box that is getting the UHQR treatment... if I’m playing it on a lowly Rega RP6 with an Ortofon 2M Bronze cartridge... if the price of the box isn’t an issue, is it worth the upgrade?

    “To a dermatologist” Huh? I’ve got a 2nd state butcher cover and would love to have the sticker/cover up removed to have a pseudo 1st state copy.
    Great vid as usual, Michael. Thanks so very much for the deatailed description and funny as hell antics! I’m awaiting my UHQR stereo pressing. Can’t wait!

    • @NickP333
      @NickP333 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Malachi! Hope all is going well in the land of HiFi, or should I say rabbit hole. Very deep and never ending rabbit hole. At least you’ve got Michael as a your friend and mentor.
      Anyway, no it’s definitely not a 3rd state. It is a true unpeeled 2nd state stereo copy with the tell tale signs such as an almost upside down blackish triangle, which is Ringo’s T-shirt. I used to own a 1st state so I’m familiar with the covers.
      I know there’s a few companies (or just people) who charge a considerable amount to remove the pasted over trunk cover of the 2nd state copies. I’ve also been offered a good amount of $ for it as it is now, which I may accept so I can buy more records!
      Loved the making of the potstickers, btw. 🙂
      Have a great night, dude!
      - Nick

    Great story about seeing Jimi at the Singer Bowl… such a crazy idea having the stage on a dolly! I have to disagree with you about the U.K. pressing of Are You Experienced sounding ‘dead’… my copy of the album is a first pressing & it’s my go to record when trying out any new hifi setup I get as it is SO good! Agree with you re the sleeve though, the US cover is way better! The other benefit of the U.K. issue is the incredible version of Red House it contains… worth the price of the album alone! :-)

  • @mariosupa4027

    Hello Mike how are you? I have recently returned to vinyl and understand you to be the authority on all things vinyl. Can you tell me why I get a ticking sound from my vinyl records even when the volume is set to zero ? This happens on my surviving albums of my youth not on my recently purchased ones. I jumped ship from vinyl back around 1987 or so for these reasons exactly when cds & players came about. I've invested in a manual Record Spin washer to no avail, should the ticking noise be coming from years of dirt build up. I have to admit that a quality non ticking vinyl record is a very pleasing experience much more so than digital though a lot more work. I have a modest analog setup consisting of a Pro-ject Debut Espirit DB TT upgraded with Ortofon 2M Bronze Cartridge and a Tube Box S phono preamp with NOS Mullard Russian made tubes. I hope you can help me out. Thank you in advance.

    Is there a reason that AP didn't go with 45rpm? I think the MoFi Marvin Gaye is the high water mark for vinyl so far.....................some 33rpm records get close, but the 45s win in the end I believe.

    • @AnalogPlanet
      @AnalogPlanet  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some people agree but if you read my review, many complain about how they had to break up a song to make it fit....so difficult to please everyone but I agree that the Marvin Gaye is among the most shockingly better reissues compared to OP or even Mo-Fi's from 10 years ago...

    • @UberPilot
      @UberPilot 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AnalogPlanet I agree. The Marvin Gaye is as good as anything they have ever done. There are a few from back in the day that can hold there own with the new stuff (The original MoFi Surfer Girl compares favorably with the AP 45). Listen to the Marvin Gaye again. The vinyl is a quite as the old stuff. It might be better. I solved the transition thing, and the getting up thing, by buying an NOS Nakamichi DRAGON. What shocked me a bit was, for the first time, the DRAGON had a hard time capturing everything on the record.

    Dear michael I would like to start collecting records I think I’m going to buy the pro-ject essential 3 amp and speakers are thing that I already have but I looked around on the internet and people say that you need a pre amp I am not really sure what that is or if it is really necessary if it is I might just buy the essential 3 with the built in pre amp do you have any tips or things to say about this?

    • @AnalogPlanet
      @AnalogPlanet  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your integrated amplifier or receiver (I assume) doesn't have a phono input you need a phono preamplifier to boost the low cartridge output and to apply the RIAA equalization needed to flatten frequency response. If you don't have a phono preamp built in already you can get one "outboard" or built into the turntable like the essential 3. Of course having a separate phono preamp gives you greater upgrade flexibility and usually better sound but also greater expense. Pro-Ject's built in electronics are pretty good though.

    Great stuff made by a lover of records for those who are in love with music and records. This reminds me though of the time that I passed on a mono original of the first 13th Floor Elevators album. It was on the wall of a record store for 96 bucks. Every time I went back to look at it it was in worse condition than before because so many people had asked to see it. I was careful with it. I could kick myself for not grabbing it right away the first time I saw it. So how does Mr. Fremer's records not get damaged when he kind of drops them when done holding them? And yet they are all in such good shape? Ha ha ha.....well good stuff Mr. Fremer and thanks.

    An unboxing video... seems like the appropriate place to ask... I recently ordered a couple of double albums from the US which were air-freighted to me in the Southern hemisphere. I don't want to mention the name of the record or where I bought them because the vendor is going to great lengths to rectify the problem I have encountered, but it is a website that is dedicated to supplying merchandise for a single group. The records had a noticeable amount of debris that appeared to be paper fibres. Some of them were sticky and could not be completely brushed off. One record which I persisted to remove the debris, left something in the grooves that caused severe pops. On at least one record there is a straight line of residue near the edge that passed through the lead in and slightly into the first track. some paper fibres had attached to the residue line. Have you struck this? do you know the cause? Thoroughly enjoyed the video, although a mohel would have knocked it out in 10 minutes tops.

      Sounds like warm records prematurely placed in paper sleeves but difficult to diagnose from here. Pressing plants are not “clean rooms”!

    36:35, I totally agree! People say, "well if the records digitally sourced, I might as well buy the CD!" No! Once you put that digital file on a record, it breathes life into it somehow! I use to do that with very high quality type 2 cassettes, I'd record tracks from my CD'S to it, and it actually gained a three dimensionality to it that wasn't there before!

    I just learned about the "perpendicularity of the stylus/cantilever" from this video. It even makes sense. Thanks for that!

    Mike.. your thoughts on 'Innovative Audio' in NYC.. reputable?

      Disclaimer: I went to high school with the owner! However, I’ve had no retail interaction so I can’t say but they’ve been there for decades and have survived in a very difficult retail environment so I’d say yes reputable but not based on first hand!

      I had a pretty sad encounter with INNOVATIVE AUDIO in NYC.. after calling the owner (Elliot Fishkin) and explained my need for a new stylus with a 'in home' setup of my turn table he told me he could do it and he would get back to me...after 5 days of no return call I contacted Elliot and he still had not talked to his 'tech' for getting the correct stylus for my pre amp.. BUT he did have suggestions on how I could spend $20K on a new Table (all set up and ready to be delivered immediately).. I said I would wait for him to 'talk' to his Tech. for the new stylus ... I waited.. I waited.. I waited..
      So much for INNOVATIVE AUDIO in NYC!

    I saw Hendrix on that same tour in Columbus, Ohio, except without Janis. Also saw him at Woodstock too. I think all those copies are sold out at this point. Oh by the way those cards are copied from the Topps 1959 baseball cards. Thanks for posting

    You need a French Barclay to hear good sounding mono of the UK-EU 'Are You Experienced'.
    Well worth the hunt!
    As for the Blue Note box, the 'Africaine' album on TH-cam has less than 1000 "views" so if the set sells out that's another 1500 people who may choose to listen to it (if they don't keep it sealed).
    And the Hutcherson is a really mellow, almost mathematical record. It needs to be super hi-fi to give it some bite (it sounds rather dull as a digital release)

    32:28 Top notch rant. Oh yeah, you should definitely watch out for those toxic goiters. I almost got one the other day when I was told I was letting my vinyl nostalgia cloud my judgement after remarking that I generally prefer analog to digital. But truth be told, *in the hands of most people, digital sounds better than vinyl.* With CDs and streaming, you just buy something that sounds decent, hook it up, and you away you go. Vinyl requires understanding and patience. You can't just buy any cartridge, slap it into your tonearm, and get great sound. *However,* if you familiarize yourself with the technology, learn that Stevenson and Lofgren aren't only a poet and a member of the E Street band, you will be rewarded with an audio experience that all music fans stay awake at night hoping to achieve with their systems.

    My understanding is that the BBC wouldn’t air the song Lola with the original Coca-Cola lyric so Ray Davies had to fly from New York to London to re-record that one line that would make it acceptable for airplay.

      Nothing weird about it, that was a bona fide 1967 release. It would have the UK cover as the Australian record industry was governed by the UK. Everything that Australia had was sent from UK.
