I've been working on the helpdesk for 5 months now, and I agree that this job definitely becomes repetitive. You start to notice the same people calling every day with simple issues, and it just becomes boring. Password resets, slow computer, slow internet, printer issues, boot loop, LITERALLY 90% of helpdesk is these issues. I feel like it's 70% customer service and 30% technical because you start to get more common and same issues that are really simple to fix, and hardly any exposure to more technical and IT-focused issues.
I'm currently studying for my CCNA, and I'm really working hard on my escape from the helpdesk, you just start to become complacent and relaxed in that sort of role. Not to mention, your colleagues mostly do not have any ambitions to move up, but I use that as a motivating factor to keep increasing my skills. Hopefully, I'm going to work up towards a network engineer role in the next couple of months.

Have you moved up to Network Engineer yet and if so, was CCNA the only requirement to get from help desk to Network Engineer?

Love your videos and personality bro. I know you havent made a vid in a while but I hope you get back to it if that is your passion. Seeing your journey evolve from IT to development to whatever may come next has been inspiring for someone in a similar position and age as myself. Its great to see someone who loves to constantly learn, grow, and change. Keep doing you!

I am in a Helpdesk position and have been here for 3 years. Everyday is a learning experience but trying to further my education so I can become a field support technician.

I've been in ICT for over 30 years now - after a few years you get completely used to it, I always try and see it from their side - we're all human beings at the end of day and feel emotions.

Worked in a IT call center for several years, never again. I've been thinking about leaving the IT field because of this job.

Lol. Your reflections are so spot on lol. Back at my helpdesk job we had infamous characters or callers too. Ones that we knew would break the shit out of new hires. Skip and Jane. Lol. Skip was an old scary grumpy guy who always had the same problem printing or editing a word document that he believes Russians have hacked. But the support for this guy was in-person at campus labs, so the spaz was in person and very rude lol. But since I've had much success helping him I think he was softer on me than others, either that or I just internalized his insults better haha. Crazy story one time this guy passed out in the middle of summer heat in the library and I had to call emergency for him. He was bloodied because he hit his head on the way down. And Jane (like you said one if those lonely people) always calls in about her password or her HP printer, every day, and she yells! Haha.
You're right about not wanting to be too personalble and end up being the preferred punching bag for certain users. Also about developing your own personal KB. That was an idea that was shared with me when I first started and something that I always advise new hires. It reinforces what you'll be doing and helps you navigate that info quicker because you made it.

on a helpdesk job, what are some performance expectations your boss might have for you? are you supposed to meet a quota of number of tickets resolved per hour for example?
