  • This 1962 Austin Healey Sprite showed up in boxes with all the body work done. It's going back together in hurry! We marry the engine and transmission, install it, get the carpet in, even do a little frame work. A lot is happening fast, we're gonna need quite a few parts to keep up the pace.

    Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Goldwing, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make TH-cam videos.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?

Facebook: WatchJRGo (or JRGo, FB hates my branding)
Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

I love the Austin Healey Sprite. I had one once. It was a 1959. I beat a stingray in a race with my little bug eyed sprite. I chose the road. It was a switchback dirt road a little over a mile long going to stop at Mountainside and then down. The longest straight away there’s about a quarter mile at the most. All hairpin turns. The sprite ate it up. Easy drifting at the hairpin turns. The stingray with all that power cannot do it. It was never able to drift around the corners safely. I know the road and my little sprite and what I can do. Never had to really break, except for Drifting. It was so much fun. Of course at the end of the race the stingray passed me like I was standing still. But I won. It is a road race dream car.

This project reminds me of my buddies Sunbird Turbo project. He decided to take the engine apart all by himself and throw all the hardware in one box unsorted. Left the state for a couple years with the car in my garage all part. Called me up one day, sent me his credit card and asked me to put it all back together. I spent hours organizing all the bolts and parts before I could begin reassembly. Thanks Mike!

Love the A series engine. I could take the engine out in less than 1 hour, with only basic tools. First time I did this, we didn't even have an engine stand or hoist. Two of us lifted the engine out "the hard way" with brute force. Not too hard at all.

Sprites hit things all the time when the shockers wear, cheap BMC parts bin frontend. The shockers are actually used as suspension points, nuts! Panel fit is often a nightmare after accidents. Shelby used Sprites in his racing school as they simulate the real thing, at very low speed and were very cheap to replace. The narrow track and wheelbase limits what you can ever really do modifying. Motor needs to come out to iron out those chassis rails. The rails are angled up slightly towards the front of the car then go flat further back. You will upset the caster angle if they don't match. These leak from the rear main scroll seal (no proper oil seal in these) the oil will go all over that carpet in no time flat... stops the rust in that bit. Rewarding to drive if you don't expect amazing things to happen. Keep at it.

I stripped and rebuilt a 1965 Sprite in 1976. It needed new sills, floor patches and new wings. I stripped the engine and had a rebore and crank grind. The A series engine is quite simple and easy to install in a Sprite. I had already done this on a couple of Minis which were a bit more of a problem. I replaced the gearbox with a second hand one. With new shocks all round and front wishbones it handled quite well. I did add a servo to improve the brakes. I resprayed it sapphire blue and with a red soft top it looked great. Can you tell me why I ever sold it? Please keep the SU carbs, they are not that difficult to service and balance.

  • @Metalcop5150
    @Metalcop5150 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Believe it or not I have actually used a forklift to bend metal frames and make repairs!! That being said "You guys are doing it WRONG!!" lol Seriously though, when the operator used the weight of the fork carriage to bend that frame leg, it probably worked just OK, because there is no hydraulic power behind it. You can even see the lift chain going slack, as there is no power behind it! When lowering etc. you are just releasing the hydraulic pressure and gravity is taking over. To properly use the forklift, you put the tip of the fork on what you need to bend and then use the forward tilt, which is then using hydraulic pressure to move your target.

The bent up front frame rails are normal. The front end alignment relies on that bend. If you straighten it, you'll never get the front end aligned correctly again. All alignment except toe in is fixed on this car and the bent up front frame rails are designed that way. You guys screwed the pooch on this one.
